CHICAGO, May 12(Reuters)—Quest Diagnostics Inc(DGX.N)has developed the first commercially available test to identify U.S. patients infected with the new H1N1 flu virus, the medical testing provider said on Tuesday. Quest said its Focus Diagnostics infectious disease reference laboratory validated the test using specimens confirmed as positive for the new virus by public health authorities. The test does not need to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the company said. The virus, commonly referred to as swine flu, is a subtype of Influenza virus Type A.The Focus Diagnostics test detects the presence of Influenza A virus' RNA and specifically identifies the presence of the novel H1N1 virus, Quest said.
The test can detect the presence of a virus' RNA from a patient's nasal or nasopharyngeal specimen. Quest said Focus Diagnostics will perform the new test at its reference laboratory in Cypress, California.“The public health laboratories don't have the capacity to do all the testing that is being requested. Now, clinicians and hospitals have another way to potentially identify this novel virus from patients by sending tests to us,” said Dr. Jay Lieberman, medical director of Focus Diagnostics.“We are very confident that the test will accurately identify this novel H1N1
strain,” Lieberman told Reuters. The tests, which list for $300, can be ordered directly from Focus Diagnostics or through the Quest Diagnostics national laboratory network, Quest said. The Focus Diagnosics laboratory is expected to report back on the test results within 24 hours of receiving a specimen. Quest said it also would submit positive specimens and test results to the appropriate public health authorities, as required by local public health guidelines.

Self-esteem(自尊心)is all about how much we feel valued, accepted, and thought well of by others—and how much we value, love, and accept ourselves.People with healthy self-esteem are able to feel good about themselves, appreciate their own worth, and take pride in their abilities, skills, and accomplishments. They do better academically and find it easier to make friends. They tend to have better relationships with others, feel happier, find it easier to deal with mistakes and failures and are more likely to stick with something until they succeed. Those with low self-esteem may feel as if no one will like them or accept them or that they can't do well in anything.
Here are some steps that may help improve your self-esteem:
Try to stop thinking about negative thoughts about yourself. If you're used to focusing on your shortcomings, start thinking about positive aspects of yourself that outweigh them. Each day, write down three things about yourself that make you happy. It is good to aim high, but your goals should be within reach. That's why you should set practical goals and never expect the impossible.Mistakes are part of learning,so view mistakes as learning opportunities.Accept that you will make mistakes because everyone does. Also, you should recognize what you can change and what you can't.If you realize that you're unhappy with something about yourself that you can change, then start today. If it's something you can't change(like your height),then start to work toward loving yourself the way you are.Feeling like you're making a difference and that your help is valued can do wonders to improve self-esteem. So don't hesitate to make a contribution.Help a
classmate who's having trouble, help clean up your campus,or volunteer your time in some other way.
Self-esteem plays a role in almost everything you do.It's never too late to build healthy, positive self-esteem.It takes some work, but healthy self-esteem is an asset you'll have for life.
45.What does the author mainly want to tell us in the passage?
A.Self-esteem plays an important role in life.
B.What self-esteem means.
C. How people can improve their self-esteem.
D.What people with healthy self-esteem are like.

根据第二段“Here are some steps that may help improve your self-esteem”可知作者旨在告诉我们如何培养健康、积极的自尊心。

46.The underlined word“them”in Paragraph 3 refers to ______.
A.negative thoughts B.your shortcomings
C.positive aspects D.your goals

A.Setting high goals.
B.Never forgiving yourself for your mistakes.
C.Changing all the things that make you upset.
D.Lending a hand to a classmate in trouble.

Alex Harley was born in the northeast of New York in 1921, but he spent most of his early life with his mother's family in Southern Tenesee. His grandmother told him stories about their family. Their history, she said, began with Toby. He was a slave from Africa and his name was Kintay.
Alex Harley went to school and then to college. In 1939, he joined the U. S. coastguard. As he was a black, his job was to wait on tables and washed dishes. In his spare time, he learned to write stories. He served in the coastguard for 20 years. After he retired he put all his time into writing.
Alex Harley remembered the stories his grandmother told him. He began to study his family story. After a lot of research, Harley decided that Toby probably was. Kinta Kinte for the West African Mandingo people. Kinta Kinte was caught near the village of Juffure on the Gambia River. He was sold as a slave in Annapolis, Maryland in 1767. Then Harley made a trip to Gambia and talked with a history expert in Juffure. The African historian made his conclusion stronger.
Alex Harley wanted to tell the experiences of the black people in 18th—and—19th century America. He spent 10 years researching and writing his family story for the book“Roots”. It was published in 1976. It won a special Pulitzer Prize. A few years later, a film series(系列性)based on Harley's book was shown on American television.
49.Choose the right order of the events given in the passage.
a.He made a trip to Cambia.
b.Alex Harley knew the stories about their family
c.Kintay lived near the Cambia River.
d.Harley retired from the U.S. coastguard.
e.Toby was sold as a slave.
f.He began to study his family history.
A.e, c, b, d, a, f B.c, e, b, d, f, a
C.e, b, c, a, f, d D.c, b, d, e, a, f

50.Where did Harley spend most of his childhood?
A.In Gambia
B.In the north of the U. S.
C.In Maryland
D.In the south of America.

