UNIT 5TEXTA miserable and merry Christmas? How could it be?A Miserable, Merry ChristmasChristmas was coming. I wanted a pony. To make sure that my parents understood, I declared that I wanted noting else."Nothing but a pony?" my father asked."Nothing," I said."Not even a pair of high boots?"That was hard. I did want boots, but I stuck to the pony. "No, not even boots.""Nor candy? There ought to be something to fill your stocking with, and Santa Claus can't put a pony into a stocking,"That was true, and he couldn't lead a pony down the chimney either . But no. "All I want is a pony," I said. "If I can't have a pony, give me nothing, nothing."On Christmas Eve I hung up my stocking along with my sisters. The next morning my sisters and I woke up at six. Then we raced downstairs to the fireplace. And there they were, the gifts, all sorts of wonderful things, mixed-up piles of presents. Only my stocking was empty; it hung limp; not a thing in it; and under and around it -- nothing. My sisters had knelt down, each by her pile of gifts; they were crying with delight, till they looked up and saw me standing there looking so miserable. They came over to me and felt my stocking: nothing.I don't remember whether I cried at that moment, but my sisters did. They ran with me back to my bed, and there we all cried till I became indignant. That helped some. I got up, dressed, and driving my sisters away, I went out alone into the stable, and there, all by myself, I wept. My mother came out to me and she tried to comfort me. But I wanted no comfort. She left me and went on into the house with sharp words for my father. My sisters came to me, and I was rude. I ran away from them. I went around to the front of the house, sat down on the steps, and, the crying over, I ached. I was wronged, I was hurt. And my father must have been hurt, too, a little. I saw him looking out of the window. He was watching me or something for an hour or two, drawing back the curtain so little lest I catch him, but I saw his face, and I think I can see now the anxiety upon on it, the worried impatience. After an hour or two, I caught sight of a man riding a pony down the street, a pony and a brand-new saddle; the most beautiful saddle I ever saw, and it was a boy's saddle. And the pony! As he drew near, I saw that the pony was really a small horse, with a black mane and tail, and one white foot and a white star on his forehead. For such a horse as that I would have given anything. But the man came along, reading the numbers on the houses, and, as my hopes -- my impossible hopes -- rose, he looked at our door and passed by, he and the pony, and the saddle. Too much, I fell upon the steps and broke into tears. Suddenly I heard a voice."Say, kid," it said, "do you know a boy named Lennie Steffens?"I looked up. It was the man on the pony, back again."Yes," I spluttered through my tears. "That's me.""Well," he said, "then this is your horse. I've been looking all over for you and your house. Why don't you put your number where it can be seen?""Get down," I said, running out to him. I wanted to ride.He went on saying something about "ought to have got here at seven o'clock, but--"I hardly heard, I could scarcely wait. I was so happy, so thrilled. I rode off up the street. Sucha beautiful pony. And mine! After a while I turned and trotted back to the stable. There was the family, father, mother, sisters, all working for me, all happy. They had been putting in place the tools of my new business: currycomb, brush, pitchfork -- everything, and there was hay in the loft. But that Christmas, which my father had planned so carefully, was it the best or the worst I ever knew? He often asked me that; I never could answer as a boy. I think now that it was both. It covered the whole distance from broken-hearted misery to bursting happiness -- too fast, A grown-up could hardly have stood it.NEW WORDSmiserablea. causing unhappiness; very unhappy 悲惨的merrya. cheerful, full of lively happiness, fun, etc. 欢乐的,愉快的ponyn. a small horse 矮种马;小马bootn. 长统靴candyn. 《全新版大学进阶英语视听说教程第1册》Unit 5 HomesPART II LISTENING AND SPEAKINGLESSON A FOUR SIMILAR APARTMENTSLISTENINGSCRIPTThe four families in these photos live in Seoul, Korea, in the same building. The apartments are similar, but each family’s home is a little different.1. The family in apartment one has a sofa in the living room. There’s a lamp next to the sofa.Across from it is a TV. This family loves to travel, and there are photos of their trips together near the TV.2. In apartment two, there is a TV on a small cabinet. Near the TV, there are three trophies. Thefather is on a bowling team, and these are his. His children play sports, too.3. Apartment three is very different from the others. There’s no rug on the floor and there areblinds—not curtains—on the glass door.4. The family in apartment four is sitting on the sofa. The glass door is open. Their apartment ison a top floor in the building. There’s a nice view and you can see a lot of Seoul from the balcony.1. a little different有些不同2. next to在……旁边;紧邻3. The father is on a bowling team …这家的父亲是保龄球队的成员4. blinds百叶窗5. from the balcony从阳台上CONVERSATIONScriptA: Where do you live?B: I live in an apartment in Gangnam, a neighborhood in Seoul.A: What’s it like?B: It has a large living room, two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a bathroom.A: Sounds like a nice place.B: Yeah, it is, but it’s a long way from my school.LESSON B Living SmallListening 1ScriptLiving SmallToday, 50 percent of the people on Earth live in cities. By 2030, it will be 60 percent. With more people in cities, there is less space, and housing costs more. What can we do? Here’s an idea.Container HousingThe city of Amsterdam is using old shipping containers as housing for students and other people. The containers are small—30 square meters (three hundred twenty square feet)—but they are comfortable. There is space for a living area, bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom. These houses are also inexpensive: only a few thousand dollars to buy. Today, the containers are used around the world as homes and student dormitories, as well as shops, offices, and hotels.Tiny HousesIn the U.S., Jay Shafer makes tiny houses for people. The smallest is only 9 square meters (98 square feet). The houses are small, but they have everything you need. On the first floor, there is a kitchen, a living area, and a bathroom. On the second floor is a bedroom. It is big enough for two people. The houses are also inexpensive. Most are $15,000.1. Container Housing集装箱房屋2. Tiny Houses微型房屋Listening 2ScriptM1: I go to school in Amsterdam and I need some place to live. Container homes are comfortable and inexpensive. They’re perfect for students.F1: I don’t know ... I know container apartments are a good idea, but I think they’re ugly. They look like big boxes.M2: A tiny house is perfect for one or two people, but I have a family of four. They’re just too small.F2: Tiny houses are inexpensive to make and buy so you save money. Also, they’re small so you use less water and energy. They’re good for people and the Earth.1.some place to live一个住的地方2. a family of four一家四口人3.save money省钱LISTENING SKILLSScript1) Laura is one of the top students in Grade One.2) Ted likes to sing English pop songs.3) Listening is not a big problem for me.4) Frank can speak six languages fluently.5) I’d like to read novels and short stories in English.6) Bob’s strong local accent makes it difficult for us to understand him.1. one of the top students优秀学生之一2. local accent当地口音PART III VIDEO ECO-FRIENDLY HOMESCRIPTNarrator:This is the Cohen’s home. It’s a three-bedroom house in a suburb in the United States. It’s a nice area, but there is a problem with this house: it uses a lot of energy. But this isn’t surprising. Houses and buildings use forty percent of all the energy in the United States. And many homes waste a lot of energy.Amory Lovins teaches people to save energy in their homes.Today, he is visiting the Cohen’s house. Lovins walks around the house, and he finds different problems. There’s a problem with the heater in one room, and the freezer in the kitchen. Lovins:“Oh, what have we here...?”Narrator:We don’t have to use a lot of electricity in our homes, says Lovins. There are simple ways to save energy. It’s surprising; homes waste a lot of energy, even while you sleep. To save energy in your home, unplug electronics when you’re not using them.Lovins:“Do you see that little red light down in the corner?”Narrator:Now, the TV is off, but it’s still using energy because it’s plugged in. The Cohens pay sixty dollars every year for this extra energy. The Cohen family has lots of electronics. They’re all plugged in. So they’re always using energy.Lovins lives in Aspen, Colorado, in the mountains. His house is very eco-friendly. All of the home’s electricity comes from solar panels. Some days, it’s below -40 degrees Celsius here. But Lovins’ house is warm, thanks to the solar panels. In fact, Lovins’whole house uses very little energy—only 120 watts. That’s a little more energy than you need to turn on one light bulb. It’s a very eco-friendly home.1. a three-bedroom house一幢有三间卧室的房子2.unplug electronics拔出电器的电源插头3.plug in插上电源的插头4.thanks to幸亏;由于。

