The growth of population during the past few centuries is no proof that population will continue to grow straight upward toward infinity and doom. On the contrary, demographic history offers evidence that population growth has not been at all constant. According to paleo-ecologist Edward Deevey, the past million years show three momentous changes. The first, a rapid increase in population around one million B.C., followed the innovations of tool-making and tool-using. But when the new power from the use of tools had been exploited, the rate of world population growth fell and became almost stable. The next rapid jump in population started perhaps 10.000 years ago, when men began to keep herds, plow and plant the earth. Once again when initial productivity gains had been absorbed, the rate of population growth abated. These two episodes suggest that the third great change, the present rapid growth, which began in the West between 250 and 350 years ago, may also slow down when, or if technology begins to yield fewer innovations. Of course, the current knowledge revolution may continue without foreseeable end. Either way—contrary to popular belief in constant geometric growth—population can be expected in the long run to adjust to productivity. And when one takes this view, population growth is seen to represent economic progress and human triumph rather than social failure.1.In the passage, when did the first significant demographic change occur?2.What did human beings learn to do when the 2nd demographic change took place?3.What is found to have close relationship with rapid increase in population?4.What can be concluded when the current tide of knowledge revolution ebbs?5.What is the concept most people have on population growth? A.Three to four centuries ago.B.Ten thousand years ago.C.At a time when steamed engine was invented.D.At a time when human beings began to use tools. A.To use stone.B.To plant the earth.C.To build aircraft.D.To derive automobiles. A.War between 2 centuries.B.Ways discovered to increase productivity.C.Migration from a continent to another continent.D.A new religion beginning to be accepted by people. A.Productivity will rise.B.Productivity will receive no impact.C.Population growth will slow down.D.Population growth will become accelerated. A.The population is always in constant geometric growth.B.Rapid growth is followed by stable growth.C.Decelerated growth is followed by a declineD.No growth at all.【答案】第1题:D第2题:B第3题:B第4题:C第5题:A【解析】1.

People who question or even look down on the study of the past and its works usually assume that the past is entirely different from the present, and that hence we can learn nothing worthwhile from the past. But it is not true that the past is entirely different from the present. We can learn much of value from its similarity and its difference.A tremendous change in the conditions of human life and in our knowledge and control of the natural world has taken place since ancient times. The ancients could not, however, see in advance our contemporary technical and social environment, and hence have no advice to offer us about the particular problems facing us. But, although social and economic arrangements vary with time and place, man still remains man. We and the ancients share a common human nature and hence certain common human experiences and problems. The poets bear witness that ancient man, too, saw the sun rise and set, felt the wind on his cheek, was possessed by love and desire, experienced joy and excitement as well as frustration and disappointment, and knew good and evil. The ancient poets speak across the centuries to us, sometimes more directly and vividly than our contemporary writers. And the ancient prophets and philosophers, in dealing with the basic problems of men living together in society, still have something to say to us.We also learn from the past by considering the respects in which it differs from the present. We can discover where we are today and what we have become by knowing what the people of the past did and thought. And part of the past—our personal past and that of the race—always lives in us.1.According to the writer, our past can teach us quite a lot because ()2.In the second paragraph, the writer places great emphasis on the fact that ()3.Judging from the context, the reason for the writer to talk about the poets is that ()4.In the first line of the last paragraph, the sentence “We can discover where we are today...” means ()5.Which of the following best summarizes the main idea of the passage? A.it is very different from the presentB.it is quite the same as the presentC.we can draw many lessons from itD.we are not working so hard as the people in the past问题2选项A.human nature does not change easilyB.a great change has taken place in the conditions of human lifeC.social arrangements change quicklyD.it is impossible to ask the ancient people to give us useful advice问题3选项A.they tried to talk to people who were to come after themB.they knew good and evil better than other peopleC.they were the most emotional people in their timesD.they recorded the life of ancient people in their poems问题4选项A.we can know how much development we have madeB.we can identify where we are living at the present ageC.we can learn more about our problemsD.we can travel to any place quite easily问题5选项A.Our present has little in common with the past.B.Past human experiences can be used to serve the present.C.Some people in the past predicted things in our age accurately.D.Our present age is basically similar to the past one.【答案】第1题:C第2题:A第3题:D第4题:A第5题:B【解析】1.

