“Hello!Good morning! ”

Mary

Mark Twain-the Mirror of AmericaMost Americans remember Mark Twain as the father of Huck Finn's idyllic cruise through eternal boyhood and Tom Sawyer's endless summer of freedom and adventure. In-deed, this nation's best-loved author was every bit as ad-venturous, patriotic, romantic, and humorous as anyone has ever imagined. I found another Twain as well –one who grew cynical, bitter, saddened by the profound personal tragedies life dealt him, a man who became obsessed with the frailties of the human race, who saw clearly ahead a black wall of night.在大多数美国人的心目中,马克吐温是位伟大作家,他描写了哈克费恩永恒的童年时代中充满诗情画意的旅程和汤姆索亚在漫长的夏日里自由自在历险探奇的故事;的确,这位美国最受人喜爱的作家的探索精神、爱国热情、浪漫气质及幽默笔调都达到了登峰造极的程度;但我发现还有另一个不同的马克吐温——一个由于深受人生悲剧的打击而变得愤世嫉俗、尖酸刻薄的马克吐温,一个为人类品质上的弱点而忧心忡忡、明显地看到前途是一片黑暗的人; Tramp printer, river pilot , Confederate guerrilla, prospector, starry-eyed optimist, acid-tongued cynic: The man who became Mark Twain was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens and he ranged across the nation for more than a third of his life, digesting the new American experience before sharing it with the world as writer and lecturer. He adopted his pen name from the cry heard in his steamboat days, signaling two fathoms 12 feet of water -- a navigable depth. His popularity is attested by the fact that more than a score of his books remain in print, and translations are still read around the world. The geographic core, in Twain's early years, was the great valley of the Mississippi River, main artery of transportation in the young nation's heart. Keelboats , flatboats , and large rafts carried the first major commerce. Lumber, corn, tobacco, wheat, and furs moved downstream to the delta country; sugar, molasses , cotton, and whiskey traveled north. In the 1850's, before the climax of westward expansion, the vast basin drained three-quarters of the settled United States. Young Mark Twain entered that world in 1857 as a cub pilot on a steamboat. The cast of characters set before him in his new profession was rich and varied a cosmos. He participated abundantly in this life, listening to pilothouse talk of feuds, piracies, lynchings ,medicine shows, and savage waterside slums. All would resurface in his books, together with the colorful language that he soaked up with a memory that seemed phonographic1857年,少年马克吐温作为蒸汽船上的一名小领航员踏人了这片天地;在这个新的工作岗位上,他接触到的是各式各样的人物,看到的是一个多姿多彩的大干世界;他完全地投身到这种生活之中,经常在操舵室里听着人们谈论民间争斗、海盗抢劫、私刑案件、游医卖药以及河边的一些化外民居的故事;所有这一切,连同他那像留声机般准确可靠的记忆所吸收的丰富多彩的语言,后来都有机会在他的作品中得以再现;Steamboat decks teemed not only with the main current of pioneering humanity, but its flotsam of hustlers, gamblers, and thugs as well. From them all Mark Twain gained a keen perception of the human race, of the difference between what people claim to be and what they really are. His four and a half year s in the steamboat trade marked the real beginning of his education, and the most lasting part of it. In later life Twain acknowledged that the river had acquainted him with every possible type of human nature. Those acquaintanceships strengthened all his writing, but he never wrote well than when he wrote of the people a-long the great stream. When railroads began drying up the demand for steam-boat pilots and the Civil War halted commerce, Mark Twain left the river country. He tried soldiering for two weeks with a motley band of Confederate guerrillas who diligently avoided contact with the enemy. Twain quit after deciding, "... I knew more about retreating than the man that invented retreating. He went west by stagecoach and succumbed to the epidemic of gold and silver fever in Nevada's Washoe region. For eight months he flirted with the colossal wealth available to the lucky and the persistent, and was rebuffed. Broke and discouraged, he accepted a job as reporter with the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise, to literature's enduring gratitude. From the discouragement of his mining failures, Mark Twain began digging his way to regional fame as a newspaper reporter and humorist. The instant riches of a mining strike would not be his in the reporting trade, but for making money, his pen would prove mightier than his pickax. In the spring of 1864, less than two years after joining the Territorial Enterprise, he boarded the stagecoach for San Francisco, then and now a hotbed of hopeful young writers. Mark Twain honed and experimented with his new writing muscles, but he had to leave the city for a while because of some scathing columns he wrote. Attacks on the city government, concerning such issues as mistreatment of Chinese, so angered officials that he fled to the goldfields in the Sacramento Valley. His descriptions of the rough-country settlers there ring familiarly in modern world accustomed to trend setting on the West Coast. "It was a splendid population –for all the slow, sleepy, sluggish-brained sloths stayed at home... It was thatpopulation that gave to California a name for getting up astounding enterprises and rushing them through with a magnificent dash and daring and a recklessness of cost or consequences, which she bears unto this day – and when she projects a new surprise, the grave world smiles as usual, and says 'Well, that is California all over. In the dreary winter of 1864-65 in Angels Camp, he kept a notebook. Scattered among notations about the weather and the tedious mining-camp meals lies an entry noting a story he had heard that day – an entry that would determine his course forever: "Coleman with his jumping frog – bet stranger $50 – stranger had no frog, and C. got him one – in the meantime stranger filled C. 