The tradition of carrying or wearing one of each item is said to bring luck and fortune to the newly married couple. Have you ever stoppedto think what the saying really means? What is its origin and what does each item represent? The original saying dates back to the Victoria times and states, “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue and a silver sixpence in your shoe.”Something old A bride may wear or carry something old to represent her continued ties to her family and her old life. Many brides wear a piece of family jewelry as their old items. Some brides wear the wedding dress worn by their mother or grandmother. In many cases, something old may also be something borrowed.Something new Wearing something new is supposed to represent success and hope in the bride’s new life and in her marriage. If the bride purchases her wedding dress new, it may represent her news items, but any item that is new may be used. Something “new” is usually the easiest kind to fill.Something borrowed The borrowed item should be something borrowed from a friend that is happily married. It is said that their happiness will rub off on you and bring lasting happiness to our marriage. Some brides borrow an item of clothing, a piece of jewelry, a handkerchief or perhaps a beaded(带珠子的) purse.Something blue Wearing something blue dates back to ancient times when a blue wedding dress was worn to represent purity ,fidelity and love.Silver sixpence Placing a silver sixpence in the bride’s left shoe is said to be a symbol of wealth. This not only refers to financial wealth, but also a wealth of happiness and joy throughout her married life. Since most brides probably don’t even know what a sixpence is, this part of the tradition is not used very often in modern times. However, if a bride would like to include it in her wedding, she can purchase a silver sixpence from many companies that sell bridal supplies such as garters(袜带) and invitations.24. Why does the first paragraph end with two questions?A. To invite readers to answer them at once.B. To show the importance of this tradition.C. To have readers’ interest and attention.D. To test readers knowledge about wedding.25. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Something old might also be something borrowed actually.B. The part of the tradition “silver sixpence” is never used now.C. The borrowed item can be something borrowed from any friend.D. Something new is usually the most difficult and expensive kind to fill.26. What can we infer from the passage?A. No brides now are not familiar with the silver sixpence.B. Every item represents something good for the new couple.C. The bride will be more beautiful with all these five items.D. Of the five items, something blue is the most important one.27. Which word can replace the underlined word “fidelity” in the sixth paragraph?A. SuccessB. WealthC. LoyaltyD. OpportunityCSometimes people call each other “scared-cat”. But have you ever thought about this expression? When a cat is frightened, its heart starts beating faster, its muscles get tense and thereare changes in the chemicals in its bloodst ream. Although the cat doesn’t realize this, its body is getting ready for action. If the danger continues, the animal will do one of two things. It will protect itself, or it will run away as fast as it can.Something like this also happens to people. When we are excited, angry or scared by other feeling, our bodies go through many physical changes. Our hearts beat faster, and our muscles get tense. All of these changes make us more alert and ready to react. We, too, get ready to defend ourselves or run.Human beings, however, have a problem that animals never face. If we give way to our feelings and let them take over, we can get into trouble. Have you ever said something in anger, or hit somebody and regretted it later? Have you ever shouted at a teacher, told somebody you were lonely, or said you were in love, and then wished later you had kept your mouth shut? It isn't always clever to express your feelings freely.Does this mean that it's smarter always to hide our feelings? No! If you keep feelings of anger, sadness hidden away or bottled up inside, your body stays tense. Physical illnesses can develop, and you can feel disturbed badly inside. It can actually be bad for your health. It isn’t good to keep pleasant feelings inside either; all feelings need to be expressed.Feelings that you keep all bottled up inside don't just go away. It's as if you bought some bananas and put them in a cupboard. You might not be able to see them, but before long you'd smell them. And if you opened the cupboard, chances are you'd see little fruit flies flying all over them. They are bad.You can try to treat feelings as if they were bananas in the cupboard. You can hide them and you can pretend they don’t exist, but they’ll still be around. And at last you’ll hav e to deal with them, just like those bananas.28. When people and animals are aroused by anger or fear, __________.A. they feel very regretful immediatelyB. their muscles get neither tense nor relaxedC. their hearts beat either faster or slowerD. they may get ready to attack or run away29. Why do human beings get into trouble according to the passage?A. They are usually not as alert as animal.B. They sometimes can’t control their feelings.C. They always do something wrong to other people.D. They don’t pay attention to their physical changes.30. What can we infer from the passage?A. Holding in your feelings may lead to unpleasant results.B. Bananas stay fresh longer when they are in a cupboard.C. Feelings will gradually disappear when you hold them in.D. It’s good for