It was still too early for me to have my evening meal, so I walked along the seafront (滨海马路)for about an hour until I began to feel hungry. By that time I was not far from a favorite restaurant of mine, where I often went to eat two or three times a week.I knew the owner well and frequently complimented (赞美,恭维)him on his excellent cooking.I went into the restaurant, which was already crowded, and ordered my meal. While I was waiting for the soup to arrive, I looked around to see if I knew anyone in the restaurant. It was then that I noticed that a man sitting at a corner table near the door kept glancing in my direction, as if he knew me, I certainly did not know him, for I never forgot a face. The man had a newspaper open in front of him, which he was pretending to read, though all the while I could see that he was keeping an eye on me. When the waiter brought my soup, the man was clearly puzzled by the familiar way in which the waiter and I addressed each other. He became even more puzzled as time went on and it grew more and more obvious that I was well known in the restaurant. Eventually he got up and went into the kitchen. After a few minutes he came out again, paid his bill and left without another glance in my direction. When I had finished and was about to pay my bill, I called the owner of the restaurant over and asked him what the man had wanted. The owner was a little embarrassed by my question and at first did not want to tell me. I insisted. "Well,” he said, “that man was a detective.M“Really?” I said, considerably surprised. "He followed you here because he thought you were a man he was looking for,” the owner of the restaurant said. “When he came into the kitchen, he showed me a photograph of the wanted man. He certainly looked like you! Of course, since we know you here, I was able to convince him that he had madea mistake.M“It's lucky I came to a restaurant where I am known,” I said, “otherwise I might have been arrested!"1. According to the text, if the author had been a stranger in the restaurant, he would have been.A) taken to courtB) followedC) capturedD) sentenced to a few years5 imprisonmentA very important world problem is the rapidly increasing pressure of population on land and on land resources. It is not so much the actual population of the world but its rate of increase which is important. It works out to be about 1.6 per cent per annum net increase. In terms of numbers this means something like forty to fifty-five million additional people every year. Canada has a population of twenty million-rather less than six months1 climb in world population. Take Australia. There are ten million people in Australia. So, it takes the world less than three months to add to itself a population which peoples that vast country. Let us take our own crowded country-England and Wales: forty-five to fifty million people—just about a year's supply.By this time tomorrow, and every day, there will be added to the earth about 120X)00 extra people, just about the population of the city of York. This enormous increase of population will create immense problems. By A.D. 2000, unless something desperate happens, there will be as many as 7,000,000,000 people on the surface of this earth! So this is a problem which you arc going to see in your lifetime. Why is this enormous increase in population taking place? It is really due to the spread of the knowledge and the practice of what is coming to be called Death Control. Death Control is something rather different from Birth Control. Death Control recognizes the work of the doctors and the nurses and the hospitals and the health services in keeping alive people who, a few years ago, would have died of some of the incredibly serious killing diseases, as they used to be. Squalid conditions, which wc can remedy by an improved standard of living, caused a lot of disease and dirt. Medical examinations at school catch diseases early and ensure healthier school children. Scientists are at work stamping our malaria and other more deadly diseases. If you are seriously ill there is an ambulance to take you to a modern hospital. Medical care helps to keep people alive longer. We used to think seventy was a good age; now eighty, ninety, it may be, arc coming to be recognized as a normal age for human beings. People are living longer because of this Death Control, and fewer children are dying, so the populationof the world is shooting up.Imagine the position if you and I and everyone else living on earth shared the surface between us. How much should we have each? It would be just over twelve acres~the sort of size of a small holding. But not all that is useful land which is going to produce food. We can cut out one-fifth of it, for example, as being too cold. That is land which is covered with ice and snow-Antarctica and Greenland and the great frozen areas of northern Canada. Then we can cut out another fifth as being too dry—the great deserts of the world like the Sahara and the heart of Australia and other areas where there is no known water supply to feed crops and so to produce food. Then we can cut out another fifth as being too mountainous or with too great an