3.单选题The ancient Chinese thought comets were celestial brooms wielded by the gods to sweep the heavens free of evil. In the West they were believed to presage the fall of Jerusalem, the death of monarchs and such anomalies as two-headed calves. The Norman Conquest of England was attributed to the 1006 flyby of Halley’s, history’s most famous comet, which has been linked to everything from Julius Caesar’s assassination to the defeat of Attila the Hun. Told that Earth would pass through Halley’s tail during its 1910 visit, many Americans panicked and bought gas masks and “comet pills.”Alan Hale calls these waves of fear and mysticism “comet madness,” and as codiscoverer of Comet Hale-Bopp, he’s seen more than his share. Ever since his find was a nnounced, he has been inundated with inquiries, pronouncements and accusations from the cometary fringe.Hale has found that the arrival of a major comet—especially so near the end of a millennium—is still widely regarded as an omen of upheaval and disaster Several Christian Fundamentalists, he writes in the current issue of Skeptical Inquirer, have proclaimed Hale-Bopp to be one of the “signs of the end times” foretold in the New Testament. They also suggest that the comet might be the object described in Revelation 8:10 as a great star named Wormwood that “fell from heaven, blazing like a torch.” Wormwood, according to the Bible, destroys a third of almost everything: people, land, rivers and seas. Others claim that the comet is some kind of alien mother s hip “under intelligent control.”Speculation reached a fever pitch last November when Chuck Shramek, an amateur astronomer based in Houston, Texas, announced on a U.S. radio talk show that he had photographed a “Satum-like object” that seemed to be followi ng in Hale-Bopp's wake. Shramek’s breathless claim elevated Hale-Bopp fantasies from supermarket tabloids to the mainstream press and generated thousands of posts to message boards and astronomy home pages on the Internet. One fast-spreading rumor had it that the object was an alien spacecraft four times the size ofEarth.Hale was barraged with reporters’ queries, and in an effort to calm the reporters, heinvestigated Shramek’s photograph and determined that the “object” in it was an ordinary eighth-magnitude star. After posting his conclusions on the Net, Hale became the target of a flood of hate E-mail, much of it accusing him of being part of a conspiracy to suppress the true nature of Hale-Bopp.Hale acknowledges that it was only natural for our ancestors to be apprehensive about the fiery apparitions in the night sky. But he is impatient with his modem counterparts, who should know better. “I ask readers to treat all these irresponsible reports with the disdain they deserve,” he says, “and instead enjoy the beauty of the comet for its own sake,”1.The best title for this passage would be()2.Alan Hale’s attitude towards his contemporary astronomers’s reports about newly discovered comets is ()3.Which of the following is FALSE according to the passage?4.Judging by the context, the word “inundated” in Paragraph Two most probably means()5.We can conclude from the passage that()问题1选项ets, Omens of DisastersB.The Discovery of Comet Hale-BoppC.Alan Hale, A Great AstronomerD.Crazy about Comets问题2选项A.contemptuousB.unconcernedC.liberalD.positive 问题3选项A.There area variety of explanations of Comet-Bopp.B.In the West, comets are regarded as omens of upheavals and disasters.C.Alan Hale has discovered many other comets except comet Hale-Bopp.D.Many people were not satisfied by Alan Hale’s interpretation of Chuck Shramek’s find.问题4选项A.relishedB.overwhelmedC.chargedD.deprived问题5选项A.Chuck Shramek’s claim caused a great public concern and interestB.Alan Hale is not fond of E-mailC.Few astronomers are superstitiousD.Most Americans are not impressionable【答案】第1题:C第2题:A第3题:C第4题:B第5题:A【解析】1.

