While numerous studies have looked at how individual habits may extend or shorten a person's life, far fewer have tried to quantify the benefits of practicing a number of healthy habits together, especially for people who begin only later in life. This was the focus of a 2007 study published in The American Journal of Medicine. The trial examined whether newly adopting a healthy lifestyle in middle age could still produce significant benefits, in terms of lower risk of heart disease.A group of 15,792 older men and women living in four different communities in the United States were tracked from 1987 to 1998. Aged 45 to 64 years, the subjects were examined for their weight, height, dietary intake, smoking habits and exercise. The researchers noted they did not include moderate alcohol consumption, because the study aimed to assess the effect of adopting new healthy habits, and beginning to drink in middle age is not widely recommended.Interestingly, at the beginning of the study only 8.5% of the subjects were practicing all four healthy habits. After 6 years, an additional 970 people had adopted all four of the primary habits. The most common switch was to begin eating at least 5 fruits and vegetables each day.The researchers examined the ‘‘successful switchers’’,and concluded that the subjects most likely to change habits for the better were older, female, those with a college education, higher income and without a history of high blood pressure. After four additional years of follow-up the healthiest lifestyle switchers enjoyed a 40% reduction in the risk of death from any cause, and a 35% lower chance of heart attack or strokes.2、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

he sometimes forgot what he was talking about in the middle of a sentence. His wife had to constantly remind him about his meetings, his classes—even his meals!Once he forgot he had eaten breakfast twice,at home and at school. His wife liked to remind her neighbors,“If John didn't have his head tied on,he would forget that too!”Since Smith was a professor at a well-known university, his forgetfulness was often an embarrassment to him.It wasn't that he was not clever,as some critical people tended to say,but just very, very absentminded. One hot summer day, professor Smith decided to take his children to a seaside town about a threehour train ride away.To make the trip more interesting for his young children,he kept the name of the town a secret. However,by the time they arrived at the station,Smith forgot the name of the town he was planning to visit.Luckily,a friend of his happened to be in the station. He offered to take care of the children while Smith hurried back home to find out where he was going. The professor's wife was surprised to see him again so soon.“Oh,my dear,I forgot the name of the town.”“What? You forgot the name? Maybe one day you will forget my name!NowI'll write the name of that town on a piece of paper, and you put it in your pocket and please, please don't forget where you put it.”Satisfied that she had solved the problem, she sent her husband off again.Ten minutes later she was astonished to see him outside the house for the third time. Paragraph 1:“What is the matter now?”asked his wife.Paragraph 2:Hearing the cry,out rushed their neighbors, trying to find out what had happened.【写作指导】本文属于记叙文类读后续写. 值得注意的是,续写的内容不能一味追求故事的离奇性而忽略文章的逻辑性.【参考范文】“What is the matter now?” asked his wife.“I just can't remember why I come back and where I am supposed to be going on such a hot summer day,”replied the professor. However, the real reason was that he forgot where he had left his children.Sensing something wrong,Mrs Smith didn't believe his words, because whenever he told a lie,he would blink his eyes usually quickly.“Tell me the truth,”ordered his wife.“As you told me,I didn't forget where I put the name of that town, but I forget the station where I left our children!” whispered the professor, his voice trembling.“What a bad memory!” shouted the wife.Hearing the cry,out rushed their neighbors, trying to find out what had happened.A fight between the couple was about to start when the professor's cell phone began to ring. His friend, whose patience had worn thin, phoned to complain. The professor apologized, got into his car and drove away, leaving behind a bunch of people outside the house.Being afraid that he would make matters worse again,Mrs Smith decided to follow him,who then called a taxi.By the time she caught up with her husband, the children were already back home safe and sound.【导学号:85602001】。

