In its original sense, however, culture includes all identifying aspects of a racial group, nation, or empire: its physical environment, history, and traditions, its social rules and economic structure, and its religious beliefs and arts. The central beliefs and customs of a group are handed down from one generation to another. It is for this reason that most people regard culture as learned rather than innate. People acquire a culture because they are not born with one. The process by which a person develops a taste for regional foods, accented speech, or an outlook on the world over time, therefore, is known as enculturation (文化适应).Cultures are often identified by their symbols —images that are familiar and coated with meaning. Totem poles (图腾柱) carved with animals and creative figures suggest aspects of the Native American peoples of the Pacific Northwest but more literally represent specific tribes (部落). In Asia and India, the color of yellow is connected with temples while in ancient China it was a color only the emperor ' s family was allowed to wear. Thus, different cultures may respond to asymbol quite differently. For example, to some a flag may represent pride, historical accomplishments, or ideals; to others, however, it can mean danger or oppression. To individuals unfamiliar with cultures outside their own, the beliefs, behaviors, and artistic expression of other groups can seem strange and even threatening. A society that ranks all other cultures against its own standards is considered to be ethnocentric (from the Greek ethnos, meaning “ people, ” and kentros, meaning “ center ” ). A strongly ethnocentric society assumes also that what is different from its own culture is likely to be inferior and, possibly, wrong or evil. All people are ethnocentric to some degree, and some aspects of ethnocentrism, such as national pride, contribute to a well- functioning society. An appreciation for one 'oswn culture, however, does not prevent acceptance and respect for another culture. History documents the long-term vigour and success of multicultural groups in which people from numerous and various cultural backgrounds live and work together. Extreme ethnocentrism, in contrast, can lead to racism —the belief that it is race and racial origin that account for variations in human character or ability and that one ' s own race is superior to all others.87. What does the word “ innate ” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?A. Instinctive.B. Developed.C. Believable.D. Cultivated.88. Which of the following is true according to the passage?A. In my opinion, the most effective way is to learn lessons by heart. If you can recite the text and write it out, you’ve learned it fairly well. And if you can tell, in your own words, what the lesson says you’re a very successful learner indeed. Your English will be quite perfect. This is a difficult task. However, if you try to learn by heart only part of each lesson, you’ll find it not half so hard as you might have thought.Learning this way, you will make rapid progress. Of course, writing is also necessary. It helps you a lot on our way to success in English.Equally important is to feel the language. You should be able to laugh at jokes and be shocked at bad news. When using English, try to forget your mother tongue. Instead of helping you, your own language gets in your way. So, never try to see English through translation.56.In the writer’s opinion, the most effective way in learning English is ________.A. to practise speaking, writing and feeling itB. to forget your own native languageC. to translate everything into his own languageD. to memorize the English words and grammatical rules57. “Instead of helping you, your own language gets in your way.〞This sentence means that memorizing your own language can ________.A. help you to study English wellB. stop you mastering EnglishC. make English easy to learnD. help you notice mistakes58.Equally important is to feel the language. “to feel the language〞 here means________.A. to get a knowledge of English by touchingB. to be able to read and write EnglishC. to translate English into your own by imaginingD. to be able to experience the rich sensation of the languageBWhen we can see well, we do not think about our eyes often. It is only when we can not see perfectly that we come to see how important our eyes are.People who are nearsighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes. Many people who do a lot of close work, such as writing and reading, become nearsighted. Then they have to wear glasses in order to see distant things clearly.People who are farsighted face just the opposite problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have difficulty reading a book unless they hold it at arm’s length. If they want to do much reading, they must get glasses too.Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. This, too, ca n be corrected by glasses. Some people’s eyes become cloudy because of cataracts. Long ago these people often became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them. When night falls, colors become fainter to the eyes and finally disappear. After your eyes have grown used to the dark, you can see better if you use the side of your eyes rather than the centers. Sometimes, after dark, you see a small thing to one side of you, which seems to disappear if you turn your head in its direction. This is because when you turn your head, you are looking at the thing too directly. Men on guard duty sometimes think they see something moving to one side of them. When they turn to look straight at it, they can not see it any more, and they believe they were mistaken. However, this mistake happens because the center of the eye, which is very sensitive in daylight, is not as sensitive as the sides of the eye after dark.59.We don’t know that our eyes are of great importance until ________.A. we think about our eyesB. we cannot see clearlyC. we wear glassesD. we have to do much reading60.According to the passage, a ________ is more likely to be nearsighted.A. tailorB. doctorC. guardD. painter61.People who are farsighted ________ .A. cannot do a lot of close work without glassesB. can only see things that are very close to their eyesC. have difficulty reading a book if they hold it at arm’s lengthD. have the same problem as the nearsighted people62.To see a small thing at night, it is better to look ________ .A. with wide open eyesB. with half shut or narrowed eyesC. straight at itD. in a slightly different directionCTrees are useful to man in three important ways: they give him wood and other useful things, they give him cool places, and they help to stop drought and flood.Unluckily, in many parts of the world, man has not found that the third of these points is the most important. Man wants to make money from trees, so he has cut them down in large numbers, only to find that without them he has lost the best friends he had. And also, he is usually too careless to plant and look after new trees. So the forests slowly disappear. This does not only mean that man will have fewer trees. The results are even worse: for where there are trees, their roots break up soil-make the rain in-and also bind the soil, thus stopping it from being washed away easily; but where there are no trees, the rain falls on hard ground and flows away, causing floods and carrying away the rich top-soil. When all the topsoil is gone, nothing is left but useless desert.63.The most important points of trees to man is ________.A. they help him to make moneyB. they give him coolC. they give him wood and other thingsD. they help him to stop drought and floods64.In many places forests slowly disappear because ________ .A. many trees have been cut down by manB. new trees are not well looked afterC. man has not paid enough attention to planting treesD. all the abovend becomes desert after all trees are cut down because ________ .A. roots of trees break up the soilB. there are too many rainfallsC. strong winds bring a lot of sandD. there are no longer trees to keep the rain and protect the top-soil.66.Which title best fits the passage?A. Trees and ManB. The Function of Tree WoodC. How do People do with Trees?D. The Usage of Tree RootsDLaptop computers are popular all over the world. People use them on trains and airplanes, in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110-year-old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use e-mail to “speak〞 with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a fast-food restaurant or under the trees-anywhere at all!Because of the many changes in computer technology , laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. In addition, the portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources. State higher-education officials are studying how laptops can help students. State officials are also testing laptop programs at other universities, too.At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff use computers. The laptops will allow all teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said,“Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we’re giving students a wi ndow on the world. A child learning to talk does not learn by being corrected all the time: if corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people’s. In the sameway, children learning to do all the other things: they learn to do without being taught to walk, run, climb, whistle, ride a bicycle, compare their own performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes and correct them for himself. We do it all for him. We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants it, what this word says, what the answer is to that problem, whether this is a good way of saying or doing this or not.If it is a matter of right answer, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such routine(常规) work? Our job should be to help the child w hen he tells us that he can’t find the way to get the right answer. They found that one million lives could be saved each year if people washed their hands with soap often. They said that programs to increase hand-washing with soap could be among the most effective ways to reduce infectious disease. Doctors say, many diseases can be prevented from spreading by hand-washing. These include pinworms(寄生虫),influenza(流行性感冒),the common cold, hepatitis(肝炎)A,meningitis(脑膜炎)and infectious diarrhea(腹泻).Hand--washing destroys germs from other people, animals or objects a person has touched. When people get bacteria on their hands, they can infect themselves by touching their eyes, nose or mouth. Then these people can infect other people. The experts say the easiest way to catch a cold is to touch your nose or eyes after someone nearby has sneezed or coughed.Another way to become sick is to eat food prepared by someone whose hands were not clean. The experts say that hand--washing is especially important before and after preparing food, before eating and after using the toilet. People should wash their hands after handling animalsor animal waste, and after cleaning a baby. The experts say it is also a good idea to wash your hands after handling money and after sneezing or coughing. And it is important to wash your hands often when someone in your home is sick. The experts say the most effective way to wash your hands is to rub them together while using soap and warm water. They say you do not have to use special antibacterial soap. Be sure to rub all areas of the hands for about ten to fifteen seconds. The rubbing action helps remove germs. Then rinse(冲洗)the hands with water and dry them.Title: ( 76 )______七、书面表达:(15分)你是王林,申请到一家外资企业工作。

You must first go where there are people. You won’t make friends staying home alone.Joining a club or a group, talking with those who like the same things as you do is much easier. Or join someone in some activity. Many people are nervous when talking to new people. After all meeting strangers means facing the unknown. And it’s human nature to feel a bit uncomfortable about unknown. Most of our fears about dealing with new people comes from doubts about ourselves. We imagine other people are judging us, finding us too tall or too short, too this or too that. But don’t forget that they must be feeling the same way. Try to accept your self as you are, and try to put the other person at ease. You’ll both feel more comfortable.Try to act self-confident even if you don’t feel that way. When you enter a room full of strangers, such as a new classroom, walk tall and straight, look directly at other people and smile. If you see someone you’d like to speak to, say something. Don’t wait for the other person to start a conversation.Just meeting someone new does not mean that you will make friends with that person—friendship is based on mutual liking and “give and take”. It takes time and effort to develop.21. The best topic of the passage may be ________.A. FriendshipB. Making friendsC. Meeting New PeopleD. Facing the Unknown22. I don’t really understand how it happened, but I heard someone yell out, but then my boat, Wild One, went off into the darkness and I was alone in a very rough sea. I then spent five and a half hours in the water. The place where it happened was, oh, about 50 kilometers from shore. It was likely that I wouldn’t see another day, but I always thought I’d overcome the difficulties. At first I was watching out for Wild One. The rest of the crew knew I was gone, so they were sure to come back and look for me. After a while, I saw the boat’s lights when it came looking for me. They were within about 300 meters of me, but the spotlight just missed me. The reason why they didn’t see me was because of the huge waves. You know, I started sailing when I was seven, and started ocean racing when I was about eighteen, but I’d never been overboard before. I believed I was going to survive, but it was very cold, and as the hours passed I started to get desperate—and frozen! It was around 5 am when I saw the lights of a tanker coming towards me. I figured it was probably my last chance. At first, I thought they were going to miss me, and then they made a slight turn and I yelled out “Help!” and they heard me. They covered me with as much dry clot hes as they could, and a guy with me stayed to transfer his body heat to me.24. And Australian people love swimming and going to the beach. But it wasn't always that way.Different Climate, Different habitsWhen Europeans first invaded Australia, the only people here who were good at swimming were the Aboriginal people. The Europeans came from climates where it was too cold to swim. Also some people worried that they would get sick if they wet their whole body. However the warm climate of Australia soon changed their attitude to swimming. At first, only men swam. They swam naked - there were no women to see them.Cover up!By the 1880’s and 90’s visiting the beach was very fashionable and a lot of people went there, especially in warm weather. They wore everyday street clothes - much more than people wear at the beach today. In those days, people believed they should cover most of their body so it would not be seen by the opposite sex. Special bathing costumes were designed for women. These costumes used a lot of cloth and were very heavy when wet, making it difficult to swim.Laws Made and Laws ChangedThe government decided to stop men swimming naked. It passed a law which forbade bathing between 6am and 7pm. Many people objected to this law and wrote letters to the government asking it to change the laws. In 1903, the laws changed; people could swim in the daytime, but they had to wear neck-to-knee costumes. The Shrinking CostumeAs time passed, swimming costumes became smaller and more convenient. At first men and women were covered from neck to knee. Then the arms became bare. Then more of the legs were uncovered. Each new change was regarded by many as shocking and rude and people wrote letters to the newspapers complaining about the new costumes. Nowadays some people go to special "nude (裸的) beaches" to swim naked. However, most people cover their bodies more than they did ten years ago -- not because they think bare skin isshocking -- but to protect their skin from the harmful rays of the sun.28.The climate of Australia _____.A.made European setters think differently about swimmingB.change Eu ropean setters’ swimming costumeC.made European setters hotterD.made European setters swim naked29.During the late 19th century, swimmers should _____.A.hide when they see a person of the opposite sexB.cover their bodiesC, wear many heavy clothes D.take no notice of their clothes30.According to the law just before1903, people must _____.A.not swim in the main daylight hoursB.only swim between 6am and 7pmC. have a bath at 6am and 7pmD.swim with neck-to-knee costumes between 6am and 7pm 31.The last paragraph of the passage states that _____.A.people worry about getting skin cancer from too much sunB.people protect their ten-year-old sons from bare skinC.people are shocked by the sunD.people think it rude to swim with the smaller costumesDChina, known as the “kingdom of bicycle”, will see a quick growth in electric bicycle production in the next five years thanks to the country’s effort s to save energy and improve