Callisto and GanymedeFrom 1996 to 1999, the Galileo spacecraft passed through the Jovian system, providing much information about Jupiter's satellites. Callisto, the outermost of Jupiter's four largest satellites, orbits the planet in seventeen days at a distance from Jupiter of two million kilometers. Like our own Moon. Callisto rotates in the same period as it revolves, so it always keeps the same face toward Jupiter. Its noontime surface temperature is only about -140°C, so water ice is stable on its surface year-round. Callisto has a diameter of 4.820 kilometers, almost the same as that of Mercury. Its mass is only one-third as great, which means its density must be only one-third as great as well. This tells us that Callisto has far less of the rocky metallic materials found in the inner planets and must instead be an icy body through much of its interior.Callisto has not fully differentiated, meaning separated into layers of different density materials. Astronomers can tell that it lacks a dense core from the details of its gravitational pull on the Galileo spacecraft during several very close flybys. This fact surprised scientists, who expected that all the big icy moons would be differentiated. It is much easier for an icy body to differentiate than for a rocky one, since the melting temperature of ice is so low. Only a little heating will soften the ice and get the process started, allowing the rock and metal to sink to the center and the slushy ice to float to the surface. Y et Callisto seems to have frozen solid before the process of differentiation was complete.Like our Moon's highlands, the surface of Callisto is covered with impact craters. The survival of these craters tells us that an icy object can form and retain impact craters m its surface. In thinking of ice so far from the Sun, it is important not to judge its behavior from that of the much warmer ice we know on Earth; at the temperatures of the outer solar system, ice on the surface is nearly as hard as rock, and behaves similarly. Ice on Callisto does not deform or flow like ice in glaciers on Earth. Callisto is unique among the planet-sized objects of the solar system in its absence of interior forces to drive geological evolution. The satellite was born dead and has remained geologically dead for more than four billion years.Ganymede, another of Jupiter's satellites and the largest in our solar system, is also cratered, but less so than Callisto. About one-quarter of its surface seems to be as old and heavily cratered; the rest formed more recently, as we can tell by the sparse covering of impact craters as well as the relative freshness of the craters. Ganymede is a differentiated world, like the terrestrial planets. Measurements of its gravity field tell us that the rock and metal sank to form a core about the size of our Moon, with a mantle and crust of ice floating above it. In addition, the Galileo spacecraft discovered that Ganymede has a magnetic field, the signature of a partially molten interior. Ganymede is not a dead world, but rather a place of continuing geological activity powered by an internal heat source. Much of its surface may be as young as half a billion years. The younger terrain is the result of tectonic and volcanic forces Some features formed when the crust cracked, flooding many of the craters with water from the interior. Extensive mountain ranges were formed from compression of the crust, forming long ridges with parallel valleys spaced one to two kilometers apart. In some places older impact craters were split and pulled apart. There are even indications of large-scale crustal movements that are similar to the plate tectonics of Earth. Why is Ganymede different from Callisto? Possibly the small difference in size and internal heating between the two led to this divergence in their evolution. But more likely the gravity of Jupiter is to blame for Ganymede's continuing geological activity. Ganymede is close enough to Jupiter that tidal forces from the giant planet may have episodically heated its interior and triggered major convulsions on its crust.paragraph 1From 1996 to 1999, the Galileo spacecraft passed through the Jovian system, providing much information about Jupiter's satellites. It has the same mass and diameter as the planet MercuryD. It completes one rotation every seventeen days.2. According to paragraph 1, how do scientists know that Callisto is made up largely of ice?A. A sample of its interior was taken by the Galileo spacecraft in the late 1990sB. It has too low a density to contain much rocky metallic materialC. With a noontime surface temperature of only about .140° C. the ice on it never meltsD. All of the bodies in the Jovian system are icy, because they are so far from the Sun.paragraph 2Callisto has not fully differentiated, meaning separated into layers of different density materials. To support the claim that all of the big icy moons are differentiatedB. To suggest that Callisto may be a rocky body rather than an icy oneC. To explain why scientists expected Callisto to be differentiatedD. To refute the claim that Callisto could not differentiate because it was frozen solid4.All of the following questions are answered in paragraph 2 EXCEPT:A.Why was Callisto frozen solid before differentiation was complete?B.What allows the process of differentiation to get started?C. Why is it easier for an icy body to differentiate than a rocky one?D. Which of the sentences below best expresses the essential information in the highlighted sentence in the passage? Incorrect choices change the meaning in important ways or leave out essential information.A. It should not be assumed that surface ice has the same characteristics wherever it is foundB. Surface ice and rock are much more similar in temperature in the outer solar system than they are on Earth.C. The further away surface ice is from the Sun, the more its temperature differs from that of the warmer ice on EarthD. In the cold of the outer solar system, surface ice is so hard it behaves more like rock than like the warmer ice on Earth6.According to paragraph 3, how is Callisto different from all other planet-sized objects in the solar system?A. It can form and retain impact craters on its icy surfaceB. It has ice glaciers that do not flow or deform.C. It has never had the interior forces required for geological evolution.D. The occupants of the building can see out, but birds and others cannot see in. If birds cannot see through a window, theywill understand that the glass forms a solid barrier and will not try to fly through it.Colorful DesignsA second solution is to paint colorful lines or other designs on regular window glass. For example, a window could have a design of thin stripes painted over the glass. People would still be able to see through the openings in the design where there is no paint, while birds would see the stripes and thus avoid trying to fly through the glass. Architects can be encouraged to include colorful painted patterns on glass as part of the general design of buildings.Magnetic FieldThe third solution is to create an artificial magnetic field to guide birds away from buildings. When it comes to the question that whether a worker like to have different types of tasks a day or to do some similar task for the whole day, there is always some heat debates among the public. Some people may claim that doing different types of works is more attractive because they are less likely to get tired off if they could switch their focus for one task to another. However, as for me, I would like to only focus on similar tasks for the all day. TPO42综合写作听力原文:

托福TPO42综合写作听力原文文本:Professor: None of the solutions you've read about will effectively stop birds from getting injured.First, replacing regular glass with one-way glass. Well, the problem with one-way glass is that to the bird on the outside, a one-way glass surface reflects just like a mirror, and a surface that reflects like a mirror is just as bad as regular glass for birds because birds don't understand the mirrors. If they see a reflection of the sky in a mirror or of a tree in a mirror, they'd think the reflection is the sky or is the tree. And they'll fly right into them. The second solution, painting colorful patterns like stripes on regular glass, also has problems. As the reading said, these designs include openings so people inside the buildings can see out, but birds will perceive these unpainted openings as open holes. And if birds think that they are seeing holes, they'll try to fly right through them. To prevent birds from doing this, the unpainted spaces in a window would have to be extremely small, but that would then make the rooms of the buildings too dark for the people inside them. The third solution, creating an artificial magnetic field, won't work very well either. While it's true that birds use Earth's magnetic field to help them navigate, they use this only when they are travelling very long distances. For example, if a bird is migrating from a cold country to a warm one before winter, it will use its magnetic sense to figure out which way it should fly. But this ability isn't used to go over short distances, such as going from one side of the city to another. For short trips, birds use their eyes and the brightness of light to determine where to go. So magnetic signals from buildings won't have much effect.。