For this, there are many reasons but most of them stem from not being able to properly understand their teens. It is a dangerous gap because parents will have to communicate with their teens about a wide variety of issues during the most important years of their lives. Thus, parents must know how to communicate openly and honestly with their teens. Here are a few tips to make communication easier between parents and teenagers. As parents, you should listen to what children said carefully and pay muchattention to it.Make them feel as if their views really matter, which not only helps your discussions with your teen but brings you closer to him.Meanwhile, try to remember some of the negative feelings you experienced as a teenager and apply it to your teen's situation.Never make negative remarks to your teen about what she has said or done.Remember how much courage it would have taken for your teen to come and talk to you about his personal issues. So listen respectfully. If your teen is unusually angry,it may be time to spend a bit of quality time with your teen to determine what is wrong and where it is coming from.It is,therefore, necessary for parents to strive to keep lines of communication open at all times with their teens.Try to remember what it was like to be a teenager and how vulnerable(脆弱的) you felt. Then you will be well on your way to helping your teen communicate more openly and honestly.【写作指导】本文首先提出问题:很多家长不会和孩子公开、诚实地沟通. There are various reasons for a difficult communication between parents and their teens.(要点1)Here are some tips:Try not to talk down to your teens.Imagine what it would be like to be a teen.Listen respectfully to your teens.Don't ignore your teens' feelings.(要点2)As long as you keep lines of communication open and remember what it was like to be a teenager, you will be well on the way to communicating with your teens.(要点3)C阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要.During all kinds of holidays, millions of people will buy gifts for loved ones.Which is great—except that tons of those people will make the same glaringmistake, and buy the wrong gift. What's going on?Gift buying has become a deceivingly selfish pursuit. We don't actually look for things people want to receive.Instead, and to many of our gifts' detriments,we tend to look for things that we want to give. It's a subtle, but pretty significant problem.Research has shown that givers tend to value the gifts they buy considerably more than recipients.Gifts are valued roughly 10 to 33 percent less by recipients than what givers paid for them,Joel Waldfogel noted in Scroogenomics:Why You Shouldn't Buy Presents for the Holidays, his 2009 book on giftgiving. The discrepancy seems to come from a simple misplaced belief that thoughtful presents are the best presents. They are not.In fact, they might just be the worst presents. The more thought you put into a present, the more likely you are to stray from buying what the person you're buying the present for actually wants. In other words, people let their giftgiving egos get in the way of great presents.Especially when the recipient is someone they want to show they know really well.Fortunately, the answer to our collective insistence on guessing what people want is simple:stop it.If that's too callous,or impersonal, there's another helpful rule of thumb.Instead of buying restrictive gifts, like gift cards for specific stores, buy gifts that allow for flexibility, like gift cards that can be used more broadly (or,better yet, cash).People tend to prefer gift cards to actual gifts, and cash to both,Steffel explained.Steffel's latest research, which focuses on gift card giving, points to exactly this point—that versatility is the key to better gift giving.【写作指导】通读全文可知,本文是一篇议论文,按照提出问题、分析问题、解决问题的顺序来组织文章. Although many people will buy gifts during holidays, some of them may buy the wrong gifts.(要点1) They buy what they want to give, instead of what the recipients requires;(要点2) they tend to value the gifts they buy considerably more than recipients do.(要点3) The thoughtful presents might be the worst presents, and we should stop it.(要点4)Instead of buying restrictive gifts,we are supposed to buy flexible ones—versatility is the key to better gift giving.(要点5)【导学号:85602030】D阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要.Is there a way to turn back the clock on your age? A new study says yes.Exercise can make you younger. At least it can lower your fitness age—that is the measure of how well your body works.A study of athletes in the National Senior Games found that their fitness age was more than 20 years younger than their chronological age.The games took place in the Midwestern state of Minnesota.Tony Diamond took part in the games.Every morning he went to a local park and walked fast for an hour. Then, the retired navy captain ran for an hour. Two or three times a week,he went to a gym for muscle training.Mr.Diamond won three medals at the 2015 National Senior Games.“My current age is 86 years old,and my fitness age is 44.I think I have such a good number because I do a lot of exercise during my life.I have been exercising since I was a little boy.”Helen White is a basketball player. She also teaches the sport to senior groups. And she plays pickleball. She won a sliver medal in pickleball at the 2013 National Senior Games.“I'm 62 years old and my fitness results showed that I was 32 years.”Ms White and Mr.Diamond are some of the 5,000 Senior Games participants who took part in the fitness age study.Pamela Peeke was an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Maryland. She worked on the study with Ulrik Wisloff at the Norwegian University ofScience and Technology.Mr.Wisloff developed a fitness calculator. An online calculator is available for anyone to use for free.Ms Peeke says there are benefits from using this test. The National Senior Games take place every two years. It is a competition for athletes older than 50.The games are a variety of sports. This year the average age of the people competing was 68,but their average fitness age was 43.【写作指导】本文是一篇议论文. 后面几段涉及到的是论据.【参考范文】Exercise can lower one's fitness age.(要点1) A study of athletes in the National Senior Games found that their fitness age was more than 20 years younger than their chronological age.(要点2) Mr.Diamond looks younger than his chronological age because he goes to a gym regularly.(要点3) Ms White is 62 years old but her fitness age is 32 years old because of regular exercise.(要点4)。

