My husband kissed me goodbye, stroked the baby’s cheek and then rushed out of the door, into his busy day. With the cold of the morning fading, I fed my baby and it fell fast asleep. Usually I would place it in bed and quickly have the house somewhat in 41 .
This morning, however, I stayed seated, just 42 , with the baby in my arms. The thoughts ran into 43 of the mornings with my husband, a father rushing out of the door to meet the obligations of life. It was only a small jump to thoughts of my own father.
My mother passed away when I was ten, and as I looked back , I could see how much of a family man my dad was. He went to work every morning and returned to his family every evening. He provided food, clothing, warmth, and 44 . He was a faithful father.
Setting the baby down, I dialed the familiar number. I had just realized the 45 of the ordinary—the daily life going on around us that we often 46 for granted, and that it needed to be 47 .
“Hi, Dad.”I said, 48 tears.
“Hey, Bud. How are you?” 49 was in his voice.
“Fine, I’m just calling to say…thank you.”I got it out before my throat 50 too much for me to speak.
“What for?”
“For get ting up and going to work every morning of my life. Now that I have my own child and I see my husband doing the same, I just wanted to thank you for being 51 .”
I don’t remember much of the rest of the call, 52 that moment of revelation (显露) about my father, I will never forget. There are those who are known for their heroic deeds, and also those who are known for their fortunes and fame, but it is the 53 everyday fathers who are the true heroes. I’m thankful that my father was one of them.

People in Poland take their pleasure seriously. They like to have goals even when they have free time. During the summer, people start work very early in the morning so that they can finish early and enjoy a 54 afternoon. It
is difficult to imagine Polish people walking 55 in the countryside, though they might go to pick wild fruit, visit a place of historical importance, or walk 20 km as a training 56 . They are often admired for their enjoyment of the arts. All parks are beautifully 57 and are for the use and enjoyment of the public. Quite ordinary people will talk with obvious delight about 58 . There is nearly always a crowd at the door of the theater asking for 59 tickets. People in Poland now have far more leisure time and more money than ever before. It is therefore possible for them to spend their weekends doing many new things. Many people now have over 20 days of vacation a year. My husband and I had just opened up a pet sitting business earlier that year. Our customers had slowly risen from three to thirty a month. We were busy through those hot summer months, driving between visits. Our services were strictly held at the pet owner’s home. It w as almost too busy for the two of us, but we were making good money!
We asked pet owners new to our services to phone two weeks ahead so we had enough time to meet the owners and pets at their homes and make any following meetings before the owner leaves.
One day, we decided to take on a new customer just two days before they would leave. We met the family, filled in a form, and spent some time with their dog, Hercules. He playfully jumped on us and touched our hands and arms using his tongue. The family laughed as he did this, showing us that he was very loving.
Two days later I appeared at the house, alone. I came up to Hercules and said hello happily. I filled up his water bowl and cleaned any messes he made. Meanwhile, he was so lovely sitting beside. I thought this would be the good picture to send to the owners, a usual service. After the light and“click”sound went off, Hercules rushed at me. I didn’t know what had just happened until I noticed the drops of blood. I ran out and did the only thing—calling my husband.
Then I went to neighbors for help. My husband arrived after ten minutes. The helpful neighbor and my husband led Hercules back into his pen(圈). Then my husband and I took off to the hospital.
I must have looked like I was shot when I walked into the hospital. The nurses quickly moved me to a room. I asked the doctor in a weak but playful manner,“Am I going to die?” He replied,“Finally.”

Now many young people are traveling around the world on their own, not because they have no one to travel with, but because they prefer to go alone.
Kristina Wegscheider from California first traveled alone when she was at college and believes that it is something everyone should do at least once in their life.“I t opens up your mind to new things and pushes you out of your comfort zone.”Wegscheider has visited 46 countries covering all seven continents.
In foreign countries, with no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill, or lend you money if your wallet is stolen, it is challenging. This is what drives young people to travel alone. It is seen as character building and a chance to prove that they can make it on their own.
Chris Richardson decided to leave his sales job in Australia to go traveling last year. He set up a website, The Aussie Nomad, to document his adventures. He says he wished he had traveled alone earlier.“The people you meet, the places you visit, or the things you do, everything is up to you and it forces you to grow as a person,”said the 30-year-old man.
Richardson describes traveling alone like“a shot in the arm”, which“makes you a more confident person that is ready to deal with anything.”He said,“The feeling of having conquered something on my own is a major part of what drive s me each day when I’m dealing with a difficult task.”“I walk around with my head up because I know deep down inside that nothing is impossible if you try.”

in silence can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness.”

