On Monday, Ted and I rented bicycles for the entire family and went around on paths for about an hour. Our two older daughters had their own bikes with training wheels. However, this was the first time that I was on a bicycle in close to ten years.

I used to ride to work every day when Ted and I got married.

I had never been so interested in biking until this Monday. To my surprise, I felt a little scared. At first I wasn’t sure if I would be able to ride a bike. I tried to ride a bicycle and it was the strangest feeling. I couldn’t keep my balance.

I couldn’t move the pedals (踏板). I thought that I had forgotten how to ride a bicycle. It was embarrassing (令人尴尬的), especially when two of my daughters were already on their bikes, wondering what was wrong with Mommy.

After a few tries with the help of Ted, I found that I could ride it. It did come back! I found that I could ride a bike at least as well as our young children, and at the moment I didn’t need to go any faster than them anyway. Someone had to stay in the rear and keep an eye on the kids!

Now, I’m looking forward to enjoying years of biking as a family! The kids like it and I like it too! I’m realizing that many things can be like riding a bicycle —if you haven’t done it in a while, once you overcome a little difficulty, you can get back into it again, almost as if you never left.

This morning I went to the Catholic (天主教的) school in town, where my daughter Susan and my son David were studying. This morning, Susan joined her second grade class in the taking of their “first communion (圣餐式)”.

The priest (神父) seemed quite satisfied in front of an entire school of children dressed in the same clothes together with their parents or relatives. He began the speech by asking the kids to share a story of a time when they were at their happiest. One child who was eager to please wisely said, “At my first communion.” Wasn’t it surprising how quickly we learned to please others?
