教案课程名称新视野商务英语视听说(第四版)(上) 课时班级专业教师系部教研室教材《新视野商务英语视听说(第四版)(上)》1Unit 6 Company PresentationsLearning Objectives(教学目标)2Business Profile(内容概览)What Makes an Effective PresentationA presentation is a prepared talk given by a speaker to one or more listeners. To be effective, the speaker’s message must pass to the listeners—it must be heard and correctly understood. In general, two-way communication is more effective than one-way communication; so, encourage the audience to participate—by asking questions or making comments. In any case, remember that the talk is given for their benefits—not for the speaker’s.So, what are the elements of an effective presentation?●effective organisation of information● effective delivery of information● effective use of language● never forgetting your audience● allowing participation through questions or commentsThe following points may help you identify the skills and techniques you need. Organisation of information● Transparency of structure (have a clear beginning, middle and end)● Organisation of content (clearly identify the main points and supporting points)● Level of information (start in the audience’s area of interest)Delivery of information● Image (decide whether to appear formal or informal, relaxed or high-powered?)● Audience features (know their interests?)● Nonlinguistic techniques (use suitable body language and eye contact)● Linguistic techniques (pay attention to voice audibility and clarity, variation in pace and pitch, pauses, questions and humour)● Technical support (use of visual aids, e.g. slides, flip chart, transparencies and PPTs)Use of language● Vocabulary (choose the right word for spoken rather than written language)● Grammar (assemble the sentences in correct language forms)● Pronunciation (stress words correctly)● Fluency (variation in sentence structure and length)● Speed (link your ideas, and don’t talk too quickly)A brief introduction is always given at the very beginning of the presentation. It should include at least four pieces of information:● What you’re going to talk about;● How long you’ll take;● What your main parts or sections will be;● Whether you’d welcome questions during your talk, or only at the end. This could take as little as 45 seconds, but it will give you time to establish contact with the audience. Don’t only try to impress them by your organisation and obvious preparation. Go out of your way to make some comments on the present situation (e.g. excellent lunch,3weather—anything which shows awareness of the world outside your subject). Beware of jokes, and make as much eye contact as possible. If necessary, give a few facts about yourself and the purpose or background of your talk.Language Expansion(语言扩充)Talking about company profileIntroducing your presentation● I’m going to talk about/explain/inform you about the launch of the new product.● The subject/focus of my talk/presentation is the history of our company.● This should last 30 minutes.● There are three parts in my presentation. They are Company History, Main Markets and People.● If you have any questions, please feel free to interrupt.Introducing your company● Our company provides/manufactures home appliances.● We’re based/headquartered in London.● We’re the general agent for Canon Inc.● We employ more than 60,000 people.● We have more than 150 clients/offices all over the world.● Our products are for both domestic and foreign markets.● Our annual income/revenue is 11 million US dollars.● We came to China in 1995.● Currently, our company is developing very quickly.● Sales have increased/dropped slightly since July.● Production has increased/dropped by 21%.● Profits have gone up by 40%.4Teaching Tips(教学步骤)Pre-viewing● Divide the class into groups of four, with one note-taker in each group.● Ask Ss to exchange ideas within group and ask each note-taker to note down the ideas of his/her group members.● Invite two or three note-takers to report the results of their group discussion.● List the ideas Ss come up with on the board.● See if other groups have something to add.Post-viewing● Go through the structure of the introduction part of the presentation with the class.● Divide the class into groups of three. Ask each group to choose a situation.● Tell Ss to discuss and put together the “four pieces” of the introduction part of a presentation:What about? How long?Main parts or sections Q & A? When?● Get Ss to take turns to give an introduction to their group members.● Encourage Ss to use expressions in Language Focus. Arouse awareness of language formality.● Ask a few students to give their introduction to the whole class.● Invite other Ss to note what they like or dislike about each introduction.● Give comments and suggestions for improvement.Pre-viewing● Divide Ss into group of three or four. Ask them to:☐rank the severity;☐compare their ranking with other group members;☐give explanations;☐change ranking if convinced.● Ask Ss to use different expressions of agreement and disagreement.● Make sure group members share time, and encourage the silent ones to jump in more often.● Ask one student to give his/her ranking before and after discussion. Explain the changes if there are any.● Encourage Ss to think of other factors that lead to failed presentations.5Post-viewingTask 1● Divide the class into groups of three.● Ask Ss to reorganise Joan Copper’s presentation in a logical and clear framework with the help of the flow chart.● Ask Ss to divide the presentation into three parts, i.e., beginning, body, conclusion, each group member dealing with one part.