He’s also told me time and time again he wished he’d studied for some profession instead of going into business;

Today we go on a different kind of adventure –Jackson’s life of parenting his offspring. David, as a parent of an 11 and a 14-year-old, what is the most interesting issue you are dealing with right now?M: It’s easy to focus on the challenges.2) But so far, I find these ages to be kind of wonderful. They are independent, and they have their own curiosities and o bsessions. You can talk to them about fairly sophisticated subject matter such as politics.W: Yes, that does sound refreshing compared with talking to younger children. Do they ask you to proofread their essays? M: Certainly. With writing they do.3) I really just try to be encouraging. I think at this age, editorial guidance is less important than encouragement.W: Are there books that you think are important that your children read and that all children read?M: My general thought is to read widely and to incorporate a love for reading. Learning to love to read, I think, is the optimal thing, because it gives you a skill you can take anywhere.W: So you’re not too concerned like some parents with the content they’re reading. I know I have some worries about that.M: Yeah. Read what you like. If a child loves graphic novels or comic books, whatever it is that is turning them on to read and turning on their imagination.W: 4) I feel that children’s tastes in books change as they reach adolescence. I know that mine certainly did when I was a teenager. What do you think? M: I think it’s especially important as they get older to read subject matter that will open their eyes to the world and people. So, I think both fiction and nonfiction are really important, because they give you the power to begin to perceive the world through the lives of others.Questions 1 to 4 are based on the conversation you have just heard.1. What do we learn about David Jackson from the conversation?2. What does the man think of young teenagers?3. How does the man help his kids with their essays?4. Some of our research is to do with the likely impacts of climate change and all of the associated risks。
W: And how strong is the evidence that climate change is happening that it‘s really something we need to be worried about。
M: Well most of the science of climate change particularly that to do with global warming is simply fact。

That means most schools must obey a federal law known as Title Nine. (9) It bars discrimination on the basis of sex at any educational institution that receives federal money. An exception is made for admissions at private undergraduate schools. For others, Title Nine covers “any education program or activity”receiving federal financial assistance. The full name is Title Nine of the Education Amendments of 1972. (10) A lot of Americans may be surprised to know that it was written without saying anything directly about sports. Yet that is where its effects are best known, especially at the high school level. After Title Nine became the law, the number of girls who joined high school sports teams sharply increased. (11)Research has linked participation in sports to positive effects like better self-image and higher grades. But are these a direct result? Two recent studies suggest that the answer is “yes.” They offer long-term evidence that it can lead to improvements in education, work and health. One researcher, Betsey Stevenson, compared states, looking at differences in high school sports participation and in women’s education. For each ten percentage point increase in sports participation, she found a one point increase in female college attendance. The other researcher, Robert, looked at physical health. He found that those who came after Title Nine had a seven percent lower risk of obesity 20 to 25 years later. Nicole is associate director of the Tucker Center for Research on Girls and Women in Sport at the University of Minnesota. (12) She says the new studies are important because they show trends over time. Still, far more boys than girls join sports teams nearly 40 years after Title Nine gave girls a chance to level the playing field. Questions 9 to 12 are based on the passage you have just heard. 9. What can we learn about Title Nine? 10. Why are people surprised at Title Nine? 11. What do the researches find according to the passage? 12. Why are the new studies important according to Nicole?9.A.It guarantees federal investment in schools.B.It is a universal law that applies to every university.C.It stops gender discrimination in many schools.D.It helps to save federal money on education programs. 