Summary
Cultural globalization brings new challenges to local cultures and values in Africa and other non-Western societies. The superiority of western ,since the age of imperialism and colonization,is enhanced by the structual change in the world economy ,which is commodity-oriented.There is good reason for concern about the rate at which non-Westernized cultures are being undermined in a world that is bound together by ever-stronger economic ties .The most far-reaching effect of cultural globalization, the commercialization of culture, destroys the traditional values and faiths, their identity and independence. The end result is global integration at the expense of local disintegration. A good case in point is African culture which has been destroyed by Western cultural colonialism,It has left the colonized in a state of cultural disorientation and consequently vulnerable to continuing cultural invasion. In this way,the hegemony of the West is reinforced.

Reading Skill Focus
The following tips are useful while skimming. 1. Read the title, subtitles and subheading to find out what the text is about. 2. Look at the illustrations to give you further information about the topic. 3. Read the first and last sentence of each paragraph. 4. Don’t read every word or every sentence. Let your eyes skim over the text, taking in key words. This is the first part of Skimming. You’ll learn more about this technique in Unit 5.
Skimming (1)
What is skimming? Skimming is used to quickly identify the main idea of a text. It is a reading technique that can help you to: ⇨ Read more quickly; ⇨ Decide if the text is interesting and whether you should read it in more detail. Skimming is done at a speed three to four times faster than normal reading. People often skim when they have lots of material to read in a limited amount of time.

Unit 2 商务习俗Background knowledgeI. Business EtiquetteA good point to remember in business etiquette is everyone should be treated with equal courtesy and respect. Times have changed and some of the old standards no longer apply. Administrative assistants or office support staff are important people and should never be taken for granted. Treat them courteously in all your transactions. Treat people the way you wish to be treated. Gender no longer needs to be the decisive factor in everyday events. Business etiquette should be a give and take, to help each other when help is needed and have consideration for others. Good manners and business etiquette have always been based on common sense and thoughtfulness.⊙Pounctuality. Be on time—no one wants to be kept waiting. If it is an unavoidable delay, try to contact the person. Keep in mind that you never know when you will encounter heavy traffic, wrecks, construction or other delays. Always allow extra time particularly if you are going to an interview. For interviews you should arrive 10-15 minutes before the interview time.⊙Smoking. Be aware of smoking policies. You should never smoke during an interview, ata meal or when you are aware that the other person’s pleasure does not include tobaccosmoke.⊙Office Parties. Office parties are good opportunities to improve morale and build good will. Keep in mind these are people who see you every day and they will remember a lapse in behavior. Be aware of your alcoholic consumption and do not embarrass yourself.Do not discuss business—this is a social occasion and an opportunity to learn more about your co-workers.II.
