He began playing the glass harp at six.B. He often teaches glass harp lessons online.C. He is a great master of the Chinese language.D. He was inspired by his father to learn the glass harp.5.What does the author say about the glass harp?______A. Its inventor is Wolfgang Mozart.B. It is made up of glasses of the same size.C. It appears to be gaining in popularity today.D. Its sounds are affected by the water in the glasses.6.Why does Turner prefer to use cheap glass?______A. To save money.B. To produce better sounds.C. To help recycle drinking glasses.D. To increase difficulty in performing.7.What would be the best title for the text?______A. Musician Pleases Crowds by Playing GlassesB. Playing the Glass Harp:a New TrendC. Jamey Turner' s Dream Coming TrueD. Wonderful Music Has No BordersCAbout l.5 billion people speak English around the world. But for more than l.1 billion of them,English is their second language-often with a noticeable accent."Someone's accent really reveals a lot about who they are and their identity. It will tell people what their native language is and probably where they come from,"says Marc Pell,a communications professor at McGill University in Montreal. And according to Pell, one reaction to it can be a bias(偏见)against that person.Previous research that has been done elsewhere showed that people who have an accent tend to be trusted less, simply because they have an accent. But accents aren't the only thing we listen for when we have to decide if we trust another person.Tone of voice also plays a role.Pell and his team wanted to know if people would trust a confident tone, even if it came fromsomeone with an accent. The researchers had Canadian English speakers listen to different versions of people saying neutral(无明显特性的)statements like "she has access to the building" while they were getting a brain scan in an MRI(磁共振成像)machine.Subjects heard someone say it with a confident tone with a Canadian English accent,an Australian accent or a French accent.Participants also heard the sentence with the three accents spoken in a doubtful or neutral tone. The MRI scans showed that the participants had to use more brain power to decide if they could trust the statements said with the non-native accents. When the study participants heard the Australian or French accents, blood flow increased to the part of the brain that we use to process sound. They seemed to have to analyze that perhaps more carefully,or for a longer period of time to make this decision about whether they truly believed the speaker, especially when the speaker sounded doubtful. When asked, the participants reported not trusting either Australian or French accents-except when the statements were said confidently. It seems that confidence speaks for itself.8.What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 2 refer to?______A. A person' s accent.B. A person' s identity.C. A person' s hometown.D. A person' s native language.9.What did Pell's team want to know?______A. Why some people trust others less.B. Which parts of the brain deal with sound.C. What can cause a bias against non-natives.D. Whether a non-native' s confident tone can gain trust.10.For the study participants, which of the following might demand the most brain power?______A. A Canadian speaking English in a friendly way.B. A French person speaking English neutrally.C. An American speaking English confidently.D. An Australian speaking English doubtfully.11.Where does this text most probably come from?______A. A research plan.B. A health magazine.C. An academic journal.D. A language-learning guide.DIf you buy a washing machine,a fridge or a television in Europe,it comes with a sticker. Thanks to a 1992 EU rule, all appliances must be labelled (贴标签)with their energy efficiency. So why has our food system-which threatens 10,000 species with extinction, produces about 30% of greenhouse gases, and drives 800/o of our air pollution-only ever had voluntary eco-labels?The appliances ruling had a huge impact;initially,75% of fridges and freezers were rated G to D(low efficiency),but today 98% are classed A++ or A+++.Worldwide, the energy efficiency of labelled appliances has increased three times faster than appliances without labels.Introducing an equal system for food could have an even bigger impact.Mandatory environmental labels would change how we produce and consume in far-reaching ways.First, producers would have to measure their impacts in a uniform way and be accountable for the results. This would not be expensive:it is free to monitor environmental impacts using digital tools such as Fieldprint and the Cool Farm Tool.Second, they support sustainable consumption. Our research found that products that look, taste and cost the same can have dramatically different environmenta] impacts.High-impact beef producers use 5,7000% more land and create 1,000% more greenhouse gases than low-impact producers.Labels would allow consumers to tell these products apart. They would highlight both high-and low-impact producers,in the same way, across multiple products. This would encourage more people to think about their choices by exposing them to the facts every time they are in the shops. We can also use labels to turn smaller consumer changes into large environmental benefits:because a small number of producers create a large share of the impact, simply avoiding high-impact producers can make a huge contribution to pollution reductions.12.Why does the author mention the appliances in Paragraph 1 ?