在热奈特看来,叙事时间可以分为三个方面:时序、时长和频率。
任何事情的发生都有其顺序,就是按时间顺序写的故事。
但是在写故事时,可以按照时间顺序来写,也可以采用错位叙述。
福克纳认为时间的发展不是线性的,过去、现在和将来都包含在同一时刻。
[1]在《献给爱米丽的玫瑰花》里,福克纳故意打乱时间顺序,使之混乱无序,就像一个循环:现在-过去-现在,让整个故事充满晦涩、陌生。

时间跨度或持续(duration)主要体现在作者对故事情节的细叙和略叙上,作者可以根据故事情节的发展和需要对故事的某一部分加以浓墨重彩(acceleration),也可以一笔带过或是轻描淡写(deccleration)。
在《献给艾米莉的玫瑰花》中,作者通过对话的形式对艾米莉拒绝纳税的情节进行了细说,而这一段对话的实在时间可能只有几秒钟,就整个小说的时间跨度来说,作者花了长于现实时间很多倍的时间来描写艾米莉与税务局官员间的对话,从而进一步加强了艾米莉的倔强和蛮不讲理。

然而在本文中笔者并不打算详细地陈列之所以如此的原因。
鉴于浸透于《献给爱米丽的玫瑰》中的浓重的时间意识,本文试图以此为契机,去发掘和体味时间在小说艺术、文本自身的布局、作家观念等各个层面的体现及成因。
《献给爱米丽的玫瑰》讲述的是一个出身于美国旧南方没落贵族的女人在阴魂不散的父权压制和清教传统控制的杰弗逊社会里不能过上普通女人的爱情婚姻生活的悲惨的爱情故事。

本文拟再从叙事学角度入手,研究叙述者的真实身份,探讨作品中叙述顺序和事件顺序之间的倒错,挖掘作者在叙述者叙事过程中隐藏的内在统一线索,探寻埃米莉人生的真正可悲之处。
一、叙述者的真实面目苏珊·兰瑟在《虚构的权威:女性作家与叙述声音》中把叙述声音分为“作者型叙述声音”、“个人叙述声音”和“集体叙述声音”。
按照兰瑟的方法,《玫瑰》中“我们”的叙述应归为共言形式的“集体型叙述声音”,即“我们”指涉的是一个集体,是一群人。
那么“我们”是否如大多数评论者所认定的那样,代表了小说中那个美国南方城镇(杰斐逊)的全体居民?这样一个似乎昭然若揭的问题,却引起不少争议,因为叙述者的身份远比人们想象的要复杂。
“我们”到底指谁?故事一开始“我们”就进入回忆:“埃米莉·格里尔森小姐过世了,我们全镇的人都去送丧。

素材越复杂,错时往往会加剧。
二、小说中的时序错乱《献给爱米丽的一朵玫瑰花》中叙事顺序颠倒错乱,没有按照事件发生的时间顺序安排小说的情节,而是将叙述者回忆的往事与当前事件所发生的联系作为时间引线来编排全文。

Narrative Structure
