I sometimes help my grandmother make rice dumplings, Dragon boat races are held on Suzhou River. We celebrate this holiday to commemorate Qu Yuan, who was a great poet in ancient China. His country lost a battle. He was so sad that he jumped into a river and died. It was on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. So we celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival on this day.
4. The mid-Autumn Festival
The Mid- Autumn Festival is one of the traditional festivals in China. It’s on the August 1 5 in the lunar calendar. It's my favourite festival. On t he night of this day, the moon looks big, round and bright. People usually eat moon cakes to spend the festival. So every year during festival, you may see different kinds of moon cakes in almost every food store or supermarket. You may also see many people at the post offices send the parcels with moon cakes to their families or friends who are away from their homes. It's really a wonderful time for several friends to get together and have
the delicious moon cakes with the bright moon high in the night sky.
5. The lantern Festival
The Lantern Festival falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month, usually in
February or March in the Gregorian calendar.
The most important activity of this day is watching lanterns. Throughout the Han Dynasty, one emperor ordered to light lanterns in his palace and temples to show respect to Buddha on the 15th day of the first lunar month. Latter, the Buddhist rite developed in to a great festival among common people.
In addition, guessing lantern riddles is really interesting. Lantern owners write riddles on pieces of paper and post them on the lanterns. If visitors know the answer to the riddle, they can pull the paper off and go to the lantern owners to check the answers. If their answers are right, they will get a small gift. As riddle guessing is interesting and full of wisdom, it has become popular among people of all ages.
The third activity is eating yuanxiao on this day. We also call it "tuanyuan"which means"get together". So people eat them and hope they can bring happiness to the family.
6. The Qing Ming Festival
The Qing Ming Festival is one of the 24 seasonal division points in China, falling on April 4-6 each year. After the festival, the temperature rises up and rainfall increases. It is not only a seasonal point that guides farm work, but also a festival of commemoration.
The Qing Ming Festival is a combination of sadness and happiness. This is the most important day of sacrifice. All groups of people at this time offer sacrifices to their ancestors and sweep the tombs of the diseased. Also, they will not cook on this day and only cold food is served. What's worse, traffic on the way to the tombs
becomes extremely jammed.
The customs have been greatly simplified today. After slightly sweeping the tombs, people offer food, flowers and favourites of the dead, then burn paper money or something else and bow before the tomb. In the past, this festival was called “Arbor Day", so it is also a time to plant trees, and trees grow fast later.
This is a meaningful festival to all t he people. I hope people can spend it well.
7. Thanksgiving Day
a. In the United States, the fourth Thursday in November is called Thanksgiving Day.
On that day, Americans give thanks for the blessings they have enjoyed during the year. Thanksgiving Day is usually a family day. People always celebrate with big dinners. Pumpkin pie and Indian pudding are traditional Thanksgiving desserts. Relatives from other cities, students who have been away from home, and many other Americans travel a long way to spend the holiday at home.