's frog full of shot and he couldn't jump. Retold with his descriptive genius, the story was printed in newspapers across the United States and became known as "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County." Mark Twain's national reputation was now well established as "the wild humorist of the Pacific slope." Two year s later the opportunity came for him to take a distinctly American look at the Old World. In New York City the steamship Quaker City prepared to sail on a pleasure cruise to Europe and the Holy Land. For the first time, a sizable group of United States citizens planned to journey as tourists -- a milestone , of sorts, in a country's development. Twain was assigned to accompany them, as correspondent 工for a California newspaper. If readers expected the usual glowing travelogue , they were sorely surprised. Unimpressed by the Sultan of Turkey, for example, he reported, “... one could set a trap anywhere and catch a dozen abler men in a night.” Casually he debunked re vered artists and art treasures, and took unholy verbal shots at the Holy Land. Back home, more newspapers began printing his articles. America laughed with him. Upon his return to the States the book version of his travels,The Innocents Abroad, became an instant best-seller. At the age of 36 Twain settled in Hartford, Connecticut. His best books were published while he lived there. As early as 1870 Twain had experimented with a story about the boyhood adventures of a lad he named Billy Rogers. Two years later, he changed the name to Tom, and began shaping his adventures into a stage play. Not until 1874 did the story begin developing in ear nest. After publication in 1876, Tom Sawyer quickly became a classic tale of American boyhood. Tom's mischievous daring, ingenuity, and the sweet innocence of his affection for Becky Thatcher are almost as sure to be studied in American schools to-day as is the Declaration of Independence. Mark Twain's own declaration of independence came from another character. Six chapters into Tom Sawyer, he drags in "the juvenile pariah of the village, Huckleberry Finn, son of the town drunkard." Fleeing a respectable life with the puritanical Widow Douglas, Huck protests to his friend, Tom Sawyer: "I've tried it, and it don't work; it don't work, Tom. It ain't for me ... The widder eats by a bell; she goes to bed by a bell; she gits up by a bell – everything's so awful reg'lar a body can't stand it." Nine years after Tom Sawyer swept the nation, Huck was given a life of his own, in a book often considered the best ever written about Americans. His raft flight down the Mississippi with a runaway slave presents a moving panorama for exploration of American society. On the river, and especially with Huck Finn, Twain found the ultimate expression of escape from the pace he lived by and often deplored, from life's regularities and the energy-sapping clamor for success. Mark Twain suggested that an ingredient was missing in the American ambition when he said: "What a robust people, what a nation of thinkers we might be, if we would only lay ourselves on the shelf occasionally and renew our edges." Personal tragedy haunted his entire life, in the deaths of loved ones: his father, dying of pneumonia when Sam was 12; his brother Henry, killed by a steamboat explosion; the death of his son, Langdon, at 19 months. His eldest daughter, Susy, died of spinal meningitis, Mrs. Clemens succumbed to a heart attack in Florence, and youngest daughter. Jean, an epileptic, drowned in an upstairs bathtub. Bitterness fed on the man who had made the world laugh. The moralizing of his earlier writing had been well padded with humor. Now the gloves came off with biting satire. He pretended to praise the U. S. military for the massacre of 600 Philippine Moros in the bowl of a volcanic, crater. In The Mysterious Stranger, he insisted that man drop his religious illusions and depend upon himself, not Providence, to make a better world. The last of his own illusions seemed to have crumbled near the end. Dictating his autobiography late in life, he commented with a crushing sense of despair on men's final release from earthly struggles: "... they vanish from a world where they were of no consequence; where they achieved nothing; where they were a mistake and a failure and a foolishness; where they have left no sign that they had existed – a world which will lament them a day and for-get them forever.” Devices of figurationMetaphorMark Twain --- Mirror of Americasaw clearly ahead a black wall of night...main artery of transportation in the young nation's heartthe vast basin drained three-quarters of the settled United StatesAll would resurface in his books...that he soaked up...Steamboat decks teemed...main current of...but its flotsamWhen railroads began drying up the demand......the epidemic of gold and silver fever...Twain began digging his way to regional fame...Mark Twain honed and experimented with his new writing muscles......took unholy verbal shots...Simile:Most American remember M. When it comes to my impression of the United States, I have to say it's a mix of both positive and negative feelings. On the positive side, I have always been impressed by the diversity and the opportunities that the U.S. offers. There are people from all over the worldliving and working in the U.S., and this diversity creates a unique and vibrant culture. The country also provides a wide range of opportunities for personal and professional growth, and this is something that I find very appealing. On the negative side, I can't ignore the fact that the U.S. has its fair share of social and political issues. For example, the issue of gun violence has always been a concern for me, and it's something that I associate with the U.S. The political polarization and the division in the country is also something that I find troubling. It seems like people are more divided than ever, and this creates alot of tension and conflict.Overall, my impression of the U.S. is a mix of admiration and concern. I admire the country's diversityand opportunities, but I am also concerned about the social and political issues that it faces.

