Teaching objectives
By the end of course lectures, students will
(i) gain an understanding of key features of domestic environmental politics in the US and EU, including the role of state actors, the private sector, and civil society in constituting and challenging these politics; (ii) acquire insights on the ways in which these two mega-power are involved in and influence global environmental and related politics; and (iii) obtain a beginning appreciation of three leading theoretical approaches to the study of global environmental governance: World-Systems Theory, Global Environmental Politics/ International Relations, and the Sociology of Networks and Flows.

The rise of the others
In the past 500 years, 3 major power shifts:
☯ 1st: 15th century-end of 18th century, the rise of the west world, the modernization process ☯ 2nd: end of 19th century-20th century, the rise of US as a superpower, dominated during 20th century ☯ 3rd: currently, the rise of the others (including non-state actors)….a new world order emerged - The biggest oil refinery is in India - The biggest manufacturers are in China - The biggest movies industry is Bollywood, not Hollywood - The world top 10 department stores, 2 in China, only 1 in US - … State (and environmental states) are under pressure!

Two types of readings will be offered:
1. The required reading is a set of texts put together as a course reader, which will be downloadable before the lecture starts. The required reading should be read before each lecture and should be used for writing commentaries. 2. The recommended reading is supplemental literature on particular topics. All the texts will be made available for downloading in:
