RESEARCH/WORK EXPERIENCE
2009 Summer Screened for anti-cancer compounds specific for multiple myeloma cell lines and sparing stromal cells
in co-culture. Under the guidance of Stuart Schreiber at the Broad Institute of Harvard/MIT.
2006-09 Screened for and characterized specific allosteric inhibitors of Histone Deacetylase enzymes via
enzymatic assay and small-molecule microarray. Under the guidance of Jon Clardy at Harvard Medical
School and Stephen Haggarty at the Broad Institute of Harvard/MIT.
2007 Summer Worked with the Association for Private Health Facilities in Tanzania in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Spearheaded implementation of nationwide diabetes treatment program – designed data collection and
analysis system, education program; selected 80 clinics for treatment; began equipment procurement
and medical training logistics. Traveled to rural regions to field-test components of the program and
conduct needs assessments. Also assisted in developing microfinance project; addressing domestic
health worker retention; improving research capacity at the Muhimibili Medical School. Under the
guidance of Jeffrey Blander of the Harvard School of Public Health and the Bienmoyo Foundation.
2006 Summer Characterized a proteome of Fucose α(1-2) Galactose glycoproteins, which are implicated in memory
storage and dendrite outgrowth. Also attempted to discover a novel cytosolic fucosyltransferase and
study its enzymatic activity. Under the guidance of Linda Hsieh-Wilson, PhD at the California
Institute of Technology.
2005-06 Investigated mice expressing proof-reading deficient version of mitochondrial DNA polymerase;
analysis of mutational burden, neuron density, stereology of substantia nigra and striatum. Under the
guidance of David Simon, MD PhD at Beth Israel Deaconess/Harvard Medical School.
2004 Conducted research on Ogg1 and Mth1 knockout mice; analysis of mutational burden in striatum and
neuronal density in substantia nigra; under the guidance of Dr. David Simon.
2002-2004 Conducted research on Swarm Engineering and non-pheromone-mediated target localization and
transportation under the guidance of Dr. Sanza Kazadi at Jisan Research Institute.