● Choose two or three groups to give complete presentations.● Invite other groups to give comments and suggestions for improvement.Task 2● Give Ss a few minutes to read the cards and get familiar with the given information.● Ss take turns to give the presentation and listeners give reminder when needed.● Circulate and monitor.● Emphasise the importance of delivery and body language.● Choose a few Ss to give the presentation in class.● Have a comment session where the class compares the performance.6Text Bank(扩展阅读)McDonald’s CorporationMcDonald’s is the leading global food service retailer with more than 30,000 local restaurants serving nearly 50 million people in more than 119 countries each day. It is one of the world’s most well-known and valuable brands and holds a leading share in the globally branded fast food segment of the informal restaurant market in virtually every country in which they do business. McDonald’s serves the world some of its favourite foods—world-famous French Fries, Big Mac, Quarter Pounder, Chicken McNuggets and Egg McMuffin. The first McDonald’s restaurant opened in Des Plaines, Illinois by McDonald’s Corporation founder, Ray Kroc, on April 15th, 1955. First day’s revenues—$366.12! In 1965, McDonald’s went public with the company’s first offering on the stock exchange. A hundred shares of stock costing $2,250 dollars that day would have multiplied into 74,360 shares today, worth over $1.8 million on December 31st, 2003, and almost $2.4 million on December 31st, 2004. In 1985 McDonald’s was added to the 30-company Dow Jones Industrial Average.McDonald’s has always been a franchising company and has relied on its franchisees to play a major role in its success. McDonald’s continually seeks qualified individuals to become franchisees, and has added approximately 100 new franchisees to the system each year for many years. There are an increasing number of restaurant opportunities available in small towns and in areas representative of a diverse customer base. An individual must have a minimum of $175,000 of non-borrowed personal assets to qualify financially. Now McDonald’s is popping up in more non-traditional locations like Amoco and Chevron stations, with full menu offerings and dining room seating, just like you’ll find in any traditional McDonald’s.Discussion:1. Have you ever eaten in McDonald’s restaurants? Do you like its food and service?2. Do you think McDonald’s needs to localise to achieve greater success in China?3. Can you suggest an ideal place in your city for a new McDonald’s restaurant? Why?7补充教学资源Video 1Making a startHello, and welcome to Standard Electronics. I’m Geoff Bolton, the Factory Manager in charge of the plant you’ll be seeing today. I know you have come a long way today, so we aim to make your tour both interesting and worthwhile. Before we start the tour, I’d like to give you a brief presentation about the company. It will last about 15 minutes and I’ll be using the flip chart. Since there’s quite a lot to cover, I’d be grateful if you’d hold any questions until the end of my talk.As you can see, I’ve divided up my presentation into three main parts. First of all, we’ll run briefly through the history of the company. Secondly, I’ll tell you something about our main markets—this is important in understanding the production process. And finally, I’ll come to the people—our most important asset.OK! Let’s start with the history. Standard Electronics started out as a private limited company when it was first established in 1985.Video 2What is the point?I’m sorry I’m a bit late... um... I’m not exactly sure how to start this... um... I suppose I should start by telling you something about the brewery... It’s old of course, very old, and... it was founded in 17... 1778. Yes, I think that’s right. So it’s a very old brewery and... um... we use traditional production methods and our products are very, very old... um... very traditional. Um... oh, we also do European type beer and, well, sales have increased a lot over the last year.Of course, we were a family firm. Well, in fact, we still are a family firm. As you know the present owner is Ralph Barrald... um... we continue to run as a family firm and this is important to the corporate image. Well, in fact, this is why we’re here today to discuss the corporate image and decide if we... well, if it needs to change. We also have horses... You may have seen them delivering the beer to the local pubs? Yes?Yes, yes... um... production has actually dropped a little over the last few years, although profits have actually gone up and that’s something we need to discuss... I mean can we continue as a small, independent brewery?8Anyway, that’s about it. So... um... that’s the main question today. So I don’t know whether that helps at all, but it’s all I can think of really, so I, I’ll leave... I’ll leave... I think that’s that, so I’ll leave it there, OK? Right?9。

新编大学英语(第四版)视听说教程1习题答案Unit 6

