Thinking Model: Collectivism VS Individualism

Plot: Mr. Yang do not want others know that he has an American grandson, so he brings Brooks to the barbershop and has his blond hair dyed black. However, Brooks screams to show his discontent, without concerning others’ feelings.

Superficial Cause: Mr. Yang dislikes the blond hair VS. Brooks does not want change his hair color.

Underlying Cause: Chinese care much about others’ opinion and tend to be as normal as anyone else. So, Mr. Yang dislikes Brooks’ hair color because it is so distinguishing. In contrast, American put their personal emotion and individual independence at first place, so when Brooks finds his hair color changed, he directly screams to express his discontent.

From this conflict we can find the difference between Chinese and American thinking model.

Chinese always put collectivity at first while Americans think highly of individuality.

Hero Cognition: Heroes in legends VS. Heroes in Comics

Plot: Brooks adores Spider-man, but Mr. Yang regard Spider-man as a goblin. In contrast, Brooks disinterests in Sun Wukong, the powerful hero in Mr. Yang’s eyes.

Superficial Cause:Brooks do not know Sun Wukong, while Mr. Yang does not know Spider-man.

Underlying Cause: The Chinese elder Chinese adore heroes in Chinese legends that have long history. American children know heroes through popular comics and movies

From Spiderman and Sun Wukong we can also deduce Chinese and American concepts of hero. Chinese legendary heroes are endowed with super powers and always be regarded as “immortals”, such Tuotatianwang, Yuhuangdadi. American comic heroes are still “men” in essence, but they are more intelligent and brave than common people, such as Superman and Batman.
