1 While everybody enjoys fresh cut flowers around their house, few people know how to keep them for as long as possible. This may be done by keeping in mind a few simple facts.2 An important thing to remember about cut flowers is that they are sensitive to temperature. For example, studies have shown that cut carnations (康乃馨) retain their freshness eight times longer when kept at 12~C than when kept at 26~C. Keeping freshly harvested flowers at the right temperatures is probably the most important aspect of flower care.3 Flowers are not intended by nature to live very long. Their biological purpose is simply to attract birds or insects, such as bees, for pollination (授粉). After that, they quickly dry up and die. The process by which flowers consume oxygen and produce carbon dioxide (二氧化碳), called respiration (呼吸), generates the energy the flower needs to give the flower its shape and colour. The making of seeds also depends on this energy. While all living things respire, flowers have a high level of respiration. A result of all this respiration is heat, and for flowers the level of heat relative to the mass of the flower is very high. Respiration also brings about the eventual death of the flower. Thus the greater the level of respiration, the sooner the flower dies.4 How, then, to control the rate at which flowers die? Bycontrolling respiration How is respiration controlled? By controlling temperature We know that respiration produce heat, but the reverse is also true. Thus by maintaining low temperatures, respiration is reduced and the cut flower will age more slowly.5 Another vital factor in keeping cut flowers is the quality of the water in which they are placed. Flowers find it difficult to "drink" water that is dirty or otherwise polluted. Even when water looks and smells clean, it almost certainly contains harmful substances that can endanger the flowers To rid the water of these unwanted substances, household chlorine bleach (含氯漂白剂) can be used in small quantities. It is recommended that 15 drops of chlorine bleach (at 4% solution) be added to each litre of water. The water and solution should also be replaced each day.1 Paragraph 22 Paragraph 33 Paragraph 44 Paragraph 5A Control of RespirationB Beauty of Fresh Cut FlowersC Role of RespirationD Most Important Aspect of Flower CareE Need for Clean WaterF Ways of Stopping Respiration5 A few simple facts will help you keep cut flowers6 Respiration plays a key role7 The aging of cut flowers can be slowed down8 Another important way to prolong the life of cut flowers isA by keeping its original shape and colourB in the life of cut flowersC to produce carbon dioxideD for as long as possibleE by controlling temperatureF to replace the water and solution every day参考答案:DCAED BEF更多职称英语考试免费资料请访问“新东方在线职称英语频道”。

