But straight out of the box, it was already out of date.Shabtai, a coding enthusiast, had an immediate reaction to reinvent. Shabtai ’s solution? To build an app. With 50 million monthly active users globally and nearly400,000 superusers who function much like Wikipedia volunteer editors (editing mapsrather than words), Waze Mobile caught the eye of Google as a revolutionary approachto navigation( 导航 ).Acquired by Google in 2013, Waze ’s value mainly lies in its high rate of user involvement. Unlike traditional navigation apps that simply show directions, Wazeasks its users to report accidents and other road conditions in real time, so otherusers can avoid the traffic by using an alternative route. The goal behind Waze ’s approach is an ambitious one: not just avoid traffic, but end it altogether. Waze is finding new ways to put its loyal and active user base to use to make that vision a reality, including a plan to make carpooling (拼车) cool.To be sure, traffic jams are troubling people all over the world. Waze has beenquietly ahead of the game for some time. In 2013, when Waze was just a small digital-mapping business with limited resources, it had something Google Maps andother competitors didn ’t: richer GPS guidance thanks to its stream of live trafficreports from users. These users were the basis of Shabtai ’s plan to solve for his GPS device ’s “silent ” hardware: he grounded the app in software that could be perpetually updated by users, anywhere and anytime.Waze Carpool is going straight to the heart of traffic jams, trying to get moredrivers off the road and into carpools. The app has already connected tens of thousands of rideseekers with drivers willing to ferry them along a shared route, and that trend could be the answer to a traffic-free future.12. What did Shabtai do when he found his girlfriend ’s gift out of date?A. He improved it.B. He took it apart.C. He put it away.D. He used it anyway.13.What sets Waze Mobile apart from traditional navigation apps?A.It has the most users.B.It can indicate directions.C.It reports road conditions in real time.D.Most users help edit its words.14.What does the underlined word in paragraph 6 probably mean?A. Difficulty.B. Carefully.C. Greatly.D. Constantly.15.What is mainly talked about in the text?A.The rise of carpooling.B.An advanced navigation app.C.The development of Google.D.Traffic problems in the world.

AHe is both a great director and a great animator He is Japan’s Walt Disney.Hayao Miyazaki, the 72-year-old Japanese master of fantasy animation (奇幻动画), one of the most respected animation directors in the world, announced hisretirement on September 6. Here are some key words about his films.Good and evil (邪恶)Miyazaki rarely tells stories in simple good and evil. The worlds he createstend to be complex (复杂的) and unclear. The bad figures often don’t seem so bad once you get to know them. Miyazaki has explained that the lack of clear good andevil is because he sees the 21st century as a complex time, in which old ideas need to be re-examined, even in children’s films.ChildrenThe heroes in Miyazaki’s films are usually children or teens, more often young girls. Sometimes they can see the spirit world; they are curious and friendly, even to strange creatures. The stories often deal with growing up.Sky and waterTwo of Miyazaki’s great loves are the sky and water, and he uses them in related ways. Flight is a forever theme — Miyazaki has never done a film without flyingof some kind. His imagination seems to fly and leave behind the pull of gravity (重力), a force and control that he feels a bound (束缚) from setting him free.Water is another way for Miyazaki to fight gravity. In his films he likes theunexpected floods with crystal-clear water, and objects floating on the surface seem to be supported by magic.PeaceMiyazaki’s negative view of the war goes far more than surface deep. Violence is usually seen as wrong and painful, and Miyazaki’s heroes are often peacemakers.1. What can we know about good and evil from Miyaza ki’s films?A. The figures cannot be simply judged as good or evil.B. He uses his films to show good finally defeats evil.C. The complex time tends to turn good into evil.D. Children should learn to clearly tell good from evil.2. According to the artic le, children in Miyazaki’s films are ______.A. all little teen-aged girlsB. always able to see spiritsC. curious trouble makersD. kind to people and creatures3. Miyazaki’s love for flight may come from ______.A. the relation between sky and waterB. his hate for gravity since his childhoodC. his desire to be free from gravityD. his love for water that can flood the world4. In Miyazaki’s films we may NOT see ______.A. the appealing castle in the skyB. children with the problems of growing upC. objects magically floating on the waterD. a world left in ruins in the end【答案】1. I think the job is getting to be too much for me.”