2020年高考英语押题卷 浙江卷(二)

2020年高考英语押题卷浙江卷(二)1、When you hear the word "birthmark," you probably think of one of those black or brown spots that you have on your body. For me, it’s different — I have them on my lips and inside my mouth. Pm used to being asked, "What are those black marks on your lips?" When I tell people they’re birthmarks, they usually say, "That’s strange.” I used to consider them ugly. However, my mom calls them beauty marks. In pictures, I used to hide my birthmarks by pursing(噘起) my lips so I wouldn’t have to deal with people’s questions. As I was growing up, people wore me out with them. Some people would ask me the same questions even before knowing my name. In society I feel like we judge people by their looks before their personality. My birthmarks are caused by a genetic(基因的) condition from my mom’s side of the family. My mom’s mom has birthmarks on her lips, and my mom’s uncle and my uncle have some on their bodies. Every year I plan to have a procedure to remove them. But when imagining the process, I always get nervous and give up.My cousin faces a similar challenge. She has a huge birthmark that takes up her whole arm. She’s never tried to hide it or change her appearance. Once, her grandmother told her that the birthmark looked extremely prominent and suggested that she should wear long sleeves more often. If my cousin had actually taken that suggestion, she wouldn’t be such a person as she is.Inspired by my cousin, I am finally accepting who I am and now I don’t hesitate when someo ne asks me about them either. I say, "They’re beauty marks" and smile without pursing my lips.1.How did the author feel when asked about the birthmarks?A.She felt excited to show her difference.B.She felt annoyed to give others an answer.C.She was scared to be made fun of by people.D.She was bored to be faced with the question.2.What can be inferred about the authors cousin?A.She dislikes talking about her birthmark.B.She never judges others by their looks.C.She is more confident than the author.D.She has taken her grandma's suggestion.3.What does the underlined word "prominent" in paragraph 4 mean?A.Brilliant.B.Apparent.C.Harmful.D.Impressive.2、Kim Stemple found herself in a Boston hospital being treated for one of several diseases she had been identified with. The normally high-spirited Stemple was naturally getting very depressed. And then a friend who had just finished a half marathon gave her a medal and hoped it would give a positive message. Before she got too sick to exercise, Stemple had been a marathon runner, an experience she’d always miss. After Stemple hung the medal above her hospital bed, other patients said they wanted medals too. That got Stemple thinking, "A medal can act as a kind of pick-me-up." And so was born her charity, We Finish Together, which gathers medals from strangers in different fields 一runners, dancers, swimmers, and even spelling bee winners — and donates them to sorts of people in need. Receivers have included hospital patients and residents of homeless shelters. Part of the process involves the donor writing a personalized note. "This gives them a connection to someone," says Stemple. Can a simple medal really make a difference? "Yes," says Joan Musarra. "I opened my package containing a new medal and a note of positive, warm thoughts. I was amazed," she wrote to Stemple. "At that moment, I was sitting on my couch breathing through an oxygen cannula(插管). It seemed that someone was holding my hand.""I had the privilege of meeting Kim when in Washington D. C. for the Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon. We chatted about life, sharing stories and of course we talked about her organization," says Keri, a runner. "Kim talks little about herself and doesn’t want the organization or stories to be about her, but rather, about all the wonderful people involved.”1.What is the purpose of We Finish Together?A.To raise money for those in need.B.To catch attention to helpless patients.C.To lift up people in poor conditions.D.To collect medals from different fields.2.What does the medal mean to Musarra?A.It encourages her to forget pain.B.It brings her support and love.C.It allows her to make more friends.D.It helps her make a big change.3.Which of the following best describes Stemple?A.Caring and courageous.B.Dependable and determined.C.Helpful and modest.D.Selfless and strong.3、People are being tricked into Facebook with the promise of a fun, free service without realizing they’re paying for it by giving up loads of personal information. Most Faceboo k users don’t realize this is happening.