This title produced an extraordinary sequence of mental images. Vivid memories came flooding back of a night in Belleville when all of us were seated around the supper table — Uncle Allen, my mother, Uncle Charlie, Doris, Uncle Hal — and Aunt Pat served spaghetti for supper. Spaghetti was still a little known foreign dish in those days. Neither Doris nor I had ever eaten spaghetti, and none of the adults had enough experience to be good at it. All the good humor of Uncle Allen's house reawoke in my mind as I recalled the laughing arguments we had that night about the socially respectable method for moving spaghetti from plate to mouth. Suddenly I wanted to write about that, about the warmth and good feeling of it, but I wanted to put it down simply for my own joy, not for Mr. Fleagle. It was a moment I wanted to recapture and hold for myself. I wanted to relive the pleasure of that evening. To write it as I wanted, however, would violate all the rules of formal composition I'd learned in school, and Mr. Fleagle would surely give it a failing grade. Never mind. I would write something else for Mr. Fleagle after I had written this thing for myself. When I finished it the night was half gone and there was no time left to compose a proper, respectable essay for Mr. Fleagle. There was no choice next morning but to turn in my tale of the Belleville supper. Two days passed before Mr. Fleagle returned the graded papers, and he returned everyone's but mine. I was preparing myself for a command to report to Mr. Fleagle immediately after school for discipline when I saw him lift my paper from his desk and knock for the class's attention.

