As a teenager,I felt I was always letting people down. I was rebellious1 out-side,but I wanted to be liked inside.Once I left home to hitch-hike2to California with my friend Penelope. The trip wasn’t easy, and there were many times I didn’t feel safe. One situation in particular kept me grateful to still be alive. When I returned home,I was different, not so outwardly sure of myself.I was happy to be home. But then I noticed that Penelope, who was staying with us,was wearing my clothes. A nd my family seemed to like her better than me. I wondered if I would be missed if I weren’t there. I told my mom,and she explained that though Penelope was a lovely girl,no one could replace me.I pointed out,“She is more patient and is neater than I have ever been.” My mom said these were wonderful qualities, but I was the only person who could fill my role. She made me realize that even with my faults—and there were many-I was a loved member of the family who couldn’t be replaced.I became a searcher, wanting to find out who I was and what made me unique. My view of myself was changing. I wanted a solid base to start from. I started to resist3pressure to act in ways that I didn’t like any more, and I was delighted by who I really was. I came to feel much more sure that no one can ever take my place. Each of us holds a unique place in the world. You are special,no matter what others say or what you may think. So forget about being replaced. You can’t be.

I've known people to die from no love, but I've never known anyone to be loved to death. We just can't love one another enough. A heart-warming story tells of a woman who finally decided to ask her boss for a raise in salary. All day she felt nervous and apprehensive. Late in the afternoon she summoned the courage to approach her employer. To her delight, the boss agreed to a raise. The woman arrived home that evening to see a beautiful table set with their best dishes. Candles were softly glowing. Her husband had come home early and prepared a festive meal. She wondered if someone from the office had tipped him off, or... did he just somehow know that she would not get turned down? She found him in the kitchen and told him the good news. They embraced and kissed, then sat down to the wonderful meal. Next to her plate the woman found a beautifully lettered note. It read: "Congratulations, darling! I knew you'd get the raise! These things will tell you how much I love you. " Following the supper, her husband went into the kitchen to clean-up. She noticed that a second card had fallen from his pocket. Picking it up from the floor, she read: "Don't worry about not getting the raise! You deserve it anyway! These things will tell you how much I love you. " Someone has said that the measure of love is when you love without measure. What this man feels for his spouse is total acceptance and love, whether she succeeds or fails. His love celebrates her victories and soothes her wounds. He stands with her, no matter what life throws in their direction. He may say that he loves her to death, but he doesn't. He loves her to life, for his love nervous is her life, like nothing else can. Upon receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, Mother Teresa said: "What can you do to promote world peace? Go home and love your family. And love your friends. Love them without measure. Love them to life. I was puzzled! Why was this old woman making such a fuss about an old copse which was of no use to anybody? She had written letters to the local paper, even to a national, protesting about a projected by-pass to her village, and, looking at a map, the route was nowhere near where she lived and it wasn't as if the area was attractive. I was more than puzzled, I was intrigued. The enquiry into the route of the new by-pass to the village was due to take place shortly, and I wanted to know what it was that motivated her. So it was that I found myself knocking on a cottage door, being received by Mary Smith and then being taken for a walk to the woods. "I've always loved this place", she said, "it has a lot of memories for me, and for others. We all used it. They called it 'Lovers lane'. It's not much of a lane, and it doesn't go anywhere important, but that's why we all came here. To be away from people, to be by ourselves " she added. It was indeed pleasant that day and the songs of many birds could be heard. Squirrels gazed from the branches, quite bold in their movements, obviously few people passed this way and they had nothing to fear. I could imagine the noise of vehicles passing through these peaceful woods when the by-pass was built, so I felt that she probably had something there but as I hold strong opinions about the needs of the community over-riding the opinions of private individuals, I said nothing. The village was quite a dangerous place because of the traffic especially for old people and children, their safety was more important to me than an old woman's whims. "Take this tree", she said pausing after a short while. "To