10.A.Title Nine makes girls join in sports programs.B.Title Nine has a very good effect on sports.C.Title Nine is very effective in high schools.D.Title Nine is well obeyed by high schools.11.A.Participation in sports is relevant to positive effects.B.Participation in sports increases female college attendance.C.Participation in sports prevents obesity among adults.D.The results vary among different states and ages. 12.A.They give girls a chance to level the playing field.B.They reveal that Title Nine is as effective as thought.C.Far more boys than girls join sports teams.D.They show the trend of girls’ participation in sports. Many children first learn the value of money by receiving an allowance. The purpose is to let children learn from experience at an age when financial mistakes are not very costly. The amount of money that parents give to their children to spend as they wish differs from family to family. (13)In any case, parents should make clear what the child expects to pay for with the money. At first, young children may spend all of their allowance soon after they receive it. If they do this, they will learn the hard way that spending must be done within a budget. Parents are usually advised not to offer more money until the next allowance. Many experts in child-rearing say it is not a good idea to pay your child for work around home. These jobs are a normal part of family life. (14) Paying children to do extra work around the house, however, can be useful. It can even provide an understanding of how a business works. Allowances give children a chance to experience the three things they can do with money. They can share it in the form of gifts or giving to a good cause. They can spend it by buying things they want, or they can save it. (15)Saving helps children understand that costly goals require sacrifice: You have to cut costs and plan for the future. Requiring children to save part of their allowance can also open the door to future saving and investing. Questions 13 to 15 are based on the passage you have just heard. 13. What should parents do when giving children an allowance? 14. Why is paying children for extra work useful according to the passage? 15. What may children benefit from saving their allowance?13.A.Set a limit to money spent each day by children.B.Make sure children don’t spend it at once.C.Learn about what children want with the money.D.Teach children to make a budget from their experience.14.A.Children can learn how a business works in social life.B.Children may understand what a normal family life is.C.Children may learn to save money rather than spend it.D.Children can’t expect another allowance in a short time. 15.A.They will be more careful in buying presents.B.They will learn how to budget and invest in the future.C.They will be more likely to set goals for their life.D.They will know how to bargain when doing business. Most people have a general interest in philosophy. Plus, it may surprise you how many people have taken a philosophy class or read some philosophy books. Most people at least have some basic knowledge about well-known philosophers and their ideas. (16) Nonetheless, remember when talking in a general setting to avoid getting too technical. For example, avoid the jargon that mostly only philosophers use. Also, do not cite specific philosophers or books too much, as outside of philosophy-focused academia people may not know much about such topics. (17) You can ensure not to exclude anybody by keeping the discussion focused on the ideas and opinions of only the people involved. Tell others what you think about certain philosophical topics, and ask them what they think about those topics. Ask them philosophical questions, such as “What do you think is the meaning of life?”You will get people to talk philosophy more often if they enjoy it and feel comfortable. For that reason, avoid talking down to anyone or talking to them in a condescending or patronizing tone. Create a comfortable atmosphere for others to put forward their ideas. (18)You may have the desire to try to show off. However, doing that would just make others not want to discuss philosophy with you. Do not try to impress people by purposely talking about topics they do not know well. Do not try to impress them with your knowledge of people, books, or facts that they do not know. Do not use big words that they do not understand (and that you probably barely understand) to try and impress them. You will just make them feel bad, and make yourself look arrogant, neither of which will foster quality discussion. Just speak your mind in a way that the others will understand best. (19)Also, avoid rambling. When telling others your philosophical thoughts you can easily just ramble on and on, which will bore others. Instead, sum up your thoughts in quicker, simpler statements, and then give the other person a chance to talk. The normal etiquette and tricks of conversation also apply. Others will judge you and the conversation based on your listening skills more than your speaking skills. Listen intently to what others say, and ask them questions about it, so they know you listened. Additionally, asking questions will keep the conversation going on. To spark further conversation, ask open-ended questions. Whatever you do, good luck and have fun! Questions 16 to 19 are based on the recording you have just heard. 