Unit 6 Think for a changeWarming upReference answers11) long (long time; long hair; long stretch)2) table (table manners; round table; table tennis)3) glass (broken glass; clear glass; eyeglasses)21) A chair can be used:•as a step for kids not tall enough for the basin•as a plant shelf when put upside down•as a bedside table•…2) A coffee mug can be used:•as a flowerpot for growing small plants, such as spring onions and coriander•as a vase•as a container for holding small objects, such as pens, candles, and a sewing kit•…3) A toothbrush can be used for:•cleaning the crawfish•cleaning the keyboard•cleaning containers with small mouths•cleaning shoes•removing the small fiber balls on clothes, such as sweaters and overcoats•…3We can see from the above exercises that creativity really matters. Without creativity, we will not get the flash of inspiration and find the fourth word that the three unrelated words can share, and we will never be able to come up with so many creative ways that an everyday object like a chair, a coffee mug and a toothbrush can be used. The importance of creativity in our personal lives can’t be underestimated. Creativity is part of who we are and how we express ourselves in everyday life. Creativity is not something we are born with, nor is it necessarily a characteristic of high intelligence. It is a matter of using the resources we have to produce original ideas. Artists use creativity to express their ideas and visions through painting, wood carving, sculptures, graffiti, and photography, which provide us with visual feasts. Musicians, singers and songwriters use creativity to make music that touches us. Fashion designers use creativity to create clothes which make us look amazing. Scientists use creativity to invent things that facilitate our lives and change the world.Creativity is everywhere, in the food we eat, in the clothes we wear, in the places we visit, etc. With a creative eye, we find creative things, and with a creative mind, we create things.Listening and speakingNews reportScriptsA group of 30 prominent British and American scientists write an open letter to London’s The Guardian newspaper and say the current process for approving scientific studies is counterproductive and needs to be changed. In the letter, the scientists point out that almost all of the 500 major discoveries of the 20th century were started before 1970, and that many of those discoveries challenged the accepted science of the time and would probably not be funded today. They say that since then, researchers have had to make their academic peers believe the work would have enough benefits to justify the investment of time and money, which limits opportunities for open-ended research. The scientists note that before the 1970s, the funds available were small, but researchers were free to use the money however they saw fit. Nowadays, their proposals must include convincing evidence that the results would be beneficial for national policies. The 30 scientists are calling for a new effort to support independent-thinking researchers like the ones who made major discoveries in electronics, nuclear power, biotechnology, and medicine.Questions:1.Why did the scientists write the letter?2.What do we learn about the major discoveries in the 20th century?3.What kind of research is most likely to be funded today according to the scientists?4.Which of the following is not mentioned as an area where the scientists are calling forinvestment?Reference answersListening and understanding1. C2. A3. A4. BThinking and speakingThe importance of supporting research and development (R&D)The investment in R&D plays a significant role in the overall health and long-term sustainability of the economy of a nation. We think that in the next three to five years more investment should be made in basic research, core technologies, and interdisciplinary research.First, research is indispensable for innovation. General Secretary Xi Jinping has repeatedlystressed the importance of basic research as the source of innovation. Without basic research, there will be no innovation. And we think that more emphasis should be put on the training of basic research skills of the students in institutions of higher learning.Second, to solve the increasingly complex problems, such as climate change, environmental problems, and health problems, we think that more investment should be made in R&D, and the efforts made by researchers across various disciplines need to be united.Third, supporting D&R is good for a nation’s economy. R&D helps an industry to develop, design, and enhance its products, services, technologies, or processes. Continued advances in R&D are crucial to ensuring and increasing economic growth.Research areas to be supportedResearch areas that should be supported include but are not limited to:•space exploration•deep-sea exploration•biotechnology and medicine•(large-scale) integrated circuit•quantum technology•advanced manufacturing technologyConversationScriptsHost: Art and Business is an organization that develops creative partnerships between business and the arts. Peter Jones is going to talk about the company’s ideas. Peter, maybe you could begin by telling our listeners why Art and Business was created? Peter Jones:Well, in the 21st century, productivity is no longer just a matter of machines. The success of a company depends on the creativity of its people. The way to increaseproductivity is to stimulate creativity.Host: And what better way to stimulate creativity than through reading books?Peter Jones: Exactly. Every reader knows that a good book can stimulate the imagination and the intellect, get you thinking along lines you might not have thought of before, andopen up new worlds.Host: So, how can reading help somebody to become a more creative person?Peter Jones: Being creative needs active imaginations. When people interpret fictional scenarios, they are using their imagination. They combine imaginative skills with critical andanalytical skills.Host: Are we talking about the right and left sides of the brain?Peter Jones: Yes. Our logical left side of the brain interprets the language of a book. The creative right side looks at the forms of expression. The left side analyzes the plot while theright side is more interested in the relationships between characters –theemotional aspects.Host: How does this transfer to the world of business?Peter Jones: Creative ideas make businesses more competitive. Shared reading experiences improve creativity, communication, and morale at work.Questions:1. What is Art and Business?2. What does the success of a company depend on?3. What is the best way to stimulate creativity according to the man?4. What kind of books would the man most likely recommend?Reference answersListening and understanding11. D2. B3. A4. C21. F2. F3. T4. F5. TThinking and speakingArt and businessWe’d like to share two examples of integrating art and business.