you it is just that, a tree. Not unlike many others here". She gently touched the bark. "Look here, under this branch, what can you see?" "It looks as if someone has done a bit of carving with a knife" I said after a cursory inspection. "Yes, that's what it is!" she said softly. "There are letters and a lover's heart". I looked again, this time more carefully. The heart was still there and there was a suggestion of an arrow through it. The letters on one side were indistinct, but on the other an 'R' was clearly visible with what looked like an 'I' after it. "Some budding romance?" I asked, "did you know who they were?" "Oh yes, I knew them", said Mary Smith, "it says RH loves MS". I realised that I could be getting out of my depth, and longed to be in my office, away from here and this old lady, snug, and with a mug of tea in my hand. She went on …"He had a penknife with a spike for getting stones from a horse's hoof, and I helped him to carve my initials. We were very much in love, but he was going away, and could not tell me what he was involved in the army. I had guessed of course. It was the last evening we ever spent together, because he went away the next day, back to his Unit. " Mary Smith was quiet for a while, then she sobbed. "His mother showed me the telegram. 'Sergeant R Holmes ….. Killed in action in the 9)invasion of France'". "'I had hoped that you and Robin would one day get married" she said, "He was my only child, and I would have loved to be a Granny, they would have been such lovely babies'- she was like that! " "Two years later she too was dead. 'Pneumonia, following a chill on the chest' was what the doctor said, but I think it was an old fashioned broken heart. A child would have helped both of us." There was a further pause. Mary Smith gently caressed the wounded tree, just as she would have caressed him. "And now they want to take our tree away from me." Another quiet sob, then she turned to me. "I was young and pretty then, I could have had anybody, I wasn't always the old woman you see here now. I had everything I wanted in life, a lovely man, health and a future to look forwards to". She paused again and looked around. The breeze gently moved through the leaves with a sighing sound. "There were others, of course, but not a patch on my Robin!" she said strongly. "And now I have nothing - except the memories this tree holds. If only I could get my hands on that awful man who writes in the paper about the value of the road they are going to build where we are standing now, I would tell him. Has he never loved, has he never lived, does he not know anything about memories? We were not the only ones, you know, I still meet some who came here as Robin and I did. Yes, I would tell him!" I turned away, sick at heart. The Apple Tree A long time ago, there was a huge apple tree. A little boy loved to come and lay around it every day. He was hungry so he decided to beg for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve(勇气,神经) when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal, he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, "How much do I owe you?""You don’t owe me anything," she replied, "Mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness." He said, "Then I thank you from the bottom of my heart." As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in God and the human race. He was about to give up and quit before this point.Years later, the young woman became critically ill. The local doctors werebaffled(阻碍,迷惑) . They finally sent her to the big city, where specialists can be called in to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly, now famous was called in for theconsultation(咨询,磋商) . When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.Dressed in his doctor’s gown he went in to see her. Herecognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room and determined to do his best to save her life. From that day, he gave special attention to her case. After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it and then wrote something on the side. The bill was sent to her room. She was afraid to open it because she was positive that it would take the rest of her life to pay it off. Finally she looked, and the note on the side of the bill caught her attention. She read these words,"Paid in full with one glass of milk."Dr. Howard KellyTears of joy flooded her eyes as she prayed silently, "Thank You, God. Your love has spread through human hearts and hands." PlantsPlants pursue a never-ending quest for nourishment(食物,营养品) of the liquid and solar variety. Clearly, the very essence of life. But what can our obsession(痴迷,困扰) with plants teach us about our own personal journeys? My aunts, mom and grandma always talk about their plants when they get together. They trade cuttings, smuggling them over state lines to propagate(繁殖,增殖) at home. They discuss their plants like children or pets. They share tips. Compare progress. We turn plants into sentimental(感伤的) objects as we do with books and