2020年职称英语理工类考试试题库:阅读判断AIDS programs in developing countries put too little emphasis on treatment, the World Health Organization said Tuesday, asking for more small community-based clinics to be opened to treat HIV-infected people. An estimated 36 million to 46 million people are living with AIDS, two-thirds of them in Africa, but only 440,000 people in developing countries were receiving treatment by the end of 2003, the UN health agency said in its annual report.“Without treatment, all of them will die a premature and in m ost cases painful death,” the WHO said in the 169瞤age World Health Report.WHO Director General Lee Jong-wook said community-based treatment should be added to disease prevention and care for sufferers in AIDS programs.“Future generations will judge o ur time in large part by our response to the AIDS disease,” Lee said.“By tackling it decisively we will also be building health systems that can meet the health needs of today and tomorrow. This is a historic opportunity we cannot afford to miss,” he ad ded. Antiretroviral drugs enable people hit by AIDS to live longer. The annual cost of treatment, which was about $10,000 when the drugs were first developed, has dropped to about $150.Treatment programs also help AIDS prevention efforts, the report said, citing great demands for testing and counseling where treatment has been made available.Good counseling in turn leads to more effective prevention in those who are uninfected, and significantly reduces the potential for HIV carriers to pass on the infection, the report said. Since its discovery in the 1980s, more than 20 million have died of AIDS, mostly in poor countries.1. Which is true of many AIDS sufferers in developing countries?A. 2020职称英语《理工类》阅读判断模拟题及参考答案(4)

2020职称英语《理工类》阅读判断模拟题及参考答案(4)Engineering EthicsEngineering ethics is attracting increasing interest in engineering universities throughout the nation. At Texas A&M University, evidence of this interest in professional ethics culminated in the creation of a new course in engineering ethics, as well as a project funded by1 the National Science Foundation to develop material for introducing ethical issues into required undergraduate engineering courses. A small group of faculty and administrators actively supported the growing effort at Texas ASM, yet this group must now expand to meet the needs of increasing numbers of students wishing to learn2 more about the value implications of their actions as professional engineers. The increasing concern for the value dimension3 of engineering is, at least in part, a result of the attention that the media has given to cases such as the Challenger disaster, the Kansas City Hyatt-Regency Hotel walkways collapse, and the Exxon oil spill. As a response to this concern, a new discipline, engineering ethics, is emerging. This discipline will doubtless4 take its place5 alongside such well-established fields as medical ethics, business ethics, and legal ethics. The problem presented by this development is that most engineering professors are not prepared to introduceliterature in engineering ethics into their classrooms. Theyare most comfortable with quantitative concepts6 and often do not believe they are qualified to lead class discussions on ethics. Many engineering faculty members do not think that they have the time in an already overcrowded syllabus to introduce discussions on professional ethics, or the time in their own schedules to prepare the necessary material. Hopefully, the resources presented herein will be of assistance.练习:1.Engineering ethics is a compulsory subject in every institute of science and technology in the Uniled States.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned2.The number of students wishing to take the course of engineering ethics is declining at Texas A&SM University.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned3.The National Science Foundation involves itselfdirectly in writing up material about ethical issues.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned4.It seems that medical ethics and business ethics are more mature than engineering ethics.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned5.Several engineering professors have quit from teaching to protest against the creation of a new course in engineering ethics.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned6.Many engineering professors may not have time toprepare material for class discussion on professional ethics.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned7.It is likely that following this introductory passage, the author will provide the necessary material related to the topic of engineering ethics.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned答案与题解:1.C 本文没有述及engineering ethics是一门必修课,也没有提到美国所有的理工院校都开设了这门学科。

The Theory of EverythingIf Stephen Hawking lives until the year2020, he will have lived more than 50 years longer than Ns doctors expected. When he was a college student, doctors discovered that he had arare disease. This disease causes a gradualdisintegration(分解)of the nerve cells in the braincells that regulate voluntary muscle activity. Death almost always occurswithin two or three years.Today Stephen Hawking cannot walk or speak. He cannot move his arms or his head. He can not taste of smell anything. Andyet this man is Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University, a positionheld by the famous scientist Isaac Newton in 1669.Hawking Is often described as the greatestscientist since Albert Einstein, but to the world outside science. He isalso known as the man who made scientific theory understandable. His book, A Brief History of Time, has sold overeight million copies. He says that since he does not have tothink about his body or do any of the things other men have to worryabout, such as washing the car or working in the yard, he can dedicate all of his timeto thinking. This puts him in theperfect positionto find the answer to the question that he has dedicated his life to. Hisquestion is: Is there a complete theory of the universe and everything in it?Despite his tremendous physicaldisabilities, he has already made some very important discoveries about theorigin of the universe, how the universe holds together, and how it willprobably end. He has also been able to explain the secrets of “black holes”inspace. Now he is looking for a set of rules that everything in our universemust obey. He calls it the Theory of Everything. He thinks that someone willhave found the answer within the next 20 years. If Stephen Hawking it able to find hisTheory of Everything, he will have given the world the opportunity tounderstand things that will change the whole nature of science and probablyalso the way we live.16. Today, his discovery of light-emitting diodes or1 LEDs, are used in everything from DVDs to alarm clocks to airports. Dozens of his students have continued his work, developing lighting used in trafficlights and other everyday technology. On April 23, 2004, Holonyak received the $500,000 Lemelson-MIT Prize at a ceremony in Washington. This marksthe 10th year that the Lemelson-MIT Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT)has given the award to prominent inventors."Anytime you get an award, big or little2, it's always a surprise," Holonyak said.Holonyak, 75, was a student of John Bardeen, an inventorof the transistor, in the early 1950s. After graduate school3, Holonyak worked at Bell Labs. 2020年职称英语考试理工类AB级阅读判断练习(3)

