next.I really think people have to prioritize their time. It’s the people who can manage their time well who will be the most successful in life. Tom : Yes.But some people won’t succeed under too much pressure .Everyone tends to get impatient at times. And we all expect instant service.I know I hate even a short wait for an elevator. It’s no wonder there are so many stress-related health problems. Jerry : Mm, and people seldom pause to think what’s really important in their lives.I recently read an article in the newspaper that says a successful businessman told his elderly parents that he could buy them a big house, equip it with modern facilities, give them a lot of money , even hire someone to take care of them , but he couldn’t afford to spend one hour a week talking with them. He said he was too busy . Just one hour a week, but he still thought he couldn’t afford it! John : But I don’t think he teally couldn’t afford just one hour a week visiting his parents. It’s not a matter of time, but of his priorities. To him, making money is more important than family values.

CBS: Columbia Broadcasting
Getting to know the main points:
In an age of omnipresent
advertising and oddball marketing techniques, some people are selling the most personal of ad space -- their bodies. Anthony Mason, CBS Business correspondent, has the story. System.
Suggested version:
There is a goldfish swimming in a light bulb. The background is
dark blue, making it very mysterious. The light seems to be on, but the goldfish looks very cozy in the bulb. I wonder how a goldfish could survive in a light bulb when power is on. Maybe it’s just a montage. However, I like its novelty. It’s cool and innovative. I think it encourages us to think outside of the box. Possibility is endless. If the idea comes true, I think it will be quite popular in home decoration. I would buy one.

Unit 1Chapter 1 Napoleon¡¡¡¡Napoleon, born in 1769 in Corsica, was a French soldier who became emperor of the French Empire. He was sent to the military school in France at the age of 10. Actually, Napoleon was not very excellent in most of his subjects but mathematics and military science. When 16, he enrolled in the French army. In that year, he began his military career that brought him fame, power, riches, and, finally, defeat. Napoleon was promoted to the general of the French army at the very young age of 24. a few years later, he became the emperor of the French Empire. Napoleon was really an outstanding military leader and his soldier was extremely loyal to him. Consequently, he gained lots of victories. Once he took control of most of the Europe. However, he was battled by many countries including England, Russia and Austria. He was defeated when attacked Russia. In this campaign he lost most of his army.¡¡¡¡ In 1821, Napoleon, the great conqueror, died alone, abandoned by his family and friends. And he was only 51 years old when died. Chapter 2 PompeiiMore than 2000years ago, Pompeii was a very beautiful city, located on the Bay of Naples. A large number of wealthy Romans spent their summers in this city, to flee the metropolitan noise and heat, same as the modern people do.In 79 CE, a young boy came to visit his uncle in Pompeii. One day, the young boy was looking into the sky. He saw a very large dark cloud rising high into the sky. Rock and ash overflew through the air. What the young boy found was the eruption of volcano, Vesuvius. Even worse, the city of Pompeii lay at the foot of Vesuvius. At the first eruption, about 18000 people were able to escape the terrible catastrophe, to escape death. Unluckily, there were still over 2000 people dead, buried alive under the volcanic ash. The explosion terribly lasted for three days. When the explosion was over, Pompeii was covered by 20feet of volcanic rock and ash. The city of Pompeii was buried and forgotten for 1700 years. It was not until in 1748 that an Italian farmer discovered a part of the city of Pompeii. Before long, archaeologists set out to excavate in the area. As time passed, plenty of th city was uncovered. Nowadays, tourists around the world come to visit the ruins of Pompeii.Unit 2Chapter4 The InternetThe process that information leaves one computer to another computer through networks relies on routers, specialized computers. Their job is to conduct the informant through the networks. Firstly, the information is separated into very small packets, with the address ofthe sender and of the receiver, and the information on how to replace the packets together. Then, the packets are packed off via the Internet. Thirdly, when a packet arrives at a router, the router gets the destination address and then decides the best route to reach the destination for the packet. All the packets might reach the destination in the same route or in different routes. Finally, all packets are placed in to the correct order, when they reach their destination.Unit 3Chapter7 A Tidal WaveMany scientists call tidal wave tsunami, which is the meaning of storm wave in Japanese. A tidal wave is a vey big and fatal wall of water that dashes in from the sea toward the shore. Compared with true tide, which is the regular rise and fall of ocean water at certain time each day, a tidal wave comes up very abruptly and unexpectedly. A tidal wave is caused by an under-water earthquake, called seaquake, the word ¡°sea¡± which means ocean, and the word ¡°quake¡± which means ¡°shake¡± or ¡°tremble¡±. During a tidal wave, the ocean floor shakes and trembles and sometimes shifts. The shifting produces the tidal wave that removes across the ocean at a rapid clip.Tidal waves have killed many people in the past. Nowadays, scientists use a seismograph to predict when a tidal wave will attack land. It is out of the question that it can stop a tidal wave, but it is possible to warn people that a tidal wave is coming, which can save many lives. Unit4Chapter 11 Lincoln and KennedyKennedy and Lincoln were different in living era, family and education backgrounds. Kennedy was born in 1917, lived in the 20th century. He came from a wealthy family which provided him the chance to go to expensive private schools, and graduate from Harvard University. Lincoln was born in 1809 and lived in the 19th century. His family was not rich so that he attended school only one year. But he taught himself law, and then became an outstanding lawyer. However, there are also interesting similarities in their lives. Lincoln began his career as a congressman, so did Kennedy. Lincoln was elected to the House in 1847, and Kennedy was in 1947. It was just 100 years apart. In addition, Lincoln was elected president in 1860, and Kennedy was in 1960. It was also just 100 years apart. Furthermore, they both were president during the period of civil ferment. Lincoln was president during the American civil war, and Kennedy was during the civil rights demonstration.Another interesting similarity was that they both were assassinated while in office. More impressively both of them were shot when they were sitting next to their wives. At last, these two outstanding Americans both had a marvelous impact on the social and political lifeand the imagination of the American people.。

• Julia: I agree with you. It costs much less to watch DVDs at home than go to the movies.
• Dora: I think it’s more relaxing to watch DVDs. You don’t have to worry about bothering others, especially if the movie is sad and makes you fell like crying.
• Jason: Well, you have to get good DVDs. Once I rented Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Unfortunately the DVD player couldn’t read the end. I was very disappointed
• Dora: As a matter of fact, the quality of DVDs is often poorer than that of the movies in the theater. That’s one of the reasons why people still go to the movies. Movies in theaters have better visual and sound effects..
• Jason: That’s too expensive for me. I’ll stick with my DVD player for now. Perhaps we could exchange our DVD movies.

…..
Part 2 — Listening 1
• In one town, there were three longtime friends, Pat, Mike and Bob. Pat and Bob were quite bright, but Mike was rather dull.
• Nathan: How much does it cost?
• Julia: Mm, currently it costs about 2,000 Yuan . Oh, here’s a newspaper. You can find out more about it yourself.

(Julia hands the newspaper over to Nathan.)
• Nathan: Maybe.
• Dora: I read in the newspaper that something new has come out. It’s called an EDVD player. It has better sound and visual quality than a DVD player. Of course it’s more expensive.

• Julia: So you prefer to watch DVDs at home? • Jason: Yes. • Nathan: I prefer watching DVDs because they are cheaper and
more convenient. One more thing, I can choose the DVDs I like. You don’t have too many choices when you go to the cinema.
• If you want to appreciate the authentic art of movies, then you should go to the cinema Nathan: I think it is more romantic to go to the cinema. That’s why many young couples like to go to the movies.
• Nathan: I think one reason for the popularity of DVDs is that it is very convenient to watch them. You can watch one at any time you like, and also do other things at the same time instead of sitting still in front of the big screen for two hours. If you have to do something else, you can stop it. It’s not like when you are in the movie theater, for instance, if you have to go to the restroom, you can’t say,” Stop, wait a minute, please!”

like Jason? • Nathan: No, in fact I didn’t go anywhere. After I handed in

I had a great time watching the movies I’d planned to watch for watch for so long. What did you guys do during the spring break?
• Dora: Mm, me too. And sometimes it’s so crowded. It’s hard to find a good seat.
• Julia: So do you all prefer to watch DVDs? Do you think that DVDs might take the place of movies in the future?

• (Everyone laughs.)
• Dore: Yes, it is really convenient to watch DVDs. You can stop anytime you want, fix a snack, make a phone call, and then come back to the movie. You can play it as many times as you like. Also it’s cheap. If you go to the movie theater, it may cost you 20 Yuan or more, but if you buy a DVD, you just have to pay about 10 Yuan and you can share it with others. Of course, you can rent DVDs. That’s even cheaper.
