There are so many people under the unbearably high pressure in China. Heavy work demands and intense competition pile enormous pressure on the individuals who desperately try to pursue a more well-paid salary and push for a higher position. For students, exam pressure makes them overburdened and overwhelmed. Stress is a personalized phenomenon but confronts everyone at different degrees. This phenomenon divides people. Some have a depressing and gloomy attitude toward the physical and mental strain. So stress is always blamed for someone's mental disorder, violence and even suicide. In contrast to their negatively reacting to stress, others may face up to the mounting pressure and keep a excellent mood. How to properly and effectively cope with the huge pressure? First, people under the tremendous pressure can select a proper way to relax, such as pampering themselves with a long hot bath and immersing themselves in the favorite CD. Repetitive tasks and no break will propel people to pay a hefty health price. Second, the over-high expectations leading to the strong strain must be lowered. Third, a chat with close friends is a favorably good way. Talking to them will alleviate enormous pressure.2. Psychological Problems among College StudentsThere is no denying the fact that psychological problems are becoming serious among college students. Reports are often heard that some collegians committed suicide or murdered their roommates. Typical examples include the case of a Chinese student named Ma Jiajue and that of a Korean student studying in the U.S.A number of factors may account for these young men and women’s troubles, but the following might the critical ones. First, as young adults, most of them are at the stage of personality formation and are quite sensitive to their surroundings. Secondly, they are at a critical point of personal development and are facing pressure from various aspects: love, academy, job-seeking and so on. To make things worse, most of them are living off home and without their parents care and supervision. In view of the seriousness of the problem, effective measures must be taken before things get worse. First, it is essential that the channel of communication be kept open among students, between students and their superintendents as well asbetween students and their parents. Besides, psychological counseling should be enhanced and rendered to problem students in time. Only with these measures taken can we expect sound growth of college students3.How to improve students’ mental health1)大学生的心理健康十分重要2)因此,学校可以3)我们自己应当分析:题目分析学生的心理健康是近年来被热议的话题之一,属于经典的问题解决型,故不外乎采用举例子,作比较分类别列数字打比方等方式讨论,参考范文Students mental health has been playing an increasingly important role in our day-to-day life. Indeed, it is widely accepted that it has gained growing popularity among people in all walks of life. Obviously, it is necessary that effective actions should be taken to prevent such problems.Authorities in universities play a critical role in the situation. To begin with, colleges or universities can provide chances for the young men to ease their attention. What’s more, teachers may communicate with students frequently and find the potential threats among them in advance. Besides, specialists in this field are to be required to make full preparation for cases in time. Facing the crisis, experts can deal with it in a professional way, which means they have more or better opportunities to save us than othersFrom the factors mentioned above, we may safely draw the conclusion that we can free ourselves from mental illness by taking certain precautions. For example,if you have pains or puzzles in mind, finding a friend to express these is a good way to release pressure. Certainly, there is little doubt that further attention will be paid to the issue.New words and expressions:potential threats Reading ReferenceMourners at a memorial in Blacksburg, Virginia, Monday at Virginia Tech. But other Americans also honored the thirty-two students and teachers. Some of the victims at the university in Blacksburg were from other countries. The attack by a student, Cho Seung-hui, who also killed himself, was the deadliest shooting in modern American history. The tragedy brought back memories of other school shootings, including what had been the worst. In fact, Friday was the eighth anniversary of the attack at Columbine High School in Colorado. Two young men killed twelve other students and one teacher, and themselves.Often, when a shooting captures national attention, debate about gun control follows. This week some of the calls to restart that debate came from political leaders in other countries.Australian Prime Minister John Howard spoke of the gun culture in the United States. He noted that his own country took action to limit the availability of guns after a man killed thirty-five people in Tasmania eleven years ago.British Home Office minister Tony McNulty studied at Virginia Tech. If the tragedy starts a serious debate on gun laws, he says, then some good may come from it.The White House said Friday that President Bush has ordered federal officials to study issues raised by the shooting. These include how to deal with people whose mental