2020年职称英语考试理工类AB级阅读判断练习(3)The Northern LightsThe sun is stormy and has it own kind of weather. It is so hot and active that even the Sun's gravity cannot hold its atmosphere in check! Energy flows away from the Sun towardthe Earth in a stream of electrified particles that move at speeds around a million miles per hour. These particles are called plasma, and the stream of plasma coming from the Sun is called the solar wind. The more active the Sun,the strongerthe solar wind. The solar wind constantly streams toward the Earth, butdon't worry because a protective magnetic fields surroundsour planet. The same magnetic field that makes your compasspoint north also steers the particles from the Sun to thenorth and south poles. The charged particles become trapped in magnetic belts around the Earth. When a large blast of solar wind crashes into the Earth’s magnetic field first gets squeezed and then the magnetic field lines break and reconnect. The breaking and reconnecting of the magnetic field lines can cause atomic particles called electrons trapped in thebelts to fall into the Earth's atmosphere at the poles. As the electrons fall into the Earth, they collide with gas moleculesin the atmosphere, creating flashes of light in the sky. Each atmospheric gas glows a different color.Oxygen and nitrogen glows red and green and nitrogen glows violet-purple.As these various colors glow and dance in the night sky, they createthe Northern Lights and the Southern Lights.Watching auroras is fun and exciting, but normally you can only see them in places far north like Alaska and Canada. The movement of the aurora across the sky is usually slow enough to easily follow with your eyes but they can alsopulsate, flicker,or even move like waves.During solar maximum, auroras are seen as far south as Florida, even Mexico!Auroras often seem to be very close to the ground, but the lowest aurora is still about 100 kilometers above the ground,a distance much higher than clouds are formed or airplanes can fly.A typical aurora band can be thousands of kilometers long,a few hundred kilometers high, but only a few hundred meters thick. We hope you are able to travel to far-north places like the Arctic Circle and see the Northern Lights at least once during your lifetime. We know you will never forget it!1.The Sun's gravity is too weak to keep its plasma from flowing to the Earth.A.rightB.wrongC.not mentioned2.The Earth is quite safe with a magnetic field surrounding it to protect it from the attack by the solar wind.A.rightB.wrongC.not mentioned3.Some scientists are worrying about the possible disappearance of the Earth's protective magnetic field in the future.A.rightB.wrongC.not mentioned4.The auroras are formed when the electrons falling into the Earth's atmosphere at the poles and colliding with gas molecules in the atmosphere.A.rightB.wrongC.not mentioned5.You cannot see the Northern Lights unless you are in Alaska or Canada.A.rightB.wrongC.not mentioned6.Tens of thousands of tourists take special trips to Norway and Sweden every year to watch the Northern Lights.A.rightB.wrongC.not mentioned7.An aurora is generally close to the ground and is very long and thick.A.rightB.wrongC.not mentioned。

