It is one that takes patience, time, and true talent. Julia,a woman from Chicago, is the definition of a talented tailor.Julia’s inspiration for her designs comes from her grandma’s sketches (草图) from the 1940s. Julia’s grandma went to fashion school in her late teens and dropped out but she kept many of her sketches. Grandma showed Julia the designs she made back in fashion school, and Julia’s mind was blown. When Grandma expressed her regret for not having the opportunity to see her sketches come to life, Julia decided not to have Grandma wait to witness it.After sewing her grandma’s designs, Julia has been posting the final products on social media one by one, which has made popular. One of the most excellent designs she made was a beautiful gold cocktail dress, which took Julia about two months to finish.Julia taught herself how to sew and has no professional training. Every month or so Julia continues to make her grandma’s designs a reality. Julia says,“She was very happy. I think she loves getting to connect with me and have something to do because she’s at a stage in life where, you know, many people don’t have many things to do. I think she is really proud and excited that I have completed it.”From the social media, Julia has even gotten offers from people willing to buy her dresses, Julia is very pleased, but she claims since she isn’t an expert, she doesn’t feel comfortable selling them. However, seeing Julia teach herself how to sew with social media videos and design these dresses is giving her viewers the confidence to attempt something oftheir own!4.How did Julia like Grandma’s sketches?A.She was excited about themB.She thought they were out of fashion.C.She felt regretful for their poor preservationD.She thought they were inspirational to other designers.5.Why did Julia do sewing?A.To prove her talent.B.To test her patience.C.To attract people’s attention.D.To help realize Grandma’s wish.6.How did Julia learn sewing?A.She consulted professionals.B.She attended a fashion school.C.She learned from social media videos.D.She followed Grandma’s instructions7.What is the viewers’ attitude towards Julia’s posts on social media?A.Doubtful.B.Admiring.C.Indifferent.D.Grateful.Anyone can be late a handful of times, but to be the person who is always late ―that’s an art, a frustrating art. Or, a side effect of your personality traits, scientists have found. So what is it that causes some people to constantly miss trains, make it to the wedding just after the bride’s shown up and regularly annoy their friends? And why is it so hard for us to fix it? “There are all sorts of punishments for being late, and the paradox is that we are late even when those punishments and consequences exist.” said Justin Kruger, a social psychologist at New York University. One of the commonest reasons why people are frequently late is that they fail to accurately judge how long a task will take―something known as the planning fallacy(谬误). Research has shown that people on average underestimate the time to complete a task by a significant 40 percent.Another trait is that forever-late-comers are more likely to be multitaskers. In a 2003 study run by Jeff Conte from San Diego State University found that out of 181 subwayoperators in New York City, those who preferred multitasking were more often late for their job. This is because multitasking makes it harder to have the awareness of what you’re doing. Conte also discovered there is a personality type that’s more likely to be late. While highly strung(紧张不安), achievement-oriented Type A individuals are more possible to be punctual. Type B individuals, however, who are more laid-back(漫不经心), have a higher chance to be late.Admittedly, knowing all of this doesn’t necessarily help fix the problem. But scientists are starting to work on strategies that can slowly improve our punctuality. For people who constantly underestimate tasks, breaking down an activity into detailed steps can help people estimate how long something will take more accurately. As for your personality type, unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do to change that. But accepting that you need to struggle for it may just help. Acceptance, after all, is the first step to change.8.What does the underlined word “paradox” mean in paragraph 2?A.Strategy.B.Argument.C.Solution.D.Puzzle. 9.What is a possible feature of forever-late-comers?A.They plan to spend more time on a task.B.They tackle more than one task at a time.C.They suffer from concentration difficulties.D.They have high expectations for achievements.10.Which advice can be given to people who are always late?A.Learn to accept who you are.B.Change your personality type.C.Divide a task into smaller ones.D.Keep to the timetable accurately. 