翻译题“Intelligence” at best is an assumptive construct — the meaning of the word has never been clear. There is more agreement on the kinds of behavior referred to by the term than there is on how to interpret or classify them. But it is generally agreed that a person of high intelligence is one who can grasp ideas readily, make distinctions, reason logically, and make use of verbal and mathematical symbols in solving problems. An intelligence test is a rough measure of a child's capacity for learning, particularly for learning the kinds of things required in school. It does not measure character, social adjustment, physical endurance, manual skills, or artistic abilities. To criticize it for such failure is roughly comparable to criticizing a thermometer for not measuring wind velocity. Now since the assessment of intelligence is a comparative matter we must be sure that the scale with which we are comparing our subjects provides a “valid” or “fair” comparison.【答案】“智力”充其量只是一个假设性的概念, 因为智力的含义从来就是模糊的。

2.单选题In managing information resources, the medium may be the key to an effective system. The medium is a vehicle, a tool, or a container for holding information; the information itself is the thing of value.Three popular categories of information media are paper, film, and electronic storage devices. The media choice must not be viewed as a choice among these three, however; it must be viewed as an opportunity to select from a multitude of media possibilities in combinations that build effective systems. In many instances the person responsible for information-resource management is not the person who determines the medium in which information will be created. In such a case, the manager of a firm’s information resources faces a challenge in making a significant contribution to the organization’s objectives. For effective management of information resources, media conversion may be necessary. Examples include keying or scanning paper documents to convert them to electronic media. Other processes convert electronic media from one format to another. For example, disk files created on one system may not be compatible with another system. Various hardware and software combinations can be used to convert files to formats that equipment will accept. For information generated within organizations, this necessity of making systems compatible may be eliminated by cooperative planning. However, very little control can be exercised over the media used to generate information that comes to your organization from the outside. The medium for information may be selected to satisfy a need that exists when information is created and communicated. For example, a paper record may be created because of its portability and because no special equipment is necessary for later references to that information; electronic transmission may be selected because it is the fastest means of communicating information. A firm may use electronic mail because a network already exists for on-line computer communication. The additional application may cost less than postage to mail paper memo.1.Which of the following can best sum up the passage?2.The first paragraph aims at telling the reader()3.According to the author, ()4.For effective management of information resources, the manager should ()5.The main idea of the last paragraph is ()问题1选项A.Media Selection in Managing Information Resources.B.The Importance and Necessity of Media Conversion.C.Three Categories of Information Media.D.Various Means of Communicating Information. A.the importance of information resources managementB.the relationship between the medium and informationC.the great variety of media for holding informationD.the numerous resources of information问题3选项A.paper is the best storage deviceB.people have three choices in selecting information mediumC.it is better to let the person responsible for information-resource management determine the mediumD.the manager should build an effective system by selecting a good combination of different media问题4选项A.convert all paper documents to electronic mediaB.make media conversion when necessaryC.control the media used to generate information both inside and outside his organizatione one format in processing information问题5选项A.paper record is the most convenient medium for later referenceB.electronic mail costs less than postage to mail paper memosC.different media for information maybe selected for different purposesD.by using different media,a firm can create various information for its objectives【答案】第1题:A第2题:B 第3题:D第4题:B第5题:C【解析】1.

Is e-mail a blessing or a curse? Last month, after a week’s vocation, I discovered 1218 unread e-mail messages waiting in my box. I pretended to be dismayed, but secretly I was pleased. This is how we measure our wired worth in the late 1990s. If you aren’t overwhelmed by e-mail, you must be doing something wrong.E-mail. Can’t live with it, can’t live without it. Artists and real artists, advertisers and freedom fighters, lovers and sworn enemies —they’ve all flocked to e-mail as they would to any new medium of expression. E-mail is convenient, saves time, brings us closer to one another, and helps us manage our ever-more-complex lives. Books are written, campaigns conducted, crimes committed — all via e-mail. But it is also inconvenient, wastes our time, isolates us in front of our computers and introduces more complexity into our already too-hurried lives. To skeptics, e-mail is just the latest chapter in the evolving history of human communication.Yet e-mail all online communication is in fact something truly different; it captures the essence of life at the close of the 20th century with an authority that few other products of digital technology can claim. Does the pace of life seem ever faster? E-mail simultaneously allows us to cope with that acceleration and contributes to it. Are our attention spans shriveling under barrages of new, improved forms of stimulation? The quick and dirty e-mail is made to order for those whose ability to concentrate is measured in nanoseconds. If we accept that the creation of the global-spanning Internet is one of the most important technological innovations of the last half of this century, then we must give e-mail, the living embodiment of human connection across the Net, pride of place. The way we interact with each other is changing; e-mail is both the catalyst and the instrument of that change.1.According to the passage, e-mail is convenient because it ()2.The author of this passage is about e-mail()3.Which of the following phrases is the closest in meaning to the phrase “give ... pride of place” in Paragraph 3?4.All the following statements are true EXCEPT()5.What is the main idea of this passage? A.saves our timeB.introduces more complexity into our too-upset livesC.makes communication possibleD.enrich our lives问题2选项A.skepticalB.positiveC.negativeD.firm问题3选项A.take pride in the placeB.be proud ofC.give ... the most important positionD.put stress on问题4选项A.E-mail not only allows us to cope with the faster pace of life but also makes it acceleratedB.The way we interact with each other is changingC.E-mail can help us manage our ever-more-complex livesD.Only advertisers make use of e-mail问题5选项A.E-mail is one of the most important technological innovations of the last half of the 20th century.B.E-mail is the instrument that brings about great changes in human connection.C.E-mail helps us understand the essence of life at the close of the 20th century.D.E-mail is not only convenient but also inconvenient.【答案】第1题:A第2题:B第3题:C第4题:D第5题:A【解析】1.