your health to keep pleasant feelings inside.31. What is the purpose of this passage?A. To tell us that people’s feelings are like bananas in a cupboard.B. To give us some advice on how to express our feelings.C. To help us deal with feelings in a wise and proper way.D. To prove that it isn’t always wise to express our feelings freely.DDiamonds are considered as the most famous and valuable jewel in the world. The precious stone for its great value is believed to be the symbol of wealth. Diamonds were made as a result of great volcanic heat and pressure. When a volcano is active, it sometimes explodes and causes great damage to the nearby towns. However, at the same time of such a disaster, diamonds were pushed towards the surface of the earth by a number of great volcanic explosions millions of years ago. Thus, it may be very likely to find a diamond after a volcano eruption. Besides, diamonds are also found among the sand and stones of certain river beds, and in a few places on the floor of the sea, for they were washed down the mountain sides by the rain.Diamonds are very rare. There are not many places that produce such precious things in the world. During the last century adventurers form Europe went to Brazil, because they had heard that there were diamonds in the River Amazon. Many of these early diamond miners died of illness or were lost forever in the great forests. But some returned home rich. The earliest known diamonds were found in India many centuries ago. The most recent and exciting discoveries have been made in eastern Russia. But most of the world’s diamonds now come from Congo, from Tanzania------which has the largest diamond mine in the world and also from South Africa.32. What do we know about diamonds according to the passage?A. Diamonds are always accompanied by volcano eruptions.B. Diamonds are created by volcano eruptions.C. Diamonds are considered as a sign of wealth.D. Diamonds could be always found in a few riverbanks.33. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a famous place producing diamonds?A. CongoB. South AfricaC. IndiaD. Western Europe34. What can we know from the third paragraph?A. Diamond mining can be dangerous for the miners.B. Brazil plays a more important role in diamond mining.C. River Amazon has no large diamond mines nowadays.D. Many miners returned home due to the risks in diamond mining.35. What does the underlined sentence mean in the last paragraph?A. Eastern Russia has been famous for diamond mining for a long time.B. The diamond deposit in eastern Russia wasn’t discovered until recently.C. Eastern Russia is not as important as African countries in diamond mining.D. The eastern part of Russia will replace all African countries in diamond mining.第二节When high temperatures are around the country, some things also go up. Here are four things expected to rise along with our desire to stay indoors and beat the heat.①Sales of goods that keep you coolMalls are high on the list of places where people often go for free air conditioning outside home in summer. 36 Goods related to keeping cool, like air conditions, fans or sun careitems, are very popular.②37Pests like stink bugs(椿象) grow fast during summer heat waves, and many agriculture experts are expecting a repeat of last year’s outbreak that harmed fruit and crops, particularly on the East Coast.③Energy bills38 With all those conditioners and fans working, it makes sense that energy bills will be higher than average. 39 “Not only are people going to have extremely high energy bills for July, it will also put increased stress on power plants, and we’re going to see more air pollution because of it,” says Angela Fritz.④ViolenceHeat waves may cause violence, right? Not necessarily, says Richard Larrick, a researcher. He took a unique look at the relationship between violence and heat through baseball. Larrick and his research team examined 57, 294 Major League Baseball games taking place between 1962 and 2017 and found that while heat may increase violence, there always has to be a motive. “40Instead, heat affects a specific form of violence,” he said.A. Air pollutionB. Pest populationC. Rising heat is the expected response in any summer.D. Heat does not directly lead to more violence in general.E. More and more people are worried about their expenses.F. As more energy is used, air-quality problems may occur.G. So it’s not a surprise that some sales jump during heat waves.第三部分英语知识运用第一节完形填空One day when I was 13, my family was working in the fields to clear away old brush when somehow the electric fence sparked (冒火星)and 41.______ a fire. Computer technology helped the researchers to get most exact measurements of the volume of the front and side parts of the brain, which have something to do with intellect and feelings, and decide the human character. As we all know, the back part of the brain, which controls task like eating and breathing, does not contract with age.Contraction of front and side parts—as cells die off—was seen in some people in their thirties, but it was still not found in some sixty and seventy-year-olds.Matsuzawa concluded from his tests that there is a simple way to prevent the contraction—using the head. The findings show that contraction of the brain begins sooner in people in the country than in the towns. “Those with least possibility,” says Matsuzawa, “are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors. White collar workers doing the same work day after day in government offices are, however, as possible to have contracting brains as the farm worker, bus driver and shop assistant.”26. The tradition of carrying or wearing one of each item is said to bring luck