Teaching Is “One of the Least Popular Jobs in the UK”1 The UK government has just published a report on the future of secondary- school teaching (pupil aged 11-16),and the conclusion of the report is that many secondary schools now face great difficulties in finding people who want to be teachers. Since the 1980s,the number of graduates who say they would “seriously consider” teaching as a career has fallen sharply, from 64% in 1982 to just 17% today. The report suggests that urgent action needs to be taken in order to encourage more intelligent young graduates into teaching.2 The main drawback of secondary teaching, according to the report, is the low salary, Earnings in teaching are much lower than in many other jobs, and this means that fewer and fewer, young people decide to be teachers. Joanne Manners, 24,is a good example: “I graduated in maths last year, and I was thinking of doing a teacher-training course to become a maths teacherbut when I looked into details, it became clear that teaching isn’t a very lucrative (赚钱的)job these days. I saw I could earn twice as much if I worked in marketing or advertising, and so I decided not to become a teacher•”3 It’s not just about the money, however. The survey concluded that another reason why people don’t want to beteachers is that some teenagers behave very badly in school. A lot of schools have problems with discipline, and it seems clear that children do not have the same respect for teachers as in the past. Here’s the view of Dave Hallam,an accountant from London: “I think parents are to blame. They should have stricter rules with their children at home and also teach their children to have more respect for teachers.”4 “I love teaching; it’s my passion. I’ve been a secondary-school teacher of Spanish for ten years now, and although it’s a very demanding job, it’s very satisfying. When I see my students passing their Spanish exams, or singing along to Spanish pop songs, it makes me feel so proud,” says Brian Jones, who works in a secondary school in London. So what does he think the government should do to encourage more people to become teachers? “My view is that the government should reduce the burden of work on teachers. I find that I always have too much work to do.”5 The report is clear that the problem of teacher shortage isa very serious one. It says that the government should raise teachers’ pay significantly, to catch up with workers in other professions. It also suggests that the government could launch a nationwide publicity campaign, with some advertisements on TV and in the newspapers, to show the positive sides of teaching to young people. Another solution could be set a maximum number of hours per week that teachers can work, in order to reduce stress on teachers. “HopefUlly,” the report concludes, “these solutions can improve the poor image of secondary teaching, and increase the number of young people who want to become teachers in the fliture.”22. Why are uniforms so popular in the United States?Among the arguments for uniforms, one of the first is that in the eyes of most people they look more professional than civilian(百姓的)clothes. People have become conditioned to expect superiorquality from a man who wears a uniform. the television repairman who wears uniform tends to inspire more trust than one who appears in civilian clothes. Faith in the skill of a garage mechanic is increased by a uniform. What easier way is there for a nurse, a policeman, a barber, or a waiter to lose professional identity(身份)than to step out of uniform?Uniforms also have many practical benefits. They save on other clothes. They save on laundry bills. They are tax-deductible(可减税的). They are often more comfortable and more durable than civilian clothes.Primary among the arguments against uniforms is their lack of variety and the consequent loss of individuality experienced by people who must wear them. Though there are many types of uniforms, the wearer of any particular type is generally stuck with it, without change, until retirement. When people look alike, they tend to think, speak, and act similarly, on the job at least.Uniforms also give rise to some practical problems. Though they are long-lasting, often their initial expense is greater than the cost of civilian clothes. Some uniforms are also expensive to maintain, requiring professional dry cleaning rather than the home laundering possible with many types of civilian clothes.56. It is surprising that Americans who worship variety and individuality _______.A) still judge a man by his clothesB) hold the uniform in such high regardC) enjoy having a professional identityD) will respect an elevator operator as much as a general in uniform57. People are accustomed to think that a man in uniform _______.A) suggests quality workB) discards his social identityC) appears to be more practicalD) looks superior to a person in civilian clothes58. The chief function of a uniform is to _______.A) provide