1. Jules is now in his sixties, and is one of the many homeless people who live on the streets; he buys a newspaper most days. Today, with his fellow tramps, he reads about yesterday's student demonstrations.Like many of the tramps who live under the bridges, Jules was not always so poor. A long time ago he was in the Navy, and like many who have been to sea for a long time, he has stayed slim and fit. Despite the strict organization on board ship, he loved his life, and had the opportunity to see many countries. He visited Poland and Russia; in South Africa he realized what he valued in each country was the people he met. He was always astonished and delighted by the ways in which the people he met differed from one country to another. Some day, he hopes, everyone will see the world as he does. After many happy years in the Navy, he had to retire. The good things in life always come to an end. His mother and father had long since died and he'd lost touch with his other relatives. He became an industrial designer. He was happy, although it wasn't the sameas the sea. He never wanted to get married and have children. And then there was the period of darkness. He smiles sadly. He shrugs his shoulders and looks at his hands. There are tears in the corners of his eyes. This is something thathe cannot bring himself to talk about. "It all went wrong, " he whispers. He was silent for a while, then recovered. He began to talk more loudly."Look at me now﹣﹣it makes me angry. And what about the President? He's been in power for years, and look what he's done for us. Nothing! I am still out on the streets and live the lifeof a dog."(1)What can we learn about Jules' life in the Navy?________A He only visited three countries.B He enjoyed the life on board ship.C He was very well paid for the job he did.D He liked meeting people from different countries..(2)Why did Jules change his job according to the passage?________A He wanted to start a family.B He wanted to be near his relatives.C He didn't enjoy the work any more.D He was too old to stay in the Navy..(3)What is Jules's opinion of the President?________A The President should increase pensions for old people.B The President had nothad enough time to change things. C The President should have done more to help people like him. D The President should not allow homeless people to stay on the streets.2. If you cut in line, you might just be a bad person. The queue is a regulation where the reward (the ice﹣cream stand/dining room/ticket booth) is earned through patience. Your choice to avoid this time﹣honored process will be bound to draw the anger of those you pass by, drawing remarks like "Whoa there, Chief, " the passive﹣aggressive "There's a line, you know!" and of course, the incredibly common "Hey, Copernicus, whydon't you guide yourself to the back of the line? "But, in the moment in which you really cannot wait, for example, the entire royal family has prepared a dinner party upon you last minute, then there is a way to cut the line correctly. There are a few different ways to consider and a few different methods to employ. The regularity of the situation is very important. If you're waiting to use the photocopier at work, you might be more likely to manage a successful cut than if you were waiting for a lifeboat on the Titanic. Sure, that might be an extreme example. But the importance of the event does matter. For those requests in normal situations, emphasizing either the urgency of your task or the simplicity of your task proved to be effective: experimenters who said "Excuse me, I have five pages. May I use the photocopier? " had a cut rate of 60 percent and experimenters who said "May I use the photocopier because I need to make copies? " saw a success rate of 90 per cent when queuing for the copy machine. If you have a couple of extra dollars lying around, bribing members of the line also proved to be effective. And most of the time, the person being bribed didn't end up accepting the money, because even the offer showed that the briber had a sense of desperation.(1)Why does the author use the remarks about Chief and Copernicus in paragraph 1?________A To illustrate the reaction from members in line.B To encourage those who want to cut in line.C To praise the behavior of cutting in line.D To provide advice which helps cut in line..(2)Which of the following is not a wise way to cut in line?________A Giving the members in line money.B Stating the emergency of theevent. C Considering the regularity of the situation. D Defending the right of cutting in line..(3)What is the best title for the text?________A Be Patient When Queuing.B Acceptable Ways to Cut in Line.C Time and Tides Waits for No Man.D Special Rights under Emergency.3. Summer is here, and with it comes a chance you'll get too much sun. While there's no cure for sunburn, a small but fascinating new study suggests taking large amounts of vitamin D after exposure may prevent the associated redness and inflammation (发炎). In the paper, researchers exposed 20 volunteers to a light resembling solar radiation to induce a sunburn on a small piece of skin. They then gave the "burn victims" large amounts of vitamin D, and followed up with participants one, two and three days (and a week)later to measure skin redness and thickness. The researchers found that vitamin D decreased inflammation and redness, compared with taking a placebo(安慰剂). And this effect increased in proportion to how much was consumed. Vitamin D also appears to increase the activity of a gene called arginase﹣1, which is involved in tissue