Unfortunately, book prices are so high nowadays that many students can hardly afford to buy them. In face of soaring book price, we have come up with some “trick s”to deal with this unfavorable situation.First, making full use of library resources is the most common “trick”. Our library has a large collection of books on various subjects and from different countries. We find it very beneficial to do so. The second “trick” is that we exchange our own books. As a saying puts it, “Buying books is not so good as borrowing them”. We tend to spend more time reading books borrowed from other students than our own books. Third, we buy books through co-payment. Since each student pays only a partof the cost, books do not seem to unaffordable. This is a self-deceiving “trick”, of course.Though we have thought of some “tricks”to cope with soaring prices, we sincerely hope that book prices will go down sharply so that every student will find books really affordable。

A new research demonstrates just how dangerous it can be. Brenda Penninx, a gerontologist (老年病学家) in Forest University, North Carolina and her colleagues followed 2, 847 people over the age of 55 both with and without heart disease — for four years in order to trace the effects of depression.(72) In the end, they found that people with major depression were at least three times as likely to die of heart disease as were patients who weren't depressed. Even subjects with mild depression experienced a fatality rate that was 50 percent higher than normal.Brenda Penninx isn't sure exactly what the connection between heart disease and depression is, but since depression can raise stress, and stress triggers an outpouringof the hormone cortisol (荷尔蒙肾上腺皮质素), and this could cause heart rate and blood pressure to rise.Other factors could also play a part: Depressed people are less likely to do physical exercises and eat right than those who do not suffer from the malady. "Depression deserves a lot more attention than it usually gets," Penninx warns. "It's a huge risk factor, so it's really crucial to take care of our emotions."51. Family ViolencePassage T woDuring the Christmas shopping rush in London, the interesting story was reported of a tramp (流浪者) who, apparently though no fault of his own, found himself locked in a well-known chain store late on Christmas Eve. No doubt the store was crowded with last-minute Christmas shoppers and the staff were dead beat and longing to get home. Probably all the proper security checks were made before the store was locked and they left to enjoy the three-day holiday untroubled by customers desperate to get last-minute Christmas presents. However ridiculous that may be, our tramp found himself alone in the store and decided to make the best of it. There was food, drink, bedding and camping equipment, of which he made good use. There must also have been television sets and radios. Though it was not reported if he took advantage of these facilities, when the shop reopened he was discovered in bed with a large number of empty bottles beside him. He seems to have been a man of good humor as indeed tramps very commonly are.Everyone else was enjoying Christmas, so he saw no good reason why he should not do the same. He yielded himself cheerfully, and was taken by the police. Perhaps he had had a better Christmas than usual. He was sent to prison for seven days. Tile judge awarded no compensation (赔偿) to the chain store for the food and drink our tramp had consumed. They had, in his opinion, already received valuable free public ity from the story revealed in the newspaper and on television Perhaps the judge had a good Christmas, too.36. This is the research result of Professor Faulkner, who says that most of our brains are not getting enough exercise and as a result, we are ageing unnecessarily soon.Professor Faulkner wanted to find out why healthy farmers in northern Japan appeared to be losing their ability to think and to reason at a relatively early age, and how the process of ageing could be slowed down.He set about measuring brain volumes of a thousand people of different ages and occupations.Computer technology enabled him to obtain precise measurements of the volume of the front andside sections of the brain, which relate to intelligence and emotion, and determine the human character.Contraction of front and side parts--as cells die off--was observed in some subjects in their thirties, but it was still not evident in some sixty-and seventy-year-olds.Faulkner concluded from his tests that there is a simple way to slow the contraction--using the head. The findings show that contraction of the brain begins sooner in people in the country than in the towns. Those least at risk, says Faulkner, are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors. White-collar workers doing routine work are, however, as likely to have shrinking brains as the farm worker, bus driver and shop assistant.Faulkner's findings show that thinking can prevent the brain from shrinking. Blood must circulate properly in the head to supply the fresh oxygen the brain cells need. "The best way to maintain good blood circulation is through using the brain," he says. "Think hard and engage in conversstion, Don't rely on pocket calculators."41. Professor Faulkner wanted to find out ______.A. how people's brains shrinkB. the way of making people live longerC. the size of certain people's brainsD. why certain people aged sooner than others42. Faulkner's research findings are based on______.A. a survey of farmers in northern JapanB. tests performed on a thousand old peopleC. the study of brain volumes of different peopleD. the latest development of computer technology43. The professor's tests show that ______.A. our brains shrink as we grow oldB. the front section of the brain does not shrinkC. seventy-year-olds have better brains than sixty-year-oldsD. brain