2020年职称英语《理工类A》考试阅读判断练习4

2020年职称英语《理工类A》考试阅读判断练习4

2020年职称英语《理工类A》考试阅读判断练习4 Plants in DesertOnly special plants can survive the terrible climate of a desert, for these are regions where the annual range of the soil temperature can be over 75℃. Furthermore, during the summer there are few clouds in the sky to protect plants from the sun's ray. Another problem is the fact that there are frequently strong winds which drive small, sharp particles of sand into the plants, tearing and damaging them. The most difficult problem for all forms of plant life, however, is the fact that the entire annual rainfall occurs during a few days or weeks in spring.Grasses and flowers in desert survive from one year to the next by existing through the long, hot, dry season in the form of seeds. These seeds remain inactive unless the right amount of rain falls. If no rain falls, or if insufficient rain falls, they wait until the next year, or even still the next. Another factor that helps these plants to survive is the fact that their life cycles are short. By the time that the water from the spring rains disappears ——just a few weeks after it falls —— such plants no longer need any.The perennials have special features which enable them to survive as plants for several years. Thus, nearly all desert perennials have extensive root systems below ground and a small shoot system above ground. The large root network enables the plant to absorb as much water as possible in ashort time. The small shoot system, on the other hand, considerably limits water loss by evaporation.Another feature of many desert perennials is that after the rainy season they lose their leaves in preparation for the long, dry season, just as trees in wetter climates lose theirs in preparation for the winter. This reduces their water loss by evaporation during the dry season. Then, in next rainy season, they come fully alive once more, and grow new branches, leaves and flowers, just as the grasses and flowers in desert do.16. Ordinary plants are unable to survive in the desert mainly because of the changeable weather.A. RightB. WrongC. Not mentioned17. Grasses and flowers in desert are able to survive because they stay in the form of seeds to wait for the right amount of water to come.A. RightB. WrongC. Not mentioned18. Grasses and flowers in the desert whose life cycles are short shows their ability to adapt to the quick disappearance of rainwater there after it falls in spring.A. RightB. WrongC. Not mentioned19. Winter is the toughest season for grasses and flowers to survive in desertA. RightB. WrongC. Not mentioned20. The shoot system of perennials can help the plants absorb less of the sun's ray.A. 2020年职称英语理工类阅读判断练习(1)Riches and Romance From France's Wine HarvestSeptember is harvest time. And with bunches of grapes swinging(摇摆)in the wind, the vineyards of southern France are getting ready to celebrate it.The yearly wine festival is held in honour of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine. It's a fun time withparties, music, dancing, big meals and,of course, lots of wine.French wine-making began more than 2,500 years ago.The world's oldest type of vine grows in France and always produces a good quality wine.Today France produces one-fifth of the world's wine, and some of the most famous varieties. The top wine-producing areas are Bordeaux,Burgundy and the Loire Valley.Champagne,a drink used in celebrations,is named after the place where sparkling(有汽泡的)wine wasfirst produced in 1700.Wine is made from the juice of freshly picked grapes. It is the sugars that turn into alcohol.Traditionally, people used to take off their shoes and crush the grapes with their bare feet to bring out thejuice.Nowadays, this practice is usually carried out by machines. Each wine producing region has its own character, based on its type of grapes and soil. The taste of wine changes with time.Until 1850,all French champagne was sweet. Now,both wine and champagne tasteslightly bitter. The drink has always been linked with riches, romance and nobleness.Yet the French think of it in more ordinary terms. They believe it makes daily living easier, less hurried and with fewer problems."All its links are with times when people are at their best;with relaxation, happiness, long slow meals and the free flow of ideas,"wrote wine expert Hugh1.All French people celebrate the grape harvest every September.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned2.In the yearly wine festival, people always enjoy themselves.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned3.Wine—making in France has a history of over 2,500 years.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned4.Many varieties of wine produced in France are named after places.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned5.Different regions in France produce different types of wine.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned6.French wine will taste sour(酸的)in future.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned7.The French people believe that drinking wine is a good way to relax.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned答案:BAACACA。

2020年职称英语理工类阅读判断题(2)

2020年职称英语理工类阅读判断题(2)Plants in DesertOnly special plants can survive the terrible climate of a desert, for these are regions where the annual range of the soil temperature can be over 75℃。

RightB. WrongC. Not mentioned17. 2020年职称英语理工类阅读判断习题及答案:The
Northern Lights
The Northern Lights
The Sun is stormy and has its own kind of weather. It is so hot and active that even the Sun's gravity cannot hold its atmosphere in check! Energy flows away from the Sun toward the Earth in a stream of electrified particles that move at speeds around a million miles per hour. These particles are called plasma, and the stream of plasma coming from the Sun is called the solar wind. The more active the Sun,the stronger the solar wind.
The solar wind constantly streams toward the Earth, but don't worry because a protective magnetic field surrounds our planet. The same magnetic field that makes your compass point north also steers the particles from the Sun to the north and south poles. The charged particles become trapped in magnetic belts around the Earth. When a large blast of solar wind crashes into the Earth's magnetic field, the magnetic field first gets squeezed and then the magnetic field lines break and reconnect.
The breaking and reconnecting of the magnetic field lines can cause atomic particles called electrons trapped in the belts to fall into the Earth's atmosphere at the poles. As the electrons fall to the Earth, they collide with gas molecules
in the atmosphere, creating flashes of light in the sky. Each atmospheric gas glows a different color.Oxygen and nitrogen glows red and green and nitrogen glows violet-purple.As these
various colors glow and dance in the night sky, they create
the Northern Lights and the Southern Lights.
Watching auroras is fun and exciting, but normally you can only see them in places far north like Alaska and Canada. The movement of the aurora across the sky is usually slow enough
to easily follow with your eyes but they can also
pulsate, flicker,or even move like waves.During solar maximum, auroras are seen as far south as Florida, even Mexico!
Auroras often seem to be very close to the ground, but the lowest aurora is still about 100 kilometers above the
ground,a distance much higher than clouds are formed or airplanes can fly.A typical aurora band can be thousands of kilometers long,a few hundred kilometers high, but only a few hundred meters thick.
We hope you are able to travel to far-north places like
the Arctic Circle and see the Northern Lights at least once during your lifetime,We know you will never forget it!