Tunguska Event1 A hundred years ago this week, a gigantic explosion ripped (撕裂) open the day y above a forest in western Siberia, leaving a scientific riddle that endures to this day.2 A dazzling light pierced the heavens, followed by a shock wave as strong as 1,000 atomic bombs. The explosion flattened 80 million trees across an area of 2,000 square kilometers. The fireball was so great that, a day later, Londoners could read their newspapers under the night sky. What caused the so-called Tunguska Event, named after the nearby Podkamennaya Tunguska river, still remains a mystery.3 Experts suspect it was a rock that, after traveling in space for millions of years, was destined to crash to Earthat exactly 7:17 a.m. on June 30, 1908. This possibility worries scienti sts.“Imagine an unspotted asteroid (小行星) hitting a significant chunk(块) of land ... and imagine if that area, unlike Tunguska, were populated,” the British science journal Nature commented recently.4 But no fragments of the “rock” have ever been found. Finding such evidence would be important, for it would increase our knowledge about the risk posed by dangerous NearEarth Objects (NEOs), say Italian researchers Luca Gasperini, Enrico Bonatti and Giuseppe Longo. Feed the World with Potatoes1. As food prices continue to rise rapidly, there is growing concern about the effect it will have among the world’s poor.2. Increasingly, experts are looking to thepotato as a possible low-cost solution to feeding the hungry. To emphasize the issue, the United Nations has called the potato “a hidden treasure” and named 2008 the International Yearof the Potato. Here’s how potatoes could end the food crisis.3. The potato matures more quickly, on less land and in harsher climate than most other major crops. Up to 85 percent of the plant is eatable, compared with around 50 percent of cereals. Its broad adaptability to a wide variety of farming systems is also note worthy.4. Potatoes are an excellent source of complex carbohydrates, which is release their energy slowly, and have only 5 percent of wheat’ s fat content. They contain only a quarter of the calories of bread and, according to the Potato Center, when boiled, potatoes have more protein and nearly twice the calcium as corn. Additionally, they are good source of vitamin C, iron, potassium(钾)and zinc(锌).5. The food and Agriculture Organization recently surveyed food price inflation in over 70 of the poor countries. Cereal price inflation was much higher and far more widespread than for potatoes. A significant factor behind the potato’ s affordability is the fact that unlike other agriculture products, the potato is not yet a global commodity, and has therefore not attracted speculative investors. Raw potatoes are heavy and carrot during transmit, so global trade has been show to take off. Also, potatoes are susceptible(易受影响的) to infection with disease, hindering(防碍) export. According to analysts’ estimates, less than 5 percent of potatoes are traded internationally, with prices driven primarily by local tastes instead of international demand.23. Paragraph 2__B___24. Teaching Is “One of the Least Popular Jobs in the UK”1) The UK government has just published a report on the future of secondary-school teaching (pupils aged 11~16), and the conclusion of the report is that many secondary schools now face great difficulties in finding people who want to be teachers. Since the 1980s, the number of graduates who say they would “seriously consider” teaching as a career has fallen sharply, from 64% in 1982 to just 17% today. Thereport suggests that urgent action needs to be taken in order to encourage more intelligent young graduates into teaching.2) The main drawback of secondary teaching, according to the report, is the low salary. Earnings in teaching are much lower than in many other jobs, and this means that fewer and fewer young people decide to be teachers. Joanne Manners, 24 is a good example. “ I graduated in maths last year, and I was thinking of doing a teacher training course to become a maths teacher—but when I looked into the details, it became clear that teaching isn’t a very lucrative(赚钱的)job these days. I saw I could earn twice as much if I worked in marketing or advertising, and so I decided not to become a teacher.”3) It’s not just about the money, however. The survey concluded that another reason why people don’t want to be teachers is that some teenagers behave very badly in school.A lot of schools have problems with discipline, and it seems clear that children do not have the same respect for teachersas in the past. Here’s the view of Dave Hallam, anaccountant from London:” I think parents are to bla me. They should have stricter rules with their children at home andalso teach their children to have more respect for teachers.”4) “ It makes me feel so proud.” Says Brian Jones, who works in a secondary school in London. So what does he thinkthe government should do to encourage more people to become teachers?” “My view is that the government should reducethe burden of work on teachers. I find that I always have too much work to do.”5) The report is clear that the problem of teachershortage is a very serious one. It says that the government should raise teachers’ pay significantly, to catch up with workers in other professions. It also suggests that the government could launch a nationwide publicity campaign, with some advertisements on TV and in the newspapers, to show the positive sides of teaching to young people. Another solution could be set a maximum number of hours per week that teachers can work, in order to reduce stress on teachers. “Hopefully,” the report concludes, “these solutions can improve the poor image of secondary teaching, and increase the number of young people who want to become teachers in the future.【题干】23. 2020职称英语综合类概括大意:Successful Language Learners

SuccessfulLanguage LearnersSuccessful Language LearnersSome people seem to have a knack for learning languages. They can pick up new vocabulary, master rules or grammar, and learn to write in the new language more quickly than others. They do not seem to be any more intelligent than others,so what makes language learning so much easier for them? Perhaps if we take a close look at these successful language learners,we may discover a few of the techniques which make language learning easier for them.First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on the book or the teacher;they discover their own way to learn the language.Instead of waiting for the teacher to explain, they try to find the patterns and the rules for themselves. They are good guessers who look for clues and form their own conclusions. When they guess wrong, they guess again. They try to learn from mistakes.Successful language learning is activelearning. Therefore, successful learners do not wait for a chance to use the language;they look for such a chance. They find people who speak the language and they ask these people to correct them when they make a mistake. They will try anything to communicate. They are not afraid to repeat what they hear or to say strange things;they are willing to make mistakes and try again. When communication is difficult, they can accept information that is inexact or incomplete. It ismore important for them to learn to think in the language than to know the meaning of every word. Finally, successful language learners are learners with a purpose. They want to learn the language because they are interested in the language and the people who speak it.It is necessary for them to learn the language in order to communicate with these people and to learn from them.Theyfind it easy to practice using the language regularly because they want to learn with it.What kind of language learner are you?If you are a successful language learner, you have probably been learning independently, actively, and purposefully. On the other hand,if your language learning has been less than successful, you might as well try some of the techniques outlined above.1.Paragraph 1__________2.Paragraph 2__________3.Paragraph 3__________4.Paragraph 4__________A.Ways to Learn a Language SuccessfullyB.Learning a language PurposefullyC.Learning a Language ActivelyD.Learning a Language IndependentlyE.Learning from MistakesF.Learning to Think in the Target Language5.Successful language learners deriveconclusions__________.6.Independent Language learners rely onthemselves________.7.Active language learners seize everyopportunity_________.8.The author wrote this text___________.A.to discover sentence patterns and grammatical rulesB.to expand vocabularyC.to use the target languageD.to encourage unsuccessful language learners to learn independently, actively and purposefullyE.from cluesF.to say strange things参考答案:ADCBEACD。