•Example 1Established in 2000, Artrade is a forerunner in e-business dealing in art works. Chinaware, painting and calligraphy, oil painting, coins, arts and crafts, rare collections, and all sorts of art works you can think of are available on the platform. Running 365 days a year and 24 hours a day, its annual sales volume reaches over 10 million yuan. While creating its own brand, Artrade has also witnessed the changes in the purchasing habits of the Chinese people.•Example 2We think Swarovski is a good example of integrating art and business. With the making of the best lead glass crystals in the world as their passion, and with a wide range of colors, forms, and sizes, Swarovski has been welcomed since 1895. It has infus ed people’s lives with glamour.Activities inspiring creativityActivities that inspire creativity include but are not limited to:•writing poetry and prose•playing and listening to music•doing photography•acting•participating in art projects•playing games•traveling•brainstorming•meditatingPassage 1ScriptsCreativity is our ability to look at a problem and come up with a good solution. It has nothing to do with the subject matter or the job. There are creative inventors, but there are also very creative cleaners and teachers. While all of us are creative, we differ in the way that we are and to which extent.Michael Kirton came up with the Adaptation-Innovation Theory. He believes that when we solve problems, we are either more adaptive or more innovative. People who are more adaptive-creative try to do things better. People who are more innovative-creative try to do things differently. For example, to solve the specific problem of smelly cat litter, more adaptive types look for a solution inside the box. They might try to let the cat create less smelly litter, then increase the size of the sand particles, and finally add some refreshing tropical scent. More innovative types think outside the litter box. They come up with cat diapers, cat schools for good manners, or a robocat.Since these two types of people are so different, can they work together in a team? Actually, research indicates that involving different types of people in problem-solving could add a new perspective and make people more careful of drawing fast conclusions or falling into groupthink. The result is a more intelligent problem-solving process.Questions:1. Which of the following is true of creativity, according to the speaker?2. What does Michael Kirton believe?3. Why does the speaker mention cat litter?4. What will happen when adaptive and innovative people work together?Reference answersListening and understanding11. B2. D3. D4. D21) better 2) differently 3) inside 4) increase 5) outside 6) cat schoolsThinking and speakingCharacteristics of adaptors and innovatorsI would see myself as an adaptor because I tend to accept a problem as defined and preferestablished and structured situations. I like things that are predictable, and often feel uncomfortable and even nervous when unexpected things happen. For example, I prefer optimizing my way of doing the school tasks to coming up with an entirely different method. At a time when change is the only predictable thing, I need to improve my way of thinking, my way of doing things, and adapt myself to the fast-changing world.•I think I am an innovator. I often find myself in conflict with the established system, and I hate to accept the generally accepted perception. I like taking risks and feel that a life without risks is not worth living. The UN chose April 21 as World Creativity and Innovation Day recognizing that “citizens and organizations in more than 50 countries around the world had already observed this day, which was first commemorated on April 21, 2002.” The first World Creativity and Innovation Day was observed in 2018.Part IINow the day has grown into a week. The website of World Creativity and Innovation Week says their mission is “to encourage people to use new ideas, make new decisions, and take the steps toward making the world better through creative thinking.”The UN says that innovation should be done keeping in mind every sector of the society. It lays emphasis on creativity and culture as they not only produce economic value, but also have a significant non-monetary value that contributes to inclusive social development, to dialog and understanding between peoples. It urges its member countries to make cultural and creative industries part of their economic growth strategies. The UN says, “These industries are among the most dynamic sectors in the world eco nomy, generating $2.25 billion in revenue and 29.5 million jobs worldwide.”Reference answersListening and understanding11. Creative industries are growing in economic importance for industrialized and