It is a mistake to think that, for each story, there is one “correct” interpretation for all readers.
The first-person narration:
The first-person narration is provided by a narrator inside the story as the main character, or a participant, or an observer. This way of narration can present incidents more convincingly as the story is told by “I” personally. But the first-person narrator is, by definition, limited because he presents a situation as only one person sees it.
Does the piece of washing soap (in “A Piece of Yellow Soap”) have the “power” as the narrator tells us? What is the “power” that forces him to take off?
The two first-person narrators tell two stories of two washwomen who share similar tragic fates. Discuss the differences in the narrators that result in the differences in the way the two short stories are told, and the different effect achieve. 爱伦坡《泄密的心》分析

The narrator in “The Tell-Tale Heart”This short fiction uses the first-person narration to tell us a horrible murder story. The narrator in the fiction is an unnamed killer who murdered the old man. While reading this fiction, I considered that this narrator is a good storyteller. But in my opinion, he is an unreliable narrator and his not persuasive. “Here, here! --It is the beating of his hideous heart! ()" The narrator yelled in the end. How can a dead person have such a loud sound of heart beat? Obviously he is totally mad and only controlled by his fantasy. There are many descriptions out of reality except this one, so I think he is not a reliable narrator and his language is attractive but not persuasive.I think the narrator has a neurotic personality, and he is a cruel psychopath. At the very beginning of the story, he said, “True! —nervous—very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad?”(). This sentence makes me uncomfortable, because such a weird atmosphere surrounds me and I don’t know what the mad narrator is going to do. I judge him as a person who has the neurotic personality, because he said he desired his eyes and didn’t care about his treasures (). He killed an old man just because the old man’s vulture eyes. The poor old man didn’t have some annoying behavior or some words can make the narrator really mad. This motive for murder is very ridiculous and seems unreasonable, and this makes contribution to let me verify that the narrator is a psychopath. It can’t be denied that he is a very careful killer. While walking into the old man’s room at the eighth night, he opened the lantern extremely careful and said “you cannot imagine how stealthily, stealthily -- until at length a single dim ray like the thread of the spider shot out from the crevice and fell upon the vulture eye.”(). Exaggeration this description is, but it makes me notice the madman’s carefulness and cautiousness. The narrator brought me into the scene and makes the story effective for me by his attractive and extraordinary language. In addition, his description is full of the details of the crime and filled with his own feelings and these made me felt very nervous while reading this novel. The narrator killed the old man with a strange motive, so I am wondering how his eyes made the narrator mad. Another question is, the narrator didn’t felt a little guilty and even have a pleasure after the murder, why his sense of guilt became so strong in the end? I think this can help me know more about the narrator.。

The Tell-Tale HeartIntroduction“The Tell-Tale Heart” is a famous short story written by Edgar Allan Poe. It was first published in 1843 and is known for its dark and suspenseful nature. The story revolves around the narrator’s obsession with an old man’s eye and the horrifying events that unfold as a result. This article delves into the main themes, symbolism, and literary techniques used in “The Tell-Tale Heart.”Summary“The Tell-Tale Heart” is narrated by an unnamed protagonist who tries to convince the reader of their sanity while simultaneously confessing to a heinous crime. The story begins with the narrator explaining the reason behind their madness. They claim that they are not mad but rather have an acute sense of hearing. The narrator then describes their obsession with an old man’s vulture-like eye, which they believe isevil and must be destroyed. The protagonist meticulously plans the murder, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. On the eighth night, they enter the old man’s room and shine a light on the eye, revealing their presence. Overwhelmed by fear, the old man shrieks, and the narrator suffocates him with a heavy bed. After ensuring the old man is dead, the narrator dismembers the body and hides it beneath the floorboards. As the story progresses, the narrator becomes increasingly paranoid, hearing the old man’s heart beating from beneath the floor. Consumed by guilt, they confess their crime to the police, believing that the officers also hear the incessant beating. The story ends with the narrator’s final admission of their insanity.Themes1. Guilt and Conscience“The Tell-Tale Heart” explores the theme of guilt and conscience. The narrator’s guilt manifests in their increasing paranoia and obsession with the old man’s beating heart. This guilt drives them to confesstheir crime, unable to bear the burden any longer. Poe highlights the torment caused by a guilty conscience, suggesting that the truth will always find a way to reveal itself.2. MadnessMadness is a prevalent theme in Poe’s works, and “The Tell-Tale Heart” is no exception. T he narrator’s distorted perception of reality andtheir obsession with the old man’s eye are clear indications of their descent into madness. The story raises questions about the fine line between sanity and insanity and the extent to which one’s mind can be trusted.3. Fear and ParanoiaFear and paranoia play a significant role in “The Tell-Tale Heart.”The narrator’s fear of the old man’s eye drives them to commit the heinous act. However, this fear transforms into paranoia as they are haunted by the soun d of the old man’s beating heart. Poe skillfully portrays the effects of fear and paranoia on the human psyche, leadingto a chilling climax.Symbolism1. The EyeThe eye symbolizes the narrator’s obsession and the evil they perceivein the old man. It ser ves as a metaphor for the narrator’s own guilt,as they believe the eye can see through their facade of sanity. The eye also represents the concept of inner truth, as the narrator’s obsession ultimately leads to their confession.2. The HeartThe beating h eart symbolizes the narrator’s guilt and the persistenceof truth. It serves as a constant reminder of their crime, tormenting them until they can no longer bear the weight of their guilt. Theheart’s sound becomes a symbol of the narrator’s deteriorating mental state, driving them to confess their crime.Literary Techniques1. First-Person Narration“The Tell-Tale Heart” is narrated in the first person, allowingreaders to delve into the mind of the unreliable narrator. This perspective creates a sense of intimacy and immediacy, intensifying the story’s suspense and the reader’s engagement.2. RepetitionPoe uses repetition throughout the story to emphasize the narrator’s obsession and increasing madness. Phrases such as “I loved the old man” and “I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth” are repeated, creating a sense of unease and building tension.3. ForeshadowingPoe employs foreshadowing to build suspense and hint at the narrator’s eventual confession. The narrator’s constant references to thei r sanity and their insistence that they are not mad foreshadow their eventual descent into madness and guilt.4. Symbolic ImageryPoe’s use of vivid and symbolic imagery enhances the story’s impact. The description of the old man’s eye as vulture-like and evil creates a sense of dread and repulsion. The imagery of the beating heart beneaththe floorboards evokes a visceral response, heightening the story’s tension. Conclusion“The Tell-Tale Heart” is a masterful work of Gothic fiction that explores themes of guilt, madness, fear, and paranoia. Through its use of symbolism and literary techniques, the story delves into the dark recesses of the human mind, leaving readers with a sense of unease and a deeper understanding of the complexities of the human psyche. Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” continues to captivate readers with its timeless themes and chilling narrative.。

