The term "crocodile tears" refers to insincere sadness. This term has an etymology dating back several centuries. As early as the fourth century, crocodile tears are referenced in the literature with the meaning of insincere sorrow. It is said that crocodiles weep while eating their hunted animals because they are sad; however, this sadness is not honest. The term crocodile tears became widely popular after it was documented in a fifteenth-century book titled The Voyage and Travel of Sir John Mandeville, Knight. A passage from the book reads: "These crocodiles kill men and they eat them weeping."As you may already know, crocodilians(鳄目动物) likely feel bad about little—especially feeding. However, the assumption of the crocodile-tears metaphor may be true. In a 2007 paper published in BioScience titled "Crocodile Tears: And they eat them weeping", researchers observed 7 crocodilians in cages during feeding time at a reserve (4 caimans and 3 American alligators). The researchers observed the crocodilians outside of water at feeding stations to better find out whether tearing developed.Five of the 7 crocodilians developed something like tears in their eyes before, during or after feeding. The researchers suggest that these crocodile tears occur because a crocodilian hisses (发出嘶嘶声) while it eats, and this hissing forces air through the spaces in the bone behind the nose and out the eye, in the process picking up nasolacrimal secretions (鼻泪管分泌物.)In humans, crocodile tears is a medical condition that causes a person to tear up while eating. Crocodile tears typically occur because of a temporary loss of facial control due to damage of the facial nerve. Specifically, when the facial nerve grows again, it does so incorrectly thus resulting in tears during chewing food.(1)The underlined word "etymology" in Paragraph 1 refers to ________.A.a reference book containing articles on various topicsB.the origin and history of a particular termC.a printed sheet of paper that arc given free to advertiseD.the application and influence of a new theory(2)The term "crocodile tears" ________.A.is a medical condition that causes a crocodile to tear upB.became widely popular as early as the fourth centuryC.refers to pretended sadnessD.proved to be only an assumption(3)From the 2007 paper published in BioScience, we can know that ________.A.crocodilians especially feel bad about feedingB.not all the 7 crocodilians developed tearingC.the crocodilians were carefully observed inside waterD.crocodile tears occur because a crocodilian hisses after it eats(4)The passage is mainly about ________.A.what the real truth is about crocodile tearsB.when the term "crocodile tears" got popular in literatureC.how researchers made the experiment on crocodiliansD.why crocodile tears typically occur in humans【答案】(1)B(2)C(3)B(4)A【解析】【分析】本文是一篇说明文,通过引用“鳄鱼的眼泪”这一说法的来源、发展以及相关实验来告诉读者“crocodile tears”的真实含义。

阅读理解Durian(榴莲) is probably the smelliest fruit in the world, letting out an unusual unpleasant smell which would make anyone bring up. However, nobody was aware of what gave this fruit its unique smell, so a team of researchers from Singapore decided to take a look at its genome (基因组) and find out,Durian is well-known throughout Southeast Asia as the king of fruits, mostly because of its awful appearance and smell. However, the origin of this unpleasant smell was unknown, so researchers decided to map the genome of the fruit, and find the gene that controlled it. A group of genes, volatile sulfur compounds (含硫化合物), became very active in the fruit, and they were found responsible for resulting in the unpleasant smell. The fruit confuses everyone with a sulfuric smell, like rotten onions and ingredients. The smell lasts long, mostly because the fruit contains more volatile sulfur compounds. Other species usually benefit from two gene copies at most, but durian has four, leading to the striking smell. However, this smell might be an advantage for durian in the wild. Although we find it unpleasant, many animals might be attracted by it. If they eat the fruit, then they can easily spread its seeds everywhere, thus contributing to the distribution of the species. The mapping of the durian genome also showed some other information on the species. First of all, the fruit has an impressive number of genes, namely 46,000. Also, with the help of these genes, they saw how it evolved, and discovered it was related to the cacao tree. All the other discoveries have been published in the journal Nature Genetics.Despite the striking smell, many people actually enjoy eating the fruit. However, not all durian species are edible, and some of them may even cause damage to our health, Even so, the fruit is often imported, significantly contributing to the economy.(1)What give durian its unique smell?A. Onions nearby.B. Two gene copies.C. Rotten ingredients in it.D. Volatile sulfur compounds.(2)What does the underlin ed word “evolved” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?A. Developed.B. Escaped.C. Predicted.D. Tolerated.(3)What can we infer from the text?A. No birds enjoy eating durian.B. Durian can be planted all over the world.C. Some of durian species can not be eaten.D. Durian has no relationship with the cacao tree.(4)What's the best title for the text?A. What's Durian?B. The Influence of the SmellC. The Distribution of DurianD. The Mystery of the Unpleasant Smell of Durian 【答案】(1)D(2)A(3)C(4)D【解析】【分析】本文是一篇说明文,新加坡的研究者找出导致水果有难闻气味的原因就是水果中含有的挥发性硫化合物非常活跃,这种气味对于野外生存榴莲来说有利于吸引动物来吃这种水果,同时传播种子。