practical benefits to the wearerB) make the wearer catch the pubic eyeC) inspire the wearer’s confidence in himselfD) provide the wearer with a professional identity59. According to the passage, people wearing uniforms _______.A) are usually helpfulB) have little or no individual freedomC) tend to lose their individualityD) enjoy greater popularity60. The best title for this passage would be _______.A) Uniforms and SocietyB) The Importance of Wearing a UniformC) Practical Benefits of Wearing a UniformD) Advantages and Disadvantages of UniformsPassage TwoQuestions61 to 65 are based on the following passage,Electrical engineering plays a great role in navigation aids through electronics and radar loran plays a very important role. Here three fixed transmitters send radio pulses simultaneously. The position of aship or an airplane can be determined by measuring the time difference with which these pulses the ship.Radio range is another example. Five antennas are arranged at the corners and centre of a square and send radio waves in such a way that the pilot at the receiver hears a constant sound if he is on course or the Mores code A or N, depending on whether he is to the right of left of it. The instrument landing system has proven very valuable in guiding an airplane for landing. Here transmitters similar to those in radio rang control, through special equipment on the plane, give the direction as well as the height of the landing plane. Three additional beacons indicate to the plane its position as well as the landing path. The ground control approach is a simpler technique by which the ground knows the exact position of the plane and just notifies the pilot by radio whether or not he is on course. This technique employs two radars, one with a 30-mile range to search the vicinity of the airport and another of shorter range which is used for the actual landing. Then, of course, there is the radio compass which, with a combination of a transmitter at a known place on the ground and a receiver aboard, gives the airplane or ship its direction. In addition to these, special radars are used by airplane to measure their speed or identify moving targets. The Doppler radar is one example. It is based on the fact that the frequency of a radio wave is increased or decreased depending on whether the transmitter and receiver are moving towards of away from each other. The amount of frequency change can then tell the pilot how fast he is moving with respect to the ground, for example.61. Besides radar, loran plays a very important role. Here “loran” means __.A) electrical aidsB) electronicsC) long range navigationD) navigation radio62.Five antennas and radio waves to the pilot who hears __.A) either a constant sound or the Morse codeB) the Morse code A or NC) a constant soundD) neither a constant sound nor the Morse code63. __ give the direction and the height of the landing plane.A) Radio range controllersB) TransmitterC) Similar transmittersD) Special equipment64. One of the radars employed in the ground control technique is to detect __ of the airport.A) the spaceB) the length of the runwaysC) the insideD) the nearby area65. Special radars are used by airplanes to measure their speed or identify moving targets, because thefrequency of a radio wave __.A) increasesB) decreasesC) changesD) movesPassage ThreeQuestions 66 to 70 are based on the following passage:The aircraft fuel system stores fuel and delivers the proper amount of clean fuel at the right pressure to the meet demands of the engine. A well-designed fuel system ensures positive and reliable fuel flow throughout all phases of flight. Which include changes in altitude, violent maneuvers, and sudden acceleration and deceleration. Furthermore the system must reasonably free from tendency to vapor lock. Which can result from changes in ground and in-flight climatic conditions. Such indicators as fuel pressure gages warning signals and tank quantity gages are provided to give continuous indications of how the system is functioning. The simplest type of fuel system is gravity feed. Which is still in use on many low-powered airplanes. The fuel tanks are mounted above the carburetor(汽化器), with gravity causing the fuel to flow from the tanks to the carburetor. A selector valve is provided to stop the fuel flow or to select a particular tank in the system from which to draw fuel. A strainer filters the fuel before it reaches the carburetor. A drain is provided for removing water and sediment trapped at the strainer. A primer furnishes the additional fuel required for engine starting.Airplanes equipped with a high-output engine require a fuel system that supplies fuel to the carburetor at a positive pressure. The basic source for this pressure is an engine-driven fuel pump but auxiliary fuel pumps or booster pumps are required in every pressure feed system for several purposes:(1) To supply fuel pressure for starting the engine;(2) to supply fuel to