the environment. The output of electric bikes is expected to maintain an annual growth rate of at least 80 percent in the coming five years. China will churn out 30 million electricity-driven bikes in 2010, compared to 9 million bikes last year, according to a report from the Development Research Center under the State Council and other ministries such as the National Development and Reform Commission. The central government wants to reduce the amount of energy consumption (消耗) by as much as 20 percent within the next five years. That would be achieved through the introduction of new sources of energy and encouraging people to save energy, China Daily reported. The smoke from car exhausts (尾气) is a major cause of pollution darkening the sky in Chinese cities, especially Beijing. Industrial experts on Monday, called on the government to come up with more preferential (优先的) measures to spread the use of electric bikes in China.Electric bike production in China accounts for about 90 percent of the world’s total, making China the world’s biggest producer, consumer and exporter of the energy-efficient vehicle, the report indicated. The country last year sold about 3 million electric bikes to foreign countries, a figure expected to double to 6 million in five years. By 2010, the production value of the electric bike industry in China is expected to be 70 billion Yuan (8.6 billion US dollars), almost four times the current level.32. Grasmere.BChildren are excited to find brightly wrapped(包装的) presents under the tree on Christmas morning. They can't wait to open the wrapping and get the toys that were on their wish lists, such as toy cars. But after the excitement wears off, those toys are usually left to the corner of the toy box and the kids are searching for something else to do. But it doesn't have to be that way.A study from the University of Toronto found that giving your child experiences as a gift, instead of toys, improves your child's intelligence and makes stronger parent-child bonds. "Often the focus is only on whether someone likes a gift rather than focusing on a fundamental purpose of gift giving. Knowing that will foster(培养) relationships between the giver and the receiver,'' said lead researcher Cindy Chan.Chan suggested that when you are buying a holiday gift or birthday gift, you should buy something that kids can experience with you. This can be movie or concert tickets, a CD from a performance you already saw to keep the memory alive. For example, for kids, a trip to a museum, going ice-skating or a book that the family can read together over and over again are valuable gifts. It is found that giving your kids too many toys can be counterproductive(适得其反) and make kids at a loss. The best way to make kids happy is to spend time together. So, if you want happy and intelligent kids, spending time with them and making memories are the best gifts you can give them. That's not to say that there shouldn't be any toys but change the focus from getting things to making lasting memories.1.How do children usually deal with toys after the excitement disappears?A. They put them aside.B.They give them to their friends.C.They add them to the wish lists.D.They throw them into the rubbish bin.2.What should people focus on when buying gifts according to Cindy Chan?A. The advantage of giving toys.B.The purpose of giving gifts.C. A lesson from kids at ChristmasB.The pleasure of giving and receivingC.Valuable gifts: popular among kidsD.Move over toys, and make room for memoriesCBee see, bee do. At least that's the conclusion of research published earlier this month in the journal PLOS Biology, showing that bumblebees learn to solve problems by watching each other. In the first study of its kind in insects, scientists constructed experiments that challenged bees to pull strings in order to access rewards of nectar(花蜜).The scientists hoped their study would throw light on a bigger picture: howsocial learning spreads through a population. In the study, Lars Chittka from Queen Mary University of London and his team made artificial flowers and filled them with artificial nectar made of sugar water. They put the flowers under a clear type of plastic and attached a string. Then they added bees. While most of the insects failed to reach the nectar, a few eventually figured out how to access it, by pulling the string. The team discovered that they could greatly increase the success rate of the bees by first placing them inside a transparent(透明的) box where they could observe an experienced bee pull the string. Then, when the boxed bees were released, they often knew what to do and successfully pulled the string to obtain nectar.Next, the researchers added a bee that was experienced in string pulling to each of three new groups that had never seen the experiment before. Within a short time, about half of all those bees were soon pulling the strings. That result suggests the learned behavior could spread from bee to bee, similar to the way cultural ideas spread in other animals, including people. The experiment suggests that social learning may be more widespread in the animal kingdom than people previously thought.1.What happened after the bee pulled the string?A. It joined others.B.It saw flowers.C. It found water.D.It got nectar.2.What did the boxed bees do after being set free?A.They watched the experienced bee work.B.They imitated the experienced bee.C.They flew directly to the rewards.D.They flew back to the box.3.Why was an experienced bee added to new bee groups?A.To reduce the difficulty of the experiment.B.To watch the process of string pulling.C.To carry the experiment further.D.To keep the bees' interest.4.What does the study find?A.Most animals create their own cultures.B.Strings are particularly attractive to bees.C.Animals may have good social learning ability.D.Bumblebees may be smarter than other bee species.DOne day, when Albert Einstein was a small boy, his father bought him a composs(指南针). It was a small toy to entertain him. Einstein was very pleased as he looked at the "magic," thing turning towards north. For him, the compass was not a toy but a new world. He was a curious child and would often daydream. His father was annoyed with him for the bad reports from his teachers. They told him that the boy was not interested in his studies. He was blamed by his father for being lost in his foolish dreams. On leaving school, his father wanted him to study electrical engineering. But he disliked becoming an engineer. He entered the Zurich Polytechnic Academy to prepare himself for a teaching position in mathematics and physics. Though he finished his studies, he was unable to get a job. Finally, he got a job in an office. In his spare time, he filled his notepaper with difficult mathematical formulas(公式). Some of these later led to great scientific discoveries. When they were published, he became a famous scientist. He could not take his daily walk without being surrounded by reporters. He would only smile at them, and went on with his work in his quiet way.In 1921, Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize. The Queen of Belgium invited him to pay her a visit. He got off the train and walked to the palace. He wasn't willing to take the car sent to pick him up. When the Queen asked him, he looked at her with a smile and answered, "It was a very pleasant walk." Einstein disliked wealth. Peace, he said, was what the world needed, and that could not be bought with money.1.Why did Einstein's father buy him a compass?A. At this point the unwilling parent speaks up,“Alright.Yes,I’ll do it.”I’m secretly relieved because I know there’s real power in sharing volunteer responsibilities among many. The unwilling parent organises the meal schedule, sends out emails, and collects money for end-of-season gifts.Somewhere along the way,the same parent ends up becoming an invaluable member of the team. The coach is able to focus on the kids while the other parents are relieved to be off the hook for another season.Handing out sliced oranges to bloodthirsty kids can be as exciting as watching your own kid score a goal.Still, most of us volunteers breathe a sigh of relief when the season comes to aclose. That relief is coupled with a deep understanding of why the same people keep coming back for more:Connecting to the community(社区)as you freely give yourtime, money, skills,or services provides a real joy.Volunteering just feels so good.In that sense,I’m pretty sure volunteering is more of a selfish act than paid off.On Friday,he will become the first person in his family, originally from El Salvador,to graduate from college. And he’s graduating with university honours. For his honours thesis(毕业论文) he researched unmanned solar-powered(太阳能) airplanes, which BYU students have been building and testing for about 10 years.Bob’s study helps discover the best way to fly a solar-powered airplane so that it uses the least amount of power. The goal is to design and build an airplane that flies uncertainly.Bob’s thesis helps lay the basis for this work.