and fortune to the newly married couple. Have you ever stopped to think what the saying really means? What is its origin and what does each item represent? The original saying dates back to the Victoria times and states, “somethi ng old, something new, something borrowed and something blue and a silver sixpence in your shoe.” Something old A bride may wear or carry something old to represent her continued ties to her family and her old life. Many brides wear a piece of family jewelry as their old items. Some brides wear the wedding dress worn by theirmother or grandmother. Some brides borrow an item of clothing, a piece of jewelry, a handkerchief or perhaps a beaded(带珠子的) purse.Something blue Wearing something blue dates back to ancient times when a blue wedding dress was worn to represent purity, fidelity and love.Silver sixpence Placing a silver sixpence in the bride’s left shoe is said to be a symbol of wealth. This not only refers to financial wealth, but also a wealth of happiness and joy throughout her married life. Since most brides probably don’t even know what a sixpence is, this part of the tradition is not used very often in modern times. However, if a bride would like to include it in her wedding, she can purchasea silver sixpence from many companies that sell bridal supplies such as garters(袜带) and invitations.24. The part of the tr adition “silver sixpence” is never used now.C. The borrowed item can be something borrowed from any friend.D. Something new is usually the most difficult and expensive kind to fill.CSometimes people call each other “scared-cat”. But have you ever thou ght about this expression? When a cat is frightened, its heart starts beating faster, its muscles get tense and there are changes in the chemicals in its bloodstream. Although the cat doesn’t realize this, its body is getting ready for action. If the dange r continues, the animal will do one of two things. It isn’t good to keep pleasant feelings inside either; all feelings need to be expressed. Feelings that you keep all bottled up inside don't just go away. And at last you’ll have to deal with them, just like those bananas.28. They don’t pay attention to their physi cal changes.30. To prove that it isn’t always wise to express our feelings freelyDDiamonds are considered as the most famous and valuable jewel in the world. The most recent and exciting dis coveries have been made in eastern Russia. But most of the world’s diamonds now come from Congo, from Tanzania------which has the largest diamond mine in the world and also from South Africa32. The eastern part of Russia will replace all African countries in diamond mining.第二节(共五小题,每小题 2 分,共10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,答案写在答题卡上。

In Nazi(纳粹的)Germany she saw the rise of Adolf Hitler and Anti-Semitism. On one occasion in Vienna she witnessed Jews being whipped by members of the Sturm Abseiling (SA). In 1939 Nancy married the wealthy French industrialist, Henri Flocci, in Marseilles. Nancy was in France when the German Army invaded in May 1940. After the French government surrendered, Nancy joined the French Resistance. She worked with Ian Arrow’s group helping British airmen shot down over France to escape back to Britain. In December 1940 the network was betrayed and Nancy was forced to go into hiding. She continued to work for the French Resistance and was eventually arrested while in Toulouse. However, the authorities did not realize they had captured the woman known as the “White Mouse” and she was released after four days.It was now too dangerous to remain in occupied France and Nancy crossed the Pyrenees into Spain before travelling to Britain. She now joined the Special Operations Executive (SOE)and agreed to become a British special agent(特工).On 29th April 1944, Nancy was parachuted into the Auvergne region of France. Her main aim was to locate local soldiers and to provide them with some guns that were being dropped by parachute by the Royal Air Force four times a week.Nancy had the task of helping the resistance to prepare for the armed uprising that was due to coincide with the D-Day landings. She also led a raid against the Gestapo headquarters in Mountucon and a German gun factory. Henri Tardive, one of her comrades in the resistance later said that: “She is the most feminine woman I know, until the fighting starts. Last March it was the rule of Uranus(天王星), and last week astronomers announced what may turn out to be a new planet, though a very small one, in the solar system. The object was first sighted last month by Charles Koala, an astronomer at the Hale Observatories in Pasadena, Calif. Mr. Koala observed a faint trail of light on photographic plates, indicating that something was moving in relation to the background of stars. Other observers have confirmed the discovery. The “mini-planet”, identified for the time being as “Object-Koala”, appears to be about 1.5 billion miles away, between the orbit of Saturn and Uranus, and its diameter(直径)has been estimated at between 100 and 400 miles. Its orbit has not been determined yet, but if the orbit proves to be roughly circular, light that of the major planets, thenew object would probably take 66 to 70 years to make a circuit of the sun. Some astronomers have speculated that Mr. Koala’s discovery may be the first indication of an asteroid (小行星)belt beyond Saturn.29.What may have been found in the solar system according to the first paragraph? ________A.A small new planet B.A new solar systemC.A large new object D.A large new planet30.What can we learn from the second paragraph? ________A.What the object is likeB.How the object was foundC.Where the astronomers liveD.Why