Unit 1 Growing UPⅡPart Text A Writing for MyselfWhen we are writing we are often told to keep our readers in mind, to shape what we say to fit their tastes and interests. But there is one reader in particular who should not be forgotten. Can you guess who? Russell Baker surprised himself and everyone else when he discovered the answer.
Writing for MyselfRussell Baker 1 The idea of becoming a writer had come to me off and on since my childhood in Belleville, but it wasn't until my third year in high school that the possibility took hold. Until then I've been bored by everything associated with English courses. I found English grammar dull and difficult. I hated the assignments to turn out long, lifeless paragraphs that were agony for teachers to read and for me to write.为自己而写拉塞尔·贝克从孩提时代,我还住在贝尔维尔时,我的脑子里就断断续续地转着当作家的念头,但直等到我高中三年级,这一想法才有了实现的可能。

How to Be True to Yourself1.My grandparents believed you were either honest or you weren’t. There wasno in-between. They had a simple motto hanging on their living-room wall,“Life is like a field of newly fallen snow; where I choose to walk every step will show.”They didn’t have to talk about it — they demonstrated the motto by the way they lived.2. They understood instinctively that integrity means having a personalstandard of morality and ethics that does not sell out to expediency and that is not relative to the situation at hand. Integrity is an inner standard for judging your behavior. Unfortunately, integrity is in short supply today —and getting scarcer. But it is the real bottom line in every area of society. And it is something we must demand of ourselves.3. A good test for this value is to look at what I call the Integrity Triad, which consists of three key principles:4. Stand firmly for your conviction s in the face of personal pressure. There’sa story told about a surgical nurse’s fir st day on the medical team at awell-known hospital. She was responsible for ensuring that all instruments and materials were accounted for during an abdominal operation. The nurse said to the surgeon, “You’ve only removed 11 sponges, and we used 12. We ne ed to find the last one.”5.“I removed them all,” the doctor declared. “We’ll close now.”6.“You can’t do that, sir,” objected the rook ie nurse, “Think of thepatient.”7. Smiling, the surgeon lifted his foot and showed the nurse the 12th sponge.“You’ll do just fine in this or any other hospital,” he told her.8.When you know you are right, you can’t back down.9. Always give others credit that is rightfully theirs.Don’t be afraid ofthose who might have a better idea or who might even be smarter than you are.10. David Ogilvy, founder of the advertising firm Ogilvy & Mather, made thispoint clear to his newly-appointed office heads by sending each a Russian nesting doll with five progressively smaller figures inside.11. His message was contained in the smallest doll,“If each of us hires peoplewho are smaller than we are, we shall become a company of dwarfs. But if each of us hires people who are bigger than we are, Ogilvy & Mather will become a company of giants.” And that is precisely what the company became — one of the largest and most respected advertising organizations in the world.12. Be honest and open about what you really are. People who lack genuine corevalues rely on external factors — their looks or status — in order to feel good about themselves. Inevitably they will do everything they can to preserve this façade, but they will do very little to develop their inner value and personal growth.13.So be yourself. Don’t engage in a personal cover-up of areas that areunpleasing in your life. When it’s tough, do it tough. In other words, face reality and be adult in our responses to life’s challenges.14. Self-respect and a clear conscience are powerful components of integrityand are the basis for enriching your relationships with others.15.Integrity means you do what you do because it’s right and not justfashionable or politically correct. A life of principle, of not succumbing to the seductive sirens of an easy morality, will always win the day. It will take you forward into the 21st century without having to check your tracks in a rearview mirror. My grandparents taught me that.Paragraphs 1-2Words and Expressions1. demonstrate vt.1) show; make clear. These figures clearly demonstrate the size of the economic problem facing the country.Research has demonstrated that babies can recognize their mother’s voice very soon after birth.2) make a public expression that you are not satisfied about something, especiallyby marching orhaving a meeting. Thousands of people gathered to demonstrate against the new proposals.成千上万的人一起游行示威反对新提议。

