A Useless Skill
Zhu Ping-man learned the skill of killing dragons. He spent all his money. Three years later, he mastered the skill, which, however, had never been used.
The Art of Carving Dragons
Zhu Pingman went to Zhili Yi to learn how to carve dragons for the table. He studied for three years and spent all his very considerable property before he mastered the subject. But he never found a dragon on which to practice his art.
游泳名手的儿子
有过于江上者,见人方引婴儿,而欲投之江中,婴儿啼。人问其故。曰:“此其父善游。”其父虽善游,其子岂遽善游哉!
A Good Swimmer’s Son
A man came across a river. When he saw Ren Fang taking his son, he wanted to throw him into the river. The boy was frightened to cry. Others asked him for the reason. He said, “ His father is a good swimmer.” Although his father was good at swimming, his son was not definitely so.
The Son of a Good Swimmer
A man walking along the river bank saw someone about to throw a small boy into the water. The child was screaming with terror.
“Why do you want to throw that child into the river?” asked the passer-by.
“His father is a good swimmer.” was the answer.
But it does not follow that the son of a good swimmer can swim.
滥竽充数(The Man Who Pretended He Could Play Reed Pipes) 齐宣王使人吹竽,必三百人。南郭处士请为王吹竽。宣王说之,廪食以数百人。宣王死,湣王立,好一一听之。处士逃。
The king Xuan of the kingdom Qi asked some musicians to play reed pipes for him. A gentleman from a south kingdom was invited to join in. Because king Xuan liked the music, he collected hundreds of musicians in his palace. After king Xuan died, his son became the new king. However, he liked listening people play the reed pipe one by one. On this, the gentleman escaped.
When Prince Xuan of Qi called for reed pipe music, he would have three hundred men playing at the same time. Then a scholar named Nanguo asked for a place in the orchestra, and the prince, taking a fancy to him, gave him a salary large enough to feed several hundred men.
After Prince Xuan’s death, however, Prince Min came to the throne, and he liked solo performances. There upon the scholar fled.
守株待兔
宋人有耕田者。田中有株。兔走触株,折颈而死。因释其耒耒而守株,冀复得兔。兔不可复得,而身为宋国笑。
Waiting for the Hare
A farmer of Song Kingdom was working in his field where there was a tree. Suddenly a hare bumped into the tree trunk and died of a broken neck. Since then, he put down his tool and waited at the tree trunk day after day in the hope of harvesting another hare. Then he became a laughing stock of the Song Kingdom.

There was a peasant in the state of Song. One day a hare dashed up, knocked against a tree in