post-industrialized nations. The production of lifestyles, cultural experiences, fantasies and images are coming to replace objects and things as the locus of the consumer society. As we can see from the first graph, creative industries accounted for an ever-increasing percentage of the GVA of the DCMS Sectors in UK economy between the years 2011 and 2017, nearly six percent in 2017. Also, the creative industries are a major source of dynamic job creation, providing over six percent of employment opportunities in 2017, as is shown in the second graph.Creative industries in China are also experiencing rapid growth due to a combination of state-owned and private-sector investment. Statistics show a steady increase in the contribution of creative industries to China’s GDP between the years 2011 and 2019, accounting for more than 4% in 2019, totaling nearly 4.14 trillion yuan. I believe that with the development of digital economy, an even faster growth of creative industries can be expected.Viewing and speakingScriptsHey, guys, I hope you’re all doing well and welcome to this week’s video. How good is your thinking game? Stay tuned as we discuss tips that you can use to be an outstanding thinker. Think outside the box is one of the most worn-out business and personal development clichés.While the urge to think outside the box is held in high esteem, it’s evident that there’s an apparent disconnect between what people say they’ll do and what they actually do. How many times have you seen people think outside the box? More importantly, how many times do you think outside the box? In simple terms, thinking outside the box can be described as thinking beyond the norm or being a nonconformist. Put simply, thinking outside the box does not mean that you need to defy gravity. It simply means that you need to be innovative with your ideas and solutions. In today’s video, we’re gonna discuss tips that you can use to think outside the box both in business and beyond. One, learn how to question the status quo regularly. Since childhood, we are bombarded with systems of doing things. We are told that we should go to school, work hard, get good grades, go to college and get that dream job. However, over the years, it’s be come evident that this system of life doesn’t work for everyone. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t go to school and perform well. Education is important. However, sometimes you need to question the norm and learn to ask why. If someone presents you with in formation that you don’t understand, you should challenge yourself to read more and question more. Two, expand your knowledge. We often wound up following the same path due to limited knowledge. To expose your brain to different ideas, you need new knowledge. There are several ways to do this. You can choose to take a class in a different industry. You can also try learning a new culture to help you relate to different people around the world. Lastly, you can read books and novels outside your usual genre to stimulate your mind.Three, mind mapping. Mind mapping is a technique that allows you to map out an idea. Essentially, you’ll have the central concept in the middle of the map, and then expand the idea outwards into other boxes. For instance, I need to create a new blog about digital marketing. Since it was the main idea, I put it in the main box. I then drew other boxes connected to the main idea with different aspects of digital marketing, such as social media marketing, email marketing, content marketing, affiliate marketing, SEO, among other things. I then broke downeach element into smaller branches until they turned into topics I could work with. With my simple mind map, I discovered an easy way to expand an idea.Four, draw an image. Visualize the problem you are facing and draw images to help you solve it. With an image, you can map out all the aspects of your issues and write down solutions to each element. For instance, maybe you have several bills to pay that all have different deadlines. You can draw a box with all the bills you have to pay and accompanying dates. Then have another box with all the income you have coming in on specific dates. As you look at both boxes, you’ll have an easier time remembering everything you need to pay and match it to a date when you have enough income to afford the bill.Five, think like a competitor. Thinking like a competitor in business is extremely beneficial. For this exercise, I would encourage you to have a brainstorming session. Ask yourself or (your) team to think like a competitor by pointing out some of the weaknesses you see in the business and possible solutions for the problems. You can also get ideas for new trends in the industry your business should take advantage of to stay ahead. This tech nique also works in one’s personal life. What are your thoughts on thinking outside the box? Share your comments, and let’s learn from each other.Questions:1. What is the aim of the video clip?2. Which of the following is considered a proper example of thinking out of the box?3. Which field is this video clip mainly targeted at?4. Which of the following is a way of questioning the status quo?5. What are the audience encouraged to do at the end of the video clip?Reference answersViewing and understanding11. C2. B3. A4. A5. D21) challenge yourself 2) different industry 3) new culture 4) central concept5) expand the idea 6) Visualize 7) aspects 8) weaknesses9) new trends 10) stay aheadThinking and speakingCreating a creative atmosphere on campusTo create an