the object was moving31.What magazine might this passage be taken from? ________A.Astronomy B.Industry C.Spaceflight D.AgricultureDEveryone knows that if a dog’s ears are up and its tail is wagging vigorously, it is definitely pleased to see you. but now scientists using a robot have found that the way dogs use their tails is more complicated than we thought, and that dogs which wag them to the left may he more friendly. The animal psychologists discovered that when real dogs approached a life-sized robot dog, they were less cautious about it when it was wagging its tail to the left, while if it was wagging its tail to the right, far fewer dogs approached it in a confident manner. In the first experiments, 56 percent of the animals approached the model without hesitation when the tail was wagged to the left, while only 21 percent did so in the other situation. When the researchers excluded(排除)owners from being present, the result were: 31 percent of the dogs approached continuously when the tail was wagging to the left, while only 18 percent did so when it was on the right.Animal psychologist Roger Mug ford said it added to the growing evidence that does were even more complicated communicators than the animals more closely related to man such as monkeys. He said, “We know that dogs, in a sense, have languages, but it is more complicated because it is not just them wagging their tails, but also giving out chemical displays.”He adds, “The research confirms earlier studies suggesting that dogs, like humans, had a left-side preference. If you are going to present a signal to a dog, it is sensible to put it on your left-hand side because that is where dogs, unlike most other animals, tend to look. It is another example of the similarity between dogs and humans. They are a lot more human than we give them credit for. “32.What does it tell us if a dog wags its tail to the right? ________A.It was very energetic.B.It was in a bad mood.C.It might be unfriendly.D.It must be confident.33.What can be inferred from the second paragraph? ________A.Some dogs approach the robot dog confidently.B.Most dogs were afraid to approach the robot dog.C.Some dogs lack confidence with their owners present.D.Dog owners may influence the behavior of their pets.34.What can we learn from animal psychologist’s experiments? ________A.Dogs can communicate more than human beings.B.Dogs have more complicated emotions than monkeys.C.Dogs’ tail-wagging conveys more information than previously believed.D.Dogs’ intelligence can be much higher than any other kind of animal.35.What can we infer from Roger Mug fords words? ________A.The Left-side preference should be studied further.B.Dogs have more in common with humans than we think.C.No other animals show the left-side preference except dogs.D.Dogs have a more complicated language than we people do.第二节(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.答案写在答题卡上.Nowadays, more people lose their jobs and the prices of goods and services steadily increase. 36 . But where do I start? Everything I’m paying for is necessity. There’s nothing I can cut down on.But if you take a careful and objective look at your bills and all the “stuff” you’re paying for, you actually do not need a good majority of them. I’ve put together 5tips that you can follow right now to reduce your costs. 1.Cut Back on Eating out.Maybe you didn’t notice eating out is one of the things at your budget and you can save so much money just by reducing the number of times you eat out. 37 It’s so much cheaper preparing food at home and healthier too. This does not mean that you should never eat out. You can choose special days to eat out like birthdays or anniversaries.2.Reduce Your Electricity Consumption38 This will help reduce your electricity consumption. With CFLs(节能灯)you save so much on power. Also unplug appliances(家用电器)that you’re not using.3.Cut Back on Magazine or Print Subscription(订阅费)Magazines are great but sometimes they come with articles that you don’t really care about so you don’t bother reading them. 39 Review your magazine or print subscriptions to determine which ones to unsubscribe from. You can also draw out a list of topics or categories you like reading about and search for free online alternatives where you can read about the topic of your choice.4.Cancel Your Gym Membership or Go for a Pay-Per-Use Plan.Exercise is important to stay healthy. In fact, you save more money when you stay physically fit than if you are in poor health. But there are more affordable ways to keep fit, if you exercise for health’s sake and no as a body builder or something.Exercise at home or jog around your neighborhood. If you can’t work out without an exercise trainer, try searching for exercise routines on You Tube. If you want to use gym equipment, then you can convert your gym membership style to pay-per-use. 40Of course, you don’t need to practice all of these at once, but if you are really willing to cut down on those costs, then one of these will surely come in handy.A.Start by turning off the lights you’re not using.B.They’re so simple but the results are impressive.C.As an alternative, make more home-cooked meals.D.It’s time for you to take action and do something about your bills.E.That way you pay only when you come to the gym to use the equipment.F.Invest in gym equipment to cut down recurrent costs of gym membership.G.Hose days most of the information or news is available on the Internet for free.第三部分:英语知识运用(共两节,满分55分)第一节完形填空(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项.答案写在答题卡上.A few weeks ago, I was sitting in the window seat of the super-crowded ladies’ compartment in a train to Mumbai.