11.What is the main idea of the text?A.Time management contributes to success.B.Late comers should be severely punished.C.One’s always being late is linked to personality.D.Changing personality helps improve punctuality.Every 40 days a language dies. This “catastrophic” loss is being intensified by the climate crisis, according to linguists. If nothing is done, conservative estimates suggest half of all the 7000 languages currently spoken will be extinct by the end of the century.Speakers of minority languages have experienced a long history of persecution (迫害),with the result that by the 1920s half of all indigenous (土著的) languages in Australia, the US, South Africa and Argentina were extinct. The climate crisis is now considered the “final nail in the coffin” for many indigenous languages and the knowledge they represent.“Languages are already endangered,” says Anastasia Richl, director of the Strathy language unit at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Huge factors are globalization and migration, as communities move to regions where their language is not spoken or valued, according to Richl. “It seems particularly cruel, ” she says, “ that most of the world’s languages are in parts of the world that are growing unpleasant to people. ” Vanuatu, a South Pacific island nation measuring 12, 189 km2, has 110 languages, the highest density (密度) of languages on the planet. It is also one of the countries most at risk of sea level rise. “Many small language communities are on islands and coastlines easily subject to hurricanes and sea level rise,” she says. Others live on lands where rising temperature threatens traditional farming and fishing practices, leading to migration. In response to the crisis, the UN launched the International Decade of Indigenous Languages in 2022. Promoting and conserving languages of indigenous communities is “ not only important for them, but for all humanity, ” said Csaba Korosi, the UN general assembly president, urging countries to allow access to education in indigenous languages.12.What does the underlined phrase “final nail in the coffin” in paragraph 2 mean?A.The last straw.B.The last challenge.C.The last possibility.D.The last opportunity.13.Why is Vanuatu mentioned in paragraph 3?A.To explain the main reason for language density.B.To show the common features of endangered languages.C.To stress the impact of geographical position on migration.D.To illustrate the situation of minority language communities.14.What does the International Decade of Indigenous Languages aim to do?A.Support migrants to access local education.B.Discourage people from massive migration.C.Improve the living conditions of minority groups.D.Preserve the languages of indigenous communities.15.Which of the following is the best title for the text?A.Faced with Disasters: Communities Have to LeaveB.Lost for Words: Climate Crisis Brings Threat of CatastropheC.Upset at Extinction: UN Urges International CooperationD.Involved in Action: Experts Seek Solutions to Climate Crisis二、七选五Feeling upset is a normal part of life. Something stressful may occur everywhere, andare some useful ways to keep our cool when we feel frustrated.17Conflicts with others can be difficult to deal with. Sometimes we need to leave from the unpleasant condition. It is OK to say, “I’m going to take a break” and go for a walk or find a quiet place to sit and cool off. The goal is to give yourself some space to calm down and consider what to do next.Do breathing exercises to relaxWhen we’re upset, our nervous system will speed up our heart rate and muscles tense. It prepares the body as if to meet an attack. 18 If possible, find a safe place, sit comfortably and focus on your breath, breathing deeply and evenly. Mindful breathing helps us calm our feelings.Lift your mood with laughterLaughter relieves the tension we feel when depressed. We can think of a joke or watch a video that always makes us roar with laughter. Afterward, you may be able to lift the fog of frustration. Make sure what you use is not mean-spirited, though. 19Change your languageOnce things appear disappointing, many of us might punish ourselves with unkind words. In fact, it doesn’t have to be this way. 20 For example, instead of saying “I always mess things up,” we could say, “I made a mistake, but I’ll do it better next time.”A.Keep yourself away from the noiseB.Remove yourself from the situationC.We should turn negative thoughts into positive statements.D.Those kinds of humor can actually make us feel more down.E.Thus, we can be physically and mentally entertained from that.F.You can soften such physical reaction by using practical techniques.G.However, we can decide how we behave and react to the troubles we face.