atmosphere in which there is no risk in being creative – a place where wild ideas are honored and valued, a harmonious and relaxed atmosphere that inspires students’ innovative thinking, we can:•develop extracurricular activities that encourage creativity and innovation•embed creativity and innovative thinking into the curriculum or course syllabuses•expose students to various creative ideas and projects•inspire students to ask questions, try new things and apply ideas to practical situations •use a mind map more often in the classroom to encourage creativity by stimulating the brain to think in different patterns•…Learning to think outside the boxStep 1•I find the five tips helpful, especially the first two. Nowadays we are too often inclined to believe the accepted norms and follow them. We tend to stay in the comfort zone and do what the others do. This is harmful, and even dangerous. We should keep reminding ourselves that the world is advancing and things are changing, what was appropriate and correct in the past may not be appropriate and correct today. We need to develop critical thinking and question the status quo, especially when we find something we don’t understand or feel confused about. And to update ourselves on the progress in every field, we need to expand our knowledge through more reading, more listening, and more communication with people from different sectors and from different cultural backgrounds.•I like mind mapping and I often practice it. I once read an article and learned that mind mapping was created by Tony Buzan, a leading expert on the brain and learning, and co-founder of the World Memory Championships. A mind map is ideal for brainstorming, planning, information gathering, data presentation, and many other uses. It helps us break down complex topics into smaller, more understandable chunks, and it is great for sharing information and understanding complex topics. What makes a mind map so effective is that it allows us to use both sides of our brain.•I find Tip 4, drawing an image, very useful and I practice it quite often, especially when there are many deadlines I have to meet. I usually make a list of the things that I have to do along with the deadlines. I will then try to prioritize things. In this way, I manage to finish all the things in time.•In my view, the last tip, thinking like a competitor, is not only useful in the business world, but also in sports and other fields. I remember a time in high school when we were taking part in the school table tennis competition. We were lucky enough to enter the final. Our rival team was very strong, being the champion for the previous three years. We knew that there was one very strong player in the rival team who could beat any of us. We spent a long time thinking about how they would arrange their players and how to arrange the players of ours accordingly, and we succeeded in getting our weakest player playing with their strongest one. Their strongest one was wasted in a sense. We won the champion! Our excitement was beyond words and until now I can recall the disappointment on the faces of our rival team.Step 2•being open to dissenting opinions•changing the direction of thinking•meeting people with diverse experiences, views and backgrounds•developing positive emotions to broaden our attention and explore our environment •taking a few moments to think about the beautiful things in our life•asking questions like “What would I do differently if I were starting from scratch?”•…Pronunciation1. Your answer could reveal how creative you are.Michigan State University scientist Jeremy Gray has developed a simple word test to measure creativity. It’s described in the journal Behavior Research Methods. His team showed 193 participants a series of nouns and asked them to respond creatively to each with a verb. “Chair” –for example –could elicit “sit”... or more creatively, “stand.” The participants were also asked to write stories and draw pictures. Those who gave creative answers on the noun-verb test were also judged the most creative in the more traditional areas.Gray and his team are now giving the noun-verb test to participants while they are in an MRI machine to try to identify the parts of the brain that light up when creativity is called for. Their findings could eventually help students, entrepreneurs, scientists, and anyone who depends on innovative thinking.Questions:1. Why did Jeremy Gray develop the simple word test?2. It has a very specific definition, and it transforms aproduct that historically was so expensive and complicated that only a fewpeople with a lot of money and a lot of skill had access to it.Host:You mean the product becomes much more affordable to the general public?Clayton Christensen: Yes, exactly.Host: Could you give us an example of this? I mean that most people are familiar with the computer industry and how that’s developed. Perhaps you can usethat as an example.Clayton Christensen: Yeah, so … at the beginning, the first manifestation of digital te chnology was a mainframe computer which cost several million dollars to buy and ittook years to be trained to operate it.Host: So the general public can’t operate it.Clayton Christensen: Yeah, the largest companies and the largest universities can have one, you know, and we had to take our problem to the center where the expertsolved it for us. But then there’s a sequence of innovations, from themainframe to a mini, to a desktop, to a laptop, and now to a smartphone. That is democratized technology to the point that everybody