I want to see you!_ turned a brand new page in human history.By taking advantage of his creativity and goingthrough numerous endeavors, Bell was finally granted the patent as a proof of his epoch-making contributions to the scientific field. But for his ability to be creative, breakthroughs would not have been made.In the modern world, similar evidence could also be traced.Steve Jobs, co- founder and former CEO of Apple, shocked the world with his creative electronic products whose superior functions and qualities can never be matched. In the second place,to combat challenges from the electronic brains in the information age, people should make greater efforts to become creative. The advancement in the IT industry has gradually made human brains lazier and slower than ever.More and more people rely too much on computers and electronic tools, which weakens their ability to think and act imaginatively. The lack of creativity and the unwillingness to use the brain present a major threat to human domination in such an advanced world.Thereafter, the significance of human creativity can never be neglected. At last, knowledge gained through study paves the way for people to be creative during the endeavor toward brilliantsuccess.Elbert Einstein was a most recognized theoretical physicist who developed the theory of general relativity. His theory brought up a revolution in physics. For this achievement,Einstein is often regarded as the father of modern physics. He received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics.Needless to say, his accomplishment owed much to his mastery of the basic knowledge. In conclusion, to achieve success in life, people have to be well-prepared.Not only a good command of knowledge is required, the ability to be creative has become increasingly important than before. On all account, the world is destined to be dominated through the irreplaceable power of human brains.tpo42独立写作优秀范文第3篇I have just received an email from my former classmate at college telling me that she plans to move to my city.Delighted by the good news, I couldnt help telling her a great deal about this city in my reply.Indeed, she ought to be well prepared before arriving here. With this purpose in mind, I have tried to figure out her preferences and thought of things to tell her about living in this place.Hopefully these ideas can be useful references for her.First of all, its prosperous commercial atmosphere might be appealing to my friend, who is a passionate shopper.Thedowntown area is made up of several grand-scale shopping districts.Wandering on the streets there, people can visit numerous interesting stores with unique characteristics.Shopping there can be an enjoyable eXperience for her.During weekends, shops selling overseas brand-name products, fashionable clothing, books and other specialties offer sharp discounts.Customers are able to make good purchases at more reasonable prices. There are also manysupermarkets situated in different parts of the city. Thus, local citizens do not have to travel far to shop for daily necessities. In a word, this place is a paradise for shopping.Secondly, citizens are blessed with more job opportunities in my city. Its huge market potential has attracted many international investors to establish companies and branches here. With the construction of an advanced economic development zone,an increasing number of enterprises have formed here.Among them, many are multi-national corporations which boast better working facilities and superior employee welfare.Obviously, they have a high demand for talented workers who are qualified t o fill their positions.Facing so many opportunities, my friend would have no difficulty in finding a satisfactory position. However, I have to remind my friend of some cruel realities she is going to face. The traffic jams during rush hours constitutes a major problem for anyone who works in this city.On weekdays, people can be stuck in long queues of waiting cars and buses on the major streets. As a result, much time can be wasted in the early morning or lateafternoon.Meanwhile, because of the release of industrial gases, air pollution has become another hazard to local citizens.Dirty air poses a threat to peoples health. Therefore, nothing can ever be totally satisfactory.Wherever people choose to live, merits and defects coeXist. As long as some essential knowledge is gained beforehand, it is easier for newarrivals to find and grow accustomed to a new place.By presenting all the favorable points and negative conditions about this city, I believe my friend will adapt to the change of this living environment soon.tpo42独立写作优秀范文第4篇According to data analyses released by the United Nations, the average life span of the worlds population has been prolonged in recent years. In other words, people are living longer than before. When considering the major causes of this phenomenon, we may find some clues in current global situationand in our daily lives. From my standpoint, world peace, enhanced living standards and advanced medicine are three of the most important reasons. At present, people from most countries are living in peace. With the improvement of multilateral relations among different nations, the chances of another world war have become slimmer than ever.Despite occasional conflicts in some regions, general trends indicate that the world today has become more and more harmonious.Global attention has been diverted from fighting in wars to developing national and international economies.Tracing back to the time of wars, many ordinary citizens lost their lives at an early age.It was eXtremely difficult for people to live long in security.By contrast, people now do not have tolive in danger. The higher degree of peace enables people to live longer.Secondly, global living standards have been considerably enhanced, which provide superior conditions for people to live longer. Thanks to ample supplies of food and other daily necessities, most modern citizens do not have to suffer fromstarvation and cold weather like their ancestors. In addition to material enjoyment, people are also endowed with more spiritual comfort nowadays, which is an indicator ofquality life.Diversified means of recreation have dramatically improved peoples state of mind. From a certain angle, staying in a happy mood is an effective way to stay healthy.Last but not least, people have benefited tremendously from the advancement of modern medicine. In the past, running a fever or having a cough were considered serious problems. In order to recover, patients had to see a doctor or else their lives might be at stake.Today, these common illnesses can be cured easily by taking pills, often without a doctors prescription.Furthermore, owing to constant breakthroughs in medical research, diseases which used tobe incurable are now treated successfully.Meanwhile, with advanced technical support, the chances of successful surgical operations have become higher. In other words, more lives are being saved by advanced medicine. This is another main contributor to peoples longer lifespan.Human beings are blessed with more agreeable conditions that allow them to live better than before. In addition to the comparatively more peaceful social environment, the unprecedented advancements in economy and medicine also play a critical role in improving quality of life.Judging from all these points, we may see why people are living longer now.第11页共11页。

