Next up is the Gobi March, which takes places in the Gobi Desert in China’s Xinjiang Province. A lack of shade and potential sandstorms are among the challenges here. In 2010, a Chinese competitor died of heatstroke. Lin took third place here in 2003. The third race sees runners braving temperatures 50°C as they compete in the Sahara Race in Egypt. Although the daytime is scorching, the temperature drops to a chilling 4°C at night time. Lin admits that he actually didn’t know where he was going at one point halfway through this race, though he still managed to take second place.

Track 22
The final leg is perhaps the most brutal of all. The Last Desert, as it is known, is held in Antarctica. Anyone brave enough to participate in this race is exposed to gale-force blizzards and temperatures that dip to as low as -20°C. As Lin did not have the time or the money to prepare for the event in a suitably frosty climate, he ventured up into Taiwan’s peaks where he trained in shorts and T-shirts. He also packed on five kilograms of weight to guard against the cold. However, even these measures couldn’t stop him from becoming seriously ill at the start of the race. Somehow, he pulled through and came in third.

Track 22
For each leg of the series, competitors must complete a 250kilometer course over a week carrying their own provisions and equipment for the duration. The first leg of the series is the Atacama Crossing in Chile’s Atacama Desert, the driest region in the world. Although the landscape is stunning, the terrain is rugged and the race is run at high altitude, which makes breathing difficult. Lin says he experienced splitting headaches on this course, which he won in 2004.

With the combined results from these four races, Lin was crowned the first 4 Deserts champion in 2006. Not content with this, in 2007, Lin crossed the entire breadth of the Sahara, a journey of nearly 7,000 kilometers, which took 111 days. Running as part of a trio of ultramarathoners, Lin’s exploits were the subject of a documentary called Running the Sahara, narrated by Oscar-winner Matt Damon. In 2011, Lin completed a 10,000kilometer run along the Silk Road from Turkey to China. As with the Sahara run, and most of his races, this accomplishment helped raise money for charities in the region.