By now you've probably heard about the "you're not special" speech, when English teacher David McCullough told graduating seniors at Wellesley High School: "Do not get the idea you're anything special, because you're not." Mothers and fathers present at the ceremony 一and a whole lot of other parents across the Internet — took issue with McCullough's ego-puncturing (伤自尊的) words. But lost in the uproar (喧嚣)was something we really should be taking to heart: our young people actually have no idea whether they're particularly talented or accomplished or not. In our eagerness to elevate their self-esteem, we forgot to teach them how to realistically assess their own abilities, a crucial requirement for getting better at anything from math to music to sports. In fact, it's not just privileged high-school students: we all tend to view ourselves as above average.Such inflated self-judgments have been found in study after study and it's often exactly when we're least competent at a given task that we rate our performance most generously, in a 2006 study published in the journal Medical Education, for example, medical students who scored the lowest on an essay test were the most charitable in their self evaluations, while high-scoring students judged themselves much more strictly. Poor students, the authors note, "lack insight" into their own inadequacy. Why should this be? Another study, led by Cornell University psychologist David Dunning, offers an enlightening explanation. People who are incompetent, he writes with coauthor Justin Kruger, suffer from a “dual burden": they're not good at what they do, and their very clumsiness prevents them from recognizing how bad they are.In Dunning and Kruger's study, subjects scoring at the bottom on tests of logic, grammar and humor -extremely overestimated'' their talents. Although their test scores put them in the 12th percentile (百分位数) they guessed they were in the 62nd. What these individuals lacked (in addition 9 clear logic, proper grammar and a sense of humor) was "meta cognitive skill" the capacity to monitor how well they're performing. In the absence of that capacity, the subjects arrived at an overly hopeful view of their own abilities. There's a paradox here, the authors note: The skills that lead to competence in a particular domain are often the very same skills necessary to evaluate competence in that field? In other words, to get better at judging how well we're doing at an activity, we have to get better at the activity itself. There are a couple of ways out of this double bind. First, we can learn to make honest comparisons with others. Train yourself to recognize excellence, even when you yourself don't possess it, and compare what you can do against what truly excellent individuals are able to accomplish. Second, seek out feedback that is frequent, accurate and specific. Find a critic who will tell you not only how poorly you're doing, but just what it is that you're doing wrong. As Dunning and Kruger note, success indicates to us that everything went right, but failure is more ambiguous: any number of things could have gone wrong. Use this external feedback to figure out exactly where and when you screwed up.If we adopt these strategies — and most importantly, teach them to our children — they won't need parents, or a commencement (毕业典礼)speaker, to tell them that they're special. They'llalready know that they are, or have a plan to get that way.(1)The author thinks the real problem is that .A.no requirement is set up for young people to get betterB.we always tend to consider ourselves to be privilegedC.we don't know whether our young people are talented or notD.young people don't know how to assess their abilities realistically(2)We can infer from the passage that those high-scoring studentsA.know how to cultivate clear logic and proper grammarB.tend to be very competent in their high-scoring fieldsC.don't view themselves as competent because they know their limitsD.don't know how well they perform due to their strict self-judgement(3)The strategies of becoming special suggest that .A.we need internal honesty with ourselves and external honesty from othersB.the best way to get better is to carefully study past success and failureC.through comparison with others, one will know where and when he failsD.neither parents nor a commencement speaker can tell whether one is special(4)Which can be the best title of this passage?A.Tip On Making Ourselves More SpecialB.Let's Admit That We Are Not That SpecialC.Special or Not? 【英语】50套高中英语阅读理解及解析一、高中英语阅读理解1.阅读理解One of the biggest problems when we are talking is the awkward silence. Encountering this situation is so uncomfortable that you would avoid meeting new people in the first place. In the past, I struggled with this and I even thought it had to do with my DNA or something… But later I learned that once you know how to keep those words flowing, you can meet and talk to anyone you like, which helps create great possibilities for friendship, fun and shared activities that you would otherwise have missed out on.After studying this in depth, I had different opinions and found that one of these common behaviors is the habit of filtering (过滤)--holding back from saying something until you've "checked" to make sure that what you're about to say is cool, impressive and interesting. Another problem is not learning to get in the mood for conversation. If you don't know how to change from subjects, then it can take a lot of time to warm up.It is the reflex (习惯性思维) that allows you to say whatever goes on in your mind. It's fun to realize that you're allowed to say whatever is on your mind. As long as you don't say anything that could land you in jail (监狱).All of the "Oh! That's interesting…" "Hmm, I've never heard of that" "Hmm, cool!" expressions are reactionary (保守的) bits of conversation that prove to the other person that you're really listening. This works 99% of the time. So, if you show some interest, they'll hang around and want to talk to you even more.Everyone knows that stories juice-up conversations, but most people only talk about stories of their own lives. When someone mentions something related to any of them, just tell the story, even if it's not from your life. The more interesting, stranger or more frightening they are, the harder they are to forget.(1)If people can deal with the awkward silence, they can .A. train their working skillB. improve their life qualityC. enrich their social lifeD. establish their working relationship(2)When talking with others, we should .A. feel nervousB. think twiceC. be free to expressD. avoid breaking in (3)According to the passage, what do the speakers care much about?A. The attractive topics of conversation.B. The atmosphere of the conversation.C. The listener's experiences and tastes.D. The listener's curiosity and concern.(4)What does the underlined part "juice-up conversations" mean?A. making conversations more boringB. making conversations livelierC. making conversations smootherD. making conversations more relaxing【答案】(1)C(2)C(3)D(4)B【解析】【分析】本文本文是一篇议论文,我们谈话时最大的问题之一是尴尬的沉默。