You can be more actively involved, get more attention and support. It's just a betterway to learn.Okay. But there is that survey.I don't know what students they asked, but I know a lot of people who feel just the opposite. Imean, what does experience mean anyway? What's on your mind?I'm trying to decide what to do about the paper for my history class. A big part of the assignmentis working with original historical documents.Originals.Yeah. You know, our library has all kinds of records and books dating back hundreds of years.Amazing! So is there a problem?Uh-huh. They are old newspapers and they were in pretty bad shape, so the library sent them out forrepairs, like, restoration work.So you can't use them.No. They say they won't be available for at least another two weeks. So I can't work on my paper.Well, can you change what you are writing about? You know, choose a topic that doesn't involvethose documents.I could. There are plenty of historical topics. Well, scientistsgenerally agree that the extinction of various animal and plant species is one very likely effect. This has happened in the past. An example is, is the disappearance, 35,000 years ago, of a giantAustralian bird, called the thunderbird. Now, now, these birds were so big they couldn't fly. But as I was saying, many scientists areconvinced that it was a change in climate that caused this species to become extinct. Here's theevidence. Here's why scientists think it was a climate change.Researchers have discovered an enormous number of 35,OOO-year-old thunderbird bones, alltogether in one spot. The bones were found near an ancient, dried-up lake. Now, it's really rare tofind so many bones from the same species in one place, but there it is. You have all these35,000-year-old thunder bird bones all together near this dried- up lake. So what's theexplanation?Well, many scientists believe that a change in the Australian climate may be behind this. Theirhypothesis is, they think that during a very long, dry period, when there was no rainfall, the birdsmay have flocked together at this lake. You see, during a drought, animals tend to gravitatetowards the last few remaining water sources. But then if it still doesn't rain, if the drought laststoo long, the water source may dry up too. And…and if that happens, the anim als that havegathered there…well…well...well...they die.Scientists think, this ancient lake, where they found the bones, was one of the last remainingsources of freshwater during the drought. So that's where all these birds gathered. They survivedthere for a time, but eventually the lake dried up. And well...that was it. By the time thedrought ended, the species was extinct.。

Some argue that workers would gain more satisfaction from doing different types of tasks while others hold the opposite idea that to do the same task leads them to be happier. In fact, it is hard to judge and up to the context of the work.Obviously, the majority of people are reluctant to repeat their action mechanically, because they cannot endure the tediousness created by the same work. Trying to do different types of tasks is beneficial for them to keep the motivation of job and is easy to satisfy themselves with achieving success in varied domains. According to a university administrator, the decision was prompted by a steady decline in enrollments in evening classes. "Evening classes are just too small," the administrator said. When asked to explain the decline in enrollments, the administrator pointed to the fact that most evening classes are taught by teaching assistants, who are usually graduate students. 托福TPO42口语Task4阅读文本: Habituation Habituation is a form of learning that is quite common among animals. When an animal experiences a situation for the first time, particularly one it considers threatening, it may instinctively respond by running away or by warning other members of its community with alarm calls. Normally, it responds this way each time the situation occurs. However, if through continuous and prolonged exposure the animal learns that the situation is harmless, the behavior gradually diminishes. Ultimately, it will stop responding to the situation altogether. Thus, through habituation a natural or instinctive behavior gradually changes. 托福TPO42口语Task4听力文本: Now listen to part of a lecture in a biology class. To reinforce the theory, the professor gave an example in his speech. That is, assume prairie dogs live in an area where human beings frequently come and go. The first time the animals see a person, they’d react by barking like a dog and jumping up and down instinctively to warn or alert other prairie dogs nearby, they’d do the same to the animal that preys on them, such as a snake or a hawk. This kind of reaction is out of their fear. And they’d keep an eye on the human beings until these possible threatening individuals are gone. However, if people pass through the area day by day without hurting them, then the prairie dogs will gradually stop barking and jumping up and down when they see a person passing through the area, they’d stop reacting to humans as a threat. In the lecture, the speaker refutes the opinion that responsible businesses can use some solutions to prevent birds from getting injuries. And he casts the doubts on the passage from three aspects.我觉得这么说还是会产生歧义。

最好说明白,阅读文章说了3个观点,听力说了3个观点来反驳。

The reading material gives three solutions from responsible businesses to prevent flying bird getting injured, whereas the speaker refutes the effectiveness of those solutions one by one.First of all, the speaker states that the one-way mirror is justthe same as the clear regular mirror in birds' vision. Even though the one-way mirror cannot allow birds outside to see in, itcan reflect things, such as sky and trees. Birds will see them as real trees and true sky, and try to fly through them, which would inevitably lead them to get hurt. Thus, the mirror which is transports in only one side is not looked as a boundary for birds.(这句话什么意思呢)总结的时候一步到位:Thus, this kind of mirror can not be a very effective solution for those companies to help the birds.Secondly, the speaker suggests that painting some designs on common window glass is not able to solve the problem as well. For birds, the colorful patterns like stripes on the window seemlike holes, through which the birds would try to fly. The only solution is to make the space very small, which would, on the other hand, darken the room inside the building.Thirdly, according to the listening material, creating a magnetic field to guide bird away from avoiding buildings is also impossible to work very well, since birds only use magnetic field when traveling for long distance, just like migrating. But for short trips, they just depend on their eyes and brightness of light for direction.。

