Module 77-1 ChoicesPresentationsHarry’s AccidentHarry used to be a runner. When he was a young man, he could run very fast and he won several awards. Then one day while he was running a long side the road, he was hit by a car. The car was going too fast and had gone out of control. As a result of the accident, Harry al most died from a serious injury. Since then he hasn’t b een able to walk and he has to use a wheelchair. In spite of this injury, Harry has gone ahead with his life. After his injury, instead of thinking about all the things he couldn’t do, he focused on what he could do. He realized that there are many interes ting possibilities from someone who can’t walk. One of the things he became interested in was foreign languages. Everyday he listened to tapes and read books, and he found that he was very good at learning languages. After several years, he became fluent in 5 languages. Then he started working as a translator. Now he works full time for a translation company. He and a group of friends are even thinking of starting their own company. Though Harry wishes he could walk. He is looking forward to the future. Sometimes when looking back on his life, he wonders what might have happened had he not been injured. He misses being able to walk or run. But at least he is able to live on his own and do things that he enjoys. He thinks there is much to be thanked for.Joan’s ChallengeJoan used to work at a travel agency. She helped people plan trips and arranged for their hotels and transportation. She worked there for several years and was promoted several times for her hard work. Unfortunately the agency she was working for was bought by another company. As a result, her job was eliminated. At first, she was depressed. She had to pay for food and rent but she had no money coming in. She needed a job, but not just any job. She wanted a job that would be challenging. After applying for several jobs, she saw an ad in the newspaper. The ad was for a job at a small health food company. The pay wasn’t very good, but it looked like a company with a promising future. Since Joan was looking for a challenge, she decided to apply. Within a week, she had been offered the job. She wasn’t sure whether she should take or not because of the low pay. A friend advised her to take a higher paying job with a larger company. But Joan liked the idea of working her way up in a small company. She was confident that she would do well and that she could help it grow. Its products were good, and there was an increasing interest in health foods. Now after much hard work, she’s a vice-president at Ace Health. Since she joined the company, it has more than doubled in size. Joan looks forward to each day and feels proud of her acc omplishments. She’s glad she made the decision she did. If she hadn’t taken a chance, she thinks things wouldn’t have turned out as well as the have.Joe’s CaféJoe used to run a little coffee shop. Business was good and his shop was busy because it was near a factory. The factory workers often came there for coffee and to eat. Then two things happened. First, another coffee shop opened across the street. This hurt Joe’s business because some of his customers went to another coffee shop. The other shop’s pr ices were lower because its workers were paid less. Second, and more serious, the factory began to lay off workers. It was forced to reduce its operations because of its high levels of pollution. It wasn’t long before the number of customers had dropped by more than half. At that point, Joe was forced to close the business he had run for 20 years. Now he’s trying to decide what to do next. One possibility he is considering is to open up another coffee shop in another place. Another choice is to take a frien d’s advice and invest all of his money in the stock market. If he’s lucky he might make enough to retire. On the other hand, if his investment were to fail, he could lose everything. He’s not sure if he should take the risk.Sandra’s DilemmaSandra’s has h er own business, a small printing company. She starred more than 10 years ago. It’s a growing business, and her clien ts are happy with her work. She prints posters brochures, and books. She enjoys her work, and she takes pride in what she has accomplished. Now another company has offered her a lot of money to buy her business. They even want her to stay on and work for them. In fact, unless she agrees to stay on for at least a year, they won’t buy her business. They like the way she runs the company. On the other hand, they would like to cut costs and make the business even more profitable. She’s sure they would force her to make changes. Sandra has a choice. She can sell the company and let them control it. Or she can keep the business and run it herself. If she sells the company, she worries what might happen to her employees. She doesn’t want to sell unless she knows her employees can keep their jobs. If Sandra refuses their offer, the other company will compete against her. They will open a new company nearby. If they compete against her, she’ll have to works harder. There’s even a chance that her company will fail and be forced to close. On the other hand, she’ll be her own boss. She also hasmany loyal customers who are pleased with the quality of her work. If Sandra accepts their offer, the other company will pay her a high salary. She will also have a ten percent share of the larger company. On the other hand, if they own the company, they will make the big decisions. If they decide to they could even let her go. They could also decide to lay off some of her employees. She loves the work and she enjoys the challenge. If she sold the company, she would never know what she could have done on her own. She would also feel bad if her employees lost their jobs. She is going to have another meeting with them tomorrow.7-2 EpidemicOur changing livesOur lives are changing. New technologies are developing everyday, changing the ways we live and think. Better communications and transportation, for example, have given us a global economy. As a result, in every house there are products from around the world. Along with changes in technology, the world population continues to grow. People are living longer. Diseases which wiped out populations just 100 years ago are now under control. Medical science has made great progress. If your heart wears out you can get a new one. If your kidney fails, you can still live, and maybe even receive a transplant. Modern drags have made it easier to treat a cold or get over the flu. Many diseases, such as pneumonia and small pox, are now under control and wiped out entirely.Fighting InfectionsThere have been many great successes in history. The development of vaccines and antibiotics has helped to control the spread of infections diseases. Polio, for example, is a viral disease that attacks the nervous system. Because of the success of the polio vaccine, polio has been brought under control in most parts of the world. Drugs and vaccines work together with our body’s immune system to fight infection. Some kinds of infection come from viruses. HIV, for example, is a virus. Other kinds of infection come from bacteria. Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection that has killed millions. And recently, the E.coli bacteria have become a threat. To cure or control a disease, it is necessary to kill or control the infection which causes it. Sometimes a drug can be used to fight an infection. For example, antibiotics are often used to fight common infections, such as pneumonia. For some diseases, a vaccine is made by using a weakened from of a virus. When injected into the body, the vaccine causes the immune system to create antibodies. These antibodies will prevent or fight off infection. An other approach is to interfere with a virus’s ability toreproduce and spread. This can be done by injecting various substances into the body. The adaptability of lifeLife is adaptable. This has helped human beings to survive in many different situations. In any group of people there are genetic differences. As a result, some people will be more resistant to a new disease than others. The adaptability of life also has a bad side. It makes it far more difficult to control diseases. Bacteria and viruses are both life forms. Like human beings, they can adapt too. A drug that kills 99% of a particular type of bacteria may leave stronger bacteria that are resistant. As these stronger bacteria reproduce and spread, drugs which used to be effective no longer work. This means that new drugs or other means of control need to be developed. Of course, if an infection cannot be controlled, it can cause an epidemic. An epidemic occurs when a disease spreads to many people. Epidemics have occurred throughout history. In some cases, epidemics have resulted in many deaths.Preparing for our futureIn preparing for our future, we need to consider epidemics and how they spread. It used to be that diseases were confined to a small area. Travel was slow and difficult. A deadly epidemic in Europe couldn’t quickly spread to South America. Now, however, a serious disease could spread around the world within a few days. There is a real concern that a worldwide epidemic could break out. This epidemic could threaten out survival. Medical scientists and public health officials in many countries are now studying this issue. They want to develop policies and plans to be prepared for such an event. In the struggle against disease, national boundaries mean nothing. Di seases don’t stop at the borders between nations. Therefore, we need to think and act on a global scale. Clean water supplies, air quality in airplanes, and effective vaccination policies are world wide issues. The threat of a global epidemic is another example of how modernization is bringing us together. We must learn to live together more effectively than we have in the past. As with many important issues, the best approach is to use good judgment. If we work together, we can build a better future.。

FunctioningIn BusinessStudy GuideContents (2)Introduction (3)Course Content (4)Lesson Types (5)How to Do a Lesson (8)General Study Tips (9)Principles of Language Learning (10)Credits and Acknowledgments (11)Welcome to Functioning in Business! This interactive multimedia course is designed for intermediate-level students preparing to use English in a business context. Used by leading companies around the world, the course will give you a good start on improving your business English. The primary focus of the course is on language functions, such as requesting, refusing, suggesting, and confirming. The language is presented in the context of an executive's business trip to the U.S. and other business situations. As you study the video presentations and interactive exercises you will learn key phrases and expressions that will help you operate successfully in business interactions. The second major area of focus is on listening, both for general meaning and for specific items of information. It is through your careful listening, and repetition, that you will improve your English. You will also be asked to answer comprehension questions by using the mouse to click on the correct choice. The third aim of this course is to build a basic business vocabulary. The language has been carefully chosen to include high-frequency vocabulary that is essential in general business conversations.Fourth, Functioning in Business now features speech recognition activities. These activities give you the chance to participate actively in the same conversations you see in the video. In this way, you gain valuable practice in using the language functions introduced in each lesson. With DynEd's unique interactive design, you can study at your own pace. At any point in the program you can ask for repetition, an English text display or glossary screens that provide additional information about vocabulary and grammar. If you have our bilingual version, you can also ask for a translation. In addition, you may record your own voice as many times as you like and compare it with the native speaker models. The course can be used successfully for self study, by itself or with other DynEd courses such as Dynamic Business English, which complements Functioning in Business. The course will be most effective, however, when used in conjunction with classroom study. A comprehensive Teacher’s Guide is available, with handouts and suggested classroom activities, to help teachers integrate the courseware into classroom work. Mastery Tests are also