contraction may vary among people of the same age44. The underlined word "subjects" in paragraph 5 means ______.A. branches of knowledge studied in a schoolB. something to be consideredC. persons experimented onD. citizens in a country45. According to the passage, which group of people seem to age slower than the others?A. Farmers.B. Lawyers.C. Clerks.D. Part I Reading Comprehension(共20小题,每题2分,共40分)Directions:In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by a number comprehension questions.Read the passage and answer the questions. Then ,mark your answer by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passageHuman feelings are affected by color unconsciously. Manufacturers have discovered by trial and error that sugar sells badly in green wrappings, that blue foods are considered by consumers as tasteless, and the cosmetics should never be packaged in brown. These discoveries have grown into a whole discipline of color psychology. Some of our preferences are clearly psychological. Dark blue is the color of the night sky and therefore associated with calm, while yellow is a day color in association with energy. For primitive men, activity during the day meant hunting and attacking, in which he soon saw as red, the color of blood and hunting and fire. So it was natural that green, the complementary color to red , should be associated with passive defense. Experiments have shown that colors also have a direct psychological effect. People, when exposed to bright red, show an increase in breathing rate, heart beat and blood pressure . Red is exciting. Similar exposure to pure blue has exactly the opposite effect, because it is a calming color. Because red has an implication of excitement, it is chosen as the signal for danger. Some analyses show that a vivid yellow can produce a more basic state of alertness and alarm. So fire engines and ambulances in some advanced countries are now rushing around in bright yellow colors that stop the traffic dead.( ) 1. If people are exposed to bright red, which of the following things does NOT happen?A. They feel afraid.B. They breathe faster.C. Their blood pressure risesD. They hearts beat faster( ) 2. Manufacturers have discovered the secret of colors in marketing .A. by experimenting with different colorsB. by developing the discipline of color psychologyC. by trying not to make mistakesD. by accumulating their various experiences( ) 3. Which of the following is NOT true?A. Our feelings about certain colors are purely psychological.B. Food should never be packaged in brown.C. Sugar sells badly in green wrappings.D. Color probably has an effect on us which we are not conscious of.( ) 4. Our preferences for certain colors are .A. dependent on our characterB. linked with our primitive menC. associated with psychologyD. associated with the time of day( ) 5. The passage is about .A. color and traffic accidentsB. color and manufacturersC. which color might influence human feelingsD. why color affects human emotions and behavior Passage TwoQuestions 6 to 10 are based on the following passageExchange a glance with someone, and then look away. Do you realize that you have made a statement? Hold the glance for a second longer, and you have made a different statement .Hold it for 3 seconds, and the meaninghas changed again .For every social situation, there is a permissible time that you can hold a person‟s gaze without being intimate , rude , or aggressive . If you are on an elevator, what gaze-time are you permitted? To answer this question, consider what you typically do .You very likely give other passengers a quick glance to size them up( 打量) and to assure them that you mean no threat .Since being close to another person signals the possibility of interaction, you need to emit a signal telling others you want to be left alone .So you cut off eye contact, which sociologist Erving Goffman (1963 ) calls “a dimming of the lights”. You look down at the floor, at the indicator lights, anywhere but into another passenger‟s eyes. Should you bread the rule against staring at a stranger on an elevator, you will make the other person exceedingly uncomfortable, and you are likely to feel a bit strange yourself. If you hold eye contacts for more than 3 seconds, what are you telling another person? Much depends on the person and the situation. Of these , only about half a dozen generate the strong, circling winds of 75 miles per hour or more that give them hurricane status, and several usually make their way to the coast .These they cause millions of dollars of damage , and bring death to large numbers of people. The great storms that hit the coast start as innocent circling disturbances hundreds-even thousands-of miles out to sea .As they travel aimlessly over water warmed by the summer sun .they are carried westward by the trade winds. When conditions are just right, warm moist air flows in at the bottom of such a disturbance, moves upward through it and comes out at the top. In the process, the moisture in this warm air produces rain, and with it the heat is converted to energy in the form of strong winds. As the heat increases, the young hurricane begins to swirl in a counterclockwise motion. The average life of a hurricane is only about nine days ,but it contains almost more power than we can imagine. The energy in the heat released by a hurricane‟s rainfal l in a single day would satisfy the entire electrical needs of the Unites States for more than six months. Water, not wind, is the main source of death and destruction in a hurricane. A typical hurricane brings 6to 12 inch downpours resulting in sudden floods . Worst of all is the powerful movement of the sea—mountains of water moving toward the low-pressure hurricane center. The water level rises as much as 15 feet above normal as it moves toward shore.( )16. When is an ordinary tropical storm considered to be a hurricane?A.