Modern Japan is proud of many technological wonders: robot dogs that run and bark, creative household appliances that make everyday life easier, and computers that make complex problems almost childishly simple. But when it comes to which invention is the best, the Japanese may not be thinking with their heads or their hearts, but their stomachs. They named instant noodles the best invention of the 20th century. As for life-changing technology, karaoke came in at No.2.
The admittedly non-scientific survey by the Fuji Research Institute attached to Tokyo University asked 2,000 adults in the Tokyo region to rate(评价) the greatest inventions of the 20th century in three categories: manufactured goods, culture and technology. Respondents were asked to take into consideration worldwide acceptance of the various customs and inventions. An astonishing number of 692 placed instant noodles, an Japanese“invention”in 1958, at the top of the list. Instant noodles went into commercial production in 1971, and almost 50 billion cups are now consumed each year worldwide. In 1996, a giant billboard of a steaming cup of noodles was set up above Times Square in New York City, a proud declaration that the place instant noodles has earned in world cuisine(烹饪).
Headphone stereo sets, TV video games, CDs and cameras came in order respectively. They were ranked behind instant noodles and off-key howling. Known as“Poketto Monsters”(“Pocket Monsters”) in Japan, Pikachu and his popular little friends came in at No. 8. In view of practicality, automobile-related technology came in at No.9—automobiles themselves, invented overseas, were not ranked at all. Sushi, perhaps the original fast food in Japan, rounded out the top list.
While the Fuji Institute’s survey may not have been the most scientific, it does suggest one thing: technology may rule the world, but at least in Tokyo; it begins and ends with the taste buds(味蕾).
73.Instant noodles were considered the best invention of the 20th century in terms of .
A.practicality
B.acceptance
C.technology
D.trade
74.The underlined part“off-key howling”in Para. 3 probably refers to .

75.According to the survey, which was ranked the last on the list of the best inventions?
A. Cameras
B.CDs
C.Sushi
D.Automobile-related technology
76.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Noodles, the Best Invention
B.The Life-changing Technology
C.Japan, the Powerful Country

Sustainable(可持续的) management is seen as a practical and economical way of protecting species from extinction. Instead of depending on largely ineffective laws against poaching, it gives local people a good economic reason to conserve plants and animals. In Zimbabwe, for instance, there is a sustainable management project to protect elephants. Foreign tourists pay large sums of money to kill these animals for sports. This money is then given to the inhabitants of the area where the hunting takes place. In theory, locals will be encouraged to protect elephants, instead of poaching them because of the economic benefit involved.
This sounds like a sensible way, but it remains to be seen whether it will work. With corruption(贪污) in these developing countries, some observers are doubtful that the money will actually reach the people it is intended for. Others wonder how effective the locals will be at stopping poachers.
There are also questions about whether sustainable management is practical when it comes to protecting forests. In theory, the formula should be the same as with elephants—allow logging companies to cut down some number of trees, but not so many as to completely destroy the forest.
Sustainable management of forests requires controls on the number of
trees which are cut down, as well as investment (投资) in replacing them. Because almost all tropical forests are located in countries which very much need income from logging, there are few rules and motivation to do this.
One solution might be to certify(认证) wood which comes from sustainably managed forests. In theory, consumers would buy only this wood and so force logging companies to“go green” or go out of business. Unfortunately, unlimited logging is so much more profitable that wood prices from managed forests would cost up to five times more—an increase that consumers, no matter how“green”, are unlikely to pay.
77.The example of Zimbabwe is mentioned in the first paragraph is to .
A.prove that sustainable management is ineffective
B.explain what sustainable management is
C.show that tourism there is developing well
D.indicate that people there are good at making money with elephants
78.Which of the following statements is TRUE about “sustainable management”?
A.Sustainable management is usually used in commercial units.
B.Sustainable management is more powerful than laws.
C.We will probably meet many problems in the course of applying sustainable management.
D.It is likely that sustainable management will replace the laws in protecting living things.
79.The phrase“go green”( Para. 5) probably means .
A.a company begins to make money instead of being in red
B.making the forests always green in colour
C.operating in ways which do not damage the environment
D.starting from the very beginning
80.What is the passage mainly about?
A.What environmental protection mainly include.
B.Whether sustainable management in environmental protection is practical.
C.Different people’s attitudes towards sustainable management.