Chinese scientists recently have produced two monkeys with the same gene, Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua, using the same technique that gave us Dolly the sheep. These monkeys are not actually the first primates(灵长类)to be cloned. Another one named Tetra was produced in the late 1990s by embryo(胚胎)splitting, the division of an early-stage embryo into two or four separate cells to make clones. By contrast, they were each made by replacing an egg cell nucleus (原子核)with DNA from a differentiated body cell. This Dolly method, known as somatic cell nuclear transfer(SCNT), can create more clones and allows researchers greater control over the edits they make to the DNA.Success came from adopting several new techniques. These included a new type of microscopy to better view the cells during handling or using several materials that encourage cell reprogramming, which hadn't been tried before on primates. Still, the research process proved difficult, and many attempts by the team failed. Just two healthy baby monkeys born from more than 60 tested mothers. This leads to many researchers' pouring water on the idea that the team's results bring scientists closer to cloning humans. They thought this work is not a stepping stone to establishing methods for obtaining live born human clones. Instead, this clearly remains a very foolish thing to attempt, it would be far too inefficient, far too unsafe, and it is also pointless. But the scientists involved emphasize that this is not their goal. There is now no barrier for cloning primate species, thus cloning humans is closer to reality. However, their research purpose is entirely for producing non-human primate models for human diseases; they absolutely have no intention, and society will not permit this work to be extended to humans. Despite limitations, they treat this breakthrough a novel model system for scientists studying human biology and disease.(1)What do we know about the technology called SCNT?A. It created the first two primates.B. It may contribute to editing the DNAC. It can divide an early-stage embryo into several cells.D. It produced two cloned monkeys with different genes.(2)What does the author mean by “pouring water on the idea” in paragraph 2?A. Keeping a hot topic of it.B. Having a low opinion of it.C. Attaching no importance to it.D. Adding supportive evidence to it.(3)What is the scientists' purpose to clone these monkeys?A. To help with the study of human diseases.B. To serve as a stepping stone to their reputation.C. To prepare for their research on human cloning.D. To raise money for holding an exhibition of novels.(4)What can we infer from the passage?A. New techniques seem to be pointless.B. Cloning humans is already on its way.C. Society won't agree to clone another monkey.D. The success rate of cloning a monkey was not high.【答案】(1)B(2)B(3)A(4)D【解析】【分析】本文是一篇说明文,科学家们利用高科技克隆猴子帮助研究人类疾病。