elevation above sea level. Then we can cut out another tenth as land which has insufficient soil, probably just rock at the surface. Now, out of the twelve acres only about four are left as suitable for producing food.. But not all that is used. It includes land with enough soil and enough rainfall or water, and enough heat which, at present, wc arc not using, such as, for example, the great Amazon forests and the Congo forest and the grasslands of Africa. How much are we actually using? Only a little over one acre is what is required to support one human being on an average at the present time.6. The effects of such a change in climate on the human population of the world would be startling・Recent research suggests that the general warming trend of past hundred years or so may be coming to an end. During the past the years, meteorologists tell us the average temperature of the earth has dropped about one degree Fahrenheit・ This does not seem like much, but it could have effects on wind and rain patterns which influence the overall weather picture. If these patterns change a lot, it could mean that certain regions of the would may continue to have long droughts while others will possibly suffer from widespread flooding・What regulates the climate is not exactly known. Meteorologists believe that clouds may be an important factor in regulating the amount to solar heat by the earth, which in turn determines the temperature of the planet. The mystery of the homing pigeon is on how itn avigates and how it finds home. We now know that there are two ways thatpigeons tell directions. First, they use the sun. Just getting rough directi ons from the sun is easy. However, gett ing accurate directi ons from the sun takes more care. To tell directi on accurately from the sun, one n eedsto know the exact time. All plants and animals seem to have built-in clocks. Usually these biological clocks are not quite exact in measuring time. However, they workpretty well, because they are “reset ” every day, maybe when the sun gets up.Do pige ons use their biological clocks to help them find directi on fromthe sun? Wecan experiment to find out. Wecan keep pigeons in a room lighted only by lamps. And we can time the lighting to maketheir artificial “days”start at somedifferent time from the real outside day. After a while we have shifted their clocks. Now we take them far away from home and let them go on a sunny day. Most of them start out as if they know just which way to go, but choose a wrong directi on. They have picked a directi on that would be correct for the position of the sun and the time of day according to their shifted clocks. The above experiment shows that homing pigeons can tell directions by the sun. What happe ns whe n the sky is darklyovercast by clouds and no one can see where the sun is? The pigeons still find their way home. So it seems that pige ons also have some extra sense of directi on from the earth ' s magn etic field whe n they cannot see the sun.11. 背诵段落Unit1 A1In the fall of our final year, our mood changed. The relaxed atmosphere of the preceding summer semester, the impromptu ball games, the boating on the Charles River, the late-night parties had disappeared, and we all started to get our heads down, studying late, and attendance at classes rose steeply again. We all sensed we were coming to the end of our stay here, that we would never get a chance like this again, and we became determined not to waste it. Most important of course were the final exams in April and May in the following year. No one wanted the humiliation of finishing last in class, so the peer group pressure to work hard was strong. Libraries, which were once empty after five o'clock in the afternoon were standing room only until the early hours of the morning, and guys wore the bags under their eyes and their pale, sleepy faces with pride, like medals proving their diligence.Unit3 A1,4,61 We all listen to music according to our separate capacities. But, for the sake of analysis, the whole listening process may become clearer if we break it up into its component parts, so to speak. In a certain sense we all listen to music on three separate planes. For lack of a better terminology, one might name these: (1) the sensuous plan e, (2) the expressive plane, (3) the sheerly musical plane. The only advantage to be gained from mechanically splitting up the listening process into these hypothetical planes is the clearer view to be had of the way in which we listen.4 Yes, the sound appeal of music is a potent and primitive force, but you must not allow it to usurp a disproportionate share of your interest. The sensuous plane is an important one in music , a very important one , but it does not constitute the whole story.6 Listen , if you can, to the 48 fugue themes of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavichord . Listen to each theme, one after another. You will soon realize that each theme mirrors a different world of feeling. You will also soon realize that the more beautiful a theme seems to you the harder it is to find any word that will describe it to your complete satisfaction. Yes, you will certainly know whether