I had much practice climbing drainpipes (排水管) as a teenager, when I forgot my keys. It wasn’t a skill I expected to need again on a sunny bank holiday.I’d arranged to meet my wife in the beer garden of a local hotel. As I approached, I could hear raised voices. I thought maybe some people had drunk, but as I walked into the garden, I saw everyone looking up, including my wife. Following their sight, I saw a child on top of a roof sticking out from the hotel.I realized the people in the garden had arranged themselves underneath, in the hope that one of them would be able to catch him if he fell. From the other side of the roof, I heard a woman’s voice begging him to sit down and keep still. It was the boy’s mother, who had tried to climb up to him and become trapped halfway. The child ignored his mother’s voice and his every movement brought a fresh gasp (倒抽气) of anxiety from onlookers. The firemen had been called, but no one knew how long they’d take. I imagined the firemen working their way across the city, slowed by holiday traffic. The thought of looking on helplessly as the boy lost his footing made me feel sick. Scanning the side of the building, I quickly worked out the quickest way up and made for the drainpipe. It was old and looked as if it might break away from the wall, but I managed to quickly climb onto the roof. Above me, the child paid me little attention and didn’t appear to be frightened at all. He was no older than two. I realized I’d be unable to predict his responses. My only choice now was to keep climbing. The roof narrowed as it rose and I planted myself as firmly as I could on the edge, caught the boy and helped him on to my lap.

Parents everywhere praise their kids. Jenn Berman, author of The A to Z Guide to Raising Happy and Confident Kids, says, "We’ve gone to the opposite extreme of a few decades ago when parents tended to be more strict." By giving kids a lot of praise, parents think they’re building their children’ confidence, when, in fact, it may be just the opposite. Too much praise can backfire and, when given in a way that’s insincere, make kids afraid to try new things or take a risk for fear of not being able to stay on top where their parents’ praise has put them.Still, don’t go too far in the other direction. Not giving enough praise can be just as damaging a giving too much. Kids will feel like they’re not good enough or that you don’t care and, as a result, may see no point in trying hard for their accomplishments. So what is the right amount of praise? Experts say that the quality of praise is more important than the quantity. If praiseis sincere and focused on the effort not the outcome, you can give it as often as your child does something that deserves a verbal reward."We should especially recognize our children’s efforts to push themselves and work hard to achieve a goal," says Donahue, author of Parenting Without Fear: Letting Go of Worry and Focusing on What Really Matters. "One thing to remember is that it’s the process not the end product that matters.”Your son may not be the best basketball player on his team. But if he’s out there every day and playing hard, you should praise his effort regardless of whether his team wins or loses. Praising the effort and not the outcome can also mean recognizing your child when she has worked hard to clean the yard, cook dinner, or finish a book report. But whatever it is, praise should be given on a case-by-case basis and be proportionate (相称的)to the amount of effort your child has put into it.二、思路点拨本篇概要写作是浙江新高考改革中的亮点,延续了2018年11月浙江英语考试试卷中的概要写作题型。