Point of view

Point of view

• The filmmaker can cut easily from a subjective point-of –view shot(first person) to a variety of objective shots. He can concentrate on a single reaction (close-up) or the simultaneous reactions of several characters (long shot). With a matter of seconds , the film director can show us a cause and effect, an action and a reaction.
Narrative structure
Definition
• The way a director chooses to tell the story—the narrative structure---is also an important element of style. A director may choose to build a simple , straightforward, chronological sequence of events or a complex elliptical structure, jumping back and forth in time.
• The fist person-narrator tells his own story. In some cases, he is an objective observer who can be relied upon to relate the events accurately. Many films employ fist person narrative techniques, but only sporadically. The cinematic equivalent to the “voice” of the literary narrator is the “eye” of the camera, and this difference is an important one. In literature, the distinction between the narrator and the reader is clear: it’s as if the reader were listening to a friend tell a story. In film, however, it identifies with the lens and thus tends to fuse with the narrator.

Laura is a smart, beautiful and elegant woman, and these deeply attracted him, so he decided to set sail away with her. This novel uses the exact words, and a lot of painting with the words and shapes, lines and colors. Especially the expression of color word usage is a best using. The Novel pays much attention to the words and sentences in the selection of syllable rhythm, which makes the work read rhythmic clang, as the beauty of poet. And a large number of specific accurate and vivid use of the verb in the novel narrative, dynamic and static description of each other, this is an importantfeature of narrative aesthetics. We can read a rich diversity of rhetoric in the novel. Such as “it may precipitous bluffs of grey limestone rising sheer out of the sea.”,“The young moon lies on her back tonight as is her habit in the tropics.” Also with the help of natural scenery description and the characters' inner melody writing, making its content with the implication of poetry, the symbolic image with poetry. After reading this text, I could not help but be impressed by the author and fluent language, rich imagery and association. We share the protagonist inner joy and novelty, conflict and sorrow. These are my understanding of poetic characteristics about the text.。

First Person Point of View
A first person narrator is usually also the main character, or protagonist, in a story. Because the protagonist only knows his own thoughts, his perspective is limited. The reader only receives information from the protagonist's perspective, and he may be naïve or unreliable. However, first person narration imparts to the reader a sense of immediacy and realism. Additionally, because the reader sees events through the eyes of the protagonist, the reader almost feels as though he were part of the character.
Intimacy
The narrator is also a character in a first person novel, making for a more intimate perspective for the reader. Whether the narrator is the protagonist or a more minor character, the reader gets a sense of being closer to the action, among the other characters. A first person narrator can tell a story from the present, or from the perspective of an older, wiser self looking back on the events. In either case, the first person perspective gives the reader a sense of personally knowing the character. Reliability
Telling a story in first person allows an author to creatively withhold information. Readers naturally believe what a narrator tells them, but a writer may not necessarily create a reliable narrator. A first person narrator can be mistaken, lie or be insane, and a writer can choose to reveal the truth at a later point in a story. A writer can also hint at a narrator's unreliability, leaving the reader to draw conclusions about the level of truth in a narrator's version of events. Experimenting with reliability can lend suspense to a story and make for particularly interesting characterization. Creating a first person narrator who is less than sane, or who doesn't know or understand all that happens in a story can also make a story far more complex.
Naturalness
Since we use first person when speaking in real life, some authors believe writing in first person is easier than third. First person can be more straightforward, with a narrator who says what he feels and sees, rather than a narrator who describes what someone else feels. Writing in first person also requires a writer only to inhabit a single character's thought process, rather than switching between several characters' perspectives. Some writers argue that using a first person perspective simplifies the writing process.。