the primer system;(3) to serve as an emergency pump in case the engine-driven pump fails.76. Airplanes equipped with a high-output engine require a fuel system that __.A) supplies fuel to the carburetor at a negative pressureB) supplies fuel to the carburetor at a positive pressureC) supplies fuel to the carburetor at neutral pressureD) supplies fuel to the carburetor at any pressure67. To ensure continuous indications of how the fuel system is functioning, we require __ provided.A) the condition of the aircraftB) the density of the fuelC) the parameter of the engineD) fuel pressure gages, warning signals and tank quantity gages.68. Uxiliary fuel pumps are required in each pressure feed system __.A) to supply fuel pressure for starting the engineB) to return fuel to the tankC) to deliver fuel to lubricate the engineD) all of the above69. The aircraft fuel system __.A) stores fuel to meet the demands of the right pressureB) needs any amount of clean fuelC) cleans the fuelD) stores fuel and supplies certain amount of fuel to the engine70. According to the passage, the type of fuel system used in the modern large aircraft is __.A) gravity feedB) pressure feedC) pressure and gravity feedD) jettison feed.PartⅢ TranslationDirections: In this part, there are 10 items that you should translate into Chinese.71. Even airports at high elevation over 4,000 meters can be listed as normal places for it to deliver and carry goods.B747-200F freighter is one number of B747-200 aircraft. Its overall Length is 69.80m, overall height 19.58m; wing span 59.64m; maximum Take-off weight 377.842kg, maximum landing weight 285,779kg. When fully loaded with fuel, it can still carry payload of 52,889kg. By that time, the range will be 11.050km with standard reserve. The freighter is structurally configurated with upper, main and lower part. Main deck is the main cargo compartment. The forward part of the lower deck is the front lower cargo hold. The rear part is aft lower cargo hold. Near the tail of the aircraft there is a bulk cargo compartment, mainly for mailbags and other bulk cargoes. All cargo compartments are pressurized. All pressurized compartments except aft lower hold is air conditioned. The aft lower hold is heated to keep inside temperature above 6 degrees Celsius. It is not air conditioned. Therefore, the main cargo and front lower cargo hold can be used to carry live goods. Especially the main cargo compartment is a fight place to carry valuable animals, which can be fed and taken care of by cargo master in the air.51. Which statement is true according to this passage? DA) B747-200F is by far the largest commercial airliner.B) Sometimes B747-200F can take off and land at the equator.C) Sometimes B747-200F can take off and land at the polar circle.D) Mailbags are often put in a bulk cargo compartment at the rear part of the52. In B747-200F, which compartment can not be used to carry live goods?BA) The front lower cargo hold.B) The aft lower cargo hold.C) A bulk cargo compartment.D) The main cargo hold.53. When fully loaded with fuel, it can still carry payload of 52,889kg.Here “Payload” means.A) Zero fuel weight.B) Manufacturer’s empty weight.C) Maximum takeoff gross weight.D) Design landing weight.54. Where is the best place for some valuable animals to live in this freighter?A) The front upper deck.B) The rear upper deck.C) The main cargo compartment.D) The front lower cargo compartment.55. How many decks are there in this freighter according to its structure?A) One.B) TwoC) ThreeD) FourPassage ThreeQuestions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage:To get an aeroplane into the air and fly it is one problem; to fly it in right direction and land at a point hundreds, perhaps thousands, of miles away presents another set of problems altogether. The process of finding the way from one place to another is known navigation and, as far as aeroplanes are concerned, this frequently has to be done at night, or in cloudy weather, when the ground cannot be seen. The basic aircraft instruments used for navigation, namely the airspeed indicator, the magnetic compass and an accurate clock only give information about what the aircraft is doing in relation to the air through which it is flying. But unless the day is windless, the air as a whole is itself moving in the relation to the ground, so the navigator must calculate what allowances must be made for the action of the wind on his plane at the height at which he is flying.Modern airlines have other navigational aids. Radar allows a pilot to “see” through the darkness of clouds and radio direction-finding equipment can be turned-in to groun d stations so that the aeroplane’s position can be accurately pin-pointed. Of course, on a clear day when the ground is visible navigation becomes a fairly simple matter of locating landmarks, such as towns and rivers, which can be easily recognized.56. T he meaning of the word “navigate” is __C.A) to get an aeroplane