go out意思是“灭掉,熄灭”,go off 意思是“离开,去世,消失”,go through 意思是“经历,经受,仔细检查”,go over 意思是“((对……..
The odd sight aroused our curiosity.

Part I Listening Comprehension1. D2.A3.D4. B5. A6. B7. C8. A9.D 10.DS11 prepare S12 spoil S13 purchase S14 UsingS15 immediately S16 available S17. favoritesS18 Above all 19. appearance S20. tastePart II Vocabulary and StructureSection A21. personality 22. Evidently 23. sensitive 24. anxiety 25. favorable 26. original 27. involving 28. incapable 29. imaginable 30. encouraged Section B31.
主句动词使用了虚拟语气could have finished the assignment by now,含义是“你现在本可以完成任务”,因而前面需要一个表示过去的非真实条件句,可以使用if it had not been for。
This room is three times as large as that one. 本句中由于$1000是不可数名词,因此用as much,as much后省略了as $1000。
36. A. 本题考查there be结构的变体。
英文中表示存在,可以使用there be结构,也可以使用There live/ stand/ lie/ exist/ remain等结构。
例如:There stands a big tree behind my house.
so as that 引导目的状语从句,as far as 意为“远到,直到,至于”,as long as 引导条件状语从句,意为“只要……”,as soon as 引导时间状语从句,意为“一……
39. A. 在主语+系动词+形容词+不定式结构中,做主语的名词或代词即可能是不定式动词的逻辑主语(如:I’m glad to meet you.),也可能是不定式动词的逻辑宾语(如:This sentence is easy to understand.)。
41. D. 本题考查常见短语be used to…
在as引导的非限制性定语从句中,as可代指整个主句,在从句中做主语、宾语和表语(如:He won the game, as we had expected.)。
As has been pointed out, this theory is not always correct.44.
Whoever comes will be welcomed.
I went to the bookstore before going back home.(我去了趟书店,然后回家了。
该种从句的构成为:It be + 表示判断的形容词+ that ...(should)do ...。
用于该句型的常见形容词有:necessary, good, important, right, wrong, better, natural, proper, funny, strange, surprising等.。
48. B. have sb./sth.do sth.与have sb./sth.doing sth.
另外,考生需注意so 和such的区别,so 表示“如此、这么”时,用来修饰形容词或副词,例如so heavy a desk ;such表示“如此、这么”时,用来修饰名词,例如such a heavy desk,里面a heavy desk是一个整体,这个整体是名词性的。
和so一样,as,too也可以形成so/as/too+形容词+冠词+名词的结构。
对过去的事情表示推测,则要使用must/can’t have done。
例如:My watch need fixing.
Part III Reading ComprehensionTask 1
51. D)原因题。
文章首段尾句用“in order to trace the effects of depression”表明了这次试验的目的。
52. B)排除题。
答案可从第三段的“but since depression can raise stress…”
从malady一词出现的句子可以看出those who do not suffer from the malady 和depressed people 存在对比,因此可以判断those who do not suffer from the malady指没患抑郁症的人。
54. A)推理题。