finished college at home in Britain,Pat chose to visit Latin America first,so she managed to get a job as an English teacher in a secondary school in Bolivia.Pat spoke a little Spanish,so she was able to communicate with her students even though they did not know much English.A sentence she had once read somewhere stuck in her mind:if you dream in a foreign language,it means that you have really mastered it.Pat repeated this sentence to her students and she hoped that someday she would dream in Spanish and they would dream in English. One day,Tim,one of the worst students in her class, came up to her and explained in Spanish that he had not done his homework. He said that he had gone to bed early and had slept badly.Pat was quite angry with him,for she did not think that his explanation had anything to do with his homework. But Tim told her that hedreamed all night and his dream was in English.“In English!” Pat thought. She was greatly surprised, since Tim was such a bad student. She was also secretly jealous. Her dreams were still not in Spanish, but she decided to encourage her student and asked him to tell her about his dream.“All the people in my dream spoke English,”Tim said.“And all the signs were in English. All the newspapers and magazines and all the TV programs were in English.”“But that's wonderful,”said Pat.“What did all the people say to you?” she asked.“I'm sorry.Miss Jones,That's why I slept so badly all through the night.I didn't understand a word they said.It was a nightmare!” Tim answered. Paragraph 1:After hearing the boy's w ords,Pat,Paragraph 2:In order to inspire her students to to shake her belief in the sentence stuck in her mind. Her jealousy had all gone.Staring into the boy's eyes,Pat sensed something wrong hidden there.Obviously, the boy was telling a lie.Seeing the negative effect his behavior would have on her students,Pat decided to teach the boy a lesson.Though she knew only a little Spanish, she decided to scold him using the language. In order to inspire her students to speak English,Pat arranged for several people in the secondary school to have weekly talks, their topics ranging from travelling around the world to language learning methods. After several weeks, many of her students came running to her, telling her that they finally dreamed in English. This time, instead of being jealous,Pat felt proud of them, saying she would also try her best to learn Spanish so that one day she would also dream in Spanish.Ⅲ. As is known to all, sports stars earn large amounts of money every year.LeBron James, the famous American basketball star, for instance, earns an income of more than 20 million dollars a year. Some people hold the view that these stars do not deserve the high pay that they are getting. Some even argue that sports stars do nothing to society apart from entertaining people.Their contributions to society are much less than those made by doctors, firemen, scientists, professors, etc. But I can never agree with that. While sports are for entertainment,it does not mean that they are not important to people's life. Why do so many people go to see football matches and NBA games? It is because they enjoy the games, and they are willing to pay to watch theperformances.Because of the sports stars, our life becomes more exciting. Some sports stars gain honor for their countries, and their countrymen are proud of them. They contribute to the spiritual wellbeing of their people. What's more, sports stars usually are at the top level in their fields. In this world, you have to pay if you want the best.It is the same with sports.Skills in sports are like the skills in works of art.People will not say that Da Vinci's painting Mona Lisa was bought with too much money. Most stars are skilled in their own field not only because of their talents but also because of their hard training. They have to keep performing at their peak to earn that good income.Their influence on the national economy can not be overlooked.Take NBA in America, for example. The stars help to support not only the basketball industry, but also other related industries like sportswear and sports equipment.Sports stars also make constant appearances in advertisements.Since they are well known in the world, they attract many people's attention, which often leads to an immediate boom in the sales of the products that are advertised by them.I hope one day their accomplishments will be fully recognized.【写作指导】本文是一篇议论文,主要讨论了体育明星高收入的问题. Different from some people's views, the writer believes sports stars' pay is not too high but reasonable.(要点1)First,sports stars' performances bring people excitement and spiritual wellbeing.(要点2)Besides,they are the best in their fields thanks to their talents and hard training.(要点3)Lastly,sports stars like these in NBA contribute to the national economy by benefiting basketball industry and otherindustries such as advertising industry.(要点4)。