has access toit around the world.Questions:1. I’m worried thathe’ll be angry with me for not having a physical ex amination for so long. W:Which is more important, the doctor’s feelings or your health? You’d better go if you want to make sure everything is all right with you.It seems that the man worries more about the doctor’s feelings than his own health.2. W: Oh, I’ve got a cold. I’m not used to the cold weather, and it often gets thebest of me. What I need now is some good medicine.M:The best medicine is to keep healthy. I promise you that if you get involved with some sort of physical exercise, you’ll get si ck a lot less. Why don’t you try joining a gym?The woman catches cold easily and believes in taking some good medicine, but the man thinks physical exercise is more important.3. W:Exams are coming up soon. I’ve been so busy with schoolwork that I’vehad a lot of trouble sleeping.M: School is important, but so is your health. Maybe you should talk to a doctor. Doctors see people all the time for this very problem. They can help you.The woman has been so busy with schoolwork that she has had difficulty sleeping. The man believes that health is important that she should see a doctor.4. M: Do you mind if I have a cigarette before we eat?W:Well, actually, I do. If you don’t mind, could you smoke outside? If you want to poison your body and shorten your li fe, that’s your business. But as for me, I want to live long and healthy.M:Don’t you think you’re being a bit too careful?W: Not at all. Studies have shown that second-hand smoke causes cancer too. The woman asks the man to smoke outside because she wants to live long and healthy. She believes second-hand smoke causes cancer too.5. W: Robert, when we last talked, you promised there would be less televisionand junk food, and more exercise in your life. But now you’re becoming quite overweight.M: I know it’s bad, but I really like watching TV. After all we should enjoy ourselves while we are young.W:But you’re risking your health watching TV so much.M:Oh, yes: heart trouble, high blood pressure. But I’d rather die than give up TV.The man once promised he would watch TV less, eat less junk food and have more exercise. But he believes it is more important to enjoy himself, although the woman says he’s risking his health watching TV so much.Ⅲ. Listening InTask 1: DietsIf you’re a young lady in yo ur twenties, you may be either on a diet or wondering which diet to follow. Indeed, people are so concerned with their appearance that the word “diet” has lost its original meaning. It now has the same meaning as “weight loss diet”. There was a time when w omen bound their waists to have a nice figure. Then came Twiggy, a British supermodel most famous in the 1960s, and since then everyone has wanted to look like a twig. Because of this trend, many diets have become popular. It is not uncommon to meet young girls who look weak enough to be blown away in the wind, yet they are still talking about diets! However, extreme diets can lead to health problems. Many such dieters may end up with very serious eating disorders. Princess Diana suffered from an excessively strong appetite; Karen Carpenter, a popular singer of the 1970s, died of the loss of appetite. You should know that looking good is important but not when it comes at the risk of your health and life. Better eating habits and proper exercise are all you need to be fit and look good.1. A2.C3.B4.B5.CTask 2: Culture Shock(D=Doctor; S=Student)D: Hello, I’m Dr. Black. How’re you feeling?S: I’m not feeling well, doctor.D: What seems to be the problem?S: I don’t know. I just feel tired all the time. I want to sleep all day. I’m not interested in studying or being with people.D: How long had this been going on?S: Almost one month now.D: Are there any other symptoms?S: I’m just tired.D: Do you have many friends?S: I don’t really have many here. I’m an international student.D: I imagine that many things about your life here are different from your home.S:Yeah, my life’s changed a lot. Foods, customs, socializing…even body language and gestures are all different from those in my own country.D: How long have you lived here?S:Almost three months now. It seems much longer; it’s a struggle for me to get used to the new way of life here.D:Hmm. Well, let’s check you over. (a few minutes later) Well, I don’t see anything physically wrong with you. Your heart is strong. Lungs are clear.Your blood pressure is normal.S: Then what do you think is wrong with me, doctor?D: Your problem seems to be culture shock. Sometimes when people move to a new location, especially a new country, they experience culture shock.Sometimes this culture shock can be serious, and people become very depressed. I suggest that you try to spend some time each week with people from your own culture.S: But my teachers tell me to speak English all the time.D: I understand, but right now we need to deal with your symptoms. Follow my advice, and you’ll feel better.S: How long does this last?D: Culture shock lasts for a while and then begins to disappear. The length of time varies from person to person. If you aren’t feelin g better in two or three weeks, please call me again.1.The student feels tired all the time, wants to sleep all day, and is notinterested in studying or being with people.2.Many things in the student’s life have changed, such as foods, customs, socializing, and even body language and gestures.3.Because the student’s heart, and blood pressure are all normal.4.Sometimes when people move to a new location, especially