art, but with plants it’s different because they’re alive. They grow and change. You see photographs of your former apartment, and there’s that peace lily(百合花) , half itspresent size. It’s like looking at old family pictures: “Look how little you used to be!” Plants have a history and a life. That’s why they’re so hard to give up, even when you don’t love them anymore, even when you don’t have room for them. What are you supposed to do, just let them die? Impossible. When I had to move everything out of my house recently, I realized there were more little plants than I was willing to find places for in my new cramped(狭窄的,难懂的) quarters. I thought, it’s silly to be sentimental about these plants. I can replace them later if I want. Yet I just couldn’t give up the succulent(多汁的,多水分的) I kept alive during my first year of teaching. It sat on top of a microwave, in a tiny, dark, cold office space that was really a storage closet with a window. During the times I thought I might lo se my mind, I watched the plant’s health. It refused to wither. It stood hardy and strong, and occasionally sprung a tender new leaf. Sometimes I would forget to water it or take it home during vacations, but it withstood this neglect and stubbornly(顽固地,倔强地) lived on. This buoyed(支撑,鼓励) my spirit more than chocolate or pats on the back. Our adopted foliage(植物,叶子) can serve as a sort of bellwether(前导,领导者) for our lives. Most of us have gone through periods where we let the phone ring, the dishes pile up, and the houseplants shrivel(枯萎,褶皱) . Eventually, the pile ofbrittle(易碎的,脆弱的) leaves collecting beneath the ficus(无花果属) forces us to assess the state of our lives.Of course, because we have sentimentalized our plants, it’s tempting to read their lives for clues to our own. Once, when a relationship was dying, my African violet exploded with unseasonable purple flowers. Maybe, I thought, there’s hope. There was—for the violet. My stepmom visits a particular hemlock(铁杉) in a park near her home every New Year’s D ay. She walks circles around its trunk, one hand on the bark, releasing regrets from the old year and planning for the new one. Her own history and life is now intertwined with the hemlock’s, as year after year, the tree receives her hopes and ushers(招待,引导) them forth with fresh oxygen. “Here you go,” it says. “Here’s some more life.” I wish you were my little girlRecently, I heard a touching story which illustrates(阐明,说明) the power that words have to change a life -- a power that lies right in the hands of those reading this article. Mary had grown up knowing that she was different from the other kids, and she hated it. She was born with a cleft palate(腭裂) and had to bear the jokes andstares(凝视,注视) of cruel children who teased her non-stop about hermisshaped(畸形) lip, crooked(弯曲的,歪的) nose, and garbled(混乱的,篡改的)speech. With all the teasing, Mary grew up hating the fact that she was "different". She was convinced that no one, outside her family, could ever love her ... until she entered Mrs. Leonard's class.Mrs. Leonard had a warm smile, a round face, and shiny brown hair. While everyone in her class liked her, Mary came to love Mrs. Leonard. In the 1950's, it was common for teachers to give their children an annual hearing test. However, in Mary's case, in addition to her cleft palate, she was barely able to hear out of one ear. Determined not to let the other children have another "difference" to point out, she would cheat on the test each year. The "whisper test" was given by having a child walk to the classroom door, turn sideways, close one ear with a finger, and then repeat something which the teacher whispered. Maryturned her bad ear towards her teacher and pretended to cover her good ear. She knew that teachers would often say things like, "The sky is blue," or "What color are your shoes?" But not on that day. Surely, God put seven words in Mrs. Leonard's mouth that changed Mary's life forever. When the "Whisper test" came, Mary heard the words: "I wish you were my little girl."Dads, I wish there was some way that I could communicate to you the incredible blessing which affirming words impart to(告诉,透露) children. I wish, too, that you could sit in my office, when I counsel(劝告,建议) , and hear the terrible damage that individuals received from not hearing affirming words--particularly affirming words from a father. While words from a godly teacher can melt a heart, words from a father can powerfully set the course of a life.If affirming words were something rarely spoken in your home growing up, let me give you some tips on words and phrases that can brighten your own child's eyes and life. These words are easy to say to any child who comes into your life. I'm proud of you, Way to go, Bingo ... you did it, Magnificent(壮丽的,宏伟的) , I knew you could do it, What a good helper, You're very special to me, I trust you, What a treasure, Hurray for you, Beautiful work, You're a real trooper, Well done, That's so creative, You make my day, You're a joy, Give me a big hug, You're such a good listener, You figured it out, I love you, You're so responsible, You remembered, You're the best, You sure tried hard, I've got to hand it to you, I couldn't be prouder of you, You light up(照亮,点亮) my day, I'm praying for you, You're wonderful, I'm behind you, You're so kind to your , You're God's special gift, I'm here for you.。