it is a gay theme or a sad one. You will be able,in other words, in your own mind, to draw a frame of emotional feeling around your theme. Now study the sad one a little closer. Try to pin down the exact quality of its sadness. Is it pessimistically sad or resignedly sad; is it fatefully sad or smilingly sad?Unit4 B7,117Business travellers too can suffer from homesickness . Ask any frequent flyer in their forties or fifties "Do you still enjoy the thrill of travel?",and they'll probably sigh and reply that the sense of separation is now too strong. The comfort of a luxury hotel room during a weekend on their own in a foreign city is infinitely less appealing than taking the children to the park or a ball game. For professional exiles, homesickness is acknowledged as part of culture shock, a stage everyone goes through sooner or later after the initial enthusiasm for one's new surroundings , and as cynicism and despondency set in. Acknowledging that one is homesick may help avoid the risk of anxiety and depression.11Homesickness is both a painful longing to be back home, and an extremely common occurrence. It's not immature or something to be ashamed of. Maybe, just maybe, it's when your parents die that you make your own home , that you no longer have to suppress your feelings of homesickness. Can you finally indulge in your strong feeling s for your own home?Unit5 A2,32 Josh Lester turned into 46th Street. He was not yet enjoying the Christmas spirit, because he was still at work, albeit a working dinner at Joanne's.Josh was black, in his early thirties, and an agreeable-looking person, dressed smartly but not expensively. He was from a hard-working family in upstate Virginia , and was probably happiest back home in his parents'house. But his demeanor concealed a Harvard law degree and an internship in DC with a congressman, a junior partnership in a New York law firm , along with a razor-sharp intellect and an ability to think on his feet . Josh was very smart.3 The appointment meant Josh wouldn't get home until after Christmas. He was not, however, unhappy. He was meeting Jo Rogers, the senior senator for Connecticut, and one of the bestknown faces in the US . Senator Rogers was a Democrat in her third term of office, who knew Capitol Hill inside out but who had nevertheless managed to keep her credibility with her voters as a Washington outsider. She was pro-abortion, anti-corruption , pro-low carbon emissions and anti-capital punishment , as fine a progressive liberal as you could find this side of the Atlantic . Talk show hosts called her Honest Senator Jo , and a couple of years ago , Time magazine had her in the running for Woman of the Year . It was election time in the following year , and the word was she was going to run for the Democratic nomination.Rogers had met Josh in DC, thought him highly competent, and had invited him to dinner.中译英Unit1中国有一句话,叫“人贵有自知之明”。

Formal consent for this new type of treatment was obtained from each patient and the study (conformed to) our institution's guidelines concerning medical ethics (伦理).Where there is a will, there is a way. This proverb means that if you are really determined to do something, however difficult it might be, you will (1)(eventually) find a way to do it well. The (2)(premier) point is that you must have the will to achieve success. Ninety percent of the failures that occur are due to the fact that there is no strong will involved. Many people simply say that they want something, but they do not make any (3)(endeavor) to achieve it. So, instead of getting it, they use the poorest excuse to explain the situation away. On many occasions, people tend to (4)(bypass)every minute obstacle, making the objective impossible to attain. In reality, if they have the will tosucceed, they can get rid of the (5)(handicaps) and achieve their goals. Only those with a(n) (6)(committed) and focused will and spirit can fight their way to final victory. Many a famous man has the same experience. They have (7)(attained)their prestige because they have had the will to (8)(transcend)apparently insuperable (无法克服的) obstacles. Many artists, statesmen, writers and inventors have managed to succeed because they possess a fierce will, which has helped them to accomplish major (9)(feats). Therefore, we can see that the main thing which one needs is a strong will. Weak-willed people never climb to the top. They collapse at the (10)(slightest) use of force against them. Strong-willed people, on the other hand, will stand up against all odds and will make it a point to succeed. Social anxiety symptoms often begin during adolescence. It's a developmental process that is (1)(characterized)by profound psychological changes, especially in terms of how we relate to others. One of the most frustrating (2)(aspects) of the adolescent years is the tendency for self-focus and a decrease in the (3)(amount)of focus we have for the feelings and needs of others. While these changes are fairly universal, those of us who were born with a shy temperament (性格) can carry the adolescent fears, which may never (4)(recede) , into adulthood. An anxious temperament causes our brains to react