16. What should we do to avoid getting too technical when talking philosophy in a general setting? 17. What is the benefit of keeping the discussion focused on the people involved? 18. What may happen if you show off your philosophical knowledge? 19. What should you do to avoid rambling?16.A.Avoid the jargon that mostly only philosophers use.B.Cite specific philosophers as much as possible.C.Talk about philosophy books as much as possible.D.Discuss the philosophy classes you have attended. 17.A.Everybody will feel centered.B.Nobody will get bored.C.Nobody will be excluded.D.Everybody will talk a lot. 18.A.Others may follow your step.B.Others may not understand you.C.Others will lose interest in philosophy.D.Others will not discuss philosophy with you. 19.A.Explain enough about what we thought.B.Sum up our thoughts and let others talk.C.Let others talk first and we give comments.D.Ask open-ended questions to your listeners. Good morning, everyone. First, I’d like to ask you a question. Areyou happy? Life is a constant struggle. We look for happiness without knowing what actually makes us happy. We are busy doing things that distract us from the truth, though it doesn’t change the situation. Stop hiding. Look in the mirror and ask yourself, “Are you truly happy?” If your answer is “no,” (20) then you probably need to change something in your lifestyle. Even the smallest thing can make a huge difference in how you feel. Who knows, maybe that little change will make you the happiest person in the world. You never know until you try. Choose one of these little changes that will make you happier, and make sure you make that change as soon as possible. If you are one of those who earn a lot but don’t know what to do with those bucks, give others. I know what you’re thinking, “I work hard each day and now I should give my money away.” Yup, you should if you want to feel happier. Believe it or not, giving makes us feel happy. Try once and you won’t stop. Besides, you don’t give money for entertainment. You help someone in need. (21)If you don’t have money, offer your help without waiting for anything in return. Now that the fall season is here, why not connect with nature? Regardless of how successful you are, your soul strives to be closer to nature. A 20-minute walk in the park or a day spent near the forest, mountain or ocean is a simple way to become closer to nature. You’ll feel that invisible power that nature has and you’ll start feeling much happier, truly happier. Money provides temporary happiness, while nature brings happiness into your life for good. Get rid of the habit of saying negative things about yourself and people around you. This way, you spread negativity that affects people’s lives. Say nothing negative today, tomorrow, for a week, for a month and see how happy you and people around you will become. Spread positivity and happiness will find you itself. (22) You have everything you want in life but all those opinions, rumors and gossips prevent you from being truly happy. Just stop caring about what others say and do, even if others are people you love. No matter what you do, there are people who will always rate you, dislike you, and try to break you. Stay strong. Listen to yourself, not to their opinions. It’s your life. Do what your heart tells you to do. Questions 20 to 22 are based on the recording you have just heard. 20. What does the speaker suggest unhappy people do? 21. How can poor people become happy?22. What do we know about the people who have everything they want in life?20.A.Look in the mirror and do the self-talk.B.Get well prepared before making any change.C.Make a little changes in their lifestyle.D.Change anything that makes them unhappy. 21.A.Help others for nothing in return.B.Save money to help others.C.Try to make more money.D.Get help from the rich ones. 22.A.They care too much about people they love.B.They are troubled by what others say.C.They are more easily to be rated by others.D.They tend to be the object of envy. Do you have cancer? Whether you’ve just been diagnosed or whether you’re in the middle of treatments, you’re probably in need for some emotional help. And writing poetry can provide that help, or at least some of it. Sure, at first glance that may seem like an absurd proposition, especially if you’re not yet a writer, but you may be surprised by the benefits you’ll reap if you give writing cancer poems a try. There are a number of reasons why writing, especially writing poetry, can help people cope as they go through difficult times. And being diagnosed with cancer and going through treatments most definitely qualifies as a difficult time. Here are two of the reasons. (23)The first reason why writing helps someone who is going through cancer treatments is that the simple process of writing helps relieve stress. This has been tested in actual clinical studies, so it’s not just my own anecdotal evidence that supports it. In order to be helpful, the writing doesn’t have to be particularly “good,” though you may be surprised by what