2020年商务英语BEC初级考试模拟试题Read the text taken from an article about the development of international managersChoose the best sentence from the opposite page to fill each of the gaps .For each gap 9– 14, mark one letter (A-H) on your Answer Sheet .Do not use any letter more than once .There is an example at the beginning .(0)Search for the “ worldly –wise” company executivesThe quest for international managers is underway in virtually every industrialized economy , the search has been made urgent by the globalization of world markets and the growth in crossborder mergers and acquisitions. (0) Many firms report being so stretched that they simply do not have enough of the high-quality people they require to lead their their global expansion.Other companies are having difficulties releasing experienced people from existing operations in order to lead new international ventures. There are indications that a shorftage of internationally skilled people may be an important constraint on fir ms’ international ambitions. (9) However, identifying the need for international managers is easier than developing them.So what makes an international manager? Paul Evans, a professor at INSEAD, the European business school, does not believe that any particular nationality produces a more international manager. Neither does he believe that it’s a matter of having the ability to cope with a lifestyle that involves working in Madrid one day, London the next andBerlin the day after. (10) Rather, he believes that the secret of being a good international manger is being comfortable with managing diversity.Ford of Europe, which has encouraged the development of international managers for more than 20 years, says that its managers are globally-minded before they become global operators. (11) a car that you buy in the UK, for example, is going to be the same car that sells in Germany, Finland and Portugal, so the people who are involved in the car’s development have to be aware of the market requirements inall those different countries.Generally, it seems that the only effective way to develop international skills and perspectives is through direct international experience. (12) Such experiences open people’s minds to the fact that things are done differen tly lese where and encourages them to think in a wilder context..Formulating effective strategies for developing a company’s management resource is a demanding exercise, with conflicting issues to be solved (13) Another dilemma is whether to use local managers or expatriates. The recruitment and development of effectiveinternational managers requires considerable financial resources and can be hard to justify at budget meetings. (14)however , without them, companies will continue to find their expansion plans frustrated by a lack of internationally effective managers.A、from the moment they join the company, employees are faced with having to think internationallyB、This can be through involvement in international task forces or through living and working abroad.C、Should , for example, only an elite few receive international experience in preparation for top jobs or should it be offered to a wider group?D、these problems mean that developing managers who think and operate globally is absolutely vital for companies operating in foreign markets.E、Language training , overseas visits and in-house management courses are all expensive to implement.F、Jet-setting between international operations merely creates a business equivalent of the over-packaged touristG、Companies are now emphasizing the human skills involved in managing other peopleH、These trends are pushing companies’ existing management resources to the limit参考答案: 9-10 DF 11-14 ABCE。

Interviewers find it useful to ask candidates about the way they behaved in difficult situations in the past, for example with an angry customer or colleague. These questions allow applicants to explain how they acted in a real-life situation and, consequently, give clues as to how they would act again in similar situations. Candidates are likely to tell the truth as speaking from memory leaves little time to invent what happened. On the other hand questions which ask candidates to imagine how they would behave in a situation which they have probably never met are of little or no value. This is because they only provide answers about how candidates would hope to behave, and this might not match the actions they would actually take. In any interview candidates must be treated fairly, with questions asked in the same manner and with no candidate’s interview lasting considerably longer than any other’s. Candidates should always be given the opportunity to ask questions throughout the interview. Jan Godley, head of Human Resources at Aspley Supermarkets says: ‘A company needs staff not only who have the right qualifications and experience, but also who are happy to fit in with the company’s way of doing things. Our managers have to accept the idea that everyone working here is a colleague (managers are always known by their first names), and that spending time actually in the store with colleagues and customers, rather than in their offices, is part of the job. For management posts, we organise pre-interview group exercises to measure team-working and leadership skills, sometimes along with activities to assess personal qualities. In all our interviews we pay attention to body language. It is natural for candidates to show signs of being nervous at an interview but most relax after a few minutes and become more confident. However, if the nervousness continues until the end of the interview, especially when difficult questions are asked, we would begin to have doubts about that candidate. Like all employers, we want to take on staff who are at ease with colleagues and customers so it is important to watch the way candidates behave, as well as listen to what they have to say.’23.According to the article, why are questions about a candidate’s past behaviour useful?A.They prove the candidate will act appropriately in different circumstances.B.They show the candidate can remember details of the situation.C.They demonstrate how the candidate might act in the future.正确答案:C24.Why is asking candidates to imagine their reactions to a situation unhelpful?A.Candidates may have no experience of this situation.B.Candidates may act differently in the real-life situation.C.Candidates may never meet such a situation.正确答案:B25.According to the article,A.candidates should ask questions at the end of the interview.B.interviewers should ask all the candidates the same question.C.interviews should all last for roughly the same length of time.正确答案:C26.What does Jan Godley say about the managers in her company?A.They must spend some time with customers in the store.B.They must know the first names of all their staff.C.They must spend most of their time in their offices.正确答案:A27.Management applicants at Aspley Supermarkets areA.asked a number of questions about their personal qualities.B.assessed on their ability to work within a group.C.asked to say what leadership skills the job will require.正确答案:B28.According to Jan Godley, how do candidates often behave at interviews?A.They show a lack of confidence at first.B.They are skilled at hiding their nervousness.C.They suddenly lose confidence when asked difficult questions.正确答案:APART SIXBad news for bankers There was great uncertainty today about the future for employees of Lancet Bank following publication of (29) pany’s yearly financial results.