It was a cold winter day.A woman drove up to the Rainbow Bridge tollbooth(收费站).“I'm paying for myself, and for the six cars behind me,”she said with a smile, handing over seven tickets. One after another, the next six drivers arriving at the tollbooth were informed,“Some lady up ahead already paid your fare.”It turned out that the woman,Natalie Smith, had read something on a friend's refrigerator:“Practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty.” The phrase impressed her so much that she copied it down as soon as she got home.Judy Foreman spotted the same phrase on a warehouse wall far away from home. When it stayed on her mind for days, she gave up and drove all the way back to copy it down in her diary.“I thought it was beautiful,”she said, explaining why she'd taken to writing it at the bottom of all her letters,“like a message from above.”Her husband,Frank, liked the phrase so much that he put it up on the classroom wall for his students, one of whom was the daughter of Alice Johnson,a local news reporter.Alice put it in the newspaper, admitting that though she liked it,she didn't know where it came from or what it really meant. She really wanted to find out the originator(创作者) of this phrase and know about the story of it.Two days later,Alice got a call from Anne Herbert,a woman living in Marin. It was in a restaurant that Anne wrote the phrase down on a piece of paper, after turning it around in her mind for days. The restaurant was decorated in a simple style and the owner had a kind heart. He regularly handed out food to the beggars nearby, which left a deep impression on Anne. Then Alice asked her what her idea was.

Some years ago, writing in my diary used to be a usual activity.I would return from school and spend the expected half hour recording the day’s events, feelings, and impressions in my little blue diary. I did not really need to express my emotions by way of words, but I gained a certain satisfaction from seeing my experiences forever recorded on paper. After all, isn’t accumulating memories a way of preserving the past? When I was thirteen years old, I went on a long journey on foot in a great valley, wellequipped with pens, a diary, and a camera. During the trip, I was busy recording every incident, name and place I came across. I felt proud to be spending my time productively, dutifully preserving for future generations a detailed description of my travels. On my last night there, I wandered out of my tent, diary in hand. The sky was clear and lit by the glare of the moon, and the walls of the valley looked threatening behind their screen of shadows. I automatically took out my pen ... At that point, I understood that nothing I wrote could ever match or replace the few seconds I allowed myself to experience the dramatic beauty of the valley. All I remembered of the previous few days were the dull characterizations I had set down in my diary. Now, I only write in my diary when I need to write down a special thought or feeling. I still love to record ideas and quotations that strike me in books, or observations that are particularly meaningful. I take pictures, but not very often — only of objects I find really beautiful. I’m no longer blindly satisfied with having something to remember when I grow old. I realize that life will simply pass me by if I stay behind the camera, busy preserving the present so as to live it in the future.I don’t want to wake up one day and have nothing but a pile of pictures and notes. Maybe I won’t have as many exact representations of people and places; maybe I’ll forget certain facts, but at least the experiences will always remain inside me. I don’t live to make memories —I just live, and the memories form themselves.

In the 2019 Zhejiang College Entrance Examination, the English writing section is a crucial part of the test that requires students to demonstrate their language proficiency and writing skills. In this document, I will provide an overview of the types of writing tasks that may appear in the exam, along with some sample essays to help students prepare for the test. One common type of writing task in the Zhejiang high school entrance exam is the argumentative essay. In this type of essay, students are required to present a clear argument or opinion on a given topic and support it with relevant examples and evidence. For example, students may be asked to discuss whether technology has a positive or negative impact on society, or whether it is better to study abroad or in one's home country. In order to write a successful argumentative essay, it is important to carefully analyze the prompt and identifythe key points that need to be addressed. It is also essential to structure the essay in a logical and coherent manner, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the argument and providing supporting evidence.Another type of writing task that students may encounter in the Zhejiang high school entrance exam is the descriptive essay. In a descriptive essay, students are asked to describe a person, place, or event in detail, using sensory language to create a vivid picture for the reader. In a narrative essay, students are required to tell a story or recount a personal experience in a compelling and engaging way. For example, students may be asked to write about a significant eventthat changed their perspective on life or a memorable encounter with a stranger. When writing a narrative essay, it is important to create a strong narrative arc that captures the reader's interest and builds towards a satisfying conclusion. By using descriptive language, dialogue, and pacing techniques, students can create a compelling story that resonates with the reader.Overall, the English writing section of the 2019 Zhejiang high school entrance exam presents students with a variety of writing tasks that require them to demonstrate their language proficiency and creativity. It was an unusually quiet day in the emergency room on December 25.Quiet, that is, except for those who were standing around the nurses’ station complaining about having to work Christmas Day. I was triage nurse that day and had just been out to the waiting room to clean up. Just then five bodies showed up at my triage desk, a pale woman and four small children.“Are you all sick?” I asked suspiciously.“Y es,” she said weakly and lowered her head. But when it came to descriptions of their present problems, things got a little vague. Two of the children had headaches, but the headaches weren’t accompanied by the normal body language of holding the head or trying to keep it still. Two children had earaches, but only one could tell me which ear was affected. The mother complained of a cough but seemed to work to produce it.Something was wrong, but I didn’t say anything. I explained to the mother that it might be a little while before a doctor saw her. She responded, “Take your time; it’s warm in here.” She turned and, with a smile, guided her children into the waiting room.On a hunch (call it nursing judgment), I checked the chart after the admitting clerk had finished registering the family. No address — they were homeless. The waiting room was warm. I looked out at the family huddled by the Christmas tree. The smallest one was pointing at the television and exclaiming something to her mother. The oldest one was looking at her reflection in a decoration on the Christmas tree.I went back to the nurses’ station and mentioned we had a homeless family in the waiting room. The nurses, complaining about working Christmas, turned to compassion for a family just trying to get warm on Christmas. Then our team went into action, much as we do when there’s a medical emergency. But this one was a Christmas emergency. A special Christmas party was to be held.