you’re able to create once you actually take pen in hand and start writing or once you start hitting the keyboard of your laptop. And while the title of this article mentions cancer poems, you don’t have to write poetry to get the benefit. Simple journaling will work just fine. But poems do offer extra benefits. Second, writing poetry helps express painful emotions. Whether you’re doing journaling or you’re going straight to poetry, you may find that experimenting with poetry is particularly helpful for expressing painful emotions. (24) After all, a lot of poetry, is being written by anguished teenagers as they go through the pain of unrequited love. In fact, some very famous poetry, including some of the famous German poet Goethe, deals with that issue. So poetry lends itself to pouring out emotional pain. Once you have overcome the intimidation factor that poetry must necessarily be “difficult”—which is a myth—you’ll probably quickly discover one of its less intimidating aspects: It’s short! No need to write long essays or stories. A poem can be just a few lines. You can even create haiku—they just require 17 syllables that you can turn into focused pain relief. Another reason poetry helps express emotions is that it lends itself to metaphors.(25)Sure, you can use metaphors anywhere, but poems practically beg for them. So you don’t have to be blunt—unless you want to be. Instead, you can find a suitable image that expresses what you feel—and put it in your cancer poem. Questions 23 to 25 are based on the recording you have just heard.23. What has been tested in actual clinical studies?24. What is the fact about some famous poetry?25. What does thespeaker say about metaphors?23.A.Writing helps relieve stress.B.Cancer can be cured.C.Writing improves treatment.D.Writers hardly have cancer. 24.A.They are written by teenagers who are in love.B.They deal with the teenagers’ love affairs.C.They show the teenagers’ ideas about love.D.They teach teenagers how to love others. 25.A.They are seldom used in poems.B.They can make a poem blunt.C.They are needed in a poem.D.They are mostly used to express feelings.

If we don’t pick up George and Martha in 25 minutes, we’ll never get to the theater on time.W: Oh, didn’t I tell you? Martha called to say he r daughter was ill and they could not go tonight.Q: What is the woman probably going to do first?14.M: You’ve been hanging onto the phone for quite a while. You know she always has the latest news in town and can’t wait to talk it over with me.Q: What do we know about Sally from the conversation?15:W: It’s always been hard to get this car into first gear and nowthe clutch seems to be sleeping.M: If you leave the car with me, I’ll fix it for yo u this afternoon.Q: Who is the woman probably speaking to?16.M: Kate, why does the downtown area look deserted now?W: Well, there used to be some really good stores, but lots of them moved out to the mall.Q: What do we learn from the conversation?17.W: I find the lounge such a cozy place to study in. I really likethe feeling when sitting on the sofa and doing the reading.M: Well for me the hardest part about studying here is staying awake.Q: What does the man mean?18:W: These mosqu ito bites are killing me. I can’t help scratching.M: Next time you go camping, take some precaution, say, wearing long sleeves.Q: Why does the man suggest the woman wear long sleeves?Long ConversationsConversation 1M: Hello and welcome to our pro gram “Working Abroad”. Our guest this evening is a Londoner who lives and works in Italy. Her name is Susan Hill. Susan, welcome to the program. You live in Florence. How long have you been living there?W: Since 1982, but when I went there in 1982, I planned to stay for only 6 months.M: Why did you change your mind?W: Well, I’m a designer. I design leather goods, mainly shoes and handbags. Soon after I arrived in Florence, I got a job with one of Italy’s top fashion houses, Ferragamo. So I decided to stay.M: How lucky! Do you still work for Ferragamo?W: No, I’ve been a freelance designer for quite a long time now. Since 1988, in fact.M: So, does that mean you design for several different companies now?W: Yes, that’s right. I’ve designed many fa shion items for a number of Italian companies. And in the last 4 years, I’ve also been designing for the British company, Burberrys.M: What have you been designing for them?W: Mostly handbags and small leather goods.M: How has fashion industry in Italy changed since 1982?W: Oh, yes, it has become a lot more competitive, because thequality of products from other countries has improved a lot, but Italian quality and design is still world famous.M: And do you ever think of returning to live in England?W: No, not really. Working in Italy is more interesting, I also love the Mediterranean sun and the Italian life style.M: Well, thank you for talking to us, Susan.W: It was a pleasure.19. At the moment I am hoping to get onto a PHD program.M: What excites you about drama?W: I find it’s a communicative way to study people and