A friend of mine was fond of drawing horse. He drew the horses very well, but he always began the tail. Now it is the Western rule to begin at the head of the horse, that is why I was surprised. It struck me that it could not really make any difference whether the artist begins at the head or the tailor the belly(肚子) or the foot of the horse, if he really knows his business. And most great artists who really knowtheir business do not follow other people’s rule. They make their own rules. Every one of them does his work in a way peculiar(奇特的) to himself; and the peculiarity means only that he finds it more easy to work in that way.Now the very same thing is true to literature(文学). And the question, "How shall I begin?" only means that you wantto begin at the head instead of beginning at the tail or somewhere else. That is, you are not yet experienced(有经验的) enough to trust to your own powers. When you become more experienced you willnever ask the question, and I think that you will often begin at the tail --that is to say, you will write the end of the story before you have even thought of the beginning.1. A friend of the writer’s drew the horses ____.A. very wellB. in the way of western ruleC. in the way of his own ruleD. all of the above2. When Jim was made redundant from his full-time job selling equipment to sports organizations, he realized he already knew plenty of people responsible for turnstiles. This made him sure that his hobby could become a successful new career. He had 1000 brochures printed and posted them to clubs around the country. For two weeks he heard nothing. ThenTroon Football Club requested a quotation for repairing their turnstiles, with the possibility of the work becoming regular. He wanted the contract so much that he cut his profit marginto a minimum. He won it, though with no guarantee of further work, and celebrated the launch of his new business. In the next month, club after club offered Jim work, and he recruited his first employee, Alec, to help re-install the repaired turnstiles. Alec, however, took frequent breaks and never put in more effort than he had to. What's more, he seemed unhappy working for Jim. Although Jim had nocomplaints about the quality of his work, Alec's attitude made him difficult to work with.Jim considered-dismissing Alec, but recruiting him had taken a long time because there had been so many suitable people to interview. Now he was simply too busy to go through that process again. And anyway, Jim had employed Alec on the understanding that the job would probably end when the current contracts were completed.Suddenly, though, Jim's business was at risk. He made very few mistakes, and calculated his costs and the time that a job would take very accurately. BUt rhe had forgotten that generally clubs have repairs done between the end of one football season and the start of the next. Now no mjor jobs were coming in.After buying a replacement van, as his old one was beyond repair, he could only just cover Alec's wages and his own. But without more work he had no future. The solution was something more regular, and he decided to produce turnstiles, as well as repair them. For an investment like this, though, he needed help, and he persuaded his bank to give him a loan. From then on, Cartwright Turnstile Services just grew and grew and now employs three full-time workers. Why was Jim Cartwright confident about starting a business repairing turnstiles?A.He had learnt from mistakes that his previous employer made.B.He had a lot of contacts with possible customers.C.He had experience of doing the work in his previous job.59、 Why was Jim happy that Troon Football Club gave him the contract?A.It was the first his firm had received.B.It led to long-term work for the club.C.It provided him with a good profit.60、 What problem did Jim have with Alec?A.His work was not of a high enough standard,B.He did as little work as possible.C.He made a lot of complaints about the business,61、 Why did Jim decide to continue employing Alec?A.It would take too long to fin~ a replacementB.There was a lack of people with the right qualifications.C.Jim had given him a contract which guaranteed him work.62、 Why did Jim find himself in danger of going out of business?A.His costs were higher than he had estimated.B.He found that each job took longer than he expected.C.His work was mostly limited to certain times of year.63、 Jim asked his bank for a loan in order toA.pay the wages billB.start manufacturing.C.buy a new van.PARI SIX:Questions 29-4064、Read the article below about working as a secretaryin Hong Kong.Choose the co-rect word to fill each gap from A, B or C.For each question (64-75), mark one letter (A, B or C) on your Answer Sheet.Secretaries in Hong KongSecretaries in Hong Kong work hard. 初级BEC阅读理解试题附答案2020

