翻译，从广义上讲，是两种文化之间的信息转换。
翻译改变的只是社会语言符号，而不是其文化信息。
语言符号的转换应服从近似对等文化信息的转换，而不仅仅是符号的近似对等。
对于翻译工作者来说，文化传达是一个重要的主题和任务。
美国翻译理论家奈达指出：“翻译是两种文化之间的交流。
对于真正成功的翻译而言，熟悉两种文化甚至比掌握两种语言更重要。
因为词语只有在其作用的文化背景中才有意义。
”这说明翻译要将两种文化结合起来，离开文化背景去翻译，不可能达到两种语言之间的真正交流。
宗教，作为人类文化的一种特殊形态，几乎与人类文化同步产生和发展。
宗教文化，可以说是对人类和社会影响最深最广的一种文化形态，它不仅影响到社会的经济、政治、科教、哲学、文学艺术，而且积淀在人的深层文化心理结构中，潜在而长久地影响着人的思想和行为。

从某种层面看，”老天爷”和”God”并不对等，英国翻译家大卫·霍克斯在翻译《红楼梦》中刘姥姥说的”谋事在人，成事在天”时，译为”Man proposes，God disposes”，似乎神形兼备，但由于不同的宗教背景和深层的文化差异，译文就有使刘姥姥由信佛变成基督教徒之嫌，从受众的角度看，译文称不上原汁原味。

因此，在翻译时我们可以选择西方人所熟悉的一词savior（person who rescue or saves sb from danger救世主）替代它。
笔者曾在课堂上让学生讨论如何翻译下面这句话“There was some real falsity when they came to treat the Goddess of Mercy as a fashion plate of the court today.”不少学生翻译成“中国人渐渐把慈悲女神描绘成穿着时髦的宫廷贵妇形象,这可严重走样了。
”这种译法不免会造成我们中国读者对文化的错误理解。
佛教是在中国流传最广,影响最深远的宗教,何不把“慈悲女神”译为我们所熟知的“观音菩萨”呢？同样，如果缺乏西方宗教文化背景知识，翻译此句“You can meet many good Samaritans in our university”就会遇到理解上的障碍了。

