在日本，纪录片拍摄者基本上都站在反抗权力的立场，甚至纪录片本身就是一种反抗的形式。
小川绅介导演生前最后的谈话是这样的：“我不承认…国家‟这个名词，…国家‟这个名词是可以不要的。
”1967年三里冢地区开始要兴建机场，当地村民为了保护自己的土地而与警察抗争，抵抗坚持了五年一直到1972年，这五年期间小川绅介带着剧组成员一直住在村里，他坚持“尽可能呆在现场”，通过时间的流变来展现示威斗争中真实动人的一面，当几年来一直抗争的农妇用铁链将自己和孩子锁在一起，面对警察面露坚毅之色时，它所表现出的震撼力量无法用语言描述，因此[三里冢]被称为“达到了古典武士戏剧的水平”。

177人中，36名来自美国，19名来自英国，5名来自加拿大、古巴、法国和德国，4名来自澳大利亚、哥伦比亚、印度、以色列和意大利。
黎巴嫩、阿联酋、中国、孟加拉国、智利、纳米比亚、哈萨克斯坦和其他许多国家也有代表。
在177名影评人中，55名女性，122名男性。
他们中，有些是报纸或杂志的评论员，有些为网站撰写专栏；也有学者和电影策展人。
这些电影是怎么选出的？根据电影的得票高低，选出100部（实际上是102部，因为有三部电影并列排在第100名）按影片年份统计：排名第一的是DavidLynch导演的《穆赫兰道》，出现在2001年。