When we are writing we are often told to keep our readers in mind, to shape what we say to fit their tastes and interests. But there is one reader in particular who should not be forgotten. Can you guess who? Russell Baker surprised himself and everyone else when he discovered the answer.我们写作时常常被告诫,脑子里要有读者,笔者所云一定要符合读者的口味和兴趣。

Writing for MyselfRussell Baker 1 The idea of becoming a writer had come to me off and on since my childhood in Belleville, but it wasn't until my third year in high school that the possibility took hold. Until then I've been bored by everything associated with English courses. I found English grammar dull and difficult.I hated the assignments to turn out long, lifeless paragraphs that were agony for teachers to read and for me to write.为自己而写拉塞尔·贝克从孩提时代,我还住在贝尔维尔时,我的脑子里就断断续续地转着当作家的念头,但直等到我高中三年级,这一想法才有了实现的可能。

Valentine's Day or Saint Valentine's Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14. In the America and Europe, it is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine's cards, presenting flowers, or offering confectionery. The holiday is named after two among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine.

Are you any good at this? Sometimes it is easy to get it wrong.A VALENTINE STORYDoug BellJohn Blanchard stood up from the bench, straightened his Army uniform, and studied the crowd of people making their way through Grand Central Station. He looked for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn't, the girl with the rose. His interest in her had begun twelve months before in a Florida library. Taking a book off the shelf he soon found himself absorbed, not by the words of the book, but by the notes penciled in the margin. The soft handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and insightful mind.In the front of the book, he discovered the previous owner's name, Miss Hollis Maynell. With time and effort he located her address. She lived in New York City. He wrote her a letter introducing himself and inviting her to correspond. The next day he was shipped overseas for service inWorld War II.During the next year the two grew to know each other through the mail. Each letter was a seed falling on a fertile heart. A romance was budding. Blanchard requested a photograph, but she refused. She explained: "If your feeling for me has any reality, any honest basis, what I look like won't matter. Suppose I'm beautiful. I'd always be haunted by the feeling that you had been taking a chance on just that, and that kind of love would disgust me. Suppose I'm plain (and you must admit that this is more likely). Then I'd always fear that you were going on writing to me only because you were lonely and had no one else. No, don't ask for my picture. When you come to New York, you shall see me and then you shall make your decison. Remember, both of us are free to stop or to go on after that —whichever we choose..."When the day finally came for him to return from Europe, they scheduled their first meeting — 7:00 p.m. at Grand Central Station, New York. "You'll recognize me," she wrote, "by the red rose I'll be wearing on my lapel." So, at 7:00 p.m. he was in the station looking for a girl who had filled such a special place in his life for the past 12 months, a girl he had never seen, yet whose written words had been with him and sustained him unfailingly.I'll let Mr. Blanchard tell you what happened:A young woman was coming toward me, her figure long and slim. Her golden hair lay back in curls from her delicate ears; her eyes were blue as flowers. Her lips and chin had a gentle firmness, and in her pale green suit she was like springtime come alive.I started toward her, entirely forgetting to notice that she was not wearing a rose.As I moved, a small, provocative smile curved her lips. "Going my way, sailor?" she murmured. Almost uncontrollably I made one step closer to her, and then I saw Hollis Maynell. She was standing almost directly behind the girl. A woman well past 40, she had graying hair pinned up under a worn hat.She was more than a little overweight, her thick-ankled feet thrust into low-heeled shoes. The girl in the green suit was walking quickly away. I felt as though I was split in two, so keen was my desire to follow her, and yet so deep was my longing for the woman whose spirit had truly companioned me and upheld my own.And there she stood. Her pale, round face was gentle and sensible, her gray eyes had a warm and kindly glow. I did not hesitate. My fingers gripped the small worn blue leather copy of the book that was to identify me to her. This would not be love, but it would be something precious, something perhaps even better than love, a friendship for which I had been and must ever be grateful.I squared my shoulders and saluted and held out the book to the woman, even though while I spoke I felt choked by the bitterness of my disappointment. "I'm Lieutenant John Blanchard, and you must be Miss Maynell. I am so glad you could meet me; may I take you to dinner?" The woman's face broadened into a smile. "I don't know what this is about, son," she answered, "but the young lady in the green suit who just went by, she begged me to wear this rose on my coat. And she said if you were to ask me out to dinner, I should go and tell you that she is waiting for you in the big restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of test!"It's not difficult to understand and admire Miss Maynell's wisdom. The true nature of a heart is seen in its response to the unattractive.