初级BEC阅读理解试题附答案2020初级商务英语阅读理解试题Achieving a successful mergerHowever attractive the figures may look on paper, in thelong run the success or failure of a merger depends on thehuman factor. When the agreement has been signed and theaccountants have departed, the real problems may only just bebeginning. If there is a culture clash between the two companiesin the way their people work, then all the efforts of the financiersand lawyers to strike a deal may have been in vain.According to Chris Bolton of KS Management Consultants, 70% of mergers fail to live up totheir promise of shareholder value, riot through any failure in economic terms but because theintegration of people is unsuccessful. Corporates, he explains, concentrate their efforts before amerger on legal, technical and financial matters. They employ a range of experts to obtain themost favourable contract possible. But even at these early stages, people issues must be takeninto consideration. The strengths and weaknesses of both organisations should be assessed and, ifit is a merger of equals, then careful thoughtshould be given to which personnel, from which side, should take on the key roles. This was the issue in 2022年when the proposed merger between two pharmaceuticalcompanies promised to create one of the largest players in the industry. For both companies themerger was intended to reverse falling market share and shareholder value. However, although thecompanies' skill bases were compatible, the chief executives of the two companies could not agreewhich of them was to head up the new organisation. This illustrates the need to compromise if amerger is to take place. But even in mergers that do go ahead, there can be culture clashes. One way to avoid this isto work with focus groups to see how employees view the existing culture of their organisation. Inone example, where two global organisations in the food sector were planning to merge, focusgroups discovered that the companies displayed very different profiles. One was sales-focused,knew exactly what it wanted to achieve and pushed initiatives through. The other got involved inlengthy discussions, trying out options methodically and making contingency plans. The firstresponded quickly to changes in the marketplace; the second took longer, but the option iteventually chose was usuallythe correct one. Neither company's approach would have worked forthe other. The answer is not to adopt one company's approach, or even to try to incorporate everyaspect of both organisations, but to create a totally new culture. This means taking the best fromboth sides and making a new organisation that everyone can accept. Or almost everyone.Inevitably there will be those who cannot adapt to a different culture. Research into the impact ofmergers has found that companies with differing management styles are the ones that need towork hardest at creating a new culture.Another tool that can help to get the right cultural mix is intercultural analysis. This involvescarrying out research that looks at the culture of a company and the business culture of thecountry in which it is based. It identifies how people, money and time are managed in a company, and investigates the business customs of the country and how its politics, economics and historyimpact on the way business is done.13 According to the text, mergers can encounter problems whenA contracts are signed too quickly.B experts cannot predict accurate figures.C conflicting attitudes cannot be resolved.D staff are opposed to the terms of the deal.14 According to Chris Bolton, what do many organisations do in preparation for a merger?A ensure their interests are representedB give reassurances to shareholdersC consider the effect of a merger on employeesD analyse the varying strengths of their staff15 The proposed merger of two pharmaceutical groups failed becauseA major shareholders were opposed.B there was a fall in the demand for their products.C there were problems combining their areas of expertise.D an issue of personal rivalry could not be resolved.16 According to the text, focus groups can help companies toA develop new initiatives.B adopt contingency plans.C be decisive and react rapidly.D evaluate how well matched they are.17 Creating a new culture in a newly merged organisationmeans thatA management styles become more flexible.B there is more chance of the merger working.中华考试网C staff will find it more difficult to adapt to the changes.D successful elements of the original organisations are lost.18 According to the text, intercultural analysis will showA what kind of benefits a merger can lead to.B how the national context affects the way a company is run.C how long it will take for a company culture to develop.D what changes companies should make before a merger takes place.参考答案接解析《Achieving a successful merger》,实现一个成功的并购。

1.If a country wants to tDo you know how to play a game called “Musical Chairs”? It is easy to play and most people enjoy it. All you need are some chairs, some people and some way of making music. You may use a piano or any other musical instrument, if someone can play it. You may use a tape recorder. You can even use a radio.
Put the chairs in a row. The chairs may be put in twos, back to back. A better way is to have the chairs in one row
with each chair facing in the opposite direction to the chair next to it.
The game is easy. When the music starts, the players
walk round the chairs. Everyone goes in the same direction,
of course, they should walk in time to the music. If the music is fast they should walk quickly. If the music is slow, they should walk slowly.
The person playing music cannot see the people in the game. When the music stops, the players try to sit on the chairs. If a person cannot find a chair to sit on, he drops out. Then, before the music starts again, one chair must be taken away. When the music stops again, one more player will be out.
At last, there will be two players and one chair. The
one who sits on the chair when the music stops is the winner.

3. 选D.第2段的Put the chairs in a row就是“把椅子排成一排”这意。

选D.
4. 选C.由第3段中的句子When the music starts, the players walk round the chairs.可知答案为C.。