三、完形填空Devi had never been to a swimming lesson in her life. I thought I might be able to play with the local kids. When we arrived at the village of Ntette, I threw out my ball and soon, 50 kids were playing .Many of these kids had never had the chance to enjoy playing soccer with a real bal l. For me, it’s no big deal to play soccer with a real ball. I do it all the time. I’ve discovered that many kids in poor countries want to play soccer, but they can’t because they don’t have a ball. I have several soccer balls in my house. I thought that these kids would enjoy this soccer ball far more than me. So, I gave my ball to them.As we prepared to leave, one of the boys brought the soccer ball back to me. I said to him, “No, this is yours. I gave it to you.” He laughed and cheered! I loved seeing that they had a real ball to play with.Every kid who loves the game of soccer deserves(值得) to play. Every kid who lo ves the game of soccer deserves his or her own ball. A lot of recent research suggests that we should pay attention to our body clock. It can tell u s what time of day we can perform (表现) best at.Many people work best later in the morning. This is because the body’s temperature takes time to rise through the day. Taking a warm shower when you wake up can help your body’s temperature rise quickly. But everyone’s body clock is different and some are special. Morning people will ge t up early and work better early in the day. Evening people will work later but work better towards the end of the day.Research shows that we’re better at some activities at certain times of the day. Physical performance (体能)is at its best between 3 pm a nd 6 pm, so it’s better to exercise later in the day.Between noon and 4 pm, people begin to pay less attention. This is because we think less quickly after a big meal. Research also shows we become sleepy around 2 pm. This is why people in Spain take a short sleep in early afternoon. Finally, it is best to eat when we’re active. This allows our body to burn calories (卡路里) better and stops our blood sugar level s (血糖)from getting too high.29. ________ can tell us what time of day we can perform best at.A. Morning peopleB. As time went on,other Chinese people came to this area and Lime house began to be known as “Chinatown”.At the start of the 20th century, there were just 545 Chinese people in Britain. However, this situation changed greatly after the Second World War. At this time, many farmers in Hong Kong lost their jobs, and decided to move to London. In the 1950s,a small Chinese restaurant opened in central London. Many British people visited it and said that Chinese food was wonderful. Suddenly,Chinese restaurants started opening in every part of the city. Instead of too little work, the new Chinese immigrants(移民) now found that they had too much. Many asked their friends and relatives to join them from their hometowns, and a lot of families were reunited again at this time.As time went by,London’s Chinese community became more and more successful. The sons and daughters of the first restaurant workers, encouraged by their parents, studied very hard at school and university. And most got highlypaid jobs. Now, around 300,000 coffee farmers in Brazil produce about 40% of the world’s coffee. Arabica (阿拉比卡咖啡) takes up 70% of thecoffee beans grown in the country. In Brazil, 3% of export income is from coffee beans. Brazilians are wild about drinking their coffee and consume it all day long. VietnamCoffee found its way to Vietnam in the 1800s. Now coffee industry employs almost 3 million people. Most of Vietnam’s coffee production is the less appreciated Robusta (罗布斯塔咖啡) variety. Because of that, most coffee beans grown in Vietnam are for instant coffee. Despite coffee’s popularity as an export crop, the Vietnamese still prefer tea. They also make a famous Cappuccino (卡布奇诺咖啡) not found elsewhere—famous because it gets a dose of raw egg if that’s to your liking. ColombiaCoffee was introduced into Colombia in the early 1700s. In Colombia, about 2.3 million acres of land are planted with coffee. Coffee is the most important agricultural export. There are around 555,000 coffee growers in Colombia. The majority of Colombian coffee plantations are owned by families. Colombians typically start their morning with a tinto. It’s a small cup of black coffee that’s sweetened with sugar. They may add cinnamon or other spices to jazz it up. Indonesia Indonesia has a long coffee history that goes back to the 1600s, which has its share of ups and downs. In the late 19th century, the terrible coffee rust disease caused death to many of the high-quality coffee plants. To prevent this from happening again, Indonesia replanted with the disease-resistant Robusta coffee. Arabica beans still play a part in the Indonesian coffee market, representing about 25% of coffee beans grown there.21.Which of the four countries started growing coffee earliest?A.Brazil.B.Vietnam.C.Colombia.D.Indonesia. 