“It will cost 10 dollars,” Jamie said. “If that’s OK,”Mark added.“Oh dear,” Mrs. Grady said disappointedly, “I haven’t been able to get to the bank. I can offer homemade cookies, b ut I realize that’s not what you had in mind.”Mark was going to say that Mrs. Grady could pay them another time, but Jamie cut him off. “We’ll come back later.”Mrs. Grady doesn’t look like the person who’d come to his rescue last summer when Mr. Dunn’s dog, Goldie, had just wanted to play, but Mark didn’t feel comfortable around big dogs. He wanted to call for help, but his tongue seemed locked behind his teeth. Then Mrs. Grady’s front door had flown open. She must have seen him from across t he street. “Hold on, Mark. I’m coming!” “Goldie” she’d called. As soon as Goldie had turned her head, Mrs. Grady had slipped between Mark and the dog. She wasn’t much taller than Mark, but she’d stood firm as a rock in front of him. “Goldie, go home!” Then she’d swept her broom to hurry the dogalong.“Get away!” Goldie had obeyed. When Mark showed thanks to Mrs.Grady, Mrs. Grady laughed.“It was nothing. Good neighbors watch out for each other, don’t they?”And now Mrs. Grady needed Mark as much as he’d needed her last summer. He smiled and waved at Mrs. Grady, then his shovel deep into the snow.“Hey!” Jamie shouted. “What are you doing?”Mark couldn’t explain about Goldie and watching out for neighbors.“I like Mrs. Grady’s cookies,”he said.4. What was the most probable reason why Mrs. Grady couldn’t pay them?A. S he didn’t have enough cash.B. S he couldn’t find the bank.C. She thought it was worthless.D. S he couldn’t afford it.6. According to the story, which of the following word CAN NOT be used to describeMrs.Grady?A. Positive.B. Helpful.C. Brave.D. Hopeful.7. Which of the following proverb can best summarize the story?A. A penny saved is a penny earned.B. Kindness is repaid with kindness.C. A clear conscience.D. Actions speak louder than work.CImagine this scene: it’s blowing outside, and you snuggle (蜷伏) up on the sofa under a warm quilt, chatting and recalling with your closest friends. That content, cosy feeling has a name in Danish --- hygge. And, as Denmark recently won the title of “the happiest country in the world”, the concept of hygge is known to more and more people interested in finding ways to understand this concept.Hygge --- originally from a Norwegian word meaning well-being --- doesn’t have an exact equivalent (等同物) in English. It’s often translated as coziness, or as blogger Anna West told the BBC, “coziness of the soul”. But, as professor Maren Spark explains, “Hygge was never meant to be translated. It was meant to be felt.”Basically, hygge involves creating a warm, cosy atmosphere and enjoying it with your loved ones. Danish winters are long and dark and so achieving hygge is particularly relevant during this season. A typical hygge activity during winter could be enjoying delicious homemade food and light-hearted conversation with friends --- preferably in the warm glow of candlelight, or maybe sipping a glass of wine in the hot tub after a day spent skiing. However, hygge isn’t only limited to the cold winter months --- it can also describe that warm, fuzzy feeling you get after a walk through a forest with friends on summer’s day or a family barbecue in the park. Hygge is meant to be shared.8. Why does the author ask the readers to imagine the scene in thefirst paragraph?A. Help the readers to calm down.B. Introduce the topic of the passage.C. Present the main idea of the passage.D. Remind the readers of their past memories.9. What do the underlined words by Maren Spark mean?A. The translation of the word “hygge” is not good enough.B. Only Danish speakers know what “hygge” means.C. “Hygge” is easy to translate but hard to feel.D. We can get the true meaning of “hygge” by feeling it.10. Which of the following can be best described as a “hygge” activity?A. Skiing in the cold winter months.B. Living through long dark winters.C. Taking afternoon tea with friends.D. Walking alone in the forest.11. What is the main purpose of the author?A. To explain.B. To persuade.C. To comment.D. To advertise.DIn the mid-2000s, Waze Mobile co-founder Ehud Shabtai received a cutting-edge (尖端的) gift from his girlfriend: a GPS. The expensive gift was supposed to be helpful. But straight out of the box, it was already out of date.Shabtai, a coding enthusiast, had an immediate reaction to reinvent. Shabtai’s solution? To build an app. With 50 million monthly active users globally and nearly 400,000 superusers who function much like