Cell death was detected histochemically by Trypan Blue staining. Detached leaves were covered with an alcoholic lactophenolTrypan Blue mixture (30 mL ethanol, 10 g phenol, 10 mL H2O, 10 mL glycerol, 10 mL of 10.8 M lactic acid, and 10 mg of Trypan Blue), placed in a boiling water bath for 3 min, left at room temperature for 1 h, then transferred to a chloral hydrate solution (2.5 g/mL), and boiled for 20 min for destaining.