(7)Screen Test1.Every year millions of women are screened with X-rays to pick up signs of breast cancer. If this happens early enough, the disease can often be treatedsuccessfully.According to a,survey published last year,21 countries have screening programmes.Nine of them, including Australia,Canada, the US and Spain, screen women under 50.2.But the medical benefits of screening these younger women are controversial, partly because the radiation brings a small risk of inducing cancer. Also, younger women must be given higher doses of X-rays because their breast tissue is denser.3.Researchers at the Polytechnic University1 of Valencia analysed the effect of screening more than 160,000 women at 11 local clinics. After estimating the women's cumulative dose of radiation, they used two models to calculate the number of extra cancers this would cause.4.The mathematical model recommended by Britain's National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB)predicted that the screening programme would cause 36 cancers per 100,000 women,18 of them fatal. The model preferred by the UN Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation led to a lower figure of 20 cancers.5.The researchers argue that the level of radiation-induced cancers is "not very significant" compared to the far larger number of cancers that are discovered and treated. The Valencia programme, they say, detects between 300 and 450 cases of breast cancer in every 100,000 women screened.6.But they point out that the risk of women contracting cancer from radiation could be reduced by between 40 and 80 percent if screening began at 50 instead of 45,because they would be exposed to less radiation. The results of their study, they suggest, could help "optimise the technique" for breast cancer screening.7."There is a trade-off between the diagnostic benefits of breast screening and its risks," admits Michael Clark of the NRPB.But he warns that the study should be interpreted with caution."On the basis of the current data, for every 10 cancers successfully detected and prevented there is a risk of causing one later in life. That's why radiation exposure should be minimised in any screening programme." 1.Paragraph 2 ________________2.Paragraph 3 ________________3.Paragraph 4 ________________4.Paragraph 5 ________________A Harm Screening May Do to a Younger WomanB Investigating the Effect of ScreeningC Effects Predicted by Two Different ModelsD Small Risk of Inducing Cancers from RadiationE Treatment of CancersF Factors That Trigger Cancers5.Early discovery of breast cancer may________________.6.Advantages of screening women under 50are________________.7.Delaying the age at which screening startsmay________________.8.Radiation exposure should be ________________.A be costlyB harmfulC save a lifeD still open to debateE reduce the risk of radiation triggering a cancerF reduced to the minimum答案与题解:1.A A说的是:用X射线检查可能对年轻女人不好。

1 You depend on all the people closely around to give you the warm feeling of belongingness (归属) that you must have to feel secure. But, in fact, the members of all the groups to which you belong also depend on you to give that feeling to them. A person who shows that he wants everything for himself is bound (一定的) to be a lonely wolf.2 The need for companionship is closely related to the need for a sense of belongingness. How sad and lonely your life would be if you had no one to share your feelings and experiences. You may take it for granted that there always will be people around to talk to and to do things with you and for you. The important point, however, is that keeping emotionally healthy does not depend so much upon having people around you as upon your ability to establish relationships that are satisfying both to you and to them.3 Suppose you are in a crowd watching a football game. You don't know them. When the game is over, you will all go your separate ways. But just for a while you had a feeling of companionship, of sharing the feelings of others who were cheering for the team you wanted to win.4 An experience of this kind gives the clue (线索) to what companionship really is. It depends upon emotional ties of sympathy, understanding, trust, and affection. Companions become friends when these ties are formed.5 When you are thrown in a new circle of acquaintances (熟人), you may not know with whom you will make friends,but-you can be sure that you will be able to establish friendships if you show that you really like people.1 Paragraph 2_________2 Paragraph 3_________.3 Paragraph 4_________ .4 Paragraph 5_________.A Making friends with new acquaintancesB Close link between companionship and belongingnessC How to satisfy other people's needsD An example of a satisfying relationshipE Difficulties in establishing friendshipsF What companionship really is5 If you had no one to share your feelings, your life would be_________.6 The warm feeling of belongingness may give you_________.7 The ability to establish fine relations with otherswill keep you_________ .8 You will find it hard to make friends withpeople_________.A without pityB sad and lonelyC emotionally healthyD without real love for themE a sense of securityF a lonely wolf[参考答案]1. 2020职称英语综合类概括大意题目特点及考情分析