into the airB) to fly an aeroplaneC) to find the way from one place to anotherD) to land an aeroplane57. Radar allows a pilot to see __.DA) only during daytimeB) only through the darknessC) only through cloudsD) through the darkness or clouds58. Navigation becomes a fairly simple matter of locating landmarks __BA) at nightB) on a clear dayC) in cloudsD) in bad weather conditions59. Which of the following is not true ?BA) Navigation frequently has to be done at night.B) Navigation has nothing to do with aeroplaneC) Navigation frequently has to be done in cloudy weatherD) Navigation frequently has to be done when the ground cannot be seen.60. Which one of the following is not included in the basic aircraft instruments used for navigation? BA) The airspeed indicatorB) The jet engine.C) The magnetic compass.D) An accurate clock.Questions 61 to 65 are based on the following materials. Read the statement or passage and then choose the best answer to the question. Answer the question on the basis of what is stated or implied in the statement or passage.61. A backpacker must be prepared for climatic extremes. When you hit the trail in the morning, the temperature may be below zero. You have to keep warm but also be able to move comfortably and freely. As the sun comes up, the temperature often climbs rapidly, and you must be able to dissipate heat. But then, as you move around an outcropping of rock or into forest cover, the temperature can drop almost instantaneously. The author suggests that a backpacker must beA.insensitive to coldB.experienced at climbingC.adaptableD.courageous62. A personal computer is a small computer based on a microprocessor; it is a microcomputer. Not all microcomputers, however, are personal computers. A microcomputer can be dedicated to a single task such as controlling a machine tool or metering the injection of fuel into an automobile engine; it can be a word processor, a video game, or a “pocket computer” that is not quite a computer. A personal computer is something different: a standalone computer that puts a wide array of capabilities at the disposal of an individual.个人电脑是一基于微处理器的小型电脑,也是一种微机。

Of major concern to Amtrak and its advertising agency DDB Needham, were the long-distance western routes where ridership had been declining significantly.] At one time, trains were the only practical way to cross the vast areas of the west. Trains were fast, very luxurious, and quite convenient compared to other forms of transportation existing at the time. However, times change and the automobile became America’s standard of convenience. Also, air travel had easily established itself as the fastest method of traveling great distances. Therefore, the task for DDB Needham was to encourage consumers to consider other aspects of train travel in order to change their attitudes and increase the likelihood that trains would be considered for travel in the west. Two portions of the total market were targeted: 1) anxious fliers—those concerned with safety, relaxation, and cleanliness and 2) travel-lovers—those viewing themselves as relaxed, casual, and interested in the travel experience as part of their vacation. The agency then developed a campaign that focused on travel experiences such as freedom, escape, relaxation, and enjoyment of the great western outdoors. It stressed experiences gained by using the trains and portrayed western train trips as wonderful adventures.Advertisements showed pictures of the beautiful scenery that could be enjoyed along some of the more famous western routes and emphasized the romantic names of some of these trains (Empire Builder, etc.). These ads were strategically placed among family-oriented TV shows and programs involving nature and America in order to most effectively reach target audiences. Results were impressive. The Empire Builder, which was focused on in one ad, enjoyed a 15 percent increase in profits on its Chicago56. What’s the author’s purpose in writing this passage?A) To show the inability of trains to compete with planes with respect to speed and convenience.B) To stress the influence of the automobile on America’s standard o f convenience.C) To emphasize the function of travel agencies in market promotion.D)To illustrate the important role of persuasive communication in changing consumer attitudes.57. It can be inferred from the passage that the drop in Amtrak ridership was due to the fact that________.A) trains were not suitable for short distance passenger transportationB) trains were not the fastest and most convenient form of transportationC) trains were not as fast and convenient as they used to beD) trains could not compete with planes in terms of luxury and convenience58. To encourage consumers to travel by train, DDB Needham emphasized __________.A) the freedom and convenience provided on trainsB) the practical aspects of train travelC) the adventurous aspects of train tripsD) the safety and cleanliness of train trips59. The