The number of school buses in Shanghai is falling while the number of private cars is rising, which creates traffic and safety problems around the city’s schools.

Political adviser Xu Jianmin urged(敦促)the government to increase the use of school buses. He said more buses would reduce traffic jams, improve safety and help reduce air pollution.

“There are about two million students in local kindergartens and schools, most of whom have to travel between homes and schools every day,”Xu said.“But in Yangpu District alone, the number of school buses was only40in2015,50percent fewer than that in2013.”

Xu said,“If every student goes to school in a private car,30students would need30cars, while actually they could all be carried in one school bus.Since one bus can get29cars off the road,I think it can reduce part of the traffic pressure in the city. The pollution caused by one school bus is much less than that caused by30cars.”It is also a matter of safety.According to a US study, buses are4.5times safer than cars.

Last year,an eight-year-old girl was killed on her way home from school when she fell off a moped(机动自行车)driven by her housekeeper and was hit by a bus.The housekeeper told the police she had to ride on the motorway because the bicycle lane was full of cars as parents were waiting to pick up their children from school.