Wikipedia volunteer editors (editing maps rather than words), Waze Mobile caught the eye of Google as a revolutionary approach to navigation(导航).Acquired by Google in 2013, Waze’s value mainly lies in its high rate of user involvement. Unlike traditional navigation apps that simply show directions, Waze asks its users to report accidents and other road conditions in real time, so other users can avoid the traffic by using an alternative route. The goal behind Waze’s approach is an ambitious one: not just avoid traffic, but end it altogether. Waze is finding new ways to put its loyal and active user base to use to make that vision a reality, including a plan to make carpooling (拼车) cool.To be sure, traffic jams are troubling people all over the world. Waze has been quietly ahead of the game for some time. In 2013, when Waze was just a small digital-mapping business with limited resources, it had something Google Maps and oth er competitors didn’t: richer GPS guidance thanks to its stream of live traffic reports from users. These users were the basis of Shabtai’s plan to solve for his GPS device’s “silent” hardware: he grounded the app in software that could be perpetually updated by users, anywhere and anytime.Waze Carpool is going straight to the heart of traffic jams, trying to get more drivers off the road and into carpools. The app has already connected tens of thousands of rideseekers with drivers willing to ferry them along a shared route, and that trend could be the answer to a traffic-free future.12. What did Shabtai do when he found his girlfriend’s gift out of date?A. He improved it.B. He took it apart.C. He put it away.D. He used it anyway.13. What sets Waze Mobile apart from traditional navigation apps?A. It has the most users.B. It can indicate directions.C. It reports road conditions in real time.D. Most users help edit its words.14. What does the underlined word in paragraph 6 probably mean?A. Difficulty.B. Carefully.C. Greatly.D. Constantly.15. What is mainly talked about in the text?A. The rise of carpooling.B. An advanced navigation app.C. The development of Google.D. Traffic problems in the world.

They fill one with nostalgia(怀旧)in various degrees--some more, some less, and others none. That’s why one has conflicting feelings towards the old photos. Still kept with the current ones, they are even less favored than a daily-used cup, which is always close to the owner. How these pieces of thought influence me!Photos keep our images rather than our sentiment, which may not ren1ain.The image is always there, but not its owner, whom the photo cannot keep, neither can it keep the event.Of course, there are some of the photos still holding my affection, such as those taken with my family members, with favorite playmates, fellow girl-students and best friends, not only in pictures but also in my life and heart. Now,since I have learned all this,I will not allow myself to be included casually in a photo taken with others.I’ll make sure that the friendship can last before I take a photo with somebody.24.Why did the writer have only a few black-and-white pictures?A.She took fewer of them.B.She took photos thoughtlessly.C.She didn’t take good care of them.D.She only liked the bald baby picture.25.What can we get from the old photos according to the writer?A.All the past events.B.Some past happiness.C.All the past excitement.D.The everlasting memory.26.What does the underlined word“sentiment”m paragraph5probably mean?A.Look.B.Thought.C.Feeling.D.Influence.27.What is the writer likely to do when asked to take a photo with others?A.To take the photo happily.B.To refuse the request politely.C.To ignore the request casually.D.To think carefully before.action.CAs an Asian country,Singapore has a reputation for being highly westernized, with English a1nong the country’s four official languages, but a couple of signs found on local buses that have recently become a hit online may say otherwise.Quite different from the English we know, the signs read, for example,“Here cannot go in instead of“No Entry”,and“Here can charge phone"instead of“Charge phone here”.This language that resembles English is called Singaporean English,or“Singlish”.The New York Times calls Singlish“patchwork”because Singapore consists of migrants(移民)from several countries including China,India and Malaysia, and they all speak their own versions of“English”.