______A. To applaud the 1992 EU rule.B. To bring up the topic of labelling food.C. To point out the pollution they caused.D. To compare their energy consumption rates.13.What do the figures in Paragraph 2 show?______A. The importance of saving energy.B. The debate about eco-labelled appliances.C. The effectiveness of the appliances ruling.D. The problem caused by appliances of low efficiency.14.What does the word "Mandatory" in Paragraph 3 mean?______A. Compulsory.B. Effective.C. Different.D. Independent.15.What can be learned about eco-labels?______A. They will increase the profits of low-impact producers.B. They can show producers' environmental impacts.C. They will guide consumers to buy healthier food.D. They can expose consumers to more products.二、阅读七选五(本大题共5小题,共10.0分)Approximately l,250 km long, the Red Sea coast of Egypt is surely one of the best places in the world to go underwater diving.(1) ?Its hot sunny climate and clear warm water make it the ideal place for beginners as well as for experienced divers,at any time of the year. With over fifty diving centres in the area, many different types of diving are possible. At centres for complete beginners, there are many training courses designed for them.(2) .These dives get the rookie(新手)divers used to being underwater and teach some basic skills such as swimming and breathing below the surface.More experienced divers can choose from a vast range of possible activities. Many of these can be enjoyed either as part of a group or,if they prefer, alone. Some like to explore the coast of the National Park, where the steep cliffs(悬崖)extend underwater to a depth of more than seventy metres.(3) ,for dives of this kind, divers are advised to be accompanied by a guide. An experienced guide can help the divers escape the danger before it approaches. For really advanced divers, there are some fascinating wrecks(失事船只)at the bottom of the Red Sea.(4) ,it is well worth going just to see the huge variety of beautiful plants and fish down there. However, divers do need to be aware that one kick in the wrong direction can cause a"storm" of fine dark silt(淤泥)which can be virtually blinding.(5) .However, divers are forbidden to touch anything or attempt to move any artworks.A.If you are a more experienced diverB.How well does it live up to its reputationC.Where is exactly this truly wonderful diving placeD.As the strong currents can suddenly change directionE.They all include simple dives with a qualified instructorF.Although visits to these old ships require quite long boat tripsG.Also, some of the sites have artworks lying in the ships or on the sandy bottom16. What might the article go on describing after the last paragraph?A. The researching process of the study.B. The disadvantages of organic foodC. The current consumption of organic food.D. The bright future of organic food."IF ALIENS are so likely, why have we never seen any?" That is the Fermi Paradox(悻论)﹣named after Enrico Fermi,a physicist who posed it in 1950.Fermi's argument ran as follows. The laws of nature supported the appearance of intelligent life on Earth. Those laws are the same throughout the universe. The universe contains zillions of stars and planets. So,even if life is unlikely to arise on any particular astronomical body, the sheer abundance of creation suggests the night sky should be full of alien civilizations.Fermi wondered why aliens had never visited the earth.Today, the paradox is more usually cast in light of the inability of radio﹣telescope searches to detect the equivalent(相等的)of the radio waves that leak from Earth into the universe, and have done for the past century.Thinking up answers to this apparent contradiction has become something of a scientific parlour(客厅)game.Perhaps life is really very unlikely.Perhaps the priests are right:human beings were put on Earth by some creator God for His own unknown purposes, and the rest of the universe is merely background scenery.Perhaps there are plenty of aliens, but they have decided that discretion is a safer bet than gathering together.Or perhaps galactic(银河的)society avoids communicating