美国印象美国,我来找你啦一、America,I’m here美国,America。

The first thing that comes to mind when I think about the United States is its diversity. From the people to the landscapes, there is so much variety to be found in the US. It's like a melting pot of different cultures, traditions, and perspectives. The food in the US is another standout feature. Whether it's a classic American burger and fries or a slice of New York pizza, there's no shortage of delicious options to choose from. And let's not forget about the Southern comfort food or the Tex-Mex cuisine – each region has its own unique flavors to offer. One of the things that strikes me about the US is the sheer size of everything. The buildings are tall, the highways are wide, and the portions are huge. Everything seems larger than life, which can be both impressive and overwhelming at the same time. The entertainment industry in the US is also something that leaves a lasting impression. From Hollywood blockbusters to Broadway shows, there is always something exciting happening in the world of entertainment. And of course, who can forget about the music scene? The US has produced some of the most iconic musicians and bands in history. The natural beauty of the US is truly breathtaking. From the Grand Canyon to the Yellowstone National Park, there are so many stunning natural wonders to explore. The country is also home to some beautiful beaches, mountains, and forests, making it a paradise for nature lovers. The "can-do" attitude of Americans is something that I find inspiring. There is a sense of optimism and resilience that seems to be ingrained in the culture. People are always striving to achieve their dreams and overcome obstacles, which is a quality that I greatly admire. The history of the US is rich and complex, with so many pivotal events and influential figures that have shaped thenation. From the American Revolution to the Civil Rights Movement, the US has a story that is both fascinating andat times, troubling. It's a history that is worth learning about and reflecting on.Overall, the United States is a country of contrastsand contradictions, but that's what makes it so captivating. It's a place where you can find both the traditional andthe modern, the natural and the man-made, the familiar and the unexpected. It's a country that never fails to leave a lasting impression.。