repair and healing. Taking 50, 000 international units (IU) of vitamin D﹣﹣125 times the recommended daily allowance﹣led to a significant reduction in redness andinflammation, compared with the placebo. Those who took 100, 000 IU had even less redness and pain; and those who took 200, 000 IU had the greatest reduction in inflammation. This is the first study to show vitamin D can reduce inflammation, and suggests that it "could potentially help prevent sunburn, " says senior author Kurt Lu, a physician scientist and assistant professor at Case Western Reserve University. It used to be thought vitamin D was primarily involved in building healthy bones and muscles, but recent research has found it has many more roles, including influencing inflammation, such as the kind associated with sunburns. So, if you get burned, should you take a lot of vitamin D? The study authors don't recommend it. "I think that's probably not a good idea and not well established by this study, " says Barbara Gilchrest, a physician scientist at Massachusetts General Hospital. Such large amounts, if taken repeatedly, have the potential to cause vitamin D toxicity(毒性).(1)What does this passage mainly talk about?________A An unusual method for relieving sunburn.B Tips for how to travel safely in summer.C A suggestion on taking vitaminD properly. D Advice on how to take medicine effectively..(2)How do the researchers confirm the healing effect of taking vitamin D?________A By observing the inflammation of skin every day.B By measuring the thickness of skin after a week.C By increasing the daily volume of vitaminD By comparing the effect with that of placebo..(3)Figures are used in paragraph 2 in order to________.A recommend the daily intakeB argue against the benefits of more VitaminD C show the more Vitamin D, the greater benefits D(4)What can be inferred about the function of vitamin D?________A Repeatedly taking large amounts of Vitamin D is beneficial.B Vitamin D may bring more advantages to us than what has been found out.C Don't take vitaminD unless your doctor approves you to do it. D Vitamin D is more useful for curing sunburn than building healthy bones.第二节(共1小题;每小题10分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.4. It is amusing that yogurt, which was invented to make milk last longer before the days of refrigeration, now makes grocery shopping last longer. Full﹣fat, or nonfat? Greek,or regular?(1)_______A key recommendation when it comes to fat is to choose low﹣fat or fat﹣freeyogurt. That's because dairy fat is mostly saturated (饱和的), the type linked with increased risk of heart disease. Besides, full﹣fat dairy has more calories than nonfat. This view, however, has been challenged by a few recent studies. Researchers think that full﹣fat dairy might offer some as﹣yet﹣unknown health benefits. It might also help with weight management because the fat in it makes it more satisfying, helping keep our appetite in check.(2)_______ Until there are further findings, it might be wiser to choose low﹣fat or fat﹣free yogurt and add healthy fat by topping it with nuts.(3)_______ Many of them also have a hard time deciding whether to buy Greek yogurt or regular yogurt. Greek yogurt, which was rare about a decade ago, dominates the store shelves with dozens of flavors today. It has become popular partly because it features a thick, creamy texture (口感) and contains more protein and less sugar than regular yogurt.Greek yogurt has these qualities because of its unique liquid﹣removingprocess. Unfortunately, lots of nutrients, including calcium (钙), are sometimes drained, too. Therefore, thickened yogurt and regular yogurt offer different nutritional benefits.(4)_______Finally, it is worth mentioning that it's the added sugar, not the naturally﹣ occurring sugar (which is removed in Greek yogurt), that should be the cause of our concern. Fruit﹣flavored yogurts that appear to be healthy may have little actual fruit and plenty of added sugar instead.(5)_______A. Consumers, however, are not confused only about fat.B. Mixing them up and enjoying both might be a good idea.C. With so many conflicting headlines about fat these days, it's no wonder people are confused when buying dairy products.D. Our best bet might be to buy plain yogurt and sweeten it ourselves using fresh fruit.E. There are so many choices that we often find it hard to decide which yogurt to buy.F. They're naturally "packaged" with so many important nutrients that it would be misguided to avoid them.G. Yet more research needs to be done for us to fully understand dairy fat's health impact.第三部分:语言运用(共两节,满分30分)第一节:完形填空(共1小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)阅读下面材料,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项.5. "I decided to change the way he looked at numbers," she said. "An abacus is a tried and tested method, and the Egyptians used them for building the pyramid." Her company produces over 1,500 bricks a day.The pavers are made using a mix of plastic products that cannot be reprocessed or recycled. The collected plastic is mixed with sand, heated at very high temperatures, and compressed (压缩)into bricks that vary in color and thickness. The resulting product is stronger, lighter, and about 30 percent cheaper than concrete bricks.More importantly,it helps repurpose the lowest quality of plastic. "There is that waste they cannot process anymore;they cannot recycle. That is what we get." Matee says. Matee is not nearly done. Her dream is to reduce the mountain of trash to just a hill by increasing production and expanding her offerings. She says,"The