with Earth specifically. One frightening idea is that .technological civilizations destroy themselves before they can make their presence known. They might blow themselves up after inventing nuclear weapons (an invention that,on Earth,Fermi had been part of),or cook themselves to death by over﹣burning fossil fuels. In a paper published last month on arXiv,an online repository(文献库),a group of three astronomers at Pennsylvania State University have analyzed the history of alien hunting and come to a different conclusion. In effect, they reject one of the paradox' s main theory.Astronomers have seen no sign of aliens, argue Jason Wright and his colleagues, because they have not been looking hard enough.12. What is the Fermi Paradox?A. The law of universe supported the appearance of aliens but we never see any.B A theory about whether aliens exist on the earth and why we can't see them.C. Fermi thought that aliens never existed because it was completely a paradox.D. Fermi concluded that aliens did exist but they could not be seen by humans.13. What can we conclude from the second paragraph?A. The universe doesn't provide the abundance of creation of life.B. Fermi thought aliens never visited the earth in the history of human.C. The inability of radio﹣telescope may result in the failure of finding aliens.D. The civilizations on the earth have been detected by aliens in the universe.14. What does the word underlined in the third paragraph mean?A. Getting together.B. Fighting each other.C. Hating each other.D. Living separately.15. How do Jason Wright and his colleagues find the Fermi Paradox?A. They firmly believe that it is out of date.B. They actually doubt the base of the paradox.C. Planners, politicians and media keep showing off their benefits: reducing pollution, congestion, travel costs and oil dependence, while improving public health. Bike sharing also helps make cities appear modern, dynamic and world-wide-----qualities much sought after by the creative class. But what makes for a successful public bike-sharing program? This is an important question because installing one requires significant public and private investment and adjustment to the built environment. While many programs have been launched among much praise, often their popularity has soon declined. Many end up operating at a financial loss and depend on other profitable enterprises to cross-subsidize (交叉补贴) them. Some have resulted in thrown-away bikes becoming an eyesore.Understanding which factors enhance or stop public bike sharing is critical in helping cities decide whether such a program is workable, before considering what design and sitting will work best.Drawing on current knowledge, we discuss the importance of the local landscape, climate, cycling infrastructure (基础设施) and land use. We also touch on other factors, such as the legal environment and the characteristics of the bike-sharing program itself.Take natural environment for example. Two natural environment factors are known to affect participation: hilliness and weather. Hilliness discourages balanced bike-sharing use, as users avoid returning bicycles to stations on hilltops. Those stations end up being empty, while stations on flat areas are often full, so users cannot find a station to return their bikes. As for weather, ideal temperature ranges vary by the climate zone. Case studies show warmand dry weather encourages public bike-sharing use. Rain and strong wind reduce the frequency of trips. However, some approaches, such as providing sheltered, shaded, or even heated or cooled cycling infrastructure, could prove useful.24.What can we infer about bike sharing from Paragraph 1?A.It has no disadvantage.B.It is welcomed worldwide.C.It can solve every problem.D.It is the symbol of modern cities.25.What is the current situation of bike-sharing programs?A.Many of them run at a loss.B.Most of them make huge profits.C.They are the most promising business.D.Their development is determined by public investment.26.Why does the author mention the natural environment?A.To show user’s interest in various natural environment.B.To show the decisive function of natural environment.C.To show the necessity of bike-sharing programs.D.To show the significance of some factors.27.Which of the following might increase bike-sharing use?A.Hilliness.B.Attractive bikes.C.Rain and strong windD.Perfect cycling infrastructure.CWater is precious especially in dry areas. A new device can produce drinkable water from desert air using nothing but sunlight.“With this device, you can harvest a Coke can’s worth of water in an hour,” says co-creator Omar Yaghi, a chemist at the University of California. “That’s about how much water a person needs to survive in the desert.”The current device is just a sample. But the technology could be used to supply fresh water to some remote regions of the globe, like the Middle East and North Africa, Yaghi says.