22.What is special about Vietnam?A.A unique kind of coffee drink is made there.B.High-quality coffee beans are produced there.C.Coffee was produced for the home market there.D.Coffee planting met with problems in the 1990s there.23.What do Brazil and Colombia have in common?A.Coffee exports are growing in both countries.B.They both have a coffee-loving population.C.They share the same number of coffee growers.D.Coffee farms are owned by families in both countries.81-year-old Harry Smith of Port St. Lucie, Florida takes his 9-year-old dog Sarah Jane for a walk around the lake across the street from his house twice a day, every day. Smith, who uses an electric wheelchair to get around, was on one of his regular walks earlier this month when something out of the ordinary happened. The left wheel of his wheelchair got stuck in some loose mud (泥土), and as he tried to reverse (倒车)out of it, his wheelchair lost balance. He ended up turning over his wheelchair and rolling down the bank into the lake.Sensing her owner was in trouble, Sarah Jane began barking (吠叫)loudly as Smith struggled to keep his head above the water. Her continuous barking caught the attention of two neighbors working in their driveway across the street, who rushed over to see what was wrong. One of those men was Edward Shuling, who said in the beginning he thought the dog might have gotten into a fight with a crocodile (鳄鱼), before he saw Smith's head sticking out of the water.“Immediately I just jumped in,”Shuling told TCPalm.“It's just a natural reaction.”A second neighbor, Aby“Jacob”Chacko, was following closely behind and happened to spot Officer Adam Doty on his way down to the water. Together, the three men pulled Smith out of the water and back to safety, much to his—and Sarah Jane's—relief. With no serious injuries, Smith was cleared to go home but his electric wheelchair was no longer working due to water damage. And in a post showing the sweet moment by the Port St. Lucie Police Department, Officer Doty and Sarah Jane, of course, helped Smith get back to his house.“We are thankful to Mr. Smith's dog and the two passers-by that helped save his life!”the post reads.24.What caused the accident?A.The wheelchair tripped over a dog.B.Harry Smith tried to move closer to the bank.C.The wheelchair took a sharp turn to reverse.D.A wheel of the wheelchair got caught in the mud.25.What did Edward Shuling think was happening at first?A.A dog was struggling with a crocodile.B.A man was being run after by a dog.C.A dog was warning people of a crocodile.D.A man was fighting with a crocodile. 26.What can we learn from the last paragraph?A.Harry Smith got a new electric wheelchair.B.Sarah Jane was praised by the post for what she did.C.Harry Smith was seriously injured in the accident.D.The police looked into the case and found out the reason.27.Which of the following sayings agrees with the story?A.Every dog has its day.B.A barking dog does not bite.C.A man's best friend is his dog.D.A friend in need is a friend indeed. If you live in a region where winter weather is a regular risk, you are likely used to pouring salt on your sidewalks. But how does it work? And how much salt do humans pour onto our planet’s surface? The second question is easier to answer: a lot.Salt doesn’t directly melt ice, nor does it make snow simply disappear. Instead it makes water less likely to freeze in a phenomenon called freezing point depression. In the case of simple rock salt, which is a rawer, less pure version of table salt, each molecule (分子) splits into smaller elements. Normally, when water freezes into ice, its molecules line up to form a stable, orderly structure. Salt interrupts the process, however, and temperatures must drop lower to overcome that interruption and for freezing to occur. But if salt needs to interact with liquid water, how does it do anything when temperatures are stubbornly below freezing, and water should already be in the form of ice? That’s where cars help clear their own way by creating friction and, in turn, heat. The friction allows for the ice that has already frozen to melt a little bit, making it unlikely to freeze.Beyond rock salt’s ability to clear icy streets, it can also be destructive. Chloride ions (氯离子) can cause wear and tear on vehicles and facilities. Increasing chloride densities in North American lakes could begin to upset local ecology and degrade sources of drinking water. Many local governments are looking for alternatives to rock salt. Other salts such as magnesium chloride and calcium chloride work in the same way as rock salt, and they’re perhaps even more efficient. Some experiments are testing other ice-preventing solutions, including those that contain sugars instead of or in addition to salts. Another approach relies more heavily on sand, which can mechanically make roads safer. All of this experimentation is aimed at ensuring people can travel in any weather condition — a Herculean task when winter brings its worst. 