more we recycle the plastic, the more we produce affordable housing, the more we created more employment for the youth."8. Makosinski explained. At 12th grade,Makosinski then went on to create the e-Drink.It is a coffee cup that harvests the extra heat of a hot drink while it cools, stores it as electricity in an intemal(内置的)battery and makes it available to charge an external device such as a phone, whose life can now be longer by approximately 10 to 30 minutes."My favorite part of creating inventions would be when you had the idea and you have to physically build it,and it doesn't work out," she said."So you have to figure out different ways to solve it. A lot of times,I'll give up and I'll come back after a couple of days and I'll take it up again."Her advice to other student innovators"Start now. There's nothing holding you back.Actually, you can do whatever you want." Makosinski said,"If you want to make something, follow your heart, then go ahead. If there's something you really want to do,you will make time for it and you will find time in the day to do your schoolwork."4.Makosinsky created the powerless flashlight mainly to ______A. satisfy her desire to create inventionsB. settle problems in study for her friendC. help those who are short of electricityD. finish the assignment of a science project5.Which of the following is mainly explained in paragraph 4?______A. 新高考英语模拟导航卷(浙江卷) 第二卷 1、 Dear Editors of Macquarie Dictionary, My name is Wendy,a second generation Chinese-Australian migrant( 移民 ) and a mother of two young children. I ' m writing to express my disappointment in one of Macquarie Dictionary's entries, namely the definition of the word "monolid". In both the paper version (7th edition) and online version of the Dictionary, Macquarie defines "monolid" as:"An upper eyelid without a fold, perceived by some in Asia to give an appearance of laziness." This definition has disturbed me and many Asians living in Australia. Linguistically( 从 语言学角度讲 ),the term "monolid" is a pretty unbiased description of a physical

characteristic that involves no feelings, common to over 50% of people of East Asian origin. It fferent to other terms describing a physical feature including "blonde" or "freckle". Take a minute and consider this. Would it be appropriate if the definition of "blonde" became "having fair or light-coloured hair, thought by some in Western countries as possessing little or no intelligence"? Or would it be appropriate if the definition of "freckle" was "a small brownish spot in the skin or face, thought by some as creating an ugly appearance"? In addition, it is also inappropriate that Macquarie Dictionary 一 a dictionary of choice by many Australian schools — defines a term in a way which may create negative racial connection for Australian children of East Asian origin. Both my kids are horn with monolids, a constant reminder of their cultural background. It therefore breaks my heart to imagine a scene where they turn to the dictionary to find that their physical feature is associated with "laziness". What if they get teased by their school friends that they are born "lazy"? What if my sensitive older son starts hating himself and his race classification for being associated with something negative? For the reasons above, I urge Macquarie Dictionary to adjust the current definition of

I remember one night after a long, hard day at work, my mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage, and a plate of extremely burnt biscuits on the table. I waited to see if my dad would get annoyed. All my dad did was to reach for the biscuits, smile at my mom and ask me how my day at school had been. I don't remember what I told him that night but I do remember watching him add butter and jelly on that ugly burnt biscuit and ate every bite of that thing. He never made a face nor uttered a word about it!When I rose from the table that evening, I remember hearing my mom apologize to my dad for overcooking the biscuits and I will never forget what he said, “Honey, I love burnt biscuits every now and then."Later that night, I went to say good night to my daddy, and I wondered if he really liked his biscuits burnt. He wrapped me up in his arms and said gently, "Your mom put in a hard day at work today and she is really tired. Besides, a little burnt biscuit never hurt anyone! As I have grown older, I've thought about that many times. Life is full of imperfect things and imperfect people. Learning to accept each other's faults and choosing to celebrate each other's differences contribute to a healthy, growing, and lasting relationship. We could extend this philosophy to any relationship, such as a husband-wife, parent-child, or friendship. Don't put the key to your happiness in someone else's pocket. Keep it in your own. Entertainment and sports.CEvery day, millions of shoppers hit the stores in full force, searching wildly for the perfect gift.Aside from purchasing holiday gifts, most people regularly buy presents for other occasions throughout the year, including weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, and graduations. This frequent experience of gift-giving cancause uncertain feelings in gift-givers. Many enjoy the opportunity to buy presents because gift-giving offers a powerful means to build stronger bonds, while many worry that their purchases will disappoint rather than delight the intended recipients (接受者).Anthropologists describe gift-giving as a positive social process, serving various political, religious, and psychological functions. Economists, however, offer