Impressions of AmericansAmericans, a diverse and vibrant culture, have always fascinated me. They are a people who value independence, innovation, and freedom. From their unique way of life to their unwavering spirit, they have left a lasting impression on me.Firstly, I am impressed by their strong sense of individuality. Americans cherish their freedom and independence, and this is reflected in every aspect of their lives. They value personal growth and self-expression, individuals to pursue their passions and dreams. This individualistic culture has fostered a vibrant and creative society where people are encouraged to think outside the box and challenge norms.Secondly, Americans are known for their competitiveness and entrepreneurship. They have a strong work ethic and a belief in the power of hard work. This is evident in the numerous successful businesses and innovations that have originated in the United States. Americans are constantly striving to improve themselves and their communities, driving progress and prosperity. Moreover, I admire their open-mindedness and tolerance. Despite their diverse backgrounds and beliefs, Americans embrace each other's differences and strive to create an inclusive society. They value diversity and welcome people from all corners of the globe, making their country a true melting pot of cultures. However, it's not all roses. Americans, like any other culture, have their flaws. Sometimes, their competitiveness can lead to excessive materialism and a focus on short-term gains. Additionally, their individualistic culture can sometimes lead to social isolation and a lack of community spirit. In conclusion, Americans have left a profound impression on me. Their strong sense of individuality, competitiveness, entrepreneurship, open-mindedness, and tolerance have all contributed to their unique culture and society. While they have their flaws, I believe that their positive attributes far outweigh them, making them a nation that continues to inspire and influence the world.。

It is,perhaps, worth while to note that what many people call Americanism are really old English expressions which have lingered in our colonies while they have been lost in our own country. Many people imagine that the term “I guess”, which is so common in America, is purely an American expression, but it was used by John Locke in his work on The Understanding, just as we now use “I think”.
I fear I cannot picture America as altogether an Elysium? Perhaps, from the ordinary standpoint I know but little about the country. I cannot give its latitude or longitude; I cannot compute the value of its dry goods, and I have no very close acquaintance with its politics. These are matters which may not interest you, and they certainly are not interesting to me.

The brainchild of Ruth and Elliot Handler, Barbie was modeled after a German doll, Lilli, a shapely, pretty fashion doll first made in 1955. Made of molded plastic with her hair pulled back into a ponytail, she was available in either 11.5-inch or 7-inch heights. The idea for Barbie originated when Ruth Handler, part owner of the Mattel company with her husband Elliot and family friend Harold Mattson, noticed that her daughter, Barbara, enjoyed playing with adult female dolls more than with baby dolls. She decided, therefore, to create a doll that would allow young girls to envision what they might become as they grew older. Her creation, named in honor of daughter Barbara and backed by Mattel, debuted at the American Toy Fair in New York City in 1959. Although Mattel had been hesitant to risk producing the Barbie doll, Barbie set a new sales record for Mattel after the first year on the market. At a cost of three dollars each, Mattel sold 351,000 dolls during the first year of production, and within ten years, the public had purchased $500 million worth of Barbie products. The first Barbie featured a ponytail hairstyle, black and white zebra-striped bathing suit, open-toed shoes, sunglasses, and earrings, and also featured various accessories and clothing styles created by the fashion designer Charlotte Johnson. Over the years, Barbie has been joined by family and friends, beginning with boyfriend Ken, named after the Handler's son, Kenneth, in 1961; sister Skipper in 1965; and Becky, Barbie's friend, in a wheelchair, in 1997.Over the years, Barbie has undergone various cosmetic alterations, including a change to reflect criticism that Barbie reinforced sexism by representing a young woman with questionable intelligence and a sculpted physique. Over the years, Barbie has appeared as a doctor, UNICEF volunteer, athlete, and businesswoman, and has enjoyed universal appeal as a collector's item.Buffalo NickleThe Buffalo Nickle was firstly designed in 1911. At that time the United States pioneered the development of serious damage to the ecological environment of the buffalo and the the number of it was serious decline. It was reported that the buffalo is found in the New York Central Park Zoo and the buffalo was quiet old when found. The Buffalo Nickel (or Indian Head Nickel) was the design of the US 5 cent coin from1913 to 1938.Although this coin was only minted for 25 years it is still possible to find them in circulation (although its quite rare). On the obverse of the coin it features the profile of an Indian; hence the nickname of the Indian head nickel. The Indian featured on the back is actually a compilation of three prominent Native American Indian chiefs: Iron Tail, Two Moons, and John Big Tree. The buffalo portrayed on the front side of the coin is an American Bison. The Buffalo Nickel is made of 75% copper and 25% nickel and the coin is about 21 mm in diameter.21mmUncle SamUncle Sam is a nationalpersonification of the United States(US), with the first usage of theterm dating from the War of 1812and the first illustration dating from1852. Forty-eight contiguous states lie in central North America between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, bounded on land by Canada to the north and Mexico to the south; Alaska is in the northwest of the continent with Canada to its east, and Hawaii is in the mid-Pacific. The United States is a federal constitutional republic with Washington DC its federal capital.Uncle Sam is not a real person. He was created sometime during the War of 1812 to symbolize the United States of America. Where did the name come from? No one is really sure, but most people think he was named for Samuel Wilson.Samuel Wilson was born in Massachusetts in 1766. He moved to New York, where he became a meat supplier . There, he put meat into barrels to send to United States armies. The barrels of meat were marked with the letters “U.S.”to show that they came from the United States. One story says that the soldiers jokingly called the meat supplier “Uncle Sam”to explain the letters on the barrels. Since the meat came from the American government , when people thought of Uncle Sam they thought of the government.