you learn how to read people in drama. So usually I can understand what people are saying, even though they might be lying.M: That would be useful.W: Yeah, it’s very useful for me as well. I am an English lecturer, so I use a lot of drama in my classes, such as role-plays. And I ask my students to create mini-dramas. They really respond well. At the moment I am hoping to get onto a PHD course. I would like to concentrate on Asian drama and try to bring Asian theater to the world attention. I don’t know how successful I will be, but here is hoping.M: Oh, I’m sure you will b e successful. Now, Claire, what do you do for stage fright?W: Ah, stage fright. Well, many actors have that problem. I get stage fright every time I am going to teach a new class. The night before, I usually can’t sleep.M: What? For teaching?W: Yes! I get really bad stage fright, but the minute I step intothe classroom or get onto the stage, it just all falls into place. Then I just feel like “Yeah, this is what I mean to do.” and I am fine.M: Well, that’ cool.23. Why does woman find studying drama and theatre useful?24. How did the woman student respond to her way of teaching English?25. What does the woman say about her stage fright?Section B Short PassagesPassage OneIn January 1989, the Community of European Railways presented their proposal for a high speed pan-European train network, extending from Sweden to Sicily and from Portugal to Poland by the year 2023. If their proposal becomes a reality, it will revolutionize train travel in Europe. Journeys between major cities will take half the timethey take today. Brussels will be only one and half hours from Paris. The quickest way to get from Paris to Frankfurt, from Barcelona to Madrid will be by train, not plane. When the network is complete, it will integrate three types of railway line, totally new high-speed lines, with trains operatingits speeds of 300kms per hour; upgraded lines, which allow for speeds up to 200 to 225 kms per hour and existing lines, for local connections and distribution of freight. If business people can choose between a 3-hour train journey from city center to citycenter and 1-hour flight, they'll choose the train, said anexecutive travel consultant. They won't go by plane anymore. If you calculate flight time, check in and travel to and from the airport, you’ll find almost no difference and if your plane arrives late due to bad weather or air traffic jams or strikes, then the train passengers will arrive at their destination first.Since France introduced the first 260-km per hour high speed train service between Paris and Lyons in 1981, the trains have achieved higher and higher speeds. On many routes, airlines have lost up to90 percent of their passengers to high speed trains. If peopleaccept the community of European Railways’ plan, the 21st centurywill be the new age of the train.Questions 26-29 are based on the passage you have just heard.26. What is the proposal presented by the Community of the European Railways?27. What will happen when the proposal becomes a reality?28. Why will business people prefer a 3-hour train journey to a 1-hour flight?29. When did France introduce the first high speed train service?Passage TwoWestern doctors are beginning to understand what traditional healers have always known that the body and the mind are inseparable. Until recently, modern urban physicians heal the body, psychiatrists the mind and priests the soul. However, the medical world is now paying more attention to holistic medicine, which is an approach based on a belief that people’s state of mind can make them sick or speed the recovery from sickness.Several studies show that the effectiveness of a certain drug often depends on the patients expectations of it. For example, in onerecent study, psychiatrists at a major hospital try to see how patients could be made calm. They divided them into two groups; one group was given a drug while the other group received a harmless substance instead of medicine without their knowledge. Surprisingly, more patients in the second group showed the desired effects than those in the first group. In study after study, there is a positive reaction in almost one third of the patients taking harmless substances. How is this possible? How can such a substance have an effect on the body? Evidence from a 1997 study at the University of California showsthat several patients who receive such substances were able to produce their own natural drug, that is, as they took the substance, their brains released natural chemicals that act like a drug. Scientists theorize that the amount of these chemicals released by a person’s brain quite possibly indicates how much faith the person has in his or her doctor.Questions 30-32 are based on the passage you have just heard.30. According to the speaker, what are western doctors beginning to understand?31. What does the recent study at a major hospital seem to prove?32. What evidence does the 1997 study of the University ofCalifornia produce?Passage