Jane Austen (1775-1817)(简·奥斯汀)
1. Life (生平)
Jane Austen was the seventh child of Reverend George Austen, rector of Stevenson, and was born in the parsonage of the village in 1775. She passed all her life in doing small domestic duties in the countryside. She was educated at home and began to write at an early age. It was not until Walter Scott’s anonymous article full of admiration to Emma when Austen began to be known. Austen was a bright and attractive little woman, but she was averse to publicity and popularity. She died, quietly as she had lived, at Winchester in 1817, and was buried in the cathedral. Austen was at her best in writing about young girls, because she understood them astonishingly well.
2. Major Works of Austen
Sense and Sensibility(1811)《
Pride and Prejudice(1813)《

3. Selected works (作品选读)
◆Pride and Prejudice《
Pride and Prejudice mainly tells of the love story between a rich proud young man Darcy and the poor, beautiful and intelligent Elizabeth Bennet, one of the daughters in Bennet’s family. At first, Elizabeth detests Darcy and refuses Darcy’s proposal for his behavior towards her family and friends, though some of the matters are misunderstandings. In Elizabeth’s eyes, Darcy has nothing but pride. But after a series of things, Elizabeth knows about the true Darcy who is kind-hearted and noble. In the end, they are happily united.
Comment on Pride and Prejudice (赏析)
Pride and Prejudice is Jane Austen’s masterpiece. In thi s novel, Jane Austen mainly describes four marriages to show the reader that different people have different attitudes towards love and marriage and she also tells us that a combination based on love and similarities is happy and perfect marriage. In her opinion, the money-orientede marriage and sex-oriented marriage are not successful though people can live together.
4. Features of her writings
Austen’s no vels are britened by their witty conversation and omnipresent humour. Her stories are skillfully woven together; her plots never leave the path of realism, and have always been sensible. Her language shines with elegant and refined, but never showy. She herself compared her work to a fine engraving made up on a little piece of ivory only two inches square. The comparison is true. The ivory surface is small enough, but the lady who made the drawings of human life on it was a real artist.
