Chapter Two - Canada Becomes a Country
When did Canada become a country? July 1, 1867
Advantage
The cost of one government would be less than the cost of one government for each colony; One strong government would be able to make better trade agreements with the United States.
Disadvantage
Confederation would take control away from their colony’s own government;
They wanted to keep their power;
They didn’t think union would improve economic and trade conditions.
What was Canada like before it became a country? British North America
It was the colony of Britain and France.
Seven Year’s War (1756-63)
The British defeated the French forces at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, outside of Quebec. Result: the British kept the French Colony
Eight British colonies
Trading with Canada’s “mother country”
Atlantic colonies: Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland Central colonies: Canada East (Quebec) and Canada West (Ontario)
Pacific colonies: British Columbia and Vancouver Island
Each colony sold its natural resources to Britain.
Britain sold manufactured products to its colonies.