a new country, they experience culture shock.5.The doctor suggests that the student try to spend some time each week withpeople from her own culture.Task 3: The FluThere’s nothing gradual about the flu: it hits you like a hammer. One minute you’re feeling fine, and the next you can be shivering, burning up, and then shivering again. In minutes, your legs become weak and your body aches in places that have never hurt before. Influenza can break out so suddenly that people can sometimes say, “It hit me at exactly 9 last night.” But whether the flu strikes at night or on the bus to school, there’s just one thing a victim wants to do: lie down in bed. A healthy person can fight off the flu in three to five days, though a cough and tired feeling can last two more weeks. But often an attack of the flu is followed by another illness. Doctors recommend that old people, or people of any age with heart or lung problems, get a flu vaccineevery year. Because flu viruses change all the time, a new vaccine must be prepared each year to protect against future attacks.hit minute shivering legs ache lie lasts followed lung vaccine protectTask 4: An Announcementmake an appointment checkup cancellation 3 o’clock 3:30 Thursday.Ⅳ. Speaking OutModel 1: Everything will be OK Now Your Turn.James: Hello, Nicky! Are you feeling better today?Nicole: Well, the fever is gone, but I’m still feeling weak. You know, I can’t take it easy any longer. I’m worried about my classes and the co mingbiology exam—it’s an important test.James:Don’t worry. Everything will be OK. Are you still taking the medicine? Nicole:Yeah. I’m following the doctor’s orders, but I hate taking pills. You can’t be sure about the side effects.James: I know what you mean. Some medicines are not safe.Nicole: You could say that again.Model 2: Is it serious, doctor? Now Your Turn.Doctor:Well, John, your blood pressure is a bit high. Is there a history of that in your family?John:Is it serious, doctor? My grandpa died of a stroke.Doctor:Your condition is not that bad. But you have to take care. More rest, less work.John:Do I have to drop some classes? The trouble is that my class schedule is so tight this semester.Doctor: Take it easy. Take the prescription for three months, then come back for another checkup.Model 3: What’s on your mind? Now Your Turn.Katherine:What’s on your mind, Sarah?Sarah:I’m really anxious. I’m afraid of the oral presentation tomorrow. Katherine:There’s really no reason to be worried. You’ve practiced it so often with me that even I know it.Sarah:But I can’t help worrying. I’ll get nervous when I speak in public. Katherine: I know. When I did my first oral presentation, I went through the same thing. You’ll be fine.Ⅴ. Let’s TalkDoctor:Well, your test results are back, Jim. Your blood tests are fine.Everything seems OK.Jim:Huh. I still don’t have any energy, and I get headaches all the time.Doctor: Mm. I see your weight is 180 pounds. You’ve gained five pounds since your last visit. That’s a little too much for your weight.Jim:That’s funny. I’ve been eating the same as always.Doctor: I think maybe we should talk about dietJim:Oh, well, I mean…now I eat the things students usually eat at school. Doctor: The usual things?Jim:Yeah, you know. In the morning, I grab a few doughnuts and a coffee on the way to school.Doctor: Uh-huh. And for lunch?Jim:Uh, a couple of hot dogs, fries, and a Coke…maybe an ice cream on the way back.Doctor: And dinner?Jim:Pizza, and a Coke.Doctor: What about exercise?Jim:Exercise? I’m just not into exercise. I just like to watch sports on TV.Anyway I wouldn’t have time for exercise…too much homework, you know.Doctor: You should change your eating habits before you have a serious weight problem. I’ll give you this pamphlet with diet suggestions to follow, and I also want you to do some walking and some one-hour workoutsat the gym. Maybe three times a week.Jim:Diet? Exercise? But can’t I just take some pills to give me more energyFor ReferenceAA, you see B in low spirits and ask for the reason.Hi, Jack. What’s up? Furthering Listening and SpeakingListeningTask 1: Medical Services on CampusWhile every university in America has its own policies and creates its own rules, most provide some type of medical service or health insurance for students, especially large universities. If students have a cold, or other illnesses, they can see a doctor, and they may also seek medical advice on a range of issues. Free testing for STDs such as HIV is a major part of disease prevention—sharing important information about the epidemic. If students need a major operation or procedure, they must seek outside assistance, but the school may help them make the arrangements. Smaller universities and colleges are not likely to provide in-depth medical assistance; they usually deal with small problems in housing, and assist students to take care of major issues off campus. He described all his symptoms and was sure the doctor would give him a shot that would make him feel much better. Instead, the doctor told him to get plenty of rest and to drink lots of liquids. Free testing for STDs such as HIV is a major part of disease prevention prevention——sharing important information about the epidemic. If students need a major operation or procedure, they must seek outside assistance, but the school may help them make the arrangements. Smaller universities and colleges are not likely to provide in-depth medical assistance; they usually deal with small problems in housing, and assist students to take care of major issues off campus.