51.Which conclusion did he draw after doing a lot of research?
A.Toby was a history expert.
B.Toby's hometown was near Cambia River.
C.Toby was an African historian.
D.Toby's hometown was Annapolis.

由文中第三段的“Harley decided that Toby probably was Kinta Kinte”可知。

Toby可能原名为Kinta Kinte,又根据下句“Kinta Kinte was caught near the village of Juffure on the Gambia River”可判断正确答案是B。

52.Which of the following might have happened after watching“Roots”on TV?
A.Every American talking about their family story.
B.None of the Americans talking about their family history.
C.Many Americans became interested in researching their family history.
D.Only the black people became interested in researching their family history.

D
Will there ever be another Einstein? This is the undercurrent of conversation at Einstein memorial meetings throughout the year. A new Einstein will appear, scientists say. But it may take a long time. After all, more than 200 years separated Einstein from Isaac Newton.
Many physicists say the next Einstein hasn't been born yet, or is baby now. That's because the search for a unified(综合的)theory that would explain all the forces of nature has pushed current mathematics to its limits. New math must be created before the problem can be solved.
But researchers say there are many other factors working against another Einstein appearing anytime soon. For one thing, physics is a much different field today. In Einstein's day, there were a few thousand physicists worldwide, and the theorists who could argue with Einstein probably would fit into a streetcar with seats to spare. Education is different, too. One key aspect of Einstein's training that is little noticed is the years of philosophy(哲学)he read as a teenager—Kant, Schopenhauer and Spinoza, among others. It taught him how to think independently about space and time and it wasn't long before he became a philosopher himself.
And Einstein was a clever musician. The interplay between music and math is well-known. Einstein would play his violin hard as a way to think through a knotty physics problem.
Today, universities have produced millions of physicists. There aren't many jobs in science for them, so they go to Wall Street and Silicon Valley to apply their analytical skills. Those who stay in science don't work alone and they sometimes do experiment together which takes years.
It's hard to imagine a renegade(背叛者)like Einstein standing it. “Maybe there is an Einstein out there today,”said Columbia University physicist Brian Greene, “but it would be a lot harder for him to be heard.”
53.According to the second paragraph, the next Einstein will________.
A.have to create new math
B.create a unified theory
C.have to be born now
D.push math to its limits

54.The underlined word“knotty”in the fourth paragraph means________.
A.easy B.interesting C.strange D.difficult

55.Which of the following will be useful for the next Einstein to be born?
A.There will be music around.
B.There will be no problems to solve.
C.There wil be suitable philosophy to study.
D.There are only a few physicists.

This week in our Foreign Student Series, we talk about getting an American education online.
A student named Hendra has written to us from Indonesia asking about a good online university. Finding the right online program requires research. Talking to advisers and recuriters(招募者)can help. Keep in mind, though, that they might have a financial interest to direct you to certain programs.
The Council on Higher Education Accreditation(CHEA)recognizes a group in Washington. D.C. to accredit(授权)schools that offer distance learning. One hundred and ten programs in the United States and six other countries are accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council.
We asked the executive director, Michael Lambert, for advice on choosing a distance learning program. He says the first thing is to go on the CHEA Web site to find if a school is accredited .The address is c-h-e-a dot o-r-g.
Next, make sure the school offers what you need. Do you need a degree, or will a certificate or license be enough?
Another consideration is cost. Often the published price does not include all the costs—like books.Technology requirements can also add to the costs. Will you need to get new software or a high-speed Internet connection even a new computer to take the classes you want?
Also, consider the level of interaction that an online program offers. You might never meet the teacher or other students in person.
Finally, and this is our own advice, find out what others say on the Internet for comments or news stories about schools that interest you. Just remember that what people say is not always fair or true.

答案:
76.much→more或much后加more由后面的than可知,此处用比较级。

78.is→are句子的主语是jobs。

79.down后加upon/on look down upon/on“看不起”。

80.As→With此处是with的复合结构;as需接句子。

81.That's→It's it指代后面的不定式,that无此用法。

83.the→a a number of“许多”;the number of“……的数目”。

84.allowing→allowed此处是被动语态,be allowed to“被允许”。

85.去掉it problem后省略了定语从句的引导词that,that做solve的宾语,it多余。

Dear teachers, families and graduates, welcome and thank you for joining us tonight at Xinhua High School graduation ceremony for the Class of 2010!
First, let me thank all our families and friends for their love and support on behalf of the graduates. I also want to thank our diligent teachers for guiding us through to this moment. My personal thanks to Mr Zheng, you got me through Math when I had given up hope.
Graduation is a time to go over enjoyable memories which have been made over the past three years. Many events become so vivid in my mind at this moment, military training, soccer and basketball games.
However, graduation is also a time to look forward to the future in front of us. No matter what you plan next, I hope you can go about it positively. Each of you will create your own unique path. Let's remember the saying “attitude determines altitude”. Please always keep a smile on your face.
Finally, best wishes to the Class of 2010. Thank you very much.。