正如翻译大师奈达所言：“一篇成功的翻译，掌握二元文化要比双语能力更重要，因为词汇只有在相应的文化下才能发挥其作用。
”根据奈达对文化因素的分类，他将其分为：生态文化、语言文化、物质文化、宗教文化及社会文化。
宗教作为人类文化的一个组成部分，势必会对语言造成极大影响。
这种影响在英语语言中极为明显。
由于社会背景，在西方国家，特别是英国和美国，宗教的确占据在他们日常生活中。
这种历史悠久的宗教信仰，正如我们中国儒家的传统思想一样，从某种程度上说造就了他们独特的价值观及生活方式，也影响着他们每天都在使用的交流工具：语言。
由于东西方宗教文化的明显差异，在英汉翻译中，我们特别需要对其宗教背景知识认真了解，以便顺利完成跨文化交流工作。
二、宗教对英语及其翻译的影响英语中宗教（religion）一词来源于拉丁语religae，其本意是使紧紧联结。
这种词源上的解释我们可以理解为是由某种教义或道德准则而使信徒们联结起来，使人们对神圣信仰、义务和崇拜。
作为一种社会现象，宗教文化在人类文明中发挥了重要作用。
在西方，宗教几乎渗透在社会传统、文学、艺术甚至日常生活等等各个领域中。
而基督教，作为西方宗教的主要力量，几乎影响了整个西方世界。
可以说一个人从生到死，都离不开它。
比如说，人在出生后首先会受洗；结婚时会在教堂举行婚礼；离世后，会接受牧师的祷告。
在西方各种节日中，最盛大的要数圣诞节了，而这个节日就是为了纪念耶稣基督的诞辰。
在文学领域里，宗教影响更不计其数。
例如米尔顿的《失乐园》、但丁的《神曲》等等。
而其中最有影响力的巨著应该是《圣经》了。
它里面不仅涵盖了宗教观点，而且它为西方政治、法律、教育、文学及文化提供了基本框架。
在现代英语语言中，仍然充斥着许多与宗教有关的习惯搭配及用法。
这也是英语学习者及译者需要掌握西方宗教文化的原因。
这里，笔者将从四个方面分析英汉翻译中的宗教文化因素。
1.人物在英语国家，许多人都以宗教典著当中的人物起名，特别是《圣经》当中有许多人物，像犹大，诺亚，夏娃等等，他们每个人物背后都有与之相关的故事，每个性格千差万别，这些人名伴随着他们的故事被人们传诵，久而久之也被赋予了一些除了标识姓名之外的比喻和象征的意义。
其数量直达和使用频率之高，使得人们常常意识不到自己随意的一句话竟源于圣经。
译者在遇到这些翻译时，必须对上下文进行仔细推敲，以决定是使用直译还是意译。
例如：that joke you told us is as old as adam， but i still think its funny.你给我们讲的那个笑话简直老掉了牙，不过我认为还是很有趣的。
这句子中有一个著名的圣经人物亚当（adam），据圣经记载，他是上帝创造的第一个人类，而夏娃是第一个女人，他们曾一起在上帝创造的花园—伊甸园中生活，由于夏娃偷食了禁果，他们两个均得到上帝不同方式的惩罚。
亚当和夏娃可以说是人类的始祖了，因此“亚当”这个专有名词便蕴涵了新的意义：指古老或陈旧的事物或人。
因此，如果对此了解不深，直译其人名，便会曲解原文意思，使意义模糊不清。
2.数字基督教中有许多富有特殊含义的数字。
作为英语学习者或翻译者，对其所隐藏的深刻文化内涵绝不能忽略。
其中最著名的应该是数字“13”了，可以说它是基督教世界里的一大禁忌。
这背后又隐藏着一个关于背叛的故事。
据说耶稣与其13个门徒的最后一顿晚餐上，犹大，也就是其第十三个门徒背叛了耶稣，把他送上了绞刑架。
因此那些虔诚的基督徒们相信十三是一个会带来厄运的数字。
日常生活中，英美人就像回避“4”一样地回避“13”这个数字。
所以楼层号没有13，请客绝不能有13人，飞机、火车、剧院等没有第13排13座，每月的第13日都不宜进行庆典的喜庆活动。
另外一个在基督教世界比较有影响力的数字是“7”。
基督教认为上帝在七天内创造了人类，有七种美德，人的一生被分为七个生长时期，主祷文也分为七个部分，这是一个神圣的数字，甚至连七的倍数也被认为是神圣的。
因此，它便经常用来表示规范或调解人类行为以及宗教仪式。
比如七宗罪、神的七大礼物、神的七大圣礼，每个教条背后都蕴涵着其价值观及传统习俗。
请看下面一则错译的例子：he is the seventh son of a seventh son in the family.他是家里第七子的第七子。
很显然，这样的翻译意义不明，让人看了一头雾水。
由于数字“7”在基督教中的神圣地位，句中表示此人是“the seventh son of a seventh son”，当然不会只是表面意义上的第七个儿子了。
我们可以把这句话理解成此人在家里地位的重要性，因此把这个短语译成“非常显要的后代”比较恰当。
3.动物我们常见到的关于动物的英语习语很多，但是很多人可能不知道，其引申意义来源于英语世界的宗教文化。
而对于那些不了解宗教文化便想当然的翻译与之相关的句子，便会闹出笑话。
请看下面的句子：the woman in charge of the accounts department is an absolute dragon！在中国文化中，龙被视为一种神奇的动物，代表着一种积极向上的民族精神。
我们常以龙的精神来代表中华民族，在中国，关于龙的表达方式，几乎都是正面意义的，比如说龙腾虎跃、龙马精神、龙飞凤舞等等。
但令人意想不到的是，龙在《圣经》中确是一个十足的恶魔或者凶猛的生物，它是一个违背上帝而被教民视作是彻头彻尾的反面形象。
因此，龙这个生物，在西方世界绝不是像在中国一样受欢迎。
倘若拥有了此类宗教文化的知识背景，这个句子应该被合理地译为“会计科那个女科长是个十足的母夜叉！”又如：i was made the scapegoat， but it was the others who started the fire.是别人放的火，让我背了黑锅。
这个句子中的“scapegoat”就是来源于基督教。
“替罪羊”的故事说的是：上帝耶和华想考验亚伯拉罕对他是否忠诚，要他把爱子以撒献为火祭的供品，亚伯拉罕就在高山上用石头砌起了祭坛，把吓得魂不附体的以撒绑了起来，放在准备点火的木柴上，然后举起尖刀朝着以撒刺去——正在此刻，耶和华派天使急速拉住了他的手腕——亚伯拉罕就把附近一只迷了路，角被荆棘挂住的山羊捉来，代替以撒做了火祭。
于是人们就用“替罪羊”来比喻代人受罪的人。
4.典故及习语英语中许多的典故与习语均来自《圣经》，这些表达方式不仅盛行于文学作品中，也在政治、哲学、科技等领域中有所表现，可以说是渗透了生活的方方面面。
请看下面例句：his dream of going abroad became the tower of babel， for he didn’t pass toefl， and money is also a problem.他的出国梦是很难实现了，因为他没有考过托福，而且还没有钱。
句中“巴别塔（babel）”来自旧约·创世纪，据说在大洪水过后，诺亚方舟上幸存的人们想要修建一座能够通天从而见到上帝的塔，上帝因他们的狂妄自大盛怒，于是混淆了他们的语言，使得他们无法交流从而阻碍了他们修建巴别塔的计划。
所以“巴别塔”这个词语可以理解成“痴心妄想”或是“某种引起障碍或混淆的事物”。
试想，如果不知道这样的宗教故事，我们很难正确理解句子的意思，更别提忠实流畅的翻译了。
这种由于不知道宗教背景知识而造成的意义理解错误真的是值得译者注意的问题。
还有很多习语，比如“奋勇追敌，不畏强暴”（beard the lion），“对牛弹琴”（cast pearls before swine）。
仔细学习这些习语，你会发现它们都是来自宗教故事的引申。
试想，一个译者如果对这些宗教因素不加以认真学习和充分了解，大量误译错译定会出现。
这也就是我们所强调的，译者不仅语言知识有充分把握，更要对其文化背景知识有深刻了解认识，这样才能保证译作的忠实与流畅。
三、结语以上所分析的宗教文化因素对翻译的影响只是九牛一毛，但足以看出翻译的重要性。
毫无疑问，英语这种包含了历史悠久的宗教文化的语言，势必会给英语学习者与译者造成一定障碍。
某种程度上，译者不仅是两种语言的桥梁，更是两种不同文化传递的纽带。
因此，在翻译工作中，不能只注重语言知识的学习，更重要的是将语言和文化有效地联系起来，在学好语言知识的同时，谙熟其负载的文化内涵，提高文化差异的意识，才能更有效地体现并传达语言，实现跨文化交际。