Sports are the base of my life, next to my mother who raised me when my dad left us. I have been into sports since I was six years old. I have known many coaches and heard hundreds of their tips, but they usually focused on drills to develop my skills and reach the next level of play. When I was in Senior Two, I met the new school basketball coach, Brian Pawloski. I thought I was certain to be selected for the school team since I had been in it the year before. I showed up to the tryouts and put out about 90% effort since I thought I'd make it with no problem. That was a big mistake.Brian Pawloski is the hardest-working coach I have ever met. He didn't expect 100% effort, he expected 200% effort. One example: he once made us do 40 suicide drills for the 40 lay-ups (投篮) we missed in a game. Some think this is crazy, but it isn't. After this conditioning practice, as we were getting a cup of cold water to drink, I said, "coach, that was the best practice I ever had." I was completely sincere. This man was and is the person who influenced me most at my high school. He expects us to be excellent not just on the court but in the classroom. If I am not working on basketball, I am reading a book that he thinks will help us better understand life's challenges, including Wooden, Coach, and The Screwtape Letters. In the first two years I slacked off, not putting forth my full potential. 1.

For the sake of safety/ For safety, children / a children should not be left alone at home2.

he与take a deep breath之间是逻辑上的主谓关系,而且take a deep breath明显发生在went up to之前,所以用现在分词的完成式作状语,故翻译为:Having taken a deep breath, he went up to the stage with a smile on his face.3.

The way a person treats others can reflect what kind of person he is.4.

Only when a series of technical problems are solved can new energy cars account for 20 percent of all the car sales by 2025.2. Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.1.

(It)_________________________4.

(would rather)_________________________【答案】1. The accident caused by ignoring the rules deserves/is worth our deep thinking/ careful consideration/reflection.2.We still need to dream/have a dream, but it can’t be realized unless we work hard (on it). 3. It was this experience that enabled/helped me to realize (that) I shouldn't be too busy to miss the gifts/blessings that life brings to me.4. There is a confusing phenomenon that many young parents would rather invest much money in/into early education than travel with kids to expand their horizons.【解析】1.

分析句子可知,本句为一般现在时,主语为The accident,用过去分词短语caused by ignoring the rules作The accident的后置定语。

The accident caused by ignoring the rules deserves/is worth our deep thinking/ careful consideration/reflection.2.

We still need to dream/have a dream, but it can’t be realized unless we work hard (on it).3.

It was this experience that enabled/helped me to realize (that) I shouldn't be too busy to miss the gifts/blessings that life brings to me.4.

分析句子可知,phenomenon后接that引导的同位语从句,同位语从句中涉及到了would rather do sth than do sth的用法。

其中两个动词短语为invest much money in/into early education(很多钱投资在早教上)expand their horizons(扩展视野)。

There is a confusing phenomenon that many young parents would rather invest much money in/into early education than travel with kids to expand their horizons.3. Directions:Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.1.

(It)3.

The pursuit of stability is not a bad thing. (and) There are many times when such an attitude drives us to improve ourselves, challenge difficulties, and climb peaks.【

Don’t drink too much coffee at night, or you won’t be able to sleep.2.

翻译时句中用it作形式主语,真正的主语为从句thatkeeping a happy mind reduces the risk of heart diseases.,从句翻译时要注意动名词作主语。