(1)Aspirin ― a New Miracle Drug1. Using aspirin, an over-the-counter pill on sale1 in every supermarket without a prescription, to treat serious circulatory disease may seem almost like quackery. But today doctors recognize this drug as a potent compound as important as antibiotics, digitalis and other miracle drugs.2. In its natural form as willow bark and leaves, this remarkable remedy dates back to Hippocrates2. In 1829 the chemical in the willow tree that can relieve pain and reduce fever was discovered to be salicin. By 1899 the Bayer Company in Germany had marketed a variant, acetylsalicylic acid,3 under the name of aspirin.3. Since then, aspirin and confounds containing aspirin have been taken by tens of millions of arthritis patients. As a pain killer aspirin is, according to one study, more effective than all other analgesics and narcotics available for oral use. It also acts on4 the body 's thermostat, turning down fever.4. But some of its powers remained unsuspected until recently. In 1950 the late Dr. Craven wrote to a small western medical journal about 400 overweight, sedentary male patients to whom he had given one or two aspirin tablets a day. None had had a heart attack. He enlarged his group to 8,000 and in 1956 reported :”Not a single case of detectable coronary or cerebral thrombosis5 ” and “no major stroke had occurred in patients who had taken one or two tabletsdaily for from one to ten years. But his observations were largely ignored.5. Then Dr. Vane proved that aspirin turned off the body's prostaglandin s6 hormonelike chemicals that can be secreted by every cell. Some potent prostaglandins are harmful compounds that create fever, pain and arthritis. One of them stimulates platelets in the blood to begin forming clots inside arteries. Aspirin blocks this dangerous effect.6. Vane 's finding caused some researchers to recall Craven's 1956 observations, which now had a possible scientific explanation. Numerous studies were begun to find out whether aspirin could indeed inhibit heart attacks and stroke.7. In 1972, ten US medical institutions began two “double - blind ” trials7 of 303 patients who suffered from transient ischemic attacks (TIAs)8. Four aspirin tablets a day were given to 153 patients, while placebo tablets were given to 150. Neither patients nor doctors knew which was which. After six months, the patients on aspirin had experienced much fewer TIAs, and fewer strokes and deaths from strokes than the “controls ” . The results were so conclusive that aspirin has been used for this purpose widely. 1. an over-the-counter pill on sale:摆在柜台上(不需处方)出售的药丸pill :药丸,丸剂on sale :(商店的货物等供)出售的2. this remarkable remedy dates back to Hippocrates :这种疗效显着的治疗剂能够回溯到希波克拉底时代date back to :追溯,回溯至Hippocrates :希波克拉底(公元前460 ?
Voice Your Opinion:Change Is Needed in Youth Sports
Everywhere you look, you see kids bouncing a basketball or waving a tennis racquet (网球拍).And these kids are getting younger and younger. In some countries, children can compete on basketball, baseball, and volleyball teams starting at age nine.(46) And swimming and gymnastics classes begin at age
four,to prepare children for competition.
It's true that a few of these kids will develop into highly skilled athletes and may even become members of the national Olympic teams.(47) This emphasis on competition in sports is having serious negative effects.
Children who get involved in competitive sports at a young age often grow tired of their sport. Many parents pressure their kids to choose one sport and devote all their time to it.(48) But 66 percent of the young athletes wanted to play more than one sport-for fun.
Another problem is the pressure imposed by over-competitive parents and coaches.Children are not naturally competitive. In fact,a recent study by Paulo David found that most children don't even understand the idea of competition until they are seven years old.(49)The third, and
biggest, problem for young athletes is the lack of time to do their homework, have fun,be with friends—in short, time to be kids. When they are forced to spend every afternoon at sports practice, they often start to hate their chosen sport.A searchers found that 70 percent of kids who take part in
competitive sports before the of twelve quit before they turn eighteen.(50) Excessive competitive away all the enjoyment.
Need to remember the purpose of youth sports – to give kids a chance to have developing strong, healthy bodies.
A.But what about the others, the average kids?
B.The youth soccer organization has teams for children as young as five.
C.A survey found that 79 percent of parents of young athletes wanted their children concentrate on one sport.
D.Very young kids don't know why their parents are pushing them so hard.
E.Sports for children have two important purposes.
F.Many of them completely lose interest in sports.

本句前…kids are getting younger and younger. In some countries, children can compete…start-ing at age nine,而后面…swimming and gymnastics classes begin at age four,这些都在说低龄儿童参与体育项目。

It's true that a few of these kids will develop into highly skilled athletes and may even become members of the national Olympic teams的a few指出了少部分孩子运动竞技成绩好,此处笔锋一转,转向绝大部分其他孩子。

Many parents pressure their kids to choose one sport and devote all their time to it,后面 But 66 percent of the young athletes wanted to play more than one sport for fun,说明父母和孩子对待体育活动的态度不同,父母希望孩子能专注一项
题选A.

本句前一句…most children don't even understand the idea
of competition until they are seven years old说明很多孩子直到

70 perce nt of kids…quit before they turn eighteens说明研究结果,而后面Excessive competitiveness took away all the enjoyment说明过度强调竞赛使人失去运动的乐趣,所
