What are the St. Bernard dogs used for?The Great St. Bernard Pass connects Switzerland to Italy. At 2,473 metres, it is the highest mountain pass in Europe. The famous monastery of St. Bernard, witch was founded in eleventh century, lies about a mile away. For hundreds of years, St. Bernard dogs have saved the lives of travellers crossing the dangerous Pass. These friendly dogs, which were first brought from Asia, were used as watchdogs even in Roman times. Now that a tunnel ahs been built through the mountains, the Pass is less dangerous, but each year, the dogs are still sent out into the snow whenever a traveller is in difficulty. Despite the new tunnel, there are still a few people who rashly attempt to cross the Pass on foot.During the summer months, the monastery is very busy, for it is visited by thousands of people who cross the Pass in cars. As there are so many people about, the dogs have to be kept in a special enclosure. In winter, however, life at the monastery is quite different. The temperature drops to -- 30 o and very few people attempt to cross the Pass. The monks prefer winter to summer of they have more privacy. The dogs have greater freedom, too, for they are allowed to wander outside their enclosure. The only regular visitors to the monastery in winter are parties of skiers who go there at Christmas and Easter. These young people, who love the peace of mountains, always receive a warm welcome at St. Bernard's monastery.

新概念英语第三册(共60课)Lesson1 A puma at largePumas are large, cat-like animals which are found in America. When reports came into London Zoo that a wild puma had been spotted forty-five miles south of London, they were not taken seriously. However, as the evidence began to accumulate, experts from the Zoo felt obliged to investigate, for the descriptions given by people who claimed to have seen the puma were extraordinarily similar. The hunt for the puma began in a small village where a woman picking blackberries saw 'a large cat' only five yards away from her. It immediately ran away when she saw it, and experts confirmed that a puma will not attack a human being unless it is cornered(adj. The search proved difficult, for the puma was often observed at one place in the morning and at another place twenty miles away in the evening. Wherever it went, it left behind it a trail of dead deer and small animals like rabbits. Paw prints were seen in a number of places and puma fur was found clinging to bushes. Several people complained of 'cat-like noises' at night and a businessman on a fishing trip saw the puma up a tree. The experts were now fully convinced that the animal was a puma, but where had it come from ? As no pumas had been reported missing from any zoo in the country, this one must have been in the possession of a private collector and somehow managed to escape. The hunt went on for several weeks, but the puma was not caught. It is disturbing to think that a dangerous wild animal is still at large in the quiet countryside.

Future historians will be in a unique position when they come to record the history of our own times. They will hardly know which facts toselect from the great mass of evidence that steadily accumulates. What is more, they will not have to rely solely on the written word. Films, videos, CDs and CD-ROMS are just some of the bewildering amount of information they will have. They will be able, as it were, to see and hear us in action. But the historian attempting to reconstruct the distant past is always faced with a difficult task. He has to deduce what he can from the few scanty clues available. Even seemingly insignificant remains can shed interesting light on the history of early man.Up to now, historians have assumed that calendars came into being with the advent of agriculture, for then man was faced with a real need to understand something about the seasons. Recent scientific evidence seems to indicate that this assumption is incorrect.Historians have long been puzzled by dots, lines and symbols which have been engraved on walls, bones, and the ivory tusks of mammoths. The nomads who made these markings lived by hunting and fishing during the last Ice Age which began about 35,000 B.C. and ended about 10,000 B.C. By correlating markings made in various parts of the world, historians have been able to read this difficult code. They have found that it is connected with the passage of days and the phases of the moon. It is, in fact, a primitive type of calendar. It has long been known that the hunting scenes depicted on walls were not simply a form of artistic expression. They had a definite meaning, for they were as near as early man could get to writing. It is possible that there is a definite relation between these paintings and the markings that sometimes accompany them. It seems that man was making a real effort to understand the seasons 20,000 years earlier than has been supposed.New words and expressions 生词和短语calendarn. CD-ROOMn. The Power of Persistence: Lessons from New Concept English Book 3, Lesson 8Persistence is a powerful force that can transform dreams into reality. As illustrated in New Concept English Book 3, Lesson 8, the story of the man who climbed the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest, teaches us the importance of perseverance and determination in achieving our goals. The man's journey to the summit of Everest was not an easy one. He faced numerous challenges and obstacles, from the extreme weather conditions to the physical and mental toll of the climb. However, he never gave up and pushed himself to the limit, determined to reach his destination. His story is a testament to the fact that with enough persistence and hard work, anything is possible. In our own lives, we often encounter situations that test our perseverance. Whether it's pursuing a career goal, learning a new skill, or working towards a personal goal, we often have to persevere through difficulties and setbacks. It's during these times that we need to rememberthe lesson from the man who climbed Everest: persistence is key.Persistence helps us to stay focused and motivated even when faced with challenges. It gives us the strength to keep going when others may have given up. It is the driving force that propels us towards our goals, pushing us to超越我们的极限 and achieve more than we ever imagined possible. Moreover, persistence teaches us the value of patience. Often, we want results immediately, but true success often requires time and effort. By persevering, we learn to be patient and understand that success is not always instant, but is the result of sustained hard work and dedication. However, it's important to note that persistence does not mean stubbornly sticking to a single path. Sometimes, we need to be flexible and adapt our strategies when faced with obstacles or setbacks. Persistence requires us to be both determined and wise, knowing when to push and when to pivot. In conclusion, the lesson from New Concept English Book 3, Lesson 8, is a powerful reminder of the importance of persistence in our lives. Whether we are climbing literalmountains or figurative ones, we must remember that with persistence and hard work, we can overcome any obstacle and achieve our dreams. Let us draw strength from the story of the Everest climber and never give up on our own journeysof perseverance and success.**坚持的力量:从新概念英语第三册第八课汲取的教训** 坚持是一种强大的力量,能够将梦想变为现实。

During the summer months, the monastery is very busy, for it is visited by thousands of people who cross the Pass in cars.
8 A famous monastery
The Great St. Despite the new tunnel, there are still a few people who rashly attempt to cross the Pass on foot.