28.What’s the purpose of the first sentence in Paragraph 2?A.To introduce the topic.B.To give some evidence.C.To define the phenomenon.D.To reveal the misconception.29.How does salt work to disturb the process of freezing?A.By lowering the temperature.B.By melting and splitting itself.C.By lining up to form a solid structure.D.By stopping the formation of the structure. 30.What does the underlined word “densities” in Paragraph 4 mean?A.Concentrations.B.Weights.C.Qualities.D.Salts. 31.What’s the last paragraph mainly talking about?A.Other salts won’t disturb local ecology.B.Efforts are being made to guarantee safe travels.C.Many alternatives are available to solve the problem.D.Bitter winter make it impossible to secure road safety. When you hear the word “artificial intelligence”, the first thing that comes to mind is robotics, but what truly is artificial intelligence and what does the future hold for it? Artificial intelligence is any device or machine that mimics cognitive (认知的) functions humans associate with the human mind, such as learning and problem solving. Examples of artificial intelligence in our day to day lives include: Siri, Google, advertising and so much more. Every industry is incorporating (吸收/包含) artificial intelligence into its back bone.Currently, the effects of artificial intelligence seem all positive. Artificial intelligence will lead to more new and important discoveries in the future, through its predictive modelling. In 2017, NASA reported the discovery of an eight-planet solar system with the help of AI. It can also predict the emergence of any new virus, disease or epidemic and discover a corresponding drug to treat it by accessing and analyzing multiple sets of data. This in turn will help the healthcare industry develop Al programs that will improve longevity and predict the time of the first sign of diseases, improve drug research processes and assist doctors in diagnosis. However, there are still a lot of public concerns. An article titled “The Future of Work” gives a practical view on the influence of artificial intelligence and automation in our job industry. It predicts that by 2030, job losses will reach a rate of twenty nine percent, with an even lesser job creation percentage of thirteen percent. In 2014, a chat bot known as Eugene Goostman passed theTuring test, making judges think it was a human and leading to a lot of raised concerns. Does this mean that with future research, robots can insert themselves smoothly into our environment? It gives people a lot of food for thought. The future of artificial intelligence is both fascinating and alarming. Privacy laws and security guidelines should be reviewed to protect everyone from vulnerability (脆弱性). Still if researches continue to be done with exposure and responsibility, the balance would not tip in favor of the negative.32.According to the passage, AI can be used ________.A.to reduce job creationB.to insert themselves smoothly into our livesC.to make scientific breakthroughD.to prevent the emergence of new virus, disease or epidemic33.By mentioning the medical use in paragraph 2, the author wanted ________.A.to introduce a new way to cure any disease.B.to explain the value of artificial intelligence.C.to show the effectiveness of artificial intelligence treatment.D.to discuss the possibility of artificial intelligence replacing doctors.34.What can we infer from the last sentence in paragraph 4?A.Currently, there are more negative effects caused by AI.B.More researches are needed in order to further develop AI.C.It’s very difficult to balance the exposure and responsibility in researches.D.It's possible to reduce the negative effects of AI in the future.35.What is the main idea of the passage?A.Artificial Intelligence will change the future.B.The future needs regulation of Artificial Intelligence.C.Artificial Intelligence has made scientific breakthroughs.D.Artificial Intelligence does more harm than good to humans.Lessons to Learn from NatureAs we become more and more separated from nature, we start to realize how much wedepend on it. People often seek for wisdom, experience, and knowledge. Guess who’s been around in this world longer than mother nature? The followings are the lessons nature can teach us.36 As the daily, monthly, and yearly cycles change, everything in nature changes, too. Leaves change their color, flowers turn into fruits, some animals sleep throughout the whole winter, and when they wake up, it’s spring again — a new beginning. What we need to learn is that change is a good thing. 