Stereotypes About Americans: A Reflective ExaminationIn the vast tapestry of global perceptions, stereotypes often emerge as simplified, generalized notions about a particular group of people. When it comes to Americans, these stereotypes can be both amusing and problematic, often oversimplifying a diverse and complex nation. It is essential to acknowledge these stereotypes, critically examine their origins, and strive for a more nuanced understanding of American culture and identity.Individualism and Self-RelianceOne of the most prevalent stereotypes about Americans is their strong sense of individualism and self-reliance. It is often said that Americans value personal freedom and independence above all else, preferring to go it alone rather than rely on others. While there is certainly truth to this to some extent, as the American Dream often embodies the idea of personal success and achievement, it is also a simplification. Americans, like people everywhere, form communities, support each other, and collaborate for common goals. The strength of the American society lies in its ability to balanceindividualism with a sense of community and shared responsibility.Materialism and ConsumerismAnother stereotype often associated with Americans is their love for material possessions and consumption. From Hollywood's portrayal of lavish lifestyles to the global reach of American brands, it's easy to see why this stereotype persists. However, it fails to capture the diversity of American values and lifestyles. While it is true that consumerism plays a significant role in American culture, there is also a growing movement towards sustainability, minimalism, and prioritizing experiences over material goods. Moreover, the American Dream is not solely defined by wealth and possessions; it encompasses aspirations for education, health, and happiness.Optimism and Can-Do AttitudeAmericans are often stereotyped as optimistic and having a "can-do" attitude. This stereotype stems from the country's history of overcoming adversity, from its founding as a nation of immigrants to its role in World War II and beyond. The American spirit of innovation, entrepreneurship, and resilience is indeed admirable, and has contributed immeasurably tohuman progress. However, it is important to recognize that not all Americans share this outlook, and that challenges and setbacks are part of any nation's journey.Cultural Imperialism and Global InfluenceAnother stereotype involves America's perceived cultural imperialism and its global influence. Critics argue that American culture, through media, fast food, and other means, has homogenized the world, erasing cultural diversity. While it is true that American culture has a significant global reach, it is also important to acknowledge the two-way flow of cultural exchange. Many American cultural phenomena, from music to fashion, have been influenced by other cultures. Furthermore, the rise of multiculturalism and globalization has made it easier for people around the world to celebrate and preserve their unique cultural identities.ConclusionStereotypes about Americans, like all stereotypes, are simplistic generalizations that fail to capture the complexity and diversity of a nation. While they may contain elements of truth, they also perpetuate misconceptions and limit our ability to understand and appreciate different cultures. Asglobal citizens, it is our responsibility to challenge stereotypes, seek out diverse perspectives, and foster a more nuanced and empathetic understanding of the world around us.。

1)关于作者的基本情况、写作情况、语言、风格等等;