The Power of DreamsEveryone has dreams. Some dream of becoming doctors, while others dream of becoming artists. Dreams are like stars shining in the night sky; they guide us and give us hope.Dreams ignite our passion and motivate us to pursue our goals. They push us forward, even in the face of difficulties and setbacks. When Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, he had a dream of illuminating the world. Despite failing countless times, he never gave up. His perseverance and determination eventually led to his success.Dreams also give us direction in life. They help us set goals and make plans. Without dreams, life would become dull and monotonous. When I was young, my dream was to become a writer. I spent hours immersed in books, absorbing the beauty of language. Now, I am proud to say that my dream has become a reality. However, dreams alone are not enough. We must take action to turn our dreams into reality. Each step we take brings us closer to our dreams. Along the way, we may encounter obstacles and challenges, but they are just part ofthe journey. With determination and hard work, we can overcome them and continue moving forward. In conclusion, dreams have the power to change our lives. They ignite our passion, give us direction, and push us to achieve greatness. So, dare to dream and work hard to make your dreams come true. Remember, the sky is the limit when it comes to pursuing your dreams. The Importance of FriendshipFriendship is a precious gift that we should cherish. Friends are the ones who support us, lift us up when we are down, and share our joys and sorrows. They make our lives colorful and meaningful. In high school, friends play a significant role in our lives. They understand us better than anyone else and accept us for who we are. Together, we overcome challenges and celebrate achievements. They inspire us to be our best selves and encourage us to pursue our dreams.Friendship also provides a sense of belonging. It is comforting to know that there are people who care about us and have our backs. This support system helps us navigate through the ups and downs of teenage life and gives us the confidence to face any obstacle that comes our way. Moreover, friends teach us important life lessons. They teach us the value of trust, loyalty, and empathy. Through our interactions with friends, we learn how to communicate effectively, resolve conflicts, and cooperate with others. These skills are not only essential for high school but also for our future careers and relationships. In conclusion, friendship is an invaluable asset in our lives. It brings joy, support, and life lessons that shape our character. So, let's cherish our friends and be a friend who is trustworthy, compassionate, and supportive. Remember, true friendship is a treasure that lasts a lifetime. The Power of ChoicesLife is a series of choices. Every decision we make shapes our future and determines the path we take. In high school, the power of choices becomes even more apparent as we face a myriad of options and opportunities. The choices we make in high school can have a lasting impact on our lives. Whether it's deciding which subjects to study, which extracurricular activities to participate in, or which friends to surround ourselves with, these choices shape our character, values, and interests. One important choice we face as high school students is whether to prioritize our academic success or focus on personal growth. Striking the right balance is crucial. Academic achievement is important for future endeavors, but it should not overshadow the development of our character, creativity, and interpersonal skills.Another crucial choice is deciding how we respond to failure and setbacks. Instead of being discouraged, we can choose to see failure as an opportunity to learn and grow. Thomas Edison famously said, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." Embracing a positive mindset and perseverance through challenges can lead to personal growth and eventual success.Furthermore, we have the power to choose our attitude towards life. We can choose to be optimistic, grateful, and kind. These choices not only have a positive impact on our own lives but also influence those around us. Small acts of kindness and positivity can create a ripple effect, making our school and community a better place. In conclusion, the power of choices is immense. Every choice we make in high school shapes our character, influences our path, and creates opportunities for personal growth. So, let's make wise choices, stay true to ourselves, and embrace the journey of self-discovery. Remember, the power to shape our future lies within our choices.