train ads were placed among family-oriented TV programs involving nature and America because ____________.A) they could focus on meaningful travel experiencesB) they could increase the effectiveness of the TV programsC) their profits could be increased by some 15 percentD) most travel-lovers and nervous fliers were believed to be among the audiences60. According to the passage, the Empire Builder enjoyed an increase in ridership and profits because___________.A) the attractiveness of its name and route was effectively advertisedB) it provided an exciting travel exper5ienceC) its passengers could enjoy the great western outdoorsD) it was widely advertised in newspapers and magazines in Chicago and SEattlePassage TwoQuestions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage:Psychologists now believe that noise has a considerable effect on people’s attitudes and behaviors. Experiments have proved that in noisy situations (even temporary ones), people behave more irritably and less cooperatively; in more permanent noisy situations, many people cannot work hard, and they suffer from severe anxiety as well as other psychological problems. However, psychologists distinguish between “sound” and “noise”. “Sound” is measured physically in decibels. “Noise” cannot be measured in the same way because it refers to the psychological effect of sound and its level of “intensity” depends on the situation. Thus, for passengers at an airport who expect to hear airplanes taking off and landing, there may be a lot of sound, but not much noise (that is, they are not bothered by the noise). By contrast, if you are at a concert and two people behind you are whispering, you feel they are talking noisily even if there is not much sound. You notice the noise because it affects you psychologically. Both sound and noise can have negative effects, but what is most important is if the person has control over the sound. People walking down the street with earphones, listening to music that they enjoy, are receiving a lot of decibels of sound, but they are probably happy hearing sounds which they control. On the other hand, people in the street without earphones must tolerate a lot of noise which they have no control over. It is noise pollution that we need to control in order to help people live more happily.61A) can not work in a noisy situationB) will suffer from complete deafness because of noise pollutionC) can be psychologically affected by working in very noisy factoriesD) may cooperate well in a noisy surrounding62. “Sound”, as defined by the psychologists, ____.A) can be measured in the same way that “noise” is measuredB) may be extremely harmful to healthC) is not at all different from “noise”D) can be measured by machines63. The intensity of noise can be measured by ____.A) its effect on people’s hearingB) its decibelC) how much it affects people psychologicallyD) how long it lasts64 According to the passage, which of the following is sound rather than noise?A) A couple’s whisper behind you in the cinema.B) The snore of your roommate.C) The loud motor-horn in the street.D) The sound of airplanes taking off and landing when you are waiting to board plane.65. We can conclude from the passage that we need to control noise pollution if ____.A) we want to stay both psychologically and physically healthyB) we want to have better control over ourselvesC) we want to cooperate wellD) we don’t want to be anxiousPassage ThreeQuestions 66 to 80 are based on the following passage:S 296-010-J00(9) Inspect the compressor for oil leaks (Fig.603)(a)Insert borescope probe in port B 1-0 and observe for oil wetting or staining as follows:(9 )检查压缩机漏油(fig.603 )(a )在B 1-0处插入孔探头,并观察滑油润湿或着色如下:1)View down and forward at the 6 o’clock fan frame strut No.7 trailing edge. It is noise pollution that we need to control in order to help people live more happily.61. According to the passage, people ____A) can not work in a noisy situationB) will suffer from complete deafness because of noise pollutionC) can be psychologically affected by working in very noisy factoriesD) may cooperate well in a noisy surrounding62. We must never forget the solid assurances of sea power and those which belong to air power if it can be locally exercised. I have, myself, full confidence that if all do their duty, if nothing is neglected, and if the best arrangements are made, as they are being made, we shall prove ourselves once again able to defend our island home, to ride out the storm of war, and to outlive the menace of tyranny, if necessary for years, if necessary alone. At any rate, that is what we are going to try to do. That is the resolve of His Majesty's government - every man of them. That is the will of parliament and the nation. Make sure that all the downlock pins of the three landing gears and the nose gear steering bypass pin are removed. Account them for quantity and then give them to the crew.一定要把三个起落架下位锁保险销和前起落架保险销取下,数一下数目后把它们交给机组人员。