37Nature is flexible. Flexibility is what helps a leaf endure. If there’s a lot of sun in the area, the leaves of a particular plant will be smaller, thicker, and will change their color. Leaves growing in the shade, on the other hand, will be larger, greener, and thinner, so they could absorb more sunlight. 3839 When you spend time in nature, by the sea, in the forest, or in the desert, you’ll notice nothing really happens hurriedly. 40 We overload ourselves with work that we can’t fit into 24 hours and then we get stressed out. Stop for a moment. Breathe. Set your priorities and change your life’s tempo.A.Nature is never in a rush.B.Nature is ever-changing.C.Nature always has its own pace.D.The ability to adapt quickly is an important ability.E.On the other hand, human beings are always in a hurry.F.Accepting change makes us more adaptable, and that sets us free.G.It’s important for the leaves to know how to adapt to the environment.三、完形填空As the saying goes, “Interest is the seed of everything”. In the summer of 2009, at age 14, I went to northern Mozambique(Africa) with my dad to help repair water wells(井) in local villages. I took my soccer ball along. I thought I might be able to play with the local kids. When we arrived at the village of Ntette, I threw out my ball and soon, 50 kids were playing .Many of these kids had never had the chance to enjoy playin g soccer with a real ball. For me, it’s no big deal to play soccer with a real ball. I do it all the time.I’ve discovered that many kids in poor countries want to play soccer, but they can’t because they don’t have a ball. I have several soccer balls in m y house. And that’s why I started Charity Ball in 2010. It provides new soccer balls for kids in poor communities around the world.25. It gives new soccer balls to kids in poor communities.28. We can learn from the passage that Ethan is ___________.A. kindB. talentedC. braveD. carefulCWhat time of day can you think most quickly? Are you a morning person? Or does it take you a few hours to get your brain (脑)going? A lot of recent research suggests that we should pay attention to our body clock. It can tell u s what time of day we can perform(表现) best at.Ma ny people work best later in the morning. This is because the body’s temperature takes time to rise through the day. Taking a warm shower when you wake up can help your body’s temperature rise quickly. But everyone’s body clock is different and some are sp ecial. Morning people will get up early and work better early in the day. Evening people will work later but work better towards the end of the day.Research shows that we’re better at some activities at certain times of the day. Physical performance (体能) is at its best between 3 pm and 6 pm, so it’s better to exercise later in the day.Between noon and 4 pm, people begin to pay less attention. D. World-class.BI was in the second year of my Ph. D. program when a colleague asked what I would do if I had an extra hour every day. Without much consideration, I said I would use it to help others. The question kept coming to my mind. Like many graduate students, I was overwhelmed (难以承受的) with research, teaching, coursework, and some attempt at a personal life. Still, I asked myself, "Do I really need a 25th hour to help other people-or do I need to make better use of the 24 hours I have?"I needed something to help me return to my old self. After that conversation with my colleague, I googled (谷歌搜索) “volunteer opportunities near me”. A local organization that drives people to stores or appointments was looking for volunteers. Having grown up in a rural village where everyone knew oneanother and my grandparents were always close by, I thought serving senior citizens in my new hometown might be just what I needed.A short time later, I started to volunteer for an organization that provides transportation for senior citizens and people with disabilities. To my surprise, adding this activity to my busy life was just what I needed to calm the confusion I was feeling as a first-generation international graduate student.I started to volunteer about 3 hours every weekend, the time I otherwise would have wasted oversleeping or scrolling (滚屏) through social media. Sharing stories with my riders was much more rewarding. What they told me about their lives helped me realize that in every corner of the world, humans are connected with the languageof emotions. And seeing how eager my riders were to spend time out and about inspired me to think about how to spend my time, which used to slip away. My previously overwhelming schedule began to feel manageable.I'm proud of who I have become, and I continue to reflect on how I'm using the most