a less favorable view. According to Waldfogel, gift-giving represents an objective wasteof resources. People buy gifts that recipients would not choose to buy on their own, or at least not spend as much money to purchase (a phenomenon referred to as‘‘the deadweight loss of Christmas”).What is surprising is that gift-givers have much experience acting as both gift-givers and gift-recipients, but nevertheless tend to overspend each time they set out to purchase a meaningful gift. In the present research, we propose a unique psychological explanation for this overspending problem — gift-givers link how much they spend with how much recipients will appreciate the gift. Though it seems natural to gift-givers, such an assumption may be unfounded. Indeed, we propose that gift-recipients will be less likely to base their feelings of appreciation on the value of a gift than givers assume. Why do gift-givers assume that gift price is closely linked to gift-recipients’ feelings of appreciation? Perhaps givers believe that more expensive gifts communicate a stronger sense ofthoughtfulness and consideration. According to Camerer and others, gift-giving represents a symbolic ritual (习俗), by which gift-givers attempt to signal their positive attitudes towards the recipient and their willingness to invest resources in a futurerelationship. In this sense, gift-givers may be motivated to spend more money on a gift in order to send a “stronger signal”. Asfor gift-recipients, they may not interpret smaller and larger gifts as representing smaller and larger signals of thoughtfulness and consideration. The idea of gift-givers and gift-recipients being unable to account for the other party’s viewpoint seems confusing because people slip in and out of these roles every day. Yet, despite the experience as both givers and receivers, people often struggle to apply information gained from one role in another. In theoretical terms, people fail to use information about their own preferences and experiences to produce more efficient outcomes in their exchange relations. In practical terms, people spend hundreds of dollars each year on gifts, but somehow never learn to estimate their gift expense according to personal insight.8. The author uses “the deadweight loss of Christmas” in Paragraph 2 to express ________.A. gift-givers don’t spend much money during holidaysB. gift-givers don’t ask recipients what gifts they preferC. gift-givers buy improper and expensive giftsD. gift-givers have difficulty in choosing gifts9. According to the passage, people buy gifts to ________.A. receive gifts in returnB. enjoy the feeling of shoppingC. help recipients to save moneyD. better relationships with recipients10. What can we learn from the passage?A. People’s high living standards require expensive gifts.B. Gift-givers buy gifts based on their experiences as recipients.C. Anthropologists think gift-giving meets different human needs.D. Recipients judge the depth of friendship according to the gift price.11. Why did the author write this article?A. To criticize people’s gift-buying habits.B. To analyze people’s gift-giving behaviors.C. To offer advice on how to improve relationships.D. To remind people not to overlook others’ preferences.DScientists have recently discovered thatAndean condors (秀鹫)— some of the world’s largest birds——barelyflap their wings at all while flying. Instead, they use rising air currents to remain in the air for hours. The Andean condor is the world’s largest soaring bird. They can weigh up to 15 kilograms. Their wings, when spread out, measure up to three meters. Their main food source is the meat of large animals which have died. Soaring high in the sky allows condors to easily spot possible meals on the ground.Scientists worked together to study the flight patterns of these huge birds and how much effort the birds use when flying. To study the birds while they were in the sky, the researchers attached special devices which could record every beat of their wings. The scientists learned that most of the condors’ flapping— over 75%— came when the birds were taking off. Once in the sky, the birds flew for very long periods of time without flapping at all. In fact, they only flapped their wings for 1% of the time they were in the air. One bird flew for over five hours without flapping, covering nearly 117miles.Soaring without flapping is important because birds bum energy every time they flap their wings. The birds’ soaring isn’t magic. They use the fact that hot air rises to keep themselves up. As hot air rises, it often creates “thermals”— currents of warm air moving upward. The condors soar by making use of these thermals. The tricky part is finding thermals and moving between them. When birds are forced to land and take off again often, it costs them a lot of energy. The researchers learned that to avoid having to land, the condors did most of their non-take-off flapping when they were closer to the ground and looking for a new thermal. The scientists reported that even though all of the condors they studied were young, they knew well how to take advantage of the air currents.12. What can we learn about the Andean condor from the text?A. They live mairly on small animals.B. Their wingspan is at least three meters.C. They rely on hot air to remain high in the sky.D. They are the birds with the strongest flying ability.13. Why was the equipment tied to the birds?A. To measure how far they could fly without flapping.B. To keep track of how often they flapped while flying.C. To calculate the energy required for their flight.D. To confirm their flight patterns.14. Which of the following acts consumes the most energy for a condor?A. Hunting for food.B. Flying in the sky.C. Getting off the ground.D. Landing on the ground.15. What can we infer from the text?A. Condors flap the most when looking for a new thermal.B. No condor can fly for more than five hours without flapping.C. Condors don’t need to look for thermals when soaring in the sky.D. Soaring by using thermals is probably a natural ability of condors.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