3.单选题Economics involves the study of topics like wealth and poverty, money and banks, incomes, taxes, prosperity and depression, big business and labor unions, and hundreds of other matters that intimately affect the way we live. Economic forces surround our daily lives, influencing how easy or how hard it is to get a job, how much we can earn in our chosen occupations, and how much our paychecks will buy after we receive them.Economic factors are major concerns in government’s decisions about how much to spend and for what purposes, and how much to raise in taxes and who should be taxed as well as in their evaluations of the consequences of war, peace, and disarmament. Urban slums, job discrimination, unequal educational opportunities, and civil rights have important consequences for all of us for both those who are discriminated against and those who are not. At a still more global level economic factors are involved in birth, health, death, population growth, and the dynamics of history. In fact, probably without exception, each topic in economics not only touches somewhere on your own personal life but is also important to some current economic problems of government on social policy and is, at the same time, involved in the long-range concerns of human history. The common thread that runs through all of these topics, binding them together into a coherent body of study, is that one way or another each deals with the way society produces and uses goods and services. Practically nothing that we eat, wear, or use comes to us directly from nature. A loaf of bread is the end result of long series of operations that begins with planting and harvesting grain and proceeds through milling, baking, and shipping to the point at which the housewife can pick the loaf off the grocer’s shelf. The driver filli ng his tank at a services station is taking the final step in a long chain of activities: drilling oil wells, moving petroleum in ships and pipelines, chemical treatment, refining and storage. The same is generally true of all goods. The process of bridging the gap between the original resources of nature and needs of the final consumer is production. Production includes any activity that makes goods and services available to people. It is not restricted to work on tangible physical commodities, but encompasses services as well. Doctors, lawyers, teachers, and barbers are productive, as are actors, musicians, entertainers, and others who perform services for our benefits.1.Which of the following is not mentioned in the passage?2.We may infer from the con text that the word “encompass” (Line 4, Paragraph 5) means()3.According to the passage, economics is the study of ()4.Which of the following statements is TRUE?5.Which of the following can be learned from the passage? A.Economic factors influence our daily life.B.Economic factors are major concerns in government’s decisions about some policies.C.What we study in economics is how governments influence the use of land, labor, capital, etc.D.The services of wholesalers, retailers and bankers are an important part of the productive process.问题2选项A.surroundB.encloseC.encircleD.include问题3选项A.production and consumptionernment’s policyC.activities that make goods available to peopleD.consequences of war and peace. A.The services of doctors, lawyers and teachers are unproductive.B.Economic factors are involved in the development of history.C.All that we eat, wear, or use comes to us directly from nature.D.Job discrimination and unequal educational opportunities have important consequences only for those who are discriminated against. A.Urban slums, job discrimination, unequal educational opportunities, and civil rights are excluded from economic factors.B.Each topic in economics deals with the way society produces and uses goods and services.ernment policies determine the link between the resources of nature and needs of the consumer.D.A housewife cannot pick a loaf of bread off the grocer’s shelf unless there is a good harvest.【答案】第1题:C第2题:D第3题:A第4题:B第5题:B【解析】1.

例如:agree,acknowledge,assert,see,insist,according to,find,think,believe,show,point out,content,acclaim,say等4)特殊标点符号,有的表示具体说明、有表解释、有表反义等等,均有或强或弱的强调意味,主要的特殊标点符号有:——、()、“”等。
