只有掌握了其语言特点，才能更好的理解、应用和沟通。
下面就从航运英语的语言特点来分析航运英语的翻译方法和常见的错误。
2 航运英语的语言特点2．1 词汇特点航运专业英语词汇指的是在国际航运业务过程中经常使用到的专业英语词汇或术语。
有些词汇是航运英语的专业术语，有些就是普通英语词汇用在航运英语中但有着自己独特的专业含义。
2.1.1 专有词汇航运英语中的专有词汇是指仅仅使用在航运领域内的词，也就是专业术语。
例如表达船舶种类的词汇:dry cargo(freight) container干货集装箱、tug拖船、hovercraft 气垫船和 handy-sized bulker 小型散货船等；表示船舶结构的术语:hatch (hatch cover) 舱盖、main deck 主甲板和segregated ballast tank 分隔压载水舱等；表示航运业务相关的术语:cross docking 交叉配送、deviation 绕航、tally理货、chartering租船和stowage积载等；以及与航运单证有关的词组:charter party租船合约、dock receipt 场站收据、bill of lading提单和Letter of indemnity 担保书(函) 等。
2.1.2 老词新用航运专业英语常常将普通的英语词汇赋予新的特定含义，这让很多初学航运英语的人会产生困扰，因为按照原本的意思在这里根本解释不通。
比如，普通英语中“mark”、“hold”、“average”和“line”等词表示的是“标记”，“容纳”，“平均”和“线”的含义，而在航运专业英语中这些词汇的含义分别是“唛头”、“货舱”、“损失”和“航线”，要理解这些词汇必须具备专业知识。
2.1.3 缩略语为了简化语言和节约时间，航运英语中使用了大量的缩略语。
在不改变词语意义的基础上，通过把原来较长较复杂的词或短语直接或间接地缩减成较短较简单的组合词语，用这种方法创造出来的词语就称之为缩略词语。
缩略词的书写简练方便，大大节省了书信写作时间，从而提高了航运业务人员的工作效率。
但是缩略语在使用时有其特定的规律和严格的形式，不能通过自己的理解随意创造，这样就可以在很大程度上减少理解上的歧义和误差。
根据其构成方式，航运英语缩略词语大致可分为以下四类：(1)首字母缩略词法:由两个或两个以上的单词所组成的某些短语和专有名词词组，各取其第一个字母。
例如:LOA——length over all(船身总长)VHF——very high frequency (甚高频)(2)半缩略词法:一般是缩略单词的开头部分，或者结尾部分，也可能是词的两端。
例如:VOY——voyage (航次)CERTIFICATE No. —— certificate number (证书编号)(3)音似法:按照相同的发音，用一个字母或者几个字母组成来代替一个单词或句子。
例如:V——we(我们)U——you (你；你们)WZ——with (和)BCOZ——because (因为)(4)简化后缀法:将后缀词根缩减为一个或两个字母的方法。
例如:G ——ing(词汇对应:FLWG——following)T；MT——ment (词汇对应:GOVT——government；DCMT——document) 2．2 句法特点（1）在航运英语句法中，一般多使用被动语态，定语从句多。
被动语态的使用可以使句子更客观，因为航运英语中遇到的大多数是船舶设备机器和货物，需要客观的描述。
而定语从句的使用，通过限制、修饰使句子更加客观严谨。
另外在国际海员作业中有规定的专用句型结构等表达方式。
例如：“The stowage plan serves as an evidence of the cargo carried by the ship ,and it is customary for the ship to carry with a suitable number of copies thereof to serve as an essential document to be submitted to the customs at the port or ports of discharge when the ship reaches there, when any cargo not shown in the manifest is found to have been loaded on the ship or discharged therefrom such cargo will considered as contraband and the carrier will often be subject to aheavy fine.”“船舶积载图作为船舶所运载的货物证据，也应当随船携带适当数量的记载图复印件，按照惯例，当船舶到达装运港或卸货港时，积载图其作为一个重要的文件，提交给海关查验，如果清单中未显示的货物，发现已装上船舶或卸载这些货物将被视为走私，承运人将会受到严重的处罚。
”这个例句很长，是一个复合句，多次使用了定语、被动的表达方式。
像the cargo carried by the ship，随船携带的货物；any cargo not shown in the manifest，记载图上没有列明的货物；to be submitted to the customs被递交给海关。
都是来修饰前一个事物。
用一个这样的复合句就能够清楚地表达了积载图的作用，积载图应该随船携带，并且应该有备分的，因为到达每一次港口，海关都要检查积载图来发现是否有走私货物。
如果用每句话来表达每个意思的话，就会使想要表达的意思分成段落，理解意思的时候就会显得啰嗦。
（2）在航运英语中，SHALL 与 MAY的使用频率极高。
在法律规章或契约中,一般规定当事人的法律义务时,通常使用SHALL,因为SHALL的语气十分强硬。
例如：“承运人应该在开航之前和开航时，尽职尽责使船舶适航。
”“The carrier shall,before and at the beginning of the voyage,exercise due diligence to make the ship seaworthy.”“货物由承运人接收或者装船后,应托运人的要求,承运人应当签发提单”“When the goods have been taken over by the carrier or have been loaded on board, the carrier shall,on demand of the shipper,issue to the shipper a bill of loading.”在这两个例句中，用到了shall ，在这里是可以用shall的，因为它是规定了承运人的法律义务，用shall就比较正式而不能用may。
但是在规定承运人的义务时就一般多使用MAY。
据说在制定规则是，因在规定承运人的义务时使用了SHALL，因此造成了许多第三世界国家代表的不满。
SHALL在我国航运法规文献中滥用的现象也是屡见不鲜。
例：“承运人可能因为没有付运费、空舱费、滞期费和其他任何货方应付的款项,无论何种人应付的共同海损分摊费用以及收回此项费用的开支而对货物以及任何单证行使留置权,并有权出售或处置货物。
如果出售货物所得不足抵偿应收款额和引起的费用,承运人有权向货方收回其欠款。
”中远提单将其译为: “The Carrier shall have a lien on the goods and any document relating thereto for freight,dead freight,demurrage and any other amount payable by the Merchant,and for general average contributions for whomever due and for the cost of recovering the same,and for this purpose shall have the right to sell or otherwise dispose of the goods.If on sale of the goods,the proceeds fail to cover the amount due and expenses incurred,the Carrier shall be entitled to recover the deficit from the Merchant.”按照这段英文的真正意思,第1个SHALL意为:如果货方不支付货运或其他有关费用,承运人就一定要行使留置权，不行使留置权不行；第2个SHALL表示:承运人一定要有权利来出售或处置货物，不出售也不行；第3个SHALL可理解为:承运人一定要有权向货方收回其欠款(没有权不行)。