ThreeSo we’ve already talked a bit about the growth of extreme sport s like rock-climbing. As psychologists, we need to ask ourselves “Why is this person doing this?”, “Why do people take these risks and put themselves in danger when they don’t have to?” One commontrait among risk-takers is that they enjoy strong feelings or sensations. We call this trait “sensation seeking”. A sensation-seeker is someone who is always looking for new sensations. What else do we know about sensation seekers? Well, as I said, sensation-seekers like strong emotions. You can see this trait in many parts of a person’s life not just in extreme sports. For example, many sensation seekers enjoy hard rock music. They like the loud sound and strong emotions of the songs. Similarly, sensation-seekers enjoy frightening horror movies. They like the feeling of being scared and horrified while watching the movie. This feeling is even strongerfor extreme sports where the person faces real danger. Sensation-seekers feel that danger is really exciting. In addition, sensation-seekers like new experiences that force them to push their personal limits. For them, repeating the same things everyday is boring. Manysensation-seekers choose jobs that involve risk, such as starting a new business or being an Emergency Room doctor. These jobs are different everyday, s o they never know what will happen. That’s why many sensation-seekers also like extreme sports. When you do rock-climbing, you never know what will happen. The activity is always new and different.Questions 33 to 35 are based on the passage you’ve just heard.33. According to the speaker, what is a common trait among risk-takers?34. What do sensation-seekers find boring?35. What is the speaker’s profession?Section CCompound DictationIf you are like most people, you’ve indulged in fake listenin g many times. You go to history class, sitting in the third row, and look squarely at the instructor as she speaks, but your mind is far away, floating in the clouds of pleasant daydreams. Occasionally, you comeback to earth. The instructor writes an important term on the chalkboard and you dutifully copy it in your notebook. Every once in a while the instructor makes a witty remark causing others in the class to laugh; you smile politely, pretending that you’ve heard the remark and found it mildly humorous. You have a vague sense of guilt that you aren’t paying close attention, but you tell yourself that any material you miss can be picked up from a friend’s notes. Besides, the instructor is talking about road construction in ancient Rome and nothing could be more boring. So back you go into your private little world. Only later do you realize you’ve missed important information for a test. Fake listening may be easily exposed, since many speakers are sensitive to facial cues and can tell if you are merely pretending to listen. Your blank expression and far-away look in your eyes are the cues that betray your inattentiveness. Even if you are not exposed, there is another reason to avoid fakery. It’s easy for this behavior to become a habit. For some people, the habit is so deeply-rooted that they automatically start daydreaming when the speaker begins talking on something complex or uninteresting. As a result, they miss lots of valuable information.。

A) Painting a picture.B) Hosting a program.C) Designing a studio.D) T aking a photograph. W: Well, tonight we have Professor Brown in the studio to talk about his recent book Fashion Images. Good evening, professor.M: Good evening, and thank you for inviting me here this evening.Q: What is the woman doing?

Everywhere we look we see Americans running. They run for every reason anybody could think of. They run for health, for beauty, to lose weight, to feel fit and because it’s the thing they lov e to do. Every year, for example, thousands upon thousands of people run in one race, the Boston Marathon, the best known long distance race in the United States. In recent years, there have been nearly 5,000 official competitors and it takes three whole minutes for the crowd of runners just to cross the starting line. You may have heard the story of the Greek runner Pheidippides. He ran from Marathon to Athens to deliver the news of the great victory 2,500 years ago. No one knows how long it took him to run the distance. But the story tells us that he died of the effort. Today no one will die in a
Marathon race. But the effort is still enormous. Someone does come in first in this tiring foot race. But at the finish line we see what this race is about: not being first but finishing. The real victory is not over one’s fellow runners but over one’s own body. It’s a victory of will-power over fatigue. In the Boston marathon each person who crosses that finish line is a winner.
14. What’s the real victory for the thousands of Marathon runners?
A) The victory over one’s fellow runners.
B) The victory over former winners.
C) The victory of will-power over fatigue.
D) The victory of one’s physical strength.