2020年浙江省高考英语模拟试卷(自主选拔)(有答案解析)

2020年浙江省高考英语模拟试卷(自主选拔)一、阅读理解(本大题共15小题,共30.0分)AIn this age of Internet chat, videogames and reality television, there is no shortage of mindless activities to keep a child occupied.Yet,despite the competition,my -year-old daughter Rebecca wants to spend her leisure time writing short stories. She wants to enter one of her stories into a writing contest,a competition she won last year.As a writer I know about winning contests, and about losing them.I know what it is like to work hard on a story only to receive a rejection slip from the publisher.I also know the pressures of trying to live up to a reputation created by previous victories. What if she doesn't win the contest again ?That's the strange thing about being a parent. So many of our own past scars and dashed hopes can surface.A revelation(启示)came last week when I asked her," Don't you want to win again ?" No," she replied," I just want to tell the story of an angel going to first grade."I had just spent weeks correcting her stories as she spontaneously(自发地)told them.Telling myself that I was merely an experienced writer guiding the young writer across the hall,I offered suggestions for characters, conflicts and endings for her tales. The story about a fearful angel starting first grade was quickly "guided" by me into the tale of a little girl with a wild imagination taking her first music lesson.I had turned her contest into my contest without even realizing it.Staying back and giving kids space to grow is not as easy as it looks.Because I know very little about farm animals who use tools or angels who go to first grade,I had to accept the fact that I was co-opting(借用)my daughter's experience. While stepping back was difficult for me,it was certainly a good first step that I will quickly follow with more steps, putting myself far enough a way to give her room but close enough to help if asked. All the while I will be reminding myself that children need room to experiment, grow and find their own voices.1.What do we learn from the first paragraph?______A. A lot of distractions compete for children's time nowadays.B. Children do find lots of fun in many mindless activities.C. Rebecca is much too occupied to enjoy her leisure time.D. Rebecca draws on a lot of online materials for her writing.2.What did the author say about her own writing experience?______A. She was constantly under pressure of writing more.B. Most of her stories had been rejected by publishers.C. She did not quite live up to her reputation as a writer.D. She believed she possessed real talent for writing.BSeveral months ago I decided it would be wise to investigate the possibilities of buying a life insurance policy,if for no other reason than because I understood it might be a good investment.I got the name of an insurance agent from a friend and called the agent to get some information. From the kinds of questions I put to him,the agent would tell that I knew nothing about insurance so he kindly offered to explore the matter with me in more detail.-to help me determine the kind of policy I ought to be considering. That evening he appeared at my door promptly at 7:30;without wasting time on amenities he spread his papers out on the kitchen table and launched into a lengthy explanation.I listened attentively as he talked about the difference between various types of policies, and he explained the kind of coverage he felt I ought to have because of my age bracket and financial objectives.Toward the end of the evening (after three or four hours of talking),he kindly helped me fill out an application for a 50,000 dollar policy, and then he asked if I could go to a Dr.Luther's office on Friday for a physical examination.I don't know why,but it was not until the mention of the doctor's appointment that I realized fully what was happening.I was about to sign a lifetime contract yet I had not really made a decision about whether I wanted to buy the policy or not.As a matter of fact, the question of the need for a decision from me one way or the other had not even come up.Suddenly I felt sure that I definitely did not want to buy the policy. However, since he had spent so much time with me,I didn't want to make him feel that he had wasted his time.So I invented an excuse about things I had to do on Friday, and I assured him I would call him in a few days.Actually,I had no intention of going to see Dr.Luther or of calling the agent again.I wanted to forget the whole thing. It's been over three months now since our meeting, and my friendly insurance agent still calls at my office faithfully two or three times a week.My secretary knows that I don't want to talk to him,so when he calls she tells him that I'm in a meeting or that I'm out of the office or that I'm away on a business trip.I realize now that it was a mistake not to tell him outright that I'm not interested, and please not to bother me any more, all I can do is to avoid his calls and hope I don't run into him someplace.4.The writer phoned the insurance agent because ______ .A. He wanted to fill out an application for a life insurance policy.B. He had decided to buy a life insurance policy.C. He wanted to explore the possibilities of buying a life insurance policy.D. He took great interest in the insurance company.5.According to the passage, the agent was ______ .A. an experienced salesmanB. kind but inexperiencedC. ineffectiveD. easy to deal with6.The writer didn't tell the agent the truth because ______ .A. he was afraid of him.B. he felt embarrassed to do so.C. he thought it none of the agent's business.D. he didn't wish to lose the agents friendship.7.The writer realizes that ______ .A. he should have told the truth to the agent earlier.B. he should buy the policy.C. the agent is a real friend.D. insurance is but swindle(骗局)CThe letter arrives from a school that your son told you is his dream school. You dare not open it,instead, you hand it to him when he arrives home from school. You watch as his eyes light up and you know this is the beginning of something. You are just not sure what.Your son insists that the coach must really want him since he took the time to write him a letter. Is this in fact true?Did he write other kids and if so how many? How would you know? The simple fact of the matter is that you can read very little into that first letter.Coaches cast a wide net in the first few stages of the recruiting(录取)cycle. That letter may in fact,be the first and last time your son ever hears from that particular coach.Think about it:if he has not seen your sons transcripts or his standardized test scores,if you have not visited the school,if he has no knowledge of your financial needs, can it be anything significant? So how do you treat these letters or emails? Is there some format you can apply?Say tor instance, three letters mean real interest…or three letters and a call means a greater degree of interest? My experience in deal with cases of various applications is that answers will not come automatically.Call the coach and find out how real the interest in fact is."Is my son a top recruit in your mind?" "How many players at his position will you be recruiting this year?" By asking these simple and direct questions, you as a parent, will have established a dialogue and hopefully figured out how much interest,if any really exists. However, here comes the challenge.Applicants and parents are vague with coaches about their intention and level of interest all the time.In fact, the coach's situation is no less confusing than yours. He is fighting a similar battle on multiple choices. There is little clarity on either end.Enjoy that first letter.Let's hope it is one of many and let's hope you apply a bit of realism with a bit of wishful thinking about how happy your son should be when this is all over.8.How did the parent feel about the letter that his son got from his dreamed school?______A. expectantB. hesitantC. doubtfulD. hopeful9.According to the parents how to react to the first letter from coachesC. advise parents to ignore the first letter from coachesD. warn parents to be realistic towards the first letter from coachesDSince we are social beings, the quality of our lives depends in large measure on our interpersonal relationships. One strength of the human condition is our tendency to give and receive support from one another under stressful circumstances.Social support consists of the exchange of resources among people based on theirinterpersonal ties. Those of us with strong support systems appear better able to deal with major life changes and daily difficulties.People with strong social ties live longer and have better health than those without such ties.Studies over a range of illnesses, from depression to heart disease, show that the presence of social support helps people protect themselves from illness, and the absence of such support makes poor health more likely.Social support cushions stress in a number of ways.First, friends, relatives, and co-workers may let us know that they value us.Our self-respect is strengthened when we feel accepted by others despite our faults and difficulties.Second, other people often provide us with informational support. They help us to explain and understand our problems and find solutions to them.Third,we typically find social companionship supportive.Engaging in leisure-time activities with others helps us to meet our social needs while at the same time distracting(转移……注意力)us from our worries and troubles. Finally, other people may give us instrumental support-financial aid, material resources, and needed services-that reduces stress by helping us solve and deal with our problems.12.Research shows that people's physical and mental health has much to 2. I can proudly say that last year I broke the record for the oldest person in the world to ride a roller﹣coaster. I’m 105, but I feel younger. Even the doctor agrees I’m in good condition. I’m a bit deaf and my legs feel weak, but they are the only issue. I rode the Twistosaurus at Flamingo Land, which spins you round quite fast. I didn’t choose to go on that. I’d have preferred a really fast one that went upside down. But I was told I couldn’t ride something like that, because my blood pressure could drop and I might have some danger. I wasn’t nervous ﹣ I don’t get frightened of anything. I was securely fastened, so I knew I wouldn’t fall out. The roller﹣coaster ride went on for three or four minutes, and it couldn’t be a better experience. And I raised a lot of money for the Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance fund, which was fantastic.