valuable thing in life: my time.4. Why did the author ask himself the question in Paragraph 1?A. He wanted to return to normal life.B. He was busy but wanted to help others.C. He couldn't bear too much school work.D. He got it by surfing on the Internet.6. What made the author feel his volunteer job was worth doing?A. Communicating with his riders.B. Improving his language learning.C. Meeting his grandparents often.D. Realizing his previous dream.7. How did volunteering influence the author?A. It helped himbecome confident and efficient.B. He found a good way to live a free and quiet life.C. He realized he had wasted too much time pursuing his Ph.D.D. It inspired him to spare more time to accompany his grandparents.CWhere doyou usually put your toothbrush?Do you keep it in the bathroom? How’s your toothbrush looking these days? Even if you can’t see it with a naked eye, experts say it may be saturated(使饱和)with millions of toilet germs!Dr. Charles Oerba, a germ expert, is amicrobiology professor at the University of Arizona. He says there are approximately 3 million bacteria per square inch in most toilet bowls, and every time you flush it without closing the lid, those millions of bacteria droplets spray into the air as far as twenty feet away and dirty everything in their path. And a common victim is your poor toothbrush, usually, left out on the bathroom sink, right? So, what do we do? Dr. Gerba says it’s easy. Close the toilet lid before you flush—that’ll greatly cut downthe germs, which will otherwise float in the air. And wash your toothbrush every few days in mouthwash or peroxide to get rid of any germs hiding in it. You can even put it through the dishwasher to sanitize(消毒)it. And always store your toothbrush in a closed cabinet. Here’s one more tip from Dr. Gerba, who says our kitchen sink is probably dirtier than our toilet. “If an alien came from space and studied the bacterial counts, he probably would conclude he should wash his hands in your toilet and go to the bathroom in your sink.” He says that’s because the kitchen sink is a great place where E. coli(大肠杆菌)to live and grow since it’s wet and damp. Bacteria feed on the food that people put down the drain or—that’s left on dishes in the sink. To reset your sink’s bacteria count back to zero, you’d better regularly wash it with hot water and sanitize yoursink with special chemicals. In fact, you may want to do it every day or before preparing dinner.8. What is the purpose of the text?A. To show how to brush your teeth.B. To tell people the importance of health.C. To warn people of the invisible germs.D. To introduce a microbiology professor.9. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?A. Bathroom sinks are the dirtiest places.B. Bacteria are bad for people’s health.C. Why bacteria spread through the air.D. How bacteria spread in the bathroom.10. What does the underlined word“that”in Paragraph 4 refer to?A. The food.B. The toothbrush.C. The sink.D. The chemical.11. Why does Dr. Gerba mention the example of an alien?A. To tell us a fiction story of an alien studying bacteria.B. To show our kitchen sink may be dirtier than our toilet.C. To teach us how to reset sink’s bacteria count back to zero.D. To prove coli prefers to live in the kitchen and the drain.DOne Sunday morning, my family and I went to a popular restaurant for breakfast. As soon as we walked into Restaurant Happy Meal, a young waitress showed us to a table. We ordered our food and soon after, our food came. Just as we were about to begin our meal, we heard someone shouting for the boss.“What is this? A dead fly in my food!’’ a man with a deep scar (疤) acrosshis face shouted angrily. His companion, a huge man with a tattoo on his arm, stared angrily at the boss who stood nervously in front of the two gangsters (歹徒).The boss apologized repeatedly to the angry customers and tried to calm them down by offering to replace their food. He even told them that they could have their meal for free. The commotion(混乱) affected the business of the restaurant. Fearing that aquarrel would happen, manycustomers quickly paid for their meals and left the restaurant hurriedly. Some of them had not even finished their breakfast. My father told us to eat our food quickly and not to look at the two angry men. We obeyed him and finished our food within minutes. That was probably the quietest and fastest breakfast my family ever had.Although my father warned us not to look at the two unruly (任性的) customers, I could not help stealing a glance at them.I saw that the boss had managed to calm the two angry customers. Fresh food and drinks were brought to their table. They sat down again and continued their breakfast. Meanwhile the waitress who had shown us to our table earlier swept up the broken china.12.