“My parents were always hard-working,” Bob said.“They often tell us hard work leads to success.” Bob’s father taught him to read at the age of 3,and his mother is now a student at Utah Valley University on the way to becoming a dentist.Bob recognised he overcame some obstacles(障碍)to get where he is.For starters,English is his second language. He also faced stereotypes(模式化的形象).Although Bob never doubted that he would be a college graduate, other people believed he wouldn’t because he didn’t come from a family of high income. There were other obstacles as well, but Bob viewed them all as opportunities.Bob’s mother says she feels very happy and proud that her son is about to graduate with honours, and remembers the effort he’s made to get there.“He has worked very hard.He started something, and now he has finished it,” Cathy says.“I have always told camera, with a three-hourbattery life and Gorilla Glass for toughness,is intended for candidmoments, like when a child does something cute that may happen too quickly for you to pull out your smartphone.Onboard the Clips device,it uses machine learning algorithms (计算程序) to help capture scenes. Those algorithms include face recognition.“Once it learns that there’s a face you see frequently,it’ll try to get nice photos of those faces,” said Juston Payne, the device’s product manager. And they also want it to recognise facial expressions, which involved “training it to know what happiness looks like”.The Google team also trained it to recognise what not to shoot —like when a child’s hand is over the lens,or if it is tossed in a dark purse. The only way to see the images is by connecting the camera with your phone,as it has no screen for viewing or editing. Were people concerned it could seem strange?Yes,Payne admitted. But they said they addressed that by making it obvious what it is.A green light on the front signals that it is on.Besides, unlike a camera meant to monitor your home,it is not connected to the Internet.“This product is only possible because of the way I live in New York City, and my neighbours are people I don't know. My city, neighbourhood and block are filled with people who don't know me, don't care to know me, and don't talk to me.I find that it's pretty hard to love people you don't even know. And sometimes, we all, myself included, use that as an excuse not to try. I read Brendan's story recently and was moved. One day, Brendan, a young man in New York, was on the way back to his Brooklyn apartment when a homeless woman called Jackie asked him for money. He said that he had no money. By the end of the week, she asked two more times, and each time he answered. The woman looked sad, so Brendan said, "I am on my way to a job interview. If I get the job, I will take you out for Chinese food."Brendan got the job. He took Jackie out for lunch. That was when their friendship began. They built a strong friendship by supporting each other and spending their birthdays, holidays and difficult times together, over a period of eight years. When Brendan's heater broke, Jackie made a blanket for him. Two days later when he told her that he had lost his job, she left and returned minutes later, bringing him food to eat. She continued to do that during the whole winter. Even with so little, she often gave back.Over these years, Jackie moved from the streets and subway stations into a halfway house, and is now moving into an apartment. To celebrate it, Brendan wanted to do something special for Jackie. He went with her to Target, and helped her to pick out everything she would need for her new apartment.May Brenda's story encourage us to find a new way to honour, serve and love the peoplearound us.1.What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 1 ?A.He often stays indoors.B.He cares about his neighbours.C.He is good at making friends.D.He hardly talks to his neighbours.2.What did Brendan do when Jackie asked him for money?A.He was angry with her.B.He didn't give her any.C.He offered her some food.D.He gave her some spare change.3.What happened after Brendan and Jackie had lunch together?A.They developed a new friendship.B.They helped each other find work.C.They fell in love with each other.D.They discovered they were classmates.4.What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 4 refer to?A.Jackie's finding work at Target.B.Jackie's moving from the streets.C.Jackie's moving into an apartment.D.Jackie's moving into a halfway house.3. No one is sure where and when the expression "apple-pie order" began. It's said that the housewives of New England liked to cut their apples in pieces. Then they filled pie pans with them in an organised way, row upon row. As one writer said, the women of New England loved to have everything in its place. This perhaps explains why it is generally believed that "apple-pie order" began in New England.Another old expression, "apple of discord", conies from an ancient myth(神话), however. The myth says that all the gods and goddesses were sitting around the table to celebrate the marriage of Thetis and Peleus. One of the goddesses—Eris was a troublemaker. She threw a golden apple on the table to be given as a prize to the most beautiful goddess. It was not an easy decision to make. How could they choose among Hera, Athena and Aphrodite? Paris was given the task of deciding. He decided to give the golden apple to Aphrodite. Hera and Athena were very angry and threatened him. This, the myth says, began the long Trojan War.At one time, the tomato was called a love apple. That was a mistake. In the sixteenth century, the Spanish brought the tomato from South America. The Spanish then sold the tomato to Morocco. Italian traders carried it on to Italy. The Italian name for the tomato was "pomo di Moro"—apple of the Moors. When French growers brought it in from Italy, they thought "di Moro" meant "d'amour"—the French word for love. And so "pomo di Moro" became the apple oflove.People believe many things about the apple. One belief is that it has great power of keeping people healthy. A very common expression is "An apple a day keeps the doctor away."Another belief is based on facts. The expression is "One rotten apple spoils the barrel. When an apple begins to go bad, it ruins all the other apples around it in the box. The expression has come to mean that one bad person in a group can cause everyone to act badly.1.What do we know about the phrase "apple-pie order"?A.It began in New England.B.Nobody's sure where and when it began.C.Everyone is sure where it began,D.It has been put into use recently.2.What's the meaning of "apple of discord"?A.Cause of disagreement.B.Situation of danger.C.Everything in agreement.D.Everything in good order.3.What's the purpose of the third paragraph?A.To show us a mistaken idea.B.To tell us a love story about apple.C.To explain how the tomato was called the apple of love.D.To show how the tomato was brought in from South America.4.Which of the following expressions is about health?A.Apple of discord.B.Apple-pie order.C.One rotten apple spoils the barrel.D.An apple a day keeps the doctor away.4. "Long time no see." is a very interesting sentence. When I first read this sentence from an American friend's e-mail, I laughed. I thought it was a perfect example of Chinglish.Obviously, it is a word-by-word literal (字面意思的) translation of the Chinese greeting with ruined English grammar and structure! Later on, my friend told me that it is a standard American greeting. I was too surprised to believe her. Her words could not convince me at all. So I did research on Google. com. To my surprise, there are over 60 thousand web pages containing "Long time no see." This sentence has been widely used in e-mails, letters, newspapers, movies, books, or other possible places. Though it is sort of informal, it is part of the language that Americans use daily. Ironically, if you type this phrase in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the grammar needs to be corrected.Nobody knows the origin of this Chinglish sentence. Some people believe that it came from Charlie Chan's movies. In the 1930s, Hollywood moviemakers successfully created a worldwide famous Chinese detective named "Charlie Chan" on wide screens. Detective Chan liked to teach Americans some Chinese wisdom by quoting (引用) Confucius. "Long time no see." was his trademark... Soon after Charlie Chan, "Long time no see." became a popular phrase in America thanks to the popularity of these movies. Some scholars compare America to a huge melting pot. All kinds of cultures are mixed in the pot together, and they change the colour and taste of each other. American Chinese ,though a minority ethnic group (少数民族) in the United States, is also contributing some changes to the stew! Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the mixed pot.You can have some other examples besides adoption from Chinese, such as pizza from Italian, sushi from Japanese, and déjà vu from French etc. There is a long list! Americans do not just simply borrow something from others. They will also modify it and make it their own, so you would not be surprised to find a tofu and peanut butter hamburger in a restaurant, or to buy a bottle of iced Chinese green tea with honey in a grocery store. Since Americans appreciate Chinese culture more and more nowadays, I believe more Chinese words will become American English in the future. In this way, the American's melting pot keeps adding richness and flavour.1. What did the writer himself feel surprised at?A.The Chinglish expression "Long time no see."B.So many literal translations of the expressions used in America.C."Long time no see." is used as a standard American English greeting.D.Finding out Americans use the expression every day.2.What do the underlined words "melting pot" in Paragraph 4 probably mean?A.Confucius's words.B.Culture mixture.C.A kind of cooked dish.D.American changing cultures.3.According to the passage, what can be inferred?A.Detectives translated the phrase "Long time no see."B.Cultures cannot be changed in the huge melting pot.C.The huge melting pot greatly affects all kinds of languages.D.Hollywood made "Long time no see." popular.4.What is the main idea of the passage?A.Some Chinese expressions are introduced into English.B.You'll not be surprised at a tofu and peanut butter hamburger in a restaurant in America.C.Some American expressions can be used in China.D.American English keeps being enriched by different cultures.二、七选五We achieve our goals one step at a time, doing a little each day. Afraid of it being crashed by cars, so I pulled over, ran across the road and dragged the turtle to safety. But I’d made one big mistake.I had heard that the best way to pick up a turtle without hurting it was picking it by the tail in order not to get bitten. So I’d made that big mistake. While the turtle turned out OK generally, I was determined to figure out how to move a turtle properly. I needed to find someone who dealt with turtles. I found the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre. I talked to Dr. Sue, its Executive and Medical Director.Dr. Sue told me that the organization dealt with a number of aspects of turtle conservation, including rescue, settlement, birth programs, research, and education. Sue explained that southern Ontario is home to a vast majority of turtles in Canada, but is also one of the vastest road networks of the country.“Ninety percent of injured turtles brought in are caused by cars. These turtles spend a lot of time on land. And they do travel many kilometers on land for a variety of reasons, to find a nesting spot, or to hang out for the summer or winter. Turtles know where they want to go. So, just keep them going in the direction they want to go and you may have saved a turtle’s life,” Dr. Sue said.Once an injured turtle arrives at the center, there are medical facilities (设备) ready to go, including an X-ray machine. That’s when the team gets to work with healing injuries, and help their patient.24. Why did the author stop the car?A. To help the turtle.B. To see the thing clearly.C. To prevent a car accident.D. What did Dr. Sue suggest at last?A. Leaving the turtles alone.B. Making Ontario home to turtles.C. Changing the road conditions.D. Helping turtles find nesting spots.27. What does the underlined word “patient” refer to in the last paragraph?A. The director.B. The driver.C. The author.D. The turtle.CHave you been exercising and eating healthy, but when you step on the scale, it says you’ve gained a few pounds? “That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean that your workouts are not effective”, says Jeffrey A. Dolgan, an exercise physiologist in Miami Beach, Florida.“A person’s scale mass (质量) is a combination of muscle, fat, bone, blood, and even the air that we carry in our lungs,” he says. “Immediately after a workout routine, the percentage of mass in each body part can shift as much as 15 percent. So if you’re gaining weight while working out and eating healthy, it’s probably not the type of weight gain that you think it is.The scale can’t tell you how much of your body weight is muscle or fat, which means if your goal is to improve your fitness level, the scale is not the best tool for measuring improvements. When you start to change your body composition with your workouts — by building more muscle mass and decreasing your body fat — your scale weight may increase, while your body fat percentage may decrease. These changes happen over weeks and months (not hours or days) so the scale is useless when tracking them. You may argue that you weigh a few pounds less after a high intensity (强度) training class. Don’t get too excited—it’s just water loss due to sweat. Water makes up approximately 65 to 90 percent of a person’s weight, and variation in water content of the human body can move the scale by ten pounds or more from day to day.So ignore the scale and pay more attention to objective measurement tools like body composition. Keep in mind that if you’re exercising but gaining weight, you may actually look slimmer.28. What can we know from Dolgan’s words from paragraph 2?A. Your weight changes little during a day.B. Your scale mass is affected by many factors.C. Your workout is not effective if you gain weight.D. Your weight is determined only by muscle and fat.29. What will most probably happen after you exercise and eat healthy for 3 months?A. You will weigh more.B. Your muscle mass will decrease.C. Your body fat will increase.D. Your body composition will change.30. How much water may a man weighing 150 pounds have in his body?A. 30 pounds.B. 60 pounds.C. 100 pounds.D. 140 pounds.31. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?A. Why Do We Gain Weight?B. How to Work Out Effectively?C. What Is the Composition of Our Body?D. Why Does My Workout Cause Weight Gain?DFor people suffering from depression, there’s an all-natural treatment they should use—getting more exercise. It could help fight depression, even if people have a genetic risk, new research shows. For the study, researchers collected information from nearly 8,000 people and found those with related genes were more likely to have depression over the next two years after examining them. But that was less likely for people who were more active at the study’s start, even if they had a family history of depression. Higher levels of physical activity helped protect even those with the highest genetic risk of depression. Both high-intensity (高强度) exercise and low-intensity activities were associated with a reduced risk of depression. Adding four hours of exercise a week could lower the risk of a new episode (一段经历) of depression by 17%, according to the study. “Our findings strongly suggest that, when it comes to depression, being physically active has the potential to remove the added risk of future episodes in individuals who are genetically risky,” said lead author Karmel Choi. “On average, about 35 additional minutes of physical activity each day may help people to reduce their risk and protect against future depression episodes.”Depression is a common mental illness globally, with more than 264 million people affected. “Depression is so ubiquitous, and that underlines the need for effective approaches that can impact as many people as possible,” Choi said. And mental health and primary care providers can use the findings to advise patients that there’s something meaningful they can do to lower their risk of depression.32. How did the researchers reach their conclusion?A. By analyzing a mass of data.B. By conducting genetic research.C. By comparing various levels of activity.D. By tracking the subjects for many years.33. What does the study show about depression?A. Physical activity betters medical treatment.B. Exercise is able to decrease and prevent it.C. Different levels of exercise intensity matter the same.D. Exercising 35 minutes daily is the most effective treatment.34. What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in paragraph 4 mean?A. Harmful.B. Complex.C. Unusual.D. Common.35. What is the purpose of the text?A. To discuss a disease.B. To introduce a method.C. To analyze a genetic risk.D. To explain a phenomenon.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

