BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO HANZHONG

汉中位于陕西省西南部，是镶嵌在秦岭与巴山之间的一块美丽而富饶的盆地。北通关中，南达川渝，西出甘陇，东控荆襄，汉江横贯东西，全市面积2.72万平方公里，人口381万。辖汉台区、南郑县、城固县、洋县、西乡县、勉县、宁强县、略阳县、镇巴县、留坝县、佛坪县和汉中经济开发区。

汉中素有“汉家发祥地”、“中华聚宝盆”之美称，是国家级历史文化名城，中国优秀旅游城市，全国双拥模范城。并分别荣获中国最佳历史文化魅力城市、世界特色魅力城市、中国最美油菜花海称号。

在这块史称“天汉”的古老土地上，曾演绎过一幕幕历史活剧。刘邦、韩信、诸葛亮、曹操等帝王将相在这里屯兵养武、安邦定国；李白、陆游、苏东坡等文人墨客在这里留下了脍炙人口的壮丽诗篇。汉中是刘邦称王、平定三秦、成就汉室基业的发祥地；是诸葛亮六伐曹魏的战略大后方；是丝绸之路开拓者张骞的故里，是造纸术发明家蔡伦的封地，以“两汉”、“三国”为特色的历史文化遗存驰名中外；褒斜栈道及摩崖石刻堪称国之瑰宝。汉朝、汉人、汉族、汉语、汉文化等称谓与汉中一脉相承至今。

汉中自然景色秀丽，风光旖旎，气候适宜，植被丰茂，河塘广布，山川丘水兼有，自然条件十分优越，被公认为是地球上同纬度生态环境最好的地方之一。汉中地处南北气候过渡带，森林覆盖率达52％，有两个国家级自然保护区和四个国家级森林公园，是名副其实的“天然氧吧”，生态环境为西北最佳。这片被巍峨秦岭和苍莽巴山环绕的盆地，被长江两大支流汉江与嘉陵江滋养的秀土，到处堆绿拥翠，自然生态资源十分丰富，各种植物达2900种，其中药用植物1600多种，素有“天然药库”之美称。良好的自然生态招引着众多的珍禽异兽在此栖居，有鸟类335种，鱼类109种，动物307种，大熊猫嬉翠竹，金丝猴闹密林，羚牛古道漫步，朱鹮蓝天飞翔。汉中还是汉江的源头，是国家实施南水北调工程的重要水源涵养地；2005年汉中佛坪国家级自然保护区被联合国教科文组织列入“世界人与生物圈保护区”。

Located in the southwest of Shaanxi Province, Hanzhong covers a fertile basin between Qinling and Bashan Mountains. It links with Central Shaanxi to its north, Sichuan and Chongqing to its

south, Gansu to its west, and Hubei to its east, Hanjiang River going through it from west to east. It covers an area of 27,200 km2 with a population of 3.81 million. Today, Hanzhong comprises Hantai District, Nanzheng County, Chenggu County, Y ang County, Xixiang County, Mian County, Ningqiang County, Lueyang County, Zhenba County, Liuba County, Foping County and Hanzhong Economic Development Zone.

Renowned as “the cradle of Han dynasties” and “a Treasure L and of China”, Hanzhong has been awarded several honors, such as the National Historical and Cultural City of China, Excellent Tourism City of China, and the National Dual-Support Model City. It has also won several other honors including the China’s Best City with Historical and Cultural Charm, A City with Unique World Charms, and the Most Beautiful Rape Flower Sea in China.

Series of live plays took place in Hanzhong, an old heavenly land. Many important historic figures staged history here. For examples, some famous emperors and generals such as Liu Bang, Han Xin, Zhuge Liang, Cao Cao, stationed and trained their armies or ruled here. Some famous literary figures, such as Li Bai, Lu Y ou, and Su Shi, left master works here. Hanzhong was a key strategic base when Zhuge Liang, the then prime minister of Kingdom Shu, fought against the army of Kingdom Wei during Three Kingdom Period. It is the birthplace of Zhang Qian, a pioneer of the ancient Silk Road in Western Han Dynasty. It is also the manor of Cai Lun, the inventor of papermaking arts in Eastern Han Dynasty. With the characteristics of Western and Eastern Han dynasties and Three Kingdom Period, the historical and cultural relics in Hanzhong have been well known both home and abroad. The ancient Baoxie plank road and the cliff stone carvings in Hanzhong have been regarded as the national treasures. For thousands of years, Han Dynasty, Han people, Han language, and Han culture have been closely related to Hanzhong.

Characterized with pleasant natural views, favorable climates, luxuriant vegetation, and many rivers, scattering streams and ponds, Hanzhong enjoys advantageous natural conditions and has been considered as the place with the best ecology on the same latitude. Located in the transitional climatic zone between south and north China, Hanzhong has a forest coverage of 52%. Moreover, with two national nature reserves and four national forest parks, Hanzhong has been appraised a “n atural oxygen bar” that has the best ecological environment in Northwest China. Encircled by Qinling and Bashan Mountains as well as nourished by Hanjiang River and Jialing River, Hanzhong has grand vegetation and rich natural resources. As a “natural storehouse of herbal plants”, Hanzhong owns more than 2900 varieties of plants, among which, the number of medical plants reaches over 1600. With good natural ecology, here live 335 kinds of birds, 109 kinds of fishes and 307 kinds of animals. In this place, plenty of rare birds and animals are enjoying living here: pandas enjoying green bamboo, golden monkeys running among the dense woods, takins strolling along the ancient roads in forests, and crested ibis flying freely in blue sky. As the source place of Hanjiang River, Hanzhong is a key water conservation site in the National Project of South-North Water Diversion. In 2005, Foping National Nature Reserve in Hanzhong got approved on the list of the World Man and Biosphere Reserve promulgated by UNESCO.

汉中是汉家发祥地，其历史悠久。《史记高祖本记》载：“汉中郡以汉水为名”。《汉中府志》载“郡临汉水之阳，南面汉山，故名汉中”。史载东周时期(前451年)秦厉公派左庶长修筑汉
