An introduction to the course
• Our textbook is arranged in chronological order, but we deal with each period analytically with emphasis on theme.
Goals of The Course

1. What is Literature?
• Literature refers to the practice and profession of writing. It comes from human interest in telling a story, in arranging words in artistic forms, in describing in words some aspects of human experienHale Waihona Puke Baidues. • Literature shows us not only what a society is like in a certain age, but also what people feel about it, what they hope from it, and how they can change it or escape from it.

• 诗歌是抒情的,它述说的是人灵魂深处 的渴求和欲望,记载的是每一个时代无 以言说的时代精神,因此诗歌的表达方 式是超越理性和逻辑的。诗歌用充满意 象、隐喻、象征、节奏、韵律的诗行, 试图冲破有限的语言的牢笼,表达无限 的情感和想象的空间,因此诗的语言是 一种特殊的语言,是人类最为原初的语 言,也是永恒的语言。