“Previous attempts at low-energy water collection functioned below 50 percent relative humidity, while the new device pulled water from air with as low as 20 percent humidity,” Yaghi said.Getting that water out is easy when the air is wet. But drawing water from the drier air in parched areas is a greater challenge. Spongy (柔软吸水的) materials can take water out from the dry air. Those materials, however, either collect water too slowly or require lots of energy to gather the water. The new device uses a material that avoids both problems. MIT mechanical engineer Evelyn Wang, and her colleagues remade an existing material composed of electrically charged metal atoms. This metal-organic framework MOF-801, creates a network of sponge like pores (气孔) to trap water vapor. At room temperature, water vapor is collected in the pores. As temperatures rise, the water escapes into a box beneath the pores. A condenser (冷凝器) in the box cools the vapor, converting it into a drinkable liquid. This entire process takes around two hours.Laboratory tests of the device harvested 2. 8 liters of water per day. The device could be used as a personal water source in dry regions, Yaghi says, or scaled up (按比例增加) to produce enough water for a whole community.28.How does MOF-801 work?A. By taking water out in wet areas.B. By collecting and cooling water vapor.C. By using spongy materials to store water.D. By creating metal pores and using a condenser.29.What does the underlined word “parched” in Paragraph 5 mean?A. Dry.B. Cool.C. Deserted.D. Exposed.30.Which of the following is an advantage of MOF-801?A. The small size.B. The low price.C. Making water fresher.D. Saving time and energy.31.What can be inferred from the text?A. Evelyn Wang created MOF-801 on her own.B. People are curious about the creation of MOF-801.C. MOF-801 isn’t available for customers now.D. The problem of water shortage will be solved by MOF-801.DScientists have found living organisms (有机体) that could be 50,000 years old. The organisms were found in ahot, but beautiful cave system in Naica, Mexico. These ancient life forms can be seen only with a microscope. The ancient microbes (微生物) were able to exist by eating minerals such as iron and manganese, said Penelope Boston, head of NASA’s Astrobiology Institute. If the findings are confirmed, they will show how microbes can survive in extreme conditions.Researchers have been studying the microbes for nine years. Forty different kinds of microbes and some viruses were found in the underground area. The genetic structures of these organisms are different from those of their nearest relatives. That means their closest relative is about as genetically different as humans are from mushrooms growing in the forest. The caves in Naica are 800 kilometers deep. Before the miners began working in the caves, the area was isolated from the surface and the outside world. Some of the caves are as big as the large religious centers built during Europe’s Middle Ages. There are crystals (结晶体) covering the walls. Scientists must wear special clothing to keep cool. The clothing keeps the crystals safe from human germs or other damage. The researchers could only work for about 20 minutes at a time before they had to go to a room that was 38 degrees Celsius to cool down.NASA officials would not let Boston share her findings with scientific experts before last week’s announcement. So scientists could not say much about the findings. But Norine Noonan, a biologist with the University of South Florida, said she believed them. “Why are we surprised?” Noonan said. “As a biologist, I would say life on Earth is extremely tough and extremely adaptable.” The microbes are not the oldest life forms on Earth. Several years ago, scientists published studies about microbes that may be 500,000 years old and still alive.32. What do the ancient microbes survive on?A. Minerals.B. Germs.C. Viruses.D. Crystals.33. Why are mushrooms mentioned in Paragraph 3?A. To show the caves are extremely hot.B. To tell us the microbes are a kind of mushroom.C. To explain how the structures of the microbes are unusual.D. To say the microbes are as useful to humans as mushrooms.34. What can we learn from the last paragraph about the microbes?A. They are the same microbes found several years ago.B. They live longer than scientists predicted.C. They didn’t surprise Norine Noonan at all.D. They are the oldest life forms on Earth.35. What does the text mainly tell us?A. A complex cave system was discovered in Naica.B. 50,000-year-old “super life” was found in Mexico.C. Researchers never stop studying living organisms.D. Some life forms can live in extreme conditions.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
