I am frequently asked the question, ”Can you use chopsticks?”. I have lived in Korea, Japan, and China. In each country, I have, more often than not and without having requested one, been given a fork when one was available. I have politely refusde and said that I would be fine with chopsticks. Sometimes, I have to make further explanation.Chopsticks are the least of my worries when I am eating in an Asian home or restaurant. In fact, learning how to use chopsticks takes me nothing but a few weeks. This is not to say I was skillful, though. Learning how to use chopsticks is easy for me, whereas learning the rituals and how to conduct myself at the table is quite difficult. Just how many times do I have to say “no, thank you” when I really mean “no, thank you, I truly am full”? How do I get away with refusing more food without offending someone? If I insist and I still get more, is it appropriate just not to eat it? This would be impolite where I come from.I have enjoyed many great meals and my interactions withthe people have been great. I am increasingly aware that I will never be able to give back as much as I have received. I don’t know how I can ever thank all of the people who introducde me to eating in Asia.

When I first came to the USA,I made friends with a neighbor who used to live only two blocks away from my street. We used to visit each other and go out together sometimes. This friend taught me a lot about American culture ,but in some cases I had to learn the different way, because we didn’t have enough time together for me to learn all about American culture from him.One day this same friend invited me to a party. It wasn’t a(n)real party, only some kind of informal get together.Since itwas summer time,we had a cookout, where most of his American friends and relatives were known to me,but there were others I had never met before. It was the most embarrassing party for me when I noticed that everybody was wearing jeans and simple T-shirts for the day, while I arrived in proper dress with my shoes and my hair all fixed for a fancy party. It was hard to explain my embarrassment to the other guests .When one of them turned around and said,“What nice clothes! What’s the occasion?” I felt my face burning hot.I didn’t answer at all.If she knew how bad I already felt, she wouldn’t have said that to me.Maybe she didn’t mean to make me feel uncomfortable, but my reaction had to do with the way I already felt. Many times I thought of going home and changing but I knew theywould notice .It would be even worse for me because I knew they would quickly think that I felt out of place .So I wanted to pretend that Iwas OK ....I have already realized their customs are different from mine. They care less about formality(形式)unless it is a special occasion, likea wedding or a very formal invitation.

1.“So you want to be a rock and roll star?” asked the musician, Bob Dylan. You have decided to seek fame’s spotlight. And you will not be persuaded otherwise. What is it that lures you? Is it the worshipping fans? Or is it simply to be recognized for being truly fantastic at something? This is all quite understandable. I should warn you, though. It is difficult to sustain the public’s favor. These people will grow bored so easily. Even if you should succeed, you might not be happy. Once you win in your conquest of fame, complaints will follow. For example, people will say that your work fails to show a lack of continuity in its appeal. You see, their enthusiasm will soon dissolve. I should also tell you that there will be plenty of people who will want to exploit you during your brief stay at the top. Friends? Sure, as long as you have money you’ll have friends who will suck everything you have out of you. And don’t forget to watch your agent closely. You might need a good lawyer and an accountant, but they too will want their piece of the pie-making money out if you.I see, you understand the cruelty of the situation. However, your chase for fame can’t be discouraged by my pessimistic outlook. Go ahead then. Don’t let me stop you. But when you fail or fall right back where you started and you’re miserable, don’t accuse me of not having warned you. I’ve done all that I can for you."所以你想成为摇滚明星?"问音乐家,鲍勃· 迪伦。

When I first came to the USA,I made friends with a neighbor who used to live only two blocks away from my street. We used to visit each other and go out together sometimes. This friend taught me a lot about American culture ,but in some cases I had to learn the different way, because we didn’t have enough time together for me to learn all about American culture from him.
One day this same friend invited me to a party. It wasn’t a
(n)real party, only some kind of informal get together.Since it
was summer time,we had a cookout, where most of his American friends and relatives were known to me,but there were others I had never met before.
What’s the occasion?” I felt my face burning hot.I didn’t answer at all.If she knew how bad I already felt, she wouldn’t have said that to me.
Maybe she didn’t mean to make me feel uncomfortable, but my reaction had to do with the way I already felt.
Many times I thought of going home and changing but I knew they
would notice .It would be even worse for me because I knew they would quickly think that I felt out of place .So I wanted to pretend that I
was OK ....
I have already realized their customs are different from mine. They care less about formality(形式)unless it is a special occasion, like
a wedding or a very formal invitation.