TPO42综合写作

TPO42综合写作Three solutions are proposed in the reading passage to prevent injuries caused by glass used to birds in the buildings. However, the professor in the lecture contradicts all of them.First of all, the author argues that the regular, clear glass can be replaced by one-way glass, so that the birds can not see through from outside and thus will not fly through the glass window. By contrast, the professor refutes this solution by claiming that the one-way glass actually works as a mirror when seen from outside, whose impact will be as bad as the regular glass because birds do not understand the functions of mirror, on whose surface trees and the sky will be reflected, so birds will think it is the same as the natural world.Second, the author states that architects can paint colorful lines and designs on regular glass window, and when birds see the stripes from outside, they will avoid flying through the window. On the contrary, the professor maintains that even with colorful designs there will be unpainted openings on the window looking just like open holes, so birds may still fly through those holes. In order to prevent it from happening, the unpainted spaces must be small enough. But in this case, the room will be too dark.Third, the reading proposes that humans can install artificial magnetic field on building to help birds navigate away from buildings. However, the professor insists that birds actually use magnetic signals to navigate only when they migrate a long way such as when they migrate from cold areas to warm areas during spring. But if they are on a short trip, they would rely on their eyes to navigate. So the magnetic device will not be effective, either.。

Glass is a favored building material for modern architecture, yet it is also very dangerous for wild birds. Because they often cannot distinguish between glass and open air, millions of birds are harmed every year when they try to fly through glass windows. There are, however, several solutions that responsible businesses can use to prevent injuries to birds.One-Way GlassOne solution is to replace the regular, clear glass with one-way glass that is transparent in only one direction. The occupants of the building can see out, but birds and others cannot see in. If birds cannot see through a window, they will understand that the glass forms a solid barrier and will not try to fly through it.Colorful DesignsA second solution is to paint colorful lines or other designs on regular window glass. Humans use an instrument called a magnetic compass to determine directions—either north, south, east, or west. Bird research has shown that birds have a natural ability to sense Earth’s magnetic fields; this ability works just like a compass, and it helps birds navigate in the right direction when they fly. A building in a bird flight path can be equipped with powerful electromagnets that emit magnetic signals that steer birds in a direction away from the building. Now liste n to part of a lecture on the topic you’ve just read about.None of the solutions you’ve read about will effectively stop birds from getting injured.First, replacing regular glass with one-way glass. Well, the problem with one-way glass is that to the bird on the outside, a one-way glass surface reflects just like a mirror. And a surface that reflects like a mirror is just as bad as regular glass for birds because birds don’t understand mirrors. If they see a reflection of the sky in a mirror or of a tree in the mirror, they think the reflection is the sky or is the tree and they’ll fly right into them. The second solution, painting colorful patterns like stripes on regular glass, also has problems. As the reading said, these designs include openings so people inside the buildings can see out. But birds will perceive these unpainted openings as open holes. And if birds think they’re seeing holes, they will try to fly right through them. To prevent birds from doing this, the unpainted spaces in the window would have to be extremely small. But that would then make the rooms of the buildings too dark for the people inside them. The third solution, creating an artificial magnetic field, won’t work very well, either. While it’s true that birds use Earth’s magn etic field to help them navigate, they use this only when they’re traveling very long distances. For example, if a bird is migrating from a cold country to a warm one during winter, it will use its magnetic sense to figure out which way it should fly. But this ability isn’t used to go over short distances such as going from one side to the city to another. For short trips, birds use their eyes and the brightness of light to determine where to go so magnetic signals from buildings won’t have much effect.Summarize the points made in the lecture. There are several solutions to solve the problem that birds are harmed when they try to fly through glass windows since they often cannot distinguish between the glass of modern buildings and the open air.2. The first solution is to replace the regular and clear glass with one-way transparent one, which means people who live in the buildings can see out while birds cannot see through in.3. The second solution is to paint colorful lines, openings or other designs on regular window glass. Thus people could see through by the place without special design on the glass windows while birds could see the special parts on that.4. The third solution is to create an artificial magnetic field to guide birds away from buildings with transparent glass windows since birds have a natural ability to sense that.听力要点概括(Main points of the lecture)1. All above solutions will not effectively stop birds from getting injured.2. First, one-way transparent glass will reflect just like a mirror. It will hurt the birds all the same because the mirror’s reflection of the sky or a tree will mislead them as well.3. Second, birds will still try to fly through the unpainted opening parts on glass windows as they regard them as open holes. To avoid this, the unpainted spaces should be small enough while it will affect the light take-in of the room.4. Although birds could sense the magnetic field to navigate, but the ability is only limited to the situation when they travelling very long. They still depend on their eyes and light in short trips such as the distance between cities.。