“Everyone who speaks it shapes it”wrote the newspaper. For example,in Singlish you can easily recognize influences from Chinese, including vocabulary such as“Mee Siam"and“da bao”.Sentence structures like“toilet where”instead of“where’s the toilet”also comefrom Chinese.Interesting and diverse as it may seem, the trend for Singlish js worrying Singapore’s government. It is concerned that the dialect is lowering the country’s English standard and may affect its relationship with visitors. It even started the Speak Good English Movement.Unfortunately, the problem was not solved.Instead,Singlish has boomed, especially among young people who think of it as a sign of being cool and a way of identifying themselves as Singaporean. But this doesn’t mean that Standard English is being abandoned by young people. In fact, they are much more capable than the government gives credit-they can speak both.“We are a nation good at code-switching-we know that the way we speak to friends or drivers must be different from how we act at work or school”wrote Cheryl,a Singaporean author,in Times magazine.“To actively urge us to give up a language that speaks to the very heart of who we are, that so beautifully represents the melting pot of Chinese,Indians,Malaysians and Eurasians that we are,is shortsighted,surely.”28.Why does Singapore have many different versions of English?A.It is made up of migrants.B.It is highly westernized.C.It is influenced by Chinese.D.It is affected by official languages.29.What is the purpose of starting the Speak Good English Movement?A.To stop the new trend.B.To better the relationship.C.To keep the English standard.D.To give the government credit.30.What do the young people think of Singlish?A.It’s interesting.B.It’s their identity.C.It’s a sign of status.D.It’s a way of code-switching.31.What can we learn from what Cheryl said?A.Different people speak different styles of Singlish.B.Singlish is a more beautiful language than others.C.People speak Singlish only to friends and drivers.D.People can use Singlish to express themselves well.DLong before iPhones, the cigarette was the companion of choice for restlessness. And long before Facebook and WeChat,it was tobacco that promised to better your social life. Now,quitting smartphones has become thenew quitting smoking.Of course, technology does not yellow your teeth, cause disease or lead to cancer. But some individuals are so concerned that device addiction is damaging their mental health. In order to reduce their dependence, even in Silicon Valley, people are turning off the messages that constantly buzz for their attention, banning smartphones from the bedroom and, curiously, changing the colours on their screens to a less tempting scale of grey. The big tech companies will have to work out how to respond to this new generation of quitters.Facebook is the first to go public with its attempt, hoping its recent move can make the social network more homely.Last year the tech industry got a bad name-Big Tech with unfortunate echoes of other industries that have faced fierce opposition, including Big Tobacco.Like them, the tech industry has to reduce concern from a new generation of activist shareholders(股东)that are questioning its role in the world. These campaigns are never as fierce as those faced by Big Tobacco. In the1990s,socially responsible investors refused to put money in tobacco stocks. It is far difficult for investors to challenge Big Tech and hard to separate the good these companies do in the world-connecting old friends and giving space for people to share their ideas-from the bad.In the meantime, stopping using technology remains problematic. In The World Without Mind:The Existential Threat of Big Tech,Franklin Foer argues that tech should be seen in a similar way to junk food:a convenience that some reject for more continuing nutrition. So we need to do more to turn the tide.In the same way that public service announcements made smoking around your children taboo(禁忌),we can warn parents against losing themselves in their smartphones while taking care of kids.We can also create no-smartphone zones at dinner.Eventually, smartphones could be banned from all public places and help us give ourattention to the people around us instead.32.How did people keep close relationships with others in the past?A.By smoking.B.By drinking.C.By phoning.D.By dining out.33.Why is the tech industry called Big Tech?A.It plays a bad role in the world.B.It is as big as Big Tobacco.C.It has an unfortunate name.D.It is a giant in Silicon Valley.34.What can we infer from Franklin Foer’s argument about tech?A.It promotes social development.B.It is still favored by some people.C.It is worse than Big Tobacco.D.It offers continuing nutrition.34.Which can be the best title for the passage?A.Creating a No Smartphone Life.B.Smartphones Enrich Our Social Life.C.Smoking Does Greater Harm Than Smartphones Do.D.Quitting Smartphones ls the New Quitting Smoking.第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分〉根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