He was given the silver cup.“It isn’t rightly mine,” he said, when he was holding the cup. “It was won two years ago when I was on holiday in…”“ A family was staying at my hotel at that time. Mrs Prig, the mother, was told that I played chess, and she begged me to give her young son a game.‘He’s only ten.’she said, “I’ve been told that he plays quite well.’”“Well, as you can guess, I wasn’t too happy. A player likes the opponent(对手)to play as well as he does. But it was holiday time and I agreed to play. We placed the board(棋盘) in the garden. I hoped it would be quick---and so it was.”“I soon knew that David Prig was no lear ner. After ten minutes his sister came outside and began to play tennis against a wall. The boy seemed to lose interest in our game. He moved a piece(棋子)without care. I gave my attention to the board.”“Call me when you are ready, Mr. Watson,” he said. When I was ready, I looked up. He had gone off to play with his sister. I studied the board, and found I was driven into corner. So it went on with David: a quick move, then tennis, back to the board, then back to his sister. My difficult condition became impossible to change. I was beaten. Oh, so easily, by a ten-year-old chess player. He was the winner---in twenty-eight minutes.“David Prig, a name to remember. I had a chance to use his game today, and it won this cup for me. To him, of course, it is only on e of a hundred, or perhaps a thousand, winning games.”41. Perhaps, you just don’t like them. Or maybe someone nearby doesn’t. Maybe you’re at work, and flowers are not allowed. Assuming(假定)the problem is only that you don’t have time to go out and get flowers, you may be surprised to learn just how easy it actually is.It’s good to get flowers for yourself, but even better to be given them. I’m sure you know this, just as I’m sure there’s someone special in your life who feels the same way. So why not take the chance to make so meone happy, and get them some flowers? I know, you would, but it’s just too much trouble. Well, that’s where you’re wrong! It’s a good excuse, and while it might have worked in the past, I’m afraid it doesn’t work any more. Perhaps you are really too busy to go into town and get some flowers. On the other hand, the fact that you are reading this clearly shows that you have enough time to go online. Nowadays, you can buy anything pretty well online, and yes that includes flowers.By the way, there’s another point to consider here.Price. I’m sure you’ve noticed that you can usually get things cheaper if you buy online, and flowers are no exception(例外).For the same price as a few roses, you could have a full bouquet (串,束)of flowers picked and arranged by an expert. So why are you still here? Go online, and hunt down some flowers! There are plenty of flower shops available(可利用的),and you should have no trouble finding one that delivers near you, especially if you live in a city or a large town. Then you’re just a few clicks away from a beautiful bouquet.44. To share some information about a flowers shop.CLife seems more rushed than ever, but you might be surprised to learn people have more leisure time than 40 years ago. In the past, most men worked 12 hours a day, six days a week. But today, working a 40-hour week, do people enjoy more leisure time? No, at least we don’t feel it. It might because we waste half of all our leisure time watching television. A survey(调查)found that nearly three out of four adults would prefer to watch a movie at home than at the theater. A majority of the survey’s respondents said they were “just too busy” to go to the theater. So if you want more free time: turn it off.The modern technology also changes the way of leisure. Technology makes it easier to get what we want. You had to go to the theatre to hear classical music before. Now with CDs or MP3,you can listen everywhere you like, but also without other audience to share your pleasure.Work-related technology can also affect leisure time and enjoyment. You can feel that your time is never entirely your own. New surveys suggest technology kills the leisure time. For centuries, we have believed that new labor saving devices(设备)will give us more time to explore the arts or visit friends and family. But technology almost never does what we expect. Almost all of us have less leisure time than ever. Computers and communication technologies are destroying the idea of leisure.According to a new study that reported the distinctions between home and the workplace, more and more of us go online from our offices to buy the things and perform the tasks we used to do when we got home. This isn’t what technology is supposed to be doing for us. B ut when new tools make life more difficult and stressful(有压力的)rather than easier and more meaningful, we are unconscious (无意识的)of it.48. We had to work___ more hours in the past in a week than we do now.A. 40B.12C.72D.3249. If want to have more leisure time, we should_____.A. work more to make enough moneyB. work less time to enjoy moreC. buy more modern inventionsD. work 12 hours a day50. When you listen to the MP3, you_____.A. can’t share your pleasure with the othersB. can’t have really funC. can’t listen to it anywhere you likeD. can’t save money52. From the text, we can know____.A. we all clearly know the disadvantages of the modern technologyB. if we want more leisure time, we’d better turn TV offC. we can’t do the tasks we used to do when we got homeD. labor saving devices will give us more free timeD“Wanted by the FBI.” To the murderer, or the bank robber, these are the most frightening words in the world. When the criminal(罪犯) hears them, he knows that six thousand trained persons are after him.Why should he be so afraid? There are hundreds of cities and thousands of villages where he can hide. There are large forests and deserts where he can lose himself. Besides, he’s usually rich with stolen money.Money can make it easier to hide. With money, the criminal can pay a dishonest doctor to operate on his face and make him hard to recognize. Money can pay for a hideout(躲避) in some far-off place. But the criminal knows what happened to public enemies such as John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, and Machine Gun Kelly. They had plenty of money and good hideouts. Yet one by one they were found by the men of the FBI.They know every trick the criminal knows and many more. If he makes just one mistake, they’ll get him. That’s why the man who is hunted can’t sleep. That’s why he become nervous, wh y he jumps at every sound. When he makes a mistake, he’ll no longer be “wanted by the FBI”. He’ll have been caught. The FBI began on May 10,1924. Attorney General Harlan F. Stone chose J. Eegar Hoover, a young lawyer in the Department of Justice, to head the new agency(机构). “What we need is a wholly new kind of police force,” he said. “Criminals today are smart. They use stolen cars and even planes to make their gateways. They have learned to open any lock. The criminal would have discovered science. We can’t beat them with old methods. We have to train officers to work scientifically.”J. Edgar Hoover quietly went ahead with his plans. He picked his men care- fully. They had to be between the ages of twenty-five and thirty- five. He wanted only men with good manners and good character. When working as his officers they would have to meet all kinds of people. Hoover wanted men who could handle a teacup as well as a gun. He chose men so carefully that he made the FBI the hardest service in the world to get into. The FBI cannot help in every police problem. It can look into only certain crimes against the government. Solving all other crimes is the duty of local police forces.53. A man wanted by the FBI will find that money is____.A. not at all usefulB. only helpful for a whileC. necessary for staying freeD. important and useful54. Before he worked with the FBI, J. A man who can “handle a teacup as well as a gun” has both____.A. courage and mannersB. strength and kindnessC. wisdom and energyD. ability and humorEFrogs have very special skin. Besides keeping its insides (内脏) together, the skin of a frog is used for taking in water and breathing. Frogs do not drink the way we do —that is, they do not swallow water. Instead, they take in it through