forcibly when (5)(exposed)to the stress of sudden awareness of our peers and gradually we become more and more vulnerable. Our brains label the fear of exposureor embarrassment as highly dangerous. This may result in a(n)(6)(vicious)circle for many years: excessive self-consciousness and inhibition when you feel you are being observed. To cope with the problem, I would like to (7)(challenge)you to strive for increased focus on other people, in place of your (8)(excessive)focus on yourself. Yes, I know, this is easier said than done. The fear may cause you to feel that you will lose control or make a fool of yourself when you are in the spotlight (聚光灯). But if you begin to build a new response, in (9)(reaction) to your fears, you will gradually build up a stronger and more positive response. Remember, don't let self-consciousness (10)(paralyze)you! Be courageous!Unit 3Audrey Hepburn was a beautiful actress and model, who became one of the most successful and well-known actresses in the film (1)(domain).She was a fashion icon and role model for women all over the world, helping to (2)(define) a particular type of fresh, vulnerable, elfin (小精灵似的) beauty. Today's (3)(popularity)of the slim fashion model is due to Audrey Hepburn's influence. Although she appeared frail (脆弱的), she was (4)(mentally) strong. At the end of her acting career when she entered a(n) (5)(diplomatic)career as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF, she was so solidly (6)(committed)to her cause that she was held in highest esteem (尊重) by even the most hardenedpoliticians.Audrey originally started working for UNICEF in 1954, doing radio presentations. She always said it was happy to (7)(devote)her life to helping impoverished (穷困的) children after her own good fortune in (8)(surviving) the hardship of the Nazi occupation of Holland. She began her permanent ambassadorship in 1988 and (9)(embarked)on trips to many countries. She was always positive: "People in these places don't know Audrey Hepburn, but they recognize the name UNICEF. When they see UNICEF their faces light up, because they know that something is happening." In 1992, her (10)(humanitarian) work with those in need was recognized when she was awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for her contribution to humanity.Unit 4"Why would you leave behind your comfortable bed, your home, your family and friends? Why do you want to go alone?" When you are living out of a backpack for a period of time, you may often get questioned why. I seldom get time to sit down and (1)(contemplate)the reason I travel, but I believe that you only begin to truly live once you step outside of your (2)(comfort) zone.My first overseas trip was at 14 years old, which (3)(sparked)my curiosity for the world. Since finishing high school I have (4)(ventured)through various countries and been amazed by all the (5)(diverse)cultures scattered around the globe. My eyes are mygreatest asset as they have (6)(witnessed)the most beautiful scenes that replay in my mind every day: (7)(stunning) landscapes, friendly locals, breath-taking architecture, and food that makes your mouth water once your eyes catch a(n) (8)(glimpse). Traveling teaches you to be independent in the most (9)(positive) way. I know how to depend on myself, go out and meet people, and not let anyone else's expectations (10)(dictate) my life. Every day I see my dream and every day it's in a new place. I am 22 years young. I quite agree with Anthony Bourdain, "If you're 22, physically fit, hungry to learn and be better, I urge you to travel. Find out how other people live and eat and cook. Learn from them, wherever you go."Unit 5In a study conducted in the UK, it was found that only four out of every five (1)(employees)were happy at work. Surprisingly, contrary to popular (2)(notion), friendly, supportive colleagues and a good manager, instead of the salary or the love for the work, have been found to be the (3)(primary)causes of happiness at work. So, how do you keep your spirits up and, at the same time, (4)(foster) a sense of joy on the job? Here is one of the tips to help you on your way to finding happiness and complete job satisfaction in the workplace.Start with a positive outlook. Happiness is a state of mind; it (5)(reflects)an attitude, though not many people realize it. Staying happy at work is totally based on your (6)(motivations)and on a positiveoutlook toward your job, not on (7)(monetary)rewards or material gain. Dwelling on (老是想着) the good (8)(aspects)of the work rather than rattling on and on (对...喋喋不休) about what makes you unhappy is the basic key to happiness. Negativity and (9)(gossiping)about bad things may be easy, but it is looking at the bright side that makes for the challenging part of a job. As Francesca Reigler puts it, "Happiness is an attitude. We either make ourselves (10)(miserable), or happy and strong. The amount of work is the same."阅读理解Unit 1 –Unit 5 Text B 其中一篇翻译Unit 1英译汉Global citizen is someone who identifies with being part of an emerging world community and whose actions contribute to building this community's values and practices.世界公民是指一个人承认自己是新兴的全球社区的一分子,而且其行动对全球社区的价值打造和实践活动有所贡献。