health problems can make them a danger. On Monday, a spokeswoman said the president believes that people have a right to arms, but all laws must be followed. The Second Amendment to the Constitution says: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."Gun laws are not the only issue. Others involve privacy laws and disability rights that protect people with mental disorders.Cho Seung-hui was born in South Korea but lived most of his life in the United States. He was known at Virginia Tech as a troubled person. He studied English and some of his writings were so violent they scared other students and his professors. But schools may worry about legal action if they expel a student who has not made direct threats. Virginia Tech officials say they did what they could within the law.The shooter was armed with two handguns that he recently bought after passing a criminal history check. There are federal laws but each state also has its own laws on buying and selling guns. Virginia is among the states with fewer restrictions than others. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence says an estimated thirty-nine percent of American homes have a gun. The campaign points to national injury reports from two thousand four, the most recent year available. There were almost thirty thousand gun-related deaths. About forty percent were murders. Most of the others were suicides or accidents.。

Psychologically: Old people in Western countries are generally considered useless, a burden on their families and on the public purse. They are hardly held in respect. On the other hand, most of them, so used to focusing on work, simply do not know how to relax or pursue another interest now that they have time to do so. They feel they “should” be working and contributing , because work was where they were respected and their skills recognized. As retired people, their self-confidence is diminished. The

Title: The Importance of Cross-cultural Communication ina Globalized WorldIn our increasingly globalized world, cross-cultural communication plays a pivotal role in fostering understanding and cooperation among people from diverse cultural backgrounds. It has become an essential skill, both in personal and professional contexts, making it crucial to embrace and adapt to cultural differences. This essay will explore the significance of cross-cultural communication and offer insights on how to enhance this important skill. To begin with, cross-cultural communication is essential for developing empathy and respect towards different cultures. When individuals engage in conversations and interactionswith people from other cultures, they become more aware ofthe nuances and uniqueness of each culture. This promotestolerance and a more inclusive mindset, as individualsrealize that their own cultural beliefs and practices arejust one part of a larger global tapestry. As a result, misunderstandings and stereotypes decrease, and empathy and mutual respect increase, fostering harmony among diverse groups. Moreover, effective cross-cultural communication is pivotal for successful international business transactions. As companies expand their operations globally, it is crucial for employees to be able to navigate cultural differences and adapt their communication styles accordingly. By understanding the cultural etiquette, norms, and values of their international partners or clients, individuals canbuild trust, establish strong relationships, and avoid potential conflicts. This is particularly important in negotiations, where miscommunication or culturalinsensitivity can hinder agreements and hinder long-term business relationships. In addition, cross-cultural communication is vital for social integration and international cooperation. With increased migration and the rise of multinational communities, interactions between individuals from different cultural backgrounds have become commonplace. To ensure social cohesion, effective communication is necessary to bridge the gaps between cultures, facilitate integration, and buildstrong alliances. Through open dialogue and active listening, individuals can learn from one another, celebrate cultural diversity, and foster a sense of unity and belonging. To enhance cross-cultural communication skills, several strategies can be employed. Firstly, individuals should cultivate curiosity and an open-minded attitude towards other cultures. This means having a genuine interest in learning about different customs, traditions, and perspectives, which can be achieved through reading, traveling, or engaging in cultural exchange programs. Furthermore, individuals should develop intercultural competence by actively seekingopportunities to engage with people from diverse backgrounds. This can be done through participating in multicultural events or joining international organizations. By immersing oneself in different cultures and building relationships with people from various backgrounds, individuals can gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for cultural differences. In conclusion, in a globalized world, cross-cultural communication is more important than ever before. It promotes understanding, empathy, and respect among people from diverse backgrounds, facilitates successful business transactions, fosters social integration, and encourages international cooperation. By embracing cultural differences and developing effective cross-cultural communication skills, individuals can contribute to a more harmonious and interconnected world. Therefore, it is crucial to prioritize and invest in initiatives that promote and enhance cross-cultural communication in both personal and professional settings.。