their skin. This not only keeps them properly wet, but also is a way to transport oxygen into their bodies. Therefore, a frog needs to make sure it stays nice and wet! If water is not available (可获得的), frogs will hide themselves in wet dirt. Frogs can also produce a mucus (黏液) over their skin to keep themselves wet.Different types of frogs have different feet which are suited to their habitats and lifestyles. Some frogs have claw-like feet which are meant to help them dig. The legs of a frog are very strong and can help them to jump tw enty times as far as their own length. That’s like us jumping about 100 feet! Have your kids jump like frogs and measure how far they can jump—this may help them appreciate the distance achieved by frogs when they jump.Frogs have an interesting way of eating their food. They have long, sticky tongues that stick out suddenly, catch insects and then roll back into their mouths. Frogs actually have teeth. They are tiny and cone-shaped (圆锥形的) and their function is to hold the insect in place until it is swallowed. A frog’s teeth can be found in a row on the roof of the mouth. Finally, if you’ve ever watched a frog swallow, you will have noted that its eyes close and sink down into its head—these big eyeballs actually push the food from the frog’s mouth down in to its throat.57. The first paragraph mainly tells us_____.A. how frogs huntB. how frogs digC. the special function of frogs’ skinD. where frogs find fresh air58. Sometimes frogs will hide themselves in wet dirt because_____.A. they can swallow taterB. they can get the water they need thereC. it can keep them warmD. the air in the wet dirt is fresh59.Frogs use their teeth to ____________.A. cut their food into piecesB. catch insectsC. keep their food in positionD. push food into their throats60. That’s how thousands of people start their day at Laughter Clubs around the world – and many doctors now think that having a good laugh might be one of the best ways to stay healthy. The first Laughter Club was started in Mumbai, India, in 1995 b y Dr Madan Kataria. “Young children laugh about 300 times a day. Adults laugh between 7 and 15 times a day,” says Dr Kataria. “Everyone’s naturally good at laughing –it’s the universal language. We want people to feel happy with their lives.” There are no w more than 500 Laughter Clubs in India and over 1,300 worldwide. Many doctors are also interested in the effects (效果) of laughter on our health. According to a 5 – year study in the body. Laughter improves our health against illness by about 40%.So, what happens at a Laughter Club? I went along to my nearest club in South London to find out. I was quite nervous at the beginning of the class, to be honest –I wasn’t interested in laughing with a group of strangers, and I was worried about looking stupid. Our laughter teacher told us to clap our hands and say “ho ho ho, ha ha ha,” while looking at each other. However, our bodies can’t tell the difference between fake laughter and real laughter, so they still produce the same healthy effects.Surprisingly, it works! After ten minutes everybody in the room was laughing for real – and some people just couldn’t stop! At the end of the class I was surprised by how relaxed and comfortable I felt. In Asia and India, the color of yellow is connected with temples while in ancient China it was a color only the emperor’s family was allowed to wear. Thus, different cultures may respond to a symbol quite differently. For example, to some a flag may represent pride, historical accomplishments, or ideals; to others, however, it can mean danger or oppression. To individuals unfamiliar with cultures outside their own, the beliefs, behaviors, and artistic expression of other groups can seem strange and even threatening. A society that ranks all other cultures against its own standards is considered to be ethnocentric (from the Greek ethnos, meaning “people,” and kentros, meaning “center”). A strongly ethnocentric society assumes also that what is different from its own culture is likely to be inferior and, possibly, wrong or evil. All people are ethnocentric to some degree, and some aspects of ethnocentrism, such as national pride, contribute to a well-functioning society. An appreciation for one’s own culture, however, does not prevent acceptance and respect for another culture. History documents the long-term vigour and success of multicultural groups in which people from numerous and various cultural backgrounds live and work together. Extreme ethnocentrism, in contrast, can lead to racism — the belief that it is race and racial origin that account for variations in human character or ability and that one’s own race is superior to all others.87. What does the word “innate” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?A. Instinctive.B. Developed.C. Believable.D. Cultivated.88. Which of the following is true according to the passage?A. Different interpretations of a symbol help to distinguish one culture from another.B. An ethnocentric country opens welcoming arms to cultures different from its own.C. Culture consists of some positive features of a racial group, nation or empire.D. People from various cultural backgrounds often reach an agreement on some image.89. What can be inferred from the passage?A. All aspects of ethnocentrism can produce negative effects on a society.B. Racism is unlikely to bring about serious conflicts among different cultures.C. Respect and acceptance of different cultures are a proper cultural attitude.D. Countries with a strong sense of national pride play a superior role in the world.90. Which might be the best title of the passage?A. Culture, the origin of racial superiorityB. Culture, a faithful mirror of historyC. Culture, the vigour of world developmentD. But they may be surprised to learn that they're much luckier than their peers (同龄人) in South Korea and Japan, according to a recently published report, conducted by Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences on the physical and mental health of senior high school students in the three Asian countries.According to the study, among nearly 6,000 high school students in the three countries, Chinese students are the tallest but poorest in physical fitness. Chinese students are on average 168.17cm, compared with 167.61cm for South Korean students and 164.70cm for Japanese students. Chinese students have asked for sick leave more than students in other countries. About 72 percent of South Korean students have never asked for sick and injury leave during high school, compared to 53 percent for Japanese students and 45 percent for Chinese students. Moreover, Chinese students drink alcohol and smoke earlier than South Korean and Japanese students. Around 70 percent of Chinese students have drunk alcohol, compared to 50 percent for South Korean and Japanese students.According to the survey, Japanese and South Korean students suffer more pressure than their Chinese peers. Statistics show 16 percent of students in China said they experienced mental pressure often over the past year, while the numbers in Japan and South Korea are 33 percent and 47 percent respectively (分别). Their worries come from "study", "future after graduation", "friendships" and "relationships with their parents". To go with stress, 57.9 percent of South Korean students sleep the least, less than six hours a day, compared with 46.6 percent of Japanese students and 30 percent of Chinese students.More Chinese students were satisfied with their physical appearance, double that of students in the survey from Japan and South Korea. The report said that over ha lf of students in South Korea had tried to lose weight in the past year, while in China the figure was only 22 percent. In measures of self-worth, such as "I think I am valuable", "I think I am successful", "I can complete many things" and "I won't give up to failure", Chinese students showed greater self-confidencethan students in Japan and South Korea.1.What's the main idea of the second paragraph?A.Chinese teenagers are the tallest, but most unhealthy.B.Chinese students drink the most alcohol and smoke earliest.C.Japanese students ask for the least sick leave.D.Chinese students ask for sick leave most often.2.It can be inferred from the passage that_________.A.Chinese stud ents are luckiest, yet most unsuccessfulB.Chinese students are confident in themselves and luckierC.Japanese students are most stressedD.South Korean students sleep the least3.The worries that c ause students to be stressed come from the following factors EXCEPT __________.A.study and careerB.physical appearanceC.friendshipsD.family