As a teenager,I felt I was always letting people down. I was rebellious1 out-side,but I wanted to be liked inside.Once I left home to hitch-hike2 to California with my friend Penelope. The trip wasn‟t easy, and there were many times I didn‟t feel safe. One situation in particular kept me grateful 3to still be alive. When I returned home,I was different, not so outwardly sure of myself.I was happy to be home. But then I noticed that Penelope, who was staying with us,was wearing my clothes. And my family seemed to like her better than me. I wondered if I would be missed if I weren‟t there. I told my mom,and she explained that though Penelope was a lovely girl,no one could replace me.I pointed out,“She is more patient and is neater tha n I have ever been.” My mom said these were wonderful qualities, but I was the only person who could fill my role. She made me realize that even with my faults—and there were many-I was a loved member of the family who couldn‟t be replaced.I became a searcher, wanting to find out who I was and what made me unique4. My view of myself was changing. I wanted a solid5 base6 to start from. I started to resist7 pressure to act in ways that I didn‟t like any more, and I was delighted8 by who I really was. I came to feel much more sure that no one can ever take my place. Each of us holds a unique place in the world. You are special,no matter what others say or what you may think. So forget about being replaced. You can‟t be.1.rebellious 英[rɪˈbeljəs] 美[rɪˈbɛljəs] adj.

太多的时候,我们总认为光明就在脚下,就在不远的前方,于是忘了去仰望头顶的那片天……If you put a buzzard1 in a pen2) six to eight feet square and entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of its ability to fly, will be an absolute prisoner. The reason is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of ten to twelve feet. Without space to run, as is its habit, it will not even attempt3) to fly, but remain a prisoner for life in a small jail with no top.The ordinary bat that flies around at night, who is a remarkable nimble4) creature in the air, cannot take off from a level place. If it is placed on the floor or flat ground, all it can do is to shuffle5) about helplessly and, no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight elevation6) from which it can throw itself into the air. Then, at once, it takes off like a flash.A bumblebee7) if dropped into an open tumbler8) will be there until it dies, unless it is taken out. It never sees the means of escape at the top, but persists9) in trying to find some way out through the sides near the bottom. It will seek a way where none exists, until it completely destroys itself. In many ways, there are lots of people like the buzzard, the bat and the bumblebee. They are struggling about with all their problems and frustrations10), not realizing that the answer is right there above them.1.buzzard n.

Both my parents came from towns in Mexico. I was born in El Paso, Texas, and when I was four, my family moved to a housing project in East Los Angeles.Even though we struggled to make ends meet, my parents stressed1) to me and my four brothers and sisters how fortunate we were to live in a great country with limitless opportunities. They imbued2) in us the concepts of family, faith and patriotism.I got my first real job when I was ten. My dad, Benjamin, injured his back working in acardboard-box factory and was retrained as a hairstylist. He rented space in a little mall and gave his shop the fancy name of Mr. Ben's Coiffure3).The owner of the shopping center gave Dad a discount on his rent for cleaning the parking lot three nights a week, which meant getting up at 3 a.m. To pick up trash, Dad used a little machine that looked like a lawn mower. Mom and I emptied garbage cans and picked up litter4) by hand. It took two to three hours to clean the lot. I'd sleep in the car on the way home.I did this for two years, but the lessons I learned have lasted a lifetime. I acquired5) discipline and a strong work ethic6), and learned at an early age the importance of balancing life's competing interests7) —in my case8), school, homework and a job. This really helped during my senior year of high school, when I worked 40 hours a week flipping9) burgers at a fast-food joint10) while taking a full load of percolate courses. The hard work paid off11). I attended12) the U.S. Military Academy and went on to receive graduate degrees in law and business from Harvard. Later, I joined a big Los Angeles law firm and was elected to the California state assembly. In these jobs and in everything else I've done, I have never forgotten those days in the parking lot. The experience taught me that there is dignity13) in all work and that if people are working to provide for themselves and their families that is something we should honor.V ocabulary1.stress [stres] v.