该文第一段围绕着首句“Some years ago, writing in my diary used to be a usual activity.”

第二段讲述作者在写日记一事上的转变,全段没有主题句,因此可围绕change一词将本段大意概括为“The author’s attitude towards the diary changed after a trip to a valley.”。

第三段围绕首句“Now, I only write in my diary when I need to write down a special thought or feeling.”

第四段是作者的感悟,即“I don’t live to make memories —I just live, and the memories form themselves.”。

The author had made it a routine to keep a detailed diary of her/his everyday life to store memories.(要点1) That changed after a trip to a valley, where she/he realized breathtaking scenery was meant to be felt with heart rather than written down mechanically.(要点2) Thus, she/he has become selective about what to put in her/his diary, (要点3) focusing on the present instead of busying herself/himself with recording memories for the past or the future.(要点4)三、范文解析要点1中,“made it a routine”准确地表达了作者每日像例行公事般地记日记的状态,用目的状语“to store memories”补充信息,使要点信息更全面。

要点3由Thus一词引出作者现在写日记的方式,即“become selective about what to put in her/his diary”,同时通过非谓语结构“focusing on ... instead of busying ...”

Group singing is a sound that begins inside you, shares it with a roomful of people and it comes back as something even more thrilling: harmony. So it’s not surprising that group singing is on the rise.As the popularity of group singing grows, science has been hard at work trying to explain why it has such a calming yet energizing effect on people. What researchers are beginning to discover is that singing is like a filling of the perfect tranquilizer (镇静剂), the kind that both eases your nerves and lifts your spirits. The high spirits may come from endorphins, a hormone (荷尔蒙) released by singing, which is associated with feelings of pleasure. Or it might be from oxytocin, another hormone released during singing, which has been found to ease anxiety and stress.Oxytocin also strengthens feeling of trust and bonding, which may explain why still more studies have found that singing lessens feelings of depression and loneliness. The benefits of singing regularly seem to be accumulative. In one study, singers were found to have lower levels of stress. Another investigation suggesting that our heart rates may keep pace with each other during group singing could also explain why singing together sometimes feels like a guided group meditation. Study after study has found that singing relieves anxiety and contributes to quality of life.It turns out you don’t even have to be a good singer to gain the rewards.According to one study, group singing “can produce satisfying and therapeutic feelings even when the sound produced by the mouth is of average quality”.Singing groups which vary from casual affairs to serious, professional or a vocational ones will all work.Group singing is cheaper than medical treatment, healthier than drinking, and certainly more fun than working out. It is the one thing in life where feeling better is pretty much guaranteed. Even if you walked into the group exhausted and depressed, by the end of the night you’ll walk out high as a kite on endorphins and good will.