available, and are unlocked through the use of DynEd’s award-winning Records Manager. See How to Do a Lesson, below.Variations: This section gives additional examples of how important language is used in different situations. In the first part, you may view the dialogues without interruption. In the second part you will interact with the characters by making language choices, both for comprehension and for speaking practice. The Speech Recognition exercises will allow you to take turns with the characters in the video, working your way through the dialogue, just like in a real conversation. These exercises should be done frequently.Functional Dictations: These exercises focus on important phrases from the video. In each lesson there are a number of dictations which you may choose.First, select a dictation. You will then see a video which includes the sentences from that dictation. When this is finished, the screen will change, and you will see a group of words at the top of the screen, and the dictation sentences with a number of blank spaces where words are missing. To hear each sentence, click on the number next to the sentence. Your task is to fill in each blank with the correct word from the words at the top of the screen. To do this, click on the word you wish to place, and then click on the space in the sentence where you want the word to appear. If you make a mistake, you may change your choice by putting a different word in the same space. You may listen to each sentence as many times as you wish by clicking on the number in front of the sentence. When you have completed all of the sentences, click on SCORE. This will correct all of the sentences and give you a score. Incorrect choices will be indicated by colored text. Do not click on SCORE until you have finished all the sentences. If your score is less than 65%, you will be asked to do the dictation again. If your score is greater than 65%, you will hear each sentence again, and the sentences will be rewrittenon the screen. You will then have a chance to correct your errors by placing different words in place of the incorrect words. When you have finished correcting your errors, click on END to indicate that you are finished. This will exit you from the dictation and bring you back to the Dictation selection screen.Function Grid: The focus here is on phrases used to make requests, to confirm, to disagree, and other important language functions.Click on the boxes to see examples, and then test yourself by clicking on the Question Box. Listen to the conversation and identify the language function. This section explains how to study a lesson, such as the Interactive Listening in Unit 1, Checking In. With a little practice, you will find that the Speech recognition exercises are both enjoyable and useful.Language sequencing in this course is based on the following principles of language learning:Short-term memory: For you to be able to process and repeat a phrase, you must first be able to hold it in short-term memory. Intensive listening practice and repetition of short phrases is necessary to build the ability to hold longer phrases in memory.Language functions: The video presentations and exercises will assist you in learning key language functions necessary for successful interaction in a business environment.Spiral sequencing: Language functions are reviewed and practiced in various contexts throughout the course even as new material is introduced. This attention to sequencing ensures retention and a deeper understanding of the material.Comprehensible input: For language acquisition to occur, the input language must be understood. For this reason, in addition to the visual support provided by the video in each unit, a written English transcription is provided for each sentence, along with an oral translation (in bilingual versions) and glossary support.Task-based learning: You will learn a new language more quickly and easily when you are actively involved in the learning process. The lessons of Functioning in Business are highly interactive, consisting of a carefully graded series of tasks designed to promote and reinforce your acquisition of new language and your ability to comprehend spoken English. Context: The language in an English course should be presented in context. Each context should support the language and should be adaptable to your own situation. The contexts presented in Functioning in Business are drawn from specific business scenarios such as a business lunch of a contract negotiation.Personalization and extension: Language learning, to be meaningful, must relate to contexts beyond those in which it is presented. While Functioning in Business focuses on particular business contexts, you will enhance your learning by extending new language concepts and structures to other business situations and by applying them to your own needs and experiences.Video Production: Haukom Associates, San Francisco CAVideo Director: Russ GlaserTechnical Coordination: Longman Group, U.K.Japanese Adaptation: Sony Language LaboratoriesThis course is adapted from the textbook, Functioning in Business, by P. How To Raise Your Study ScoreWhat is the Intelligent Tutor? The Intelligent Tutor analyzes your student study records. It makes judgments about how well and how often you use DynEd courses. It looks at study frequency, study activities, test scores, and comprehension. It also looks for negative study patterns, such as overuse of text when developing listening comprehension. It tries to help you study more effectively. What do the Study Scores mean? The range of scores varies somewhat from course to course. However, for most courses, the following chart is a guide:Excellent +5 +12 AGood study +2 +4 BFair study -1 +1 CPoor study -4 -2 DVery poor -12 -5 FA student with a positive score of +5 in New Dynamic English, for example, is studying efficiently. There is still room for improvement, but such a score means that the student is doing very well and should show good proficiency gains. The Tutor comments that accompany the score indicate what the student is doing well and what, if anything, they need to improve.A student with a negative score of -5 in Dynamic Business English, for example, is not studying efficiently. This student needs coaching. Again, the Tutor