relationships2.You may not know a lot of people when you start senior high school. Maybe your friends from junior high school are going to a different senior high school. Even if you know other freshmen(—年级学生), you still feel anxious that you don't know any upperclassmen. How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces? Most senior high schools hold the freshman orientation(迎新会) before school actually starts. It is helpful because you not only learn your way around the building but also get to meet some of your teachers and fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognize a few familiar faces. When you talk to people at orientation, you'll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They're all new to the school and don't know what to expect. Talking about a common concern with your classmates can help you develop friendships. The work in senior high school is something freshmen are probably worried about. It builds on what you learned in junior high school, giving you a more advanced(高深的) knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it's a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.Senior high school also has more after-school activities than junior high school, such as clubs, music and theater groups a nd sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.Junior high school taught you the basics of time management and social skills while providing you with a little extra support and guidance. Some kids feel nervous or a little frightened on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and even a new school. Luckily, these "new" worries only stick around for a little while. Let's find out more about going to a new school. Most teachers kick off the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the stuff you'll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class, too. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often read classroom rules and school rules to you so you'll know what's allowed and what's not. Please pay close attention. You might already know a lot of people in your class on the first day, but it's a great day to make a new friend, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don't know. Make the first move and you'll be glad you did, and so will your new friends!Seeing friends you haven't seen for some time can make the first day a good one. You can make the day feel special by wearing clothes that you really like. Maybe you got a great T-shirt on one of your vacations, or a pair of sneakers. It also can make you feel good to be prepared and have all the things you need, such as pencils, folders, and whatever else you'll need. But make sure that you pack them the night before in case you don't have time in the morning.1.What does the underlined phrase "kick off" in the second paragraph probably mean?A.Start.B.Study.C.Find.D.Teach.2.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us about?A.What to know about a new school.B.How to prepare for a new school.C.What to do on your first day of school.D.How to spend your first day of school.3.According to the passage, you usually do the following things on the first day of school except _________.A.introduce yourselfB.learn about the school rulesC.make new friendsD.go over your new lessons4.If you happen to see an old friend on the first day of school, what will you feel from the passage we know?A.Nervous.B.Sad.C.Happy.D.Worried.4.To most of us, school means classes, teachers, schedules, grades and tests. But for the children at Sudbury Valley School, Massachusetts, school is very different.Firstly, there are no lessons. All the children, aged between 4 and 19, do whatever they want to. There are no teachers —only "staff members". The idea behind this is that you do not need to make children learn, because children want to learn anyway. "You do not need to say to a three-year-old, 'Go to explore your environment.' You can't stop them!" says Daniel Greenberg, a founder of the school. "But if you make children do what you want all day, they will lose all taste for learning."At Sudbury Valley School, you will permit children to talk, read, paint, cook, work on computers, study French, play the piano, climb trees, or just run around. Two boys spent three years just fishing! The other way that Sudbury Valley School is different is that the children can decide the rules. Every week, there is a school meeting where both children and staff have one vote each—even thefour-year-olds. They decide the school rules, how to spend the school budget, and even which staff they want and do not want any more. When the school first opened i n 1968, people said it would never work. But today, the school has 200 students, and 80% of its students go on to college. Even the two boys who went fishing all the time have successful careers today. One of them is a musician and the other is a computer scientist.1.What is the main topi c of the article?A.An unusual school.B.Children's hobbies.C.A school without rules.cation in the US.2.What does the school believe?A.Teachers cannot teach children well.B.Children learn best when they do what they want to do.C.Learning is for adults—children should only play.D.Children should only learn about one thing at a time.3.What does Daniel Greenberg say about three-year-olds?A.They love learning.B.They are very naughty.C.They want to be outside all the time.D.They are too young to learn anything.4.Who has the most power in the school meetings?A.The older children have more power than the younger children.B.A child has more power than an adult.C.The younger children have more power than the older children.D.Everybody has equal power.二、七选五5.Just Go to UniversityFor any student, going to university is one of the most important stages of their lives. 聊城二中英语学科寒假作业一、阅读理解AI remember the first time I got on a horse. When I was a little boy aged two, my mom agreed to let me take a short ride and that was it! From then on, I drove my parents crazy begging for a horse. When I was four, I had mutism, in which children stop speaking in certain social situations. I went days, weeks, months without a sound at school. At most, I might quietly whisper to a friend. I suffered silently through school until I was ten when a psychologist (心理学家) had an idea. He asked me what I wanted more than anything else in the world. He explained I was going to be given a chance to work for that. And I was permitted to whisper the answer in my mother’s ear, “A horse.”I was to get a pony, but I had to live up to my end of the bargain (讲价). I had a list of weekly tasks I had to finish. I had to answer the phone five times per week, something I had never done before. I had to say one word to my teacher at school and the list went on. Pretty hard? But when you hold your pencil the correct way, writing is much easier. 9 Hold it in place with your thumb, and your index (食指) and middle fingers.Let the lines be your guideLined paper is your friend! ALast April, my husband James and I went for a walk in the countryside. We were climbing a hill when I saw a sheep lying on its side and not moving. From afar, it looked as if it was dead, but then I saw a leg move. I went over and saw the head and hooves(蹄)of a lamb coming out of her body. The head had become dry.The sheep was hardly breathing, and I thought it was completely tired. The lamb was not moving. We watched for a few minutes, but there was no movement. So despite knowing nothing about sheep, I said I was going to help.James googled “how to deliver(接生)a lamb”and told me how to do it. One important bit of information was that if the head is out and the two front hooves are tucked(缩拢) under the chin(下巴),that' s the correct birthing position.I knelt down and put one hand around the back of the lamb’s head and one on its chest, so that I could put my hands inside the sheep slightly. Finally, the lamb slipped out into my arms. After a minute, I felt a heartbeat. I felt joyous. When the lamb was breathing, I tried to stand it up but because it had been in the birthing position for so long, its legs kept curling under. The ewe, the lamb’s mother, had started pa ssing a very large afterbirth, and still wasn’t responding. After a while, she stood up and started eating grass as if nothing had happened. So we stayed around her and started “herding” (放牧)her. She slowly went towards the lamb and finally picked up the smell. She gave it a lick and the lamb slowly got to its feet.A week later, James and I went for a drink with friends, and they invited us back for dinner. They had a leg of a lamb in the oven, but I said, "I won't eat lamb anymore. "I haven' t eaten it since.1.
