Thank you all for coming today. On today’s agenda will be the development of the new Kunming City subway system. To introduce this topic of interest will be the Director of Y unnan Provincial Traffic Department Mr. Jiang Y un.

Good morning, distinguished Guests; gentlemen and ladies and dear friends of the press. First of all, on behalf of the People's Government of Y unnan Province and Kunming City, I’d like to express my sincere gratitude and highest respect to those government departments and social communities, especially the friends of the press who support and care about the transportation development of Kunming. Thank you all for your interest in our city’s subway construction.

The total investment of this construction project is nearly 100 billion yuan and it is the second biggest investment after the investment of the Kunming New International Airport. The subway will become an important part of Kunming’s transportation. Kunming Metro system will have six lines by 2020 whose total length is 162.6 km; in the future there will be nearly 10 lines over 300 km length.

The first project started on May 1, 2010. Ground-breaking began along Spring City Road, Beijing Road. These initial construction sites are Metro Line No. 1 and No. 2, which, at the moment is the entire extent of subway construction in Kunming. The subway project will be through the main city planning area, and is expected to be completed by late 2012 or early 2013. This project will be a positive promotion for the Kunming multi-dimensional traffic system both above and below ground.

Kunming, the largest city in Y unnan Province, and its urban traffic has a significant feature："crowded inside and out". Despite the newly finished second ring road expressway which has helped mitigate the traffic congestion, road construction is far behind the rapid growth of motor vehicles. At present, the number of vehicles has reached 1.18 million, and still growing by a rate of approximately 400 everyday, which continues to make tremendous pressure on urban traffic. Kunming has entered a critical period because of quickly developing industrialization, urbanization, and internationalization. Subway construction is the inevitable choice to improve the traffic situation.. The subway will quickly become the core to Kunming life!

The completion of the Kunming subway will be a milestone in transportation construction in Kunming and even in traffic construction in

Y unnan Province. There will be an initial construction of six lines, “three main lines and three branch lines.”The subway system will encompass four major regions of Kunming: Wuhua Kunming, Xishan District, Guandu District, Chenggong New Area. Line 1 will travel from the main city to University Town in the south of Chenggong, and will be the axis to support and promote the development of Chenggong New Area Construction by connecting the two areas. Line 2 will start from Milky Way Area in the north and will run vertically through the central part of the city to the north shore of Dianchi Lake in the south. This line will be the north-to-south main axis of the subway in order to solve the need of transporting passengers in these directions.

There is no doubt that as the arms of the subway extend far into the borders of the city so will it expand the reach of people’s lives in relation to where they work and play. It has been predicted that within 3 years time, more and more young people and new immigrants to the city will choose to live in the outer rings of the city. They will be able to live in Fubao, Da Shanghui, and Chenggong New Areas, and yet still choose to work in the downtown area at the same time. People will be able travel across previously unthinkable distances at a speed that was unimaginable in the past and will be able to travel freely around the city, enjoying the diversity and richness of Kunming life.