comments indicate what the student needs to do to improve their study score for that course.Common Questions About Study Score Changes1. Why is my Study Score 0 when I start my study of DynEd?The Intelligent Tutor looks for patterns in how you study. This generally requires that you to listen to at least 100 to 200 sentences in a course before you get a score. For example, if you don’t repeat some sentences or if you use the text button too often, the Tutor will lower your Study Score and give you the reason. If you quickly change your way of studying, by repeating more sentences and not using text so often, your score will increase and the messages will go away. The starting point is zero, and the ending point is based on your overall study record.2. On Friday, my study score was 5. On Monday, it was only3. Why did it go down? The Intelligent Tutor looks at how many times you have studied in the past 14 days. If you didn’t study on the weekend, your study frequency during the past 14 days may have gone below theminimum number of days required to get points for good study frequency. For NDE the minimum number of study days is 4 days. Below 4 days results in a negative score of -2. Total study time for these days is also monitored and must be above a minimum level.3. I just came back from a 2 week vacation, and my Study Score is 4 points lower now thanbefore. How can I raise it?Your Study Score is lower because you didn’t study during your vacation. But don’t worry. After you study several times, on different days, your Study Score will quickly return to what it was.Remember, the Intelligent Tutor checks your study frequency and study time over the previous 14 days. This is important for the creation of long-term memories and language skill development. For NDE, if you study 8 or more days in that period, the Study Score bonus is +3. This frequency must be maintained for each 14 day period, and a minimum amount of study time must also be maintained. 4. I get the message: “Too much text button. It seems you are using the text button too much.”How can I get this message to go away?Depending on the course, this message comes up when you are using the text button too muchcompared to your use of the repeat button. For example, if you use the repeat button 50 times and you use the text button 15 times or more, you will get this message. If you continue to study and continue to use the repeat button without using the text button so much, the message will go away. Please note that the Intelligent Tutor only looks at the text button in the lessons where the language models are presented, and not in review lessons or support lessons such as question practice or click and drag. The Intelligent Tutor also looks for overuse of any button, such as the repeat or record button, if it is pressed too many times in quick succession. This happens if a student presses a button just to raise the study score without really practicing effectively.5. Why do I get the message “Not using Voice Record enough”?This message indicates you are not recording your voice enough in the presentation lessons, where language models are introduced and practiced in context. The Tutor does not count your voicerecording in support lessons, such as question practice or focus exercises, where you can see the text while recording your voice. Just reading the text does not have the same value as listening to asentence or phrase and then recording it from memory. Using the Voice Record feature in thepresentation lessons is very important for developing your fluency.6. How are Study Scores calculated?Study Score calculations vary from course to course. For example, in Let’s Go, there is no penalty for using text support. This is because the learners are very young and there isn’t much interference between text and listening. In NDE however, learners are older, so there is a penalty for overusing text. In NDE, overuse of text support results in a negative score of -2. Underuse of voice record and not repeating sentences enough (in presentation lessons) also result in negative scores of -2. Students should be actively engaged in the language, which means stopping to listen, repeat, and record some sentences in each study session. If you follow the study suggestions in How to Study DynEd, your Study Scores will be good. Please study this document.7. What is the Weighted Study Score, or WSS?When you study more than one DynEd course, your teacher will see a Weighted Study Score, which is an average of your Study Scores for each course. If your Study Score for NDE is +6 and your Study Score for DBE is +2, then the WSS will be a weighted average depending on the time you studied each course. If you have studied NDE for 50 hours and DBE for 25 hours, then the WSS will be +4.7 (14/3). If you have studied NDE for 25 hours and DBE for 50 hours, the WSS will be +3.3 (10/3).Sample Tutor Messages & Score Values(for NDE)•Too much text button. It seems you are using the text button too much. (-2)•It seems you are not recording your voice enough. (in presentation lessons) (-2) Note: This message may appear even when a student is using voice record a lot, but not enough in the presentation lessons.•Please use the repeat button more. (-2)•Frequent practice is the key to language learning. Try to study at least 3-4 times per week.•Not listening to your voice enough. (-2)•After recording your voice, listen and compare your own voice to the native speaker.•Good use of the repeat button. Please continue to listen carefully. (+2)•Good use of voice recording feature. (+2) (in presentation lessons)•To improve your listening and speaking, record several sentences during each study session.Listen to yourself and compare your recording with the native speaker.•Your Mastery Test scores are good. (+2)•Most students should score 90 or more if they have studied the lessons effectively.•Good study frequency. Please continue to study as often as possible. (+1) or (+3)•Frequent practice is the key to language learning. Try to study at least 3-4 times per week. •You are doing well with Speech Recognition. (+2)•To improve your speaking, do the Speech Recognition exercises often.Study Score Samples Class Overview: 1st grade Let’s Go (Japan)1) too much use of translation2) studied more than 30 days