The word bomb is a slang expression that is too casual to go with the subject, and the sentence can be revised into: The violin virtuoso’s performance on the cello was a big failure. The revised short paragraph: The author has made a lifetime’s study of film history, and the knowledge she has accumulated is tempered by a fine sense of judgment. She devotes a whole chapter to an analysis of horror films. These films, according to her, do much more than just frighten us; they enable us to forget our worries.Style and audienceSuggested answers to the questionsThe expected reader of Excerpt 1 is a pal of the person who leaves the note, so the language is colloquial. The reader of Excerpt 2 does not have an intimate relationship with the writer of the note. They might be business associates, for example. The language stands somewhere between formal and informal but more on the formal side.Reference for the Classroom Activities1.If there is an accident or incident that may be covered by this policy, notify us in writing as soon as possible. Y ou can give tis notice to any of our authorized agents.2.(omitted)3.The first excerpt is colloquial and the two persons may be friends orcolleagues. The second excerpt is rather formal and the two persons may be colleagues. The third is the most formal. Actually it is taken from a report and the writer may be the head of the department.Point of viewRevised version 1When people read about a natural disaster in another country, it hardly affects them. Of course, they feel bad and upset when people get killed. But as these disasters happen thousands of miles away from them and because they don’t affect their own life, they are not traumatized by them. If a flood killed their own close friends, they would be more emotionally upset.Revised version 2When we read about a natural disaster in another country, it hardly affects us. Of course, we feel bad and upset when people get killed. But as these disasters happen thousands of miles away from us and because they don’t affect our own life, we are not traumatized by them. If a flood killed our close friends, we would be more emotionally upset.Notice while the first version is comfortable and respectable, the second one involves the audience more effectively and directly because of the use of the pronoun we. The pronoun you can also achieve the same effect in this paragraph.Part IV WritingSample 1 Suggested answer to the exerciseSept.8Dear Aunt Jenny,Thank you so much for the lovely robot dog you give me. It is just what I’ve dreamed of for ages. Y ou really know me. Thanks again for the wonderful gift.Y ours,RoseSample 2 Suggested answer to the exerciseSept. 12Lucy,I got a ticket for you to the Arts Festival on Sept. 18 at Yifu Auditorium, as we have discussed before. I’ll arrange for a car to bring you here at 4:00 p.m. Give me a ring and tell me if you are coming or not. Thanks.JennyPart V Follow-up Exercises1.1)In this excerpt, Liza’s style is all but appropriate for the occasion. At the beginning, she chooses a formal and affected style but later slides to colloquial and finally slang expressions. The other characters at the scene use general and colloquial vocabulary that is appropriate for the context.2) No. Here the obvious switch from a formal to a highly colloquialstyle shows Liza in a transitional stage. Instead, we must steadily increase it.4. Reference version: Women’s RightsIn feudal China, women had low social status, and were regarded as inferior to men. Thanks to the women’s liberation movement, women have achieved equal status with men, which is established by the law. But in fact, they still can’t enjoy equal rights with men.At home, wives are expected to do all the housework, which is obviously unfair. Husban and wife should share the housework and family responsibilities. But in some families husbands usually get angry when they find the cleaning or cooking unfinished by their wives. One can’t help wondering why they don’t do it by themselves.I think women should be spiritually and financially independent if they want real equality. In order to do that, they have to learn as much as men so as to find a good job. Appearance is no longer important to women. It is their ability that can bring them a good job rather thantheir appearance. So I think the best way for women to win more rights is to receive good education.5.1)me2) who 3)I 4)me/myself 5)me 6)each other’s 7)who 8)us9)whom 10)some 11)one’s 12)his 13)his 14)his, his6. 1) We are all born into this world as equals, but for various reasons, not all of us are treated as equals.
If you go , I’ll go.
My grandmother goes to the supermarket for grocery with a shopping bag.
He ran out of the classroom, crying.
