What makes a lady lady?
As we know, Eliza Doolittle, the heroine in My Fair Lady , was a flower girl who is always wandering and peddling around at a common corner in London. Her life was entirely changed when one day she was told detected by a gentleman-look linguist in pouring rain. What Eliza decided to do and how they got along with each other not only make the film full of fun but also make the audience ponder deeply.
“What’ll become of her when you’ve finished teaching her?You must look ahead a little , Sir” Mr Higgins, the phonetician, meant to send Eliza back to the gutter just after the two-month-exercise whatever the result would be. Actually, what Mrs Pierce noticed at the beginning of Eliza’s arrival haven’t impressed me a lot until the latter scene was shown. Eliza wanted to change her life career through improving her poor pronunciation while Mr Higgins just regarded her as a bet with his friend Colonel Pickering. Higgins cared about his wager even more than the girl’s delicacy. We can see how deliciously low the woman is in the male’s mind. However, Eliza’s determination to be a lady assistance in the flower shop kept herself go on practicing. And her patience to confront with the unequal treatments as well as her persistence to put up with the stringent training of accent. That’s the first actor that make her a lady.
“What’s a five pound note to you and what’s Eliza to me.” I wonder how many people will get upset that Eliza’s father equaled her daughter to a five pound note. It was a fact that females were materialized during the antique period. This scene can be easily associated to that one which Mr Doolittle asked Eliza for money in the beginning at the dirty market. Negligently speaking, her father considered herself as an ATM who can afford him to drink and pay bills for his girlfriends. On her way to become a duchess, she met more incredible experience that make her into dilemma. But she said no to these unreasonable situation in her own way. For example, Eliza refused to give any more money to her father and urged him to go away from her life and she rejected the chasing from Freddy, the handsome and wealthy gentleman at the party. Her bravery to revolt her unsatisfaction make herself not only a lady cultivated for pronunciation but also a lady with her own soul to live happily. This’s the second factor that make her a lady.
“There will be spring without you every year. England still will be here without you. There will be fruit on the tree and a shore by the sea. There will be crumpets and tea without you. Art and music will thrive without you. Somehow Keats will survive without you. And there still be rain on the plain down in Spain. They can still rule the land without you. Winter Castle will stand without you. And without much ado we can all muddle through without you. Without the pulling it the tide comes in. Without your thrilling it the earth can spin. Without your pushing them the clouds roll by. If they can do without you, Ducky So do I.” There’re several words that make me can’t help cheering for Eliza and this is one of them. Having known about and suffered from Professor’s neglect, she left 27A Wimpole Street. Instead of getting back into her little market corner, she opted to stand up and shine out. Though what Eliza said would just become what she had said, she did shout out what she wanted. Let’s say that it’s the optimism that enables her a real lady. Her never giving in to darkness and the authority stands the most significant situation.
