First, they 14that the main reason students go to school is to learn core subjects and skills. Because service learning is time-consuming, students spend 15time studying the core subjects. Second, they believe that forcing students to work without 16goes against the law. By requiring service, the school takes away an individual"s freedom to choose. In my view, service learning is a great way to 17to the community, learn new skills, and explore different careers. 18, I don"t believe you should force people to help others — the 19to help must come from the heart. It could not be bought in shops and even those people who could afford to have it sent from Holland did so only because it was a fashionable curiosity. Some of them were not sure how to use it They thought it was a vegetable and tried cooking the leaves Then they served them mixed with butter and salt They soon discovered their mistake but many people used to spread the used tea leaves on bread and give them to their children as sandwichesTea remained scarce and very expensive in England until the ships of the East India Company began to bring it direct from China early in the seventeenth century during the next few years so much tea came into the country that the price fell and many people could afford to buy itAt the same time people on the Continent were becoming more and more fond of tea until then tea had been drunk without milk in it, but one day a famous French lady named Madame de Sevigne decided to see what tea tasted like when milk was added. She found it so pleasant that she would never again drink it without milk Because she was such a great lady her friends thought they must copy everything she did, so they also drank their tea with milk in it Slowly this habit spread until it reached England and today only very few Britons drink tea without milkAt first, tea was usually drunk after dinner in the evening No one ever thought of drinking tea in the afternoon until a duchess (公爵夫人) found that a cup of tea and a piece of cake at three or four o"clock stopped her getting“a sinking feeling”as she called it She invited her friends to have this new meal with her a nd so, tea-time was bornWhich of the following is true of the introduction of tea into Britain?A、The Britons got expensive tea from IndiaB、Tea reached Britain from HollandC、The Britons were the first people in Europe who drank teaD、It was not until the 17th century that the Britons had teaThis passage mainly discusses ________A、the history of tea drinking in BritainB、how tea became a popular drink in BritainC、how the Britons got the habit of drinking teaD、how tea-time was bornTea became a popular drink in Britain ________A、in eighteenth centuryB、in sixteenth centuryC、in seventeenth centuryD、in the late seventeenth centuryPeople in Europe began to drink tea with milk because ________A、it tasted like milkB、it tasted more pleasantC、it became a popular drinkD、Madame de Sevigne was such a lady with great social influence that people tried to copy the way she drank tea【答案】:【解析】:第5题【阅读理解】阅读理解The writings of Shakespeare are today little read by young people in Britain. His young readership is limited to those who choose to study literature at university.Shakespeare"s work, together with most other classics, is seen as remote, and written in a 400-year-old version of English that is about as inviting as toothache.Still, in Britain schools, it is compulsory to study the bard(诗人), and when something is made compulsory, usually the result is boredom, resentment(憎恨) or both. This was my experience of the classics at school. But when I reached my late teenage years, I had a change of heart. Like every other young person since the dawn of time, the world confused me. I wanted answers, so I turned to books to find them.I went on to take a PhD in literature and have taught it in Britain and China. I have never regretted it. There is something in literature that people want, even if they don"t read books. You see this in the popularity of TV and movie adaptations of great works, the recent film version of Jane Austen"s Pride and Prejudice being a case in point. These popular adaptations may help increase people"s interest in the classics.Reading a simplified Romeo and Juliet may perhaps lead to a reading of Shakespeare"s actual play. If that is the case, then I welcome the trend. But do not make the mistake of thinking that it is the same thing. Shakespeare is a poet. His greatness is in his language. Reading someone else"s rewriting of his work is like peeling a banana, throwing away the fruit, and eating the skin. Take on the original. It really is worth the effort.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A、The language used in classics is no longer in use today.B、British students usually find compulsory reading dull.C、Only those studying literature read Shakespeare"s works.D、For British people, Shakespeare"s works are no longer classics.According to the passage, the writer .A、has liked literary classics since an early ageB、was forced to read the classics for a PhDC、turned to literature to seek answers in his teensD、thinks only people who read books like literatureThe underlined phrase "a case in point"in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to "".A、a great hitB、a good exampleC、a movie adaptationD、a popular phenomenon【答案】:【解析】:第6题【阅读理解】阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

AI woke up late and had breakfast in a hurry. I had never been late and didn't want my boss to be unsatisfied. However, it seemed that the day wasn't a lucky one for me from the very second I left my flat. The moment I wanted to rush downstairs, one of my stiletto heels (细高跟) broke. I had to return to change my red shoes. I also had to change my purse and other little things that I had tried to match with the shoes. I was sure I would be late for work.On my way to work I had to wait for over half an hour because of an accident. I had no choice but to wait. I phoned my boss and he told me that it was no problem, but he needed me for the meeting with the Japanese clients (客户) that morning. Finally, I arrived at the office one hour later. I had to keep calm and be fresh for the meeting to make the clients sure that our plan was the best for their future business project. However, I left the plan I had made the night before at home and was going to make a presentation (介绍) about it to the clients. I was about to get angry when I realized that I had a copy of it in my office. At last, the meeting came to an end and it turned out to be a success. But I have to say that I had a terrible day, full of incidents.1.Which of the following is NOT the reason of the writer being late for her work?A. She got up late in the morning.B. There are good restaurants in Little Italy and Chinatown, for example.HotelsThere are lots of good hotels in New York. The best is the Plaza on the 5th Avenue, but you don't have to spend a lot in the city. There are lots of smaller hotels and the YMCA near the Central Park is great for young people.Public transportIn New York, there's a good bus and subway service. If you are planning to use the subway a lot, you should buy a subway ticket for the journey because it's cheaper. But you don't have to use the public transport — there are lots of places you can go to on foot, such as the Empire State Building, the 5th Avenue and the Central Park. The New Taxis are a part of the city experience, so you should take at least one taxi during your visit.Places to seeFinally, there are a lot of places to see in New York — the Times Square, the Statue of Liberty, and so on. And you shouldn't go home without climbing the Statue of Liberty to enjoy the scenery of the city.ShoppingShopping in New York is fun. There are big shops on the 5th Avenue. But there also are some they like. They protect crops against damage from other insects. A good example is the lady beetle, which is also known as the ladybug(瓢虫).Lady beetles are a natural control for aphids(蚜虫). Lady beetles are red, orange or black. They often have black spots, though some have light colored spots. Different kinds of lady beetles have different numbers of spots. There are lady beetles with four, five, seven and fourteen spots. Many of the well-known kinds of lady beetles come from Asia or Europe. They now are common throughout the United States.American scientists imported one kind of lady beetle, the multicolored Asian lady beetle, as early as 1916. They released them as an attempt to control some kinds of insects. Over the years, the beetle has become established, possibly helped by some that arrived with imported plants on ships.Experts say over 450 kinds of lady beetles are found in North America. Some are native to the area. Others have been brought from other places. Almost all are helpful to farmers. The Asian lady beetles now in the United States probably came from Japan. The Asian lady beetle eats aphids that damage crops like soybeans, fruits and berries. In the southern United States, Asian lady beetles have reduced the need for farmers to use reskilling poisons on pecan trees. This popular tree nut suffers from aphids and other pests that the lady beetles eat.But some people say the Asian lady beetle has itself become a pest. They worry that the lady beetles may eat their late autumn fruit crops.Experts say Asian lady beetles may appear in large numbers in some years. But they say the insects are too helpful to be considered as pests. What do ladybugs look like?A、All kinds of ladybugs are of the same color.B、Most of them are red, orange or black.C、They each have the same number of spots on them.D、Most of them have fourteen spots.Asian ladybugs have been in the United States for______.A、nine decadesB、hundreds of yearsC、half a centuryD、a centuryAccording to the passage the following statements are supported EXCEPT________.A、there are more than 450 kinds of ladybugs in North America, including native onesB、only some imported ladybugs are helpful to the local plantsC、soybeans, fruits and berries are favorites of aphids.D、pecan trees are common in the south of AmericaAccording to the experts, ladybugs are________.A、more helpful than considered as petsB、more pests than helpful insectsC、helpful as well as destructiveD、are